It was widely rumored that Apple would introduce the next-generation iMac at its special iPad Mini event
today, and sure enough the fruit company did just this. What was
unexpected however, was just how revolutionary the iMac update would be.
Although we expected Apple to bump the specs of the iMac, it was not
expected that we would see a serious update to the actual design
of the iMac. But this is exactly what Apple did… they took what some
people consider to be the flagship Mac product, and made it even more
extraordinary.

Just how did they do this?
Well, they started by putting the iMac on a serious diet. Apple’s new iMac
is just stunning 5mm thin (45% thinner than its predecessor) with
edge-to-edge glass. The display is laminated to the display, and every
display is individually calibrated using a spectral radiometer. It was
joked on stage by Phil Schiller, “there’s an entire computer in there.”
The new iMac
will come in two variants: the 27-inch version with a 2560 x 1440
resolution, and 21.5 inches with a 1920 x 1080 resolution. Despite how
thin the new iMac is, it has also had a bump in specs, but keep in mind there is no more optical drive. It will feature i5 or i7 Ivy Bridge processors, up to 3TB of storage and four USB 3.0 ports. Something notable it also includes is a brand new fusion drive that is essentially a cross between a solid state flash drive and a normal hard drive. It contains a 128GB flash drive with your choice of a 1 – 3 TB hard drive. The OS, frequently used applications and documents will be stored on the flash drive, while less used applications and documents will remain on the hard drive.
The new iMac lineup will start at $1,299 for the base version of 21.5-inch version with an i5 processor, 8GB of RAM and a 1TB hard drive. As for

the base model of the 27-inch version it will start at $1,799. You can learn more about the new iMac by visiting the official page on Apple’s website.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://itips101.blogspot.com/2012/10/new-imac.html' title='New iMac!! Something surprising that he brought up is that he thought Jailbreaking had an expiry date. What he meant by this is that as Apple is making Jailbreaking harder and hard in every iteration of iOS, eventually there would be no injection vector and Jailbreaking would cease to exist.

One could definitely argue against this, and point to the fact that as iOS was made by humans, there always has to be some sort of injection vector. The problem is however, Jailbreaking iOS has become one of the hardest platforms to exploit to date. Pod2G said himself, that he is only aware of a handful of people throughout the world who actually have the knowledge and expertise to exploit iOS. As such he said unless the Jailbreaking community sees some more developers, it is just going to become something that eventually fades away.

We can already see the effect of not having enough developers in the Jailbreaking community starting to take effect with the iOS 6 and iPhone 5 Untethered Jailbreak.

A reliable source of information in the Jailbreaking community, @Veeence took to Twitter recently to share some information on the current state of the Jailbreak. Essentially he shared information we already knew, but he did help clarify some details (read from the bottom up).

The iOS 6 and iPhone 5 Untethered Jailbreak will likely take the longest to see the light of day because Apple has increased security measures and there aren’t as many people working on Jailbreaks as there once was. Hopefully with events like JailbreakCon and Jailbreak devs presenting at conferences like HITB, it will help attract new figures to the Jailbreaking community. Otherwise Jailbreaking could cease to exist, or at the minimum take much longer than it has in the past to add support for new firmwares.
For those of you who are drawing a blank when <span $iceid="10" class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD8">hearing the term ‘Wiggle Mode’ it is when you re-arrange icons on your iOS device’s SpringBoard (homescreen) and the icons start to wiggle. As such, when we refer to ‘Wiggle Mode’ we mean the SpringBoard editor mode.
Anyways, back on track, this ‘Wiggle Mode’ for the Apple TV running iOS 6 beta 2 is enabled while holding down select <span $iceid="5" class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD3">button on your Apple TV remote control. Upon doing so the app you currently have selected will be automatically moved to a new position and the other <span $iceid="11" class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD9">applications will be rearranged automatically like on iOS. The only difference between ‘Wiggle Mode’ on the Apple TV versus say the <span $iceid="9" class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD7">iPhone is that only the selected app’s icon will start wiggling instead of all the applications starting to wiggle. Furthermore, there is no delete button on the icons (due to the fact that you cannot delete stock apps).
Check out a demo of ‘Wiggle Mode’ on the Apple TV running the iOS 6 beta 2 firmware below…

With ‘Wiggle Mode’ being featured in the Apple TV iOS 6 beta 2 firmware it could be a clear indication that 3rd <span $iceid="8" class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD6">party applications are coming to the Apple TV. In fact, this sort of functionality was introduced just before the iOS App <span $iceid="6" class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD4">Store was launched, giving this <span $iceid="14" class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD12">rumor even more credibility. I envision downloadable Apple TV applications to be similar to what Brightcove has been developing.

What better way to get around the Apple TV’s lack of an input device than use the iPhone, <span $iceid="3" class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD1">iPod Touch or <span $iceid="7" class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD5">iPad. In my opinion, most people who own an Apple TV most likely own an iOS device anyways, so relying on their iOS devices for an input device would be a smart idea.
when it is shipped to the public this Fall. In fact, we have given some
hands-on demos of some of the new iOS 6 functionality such as the redesigned Maps.app, new iPad clock.app and even some of Siri’s new features.
Right now the only way for you to experience these new iOS 6 features
is to be a registered Apple developer. If you do not want to spend the
$99 required to become a registered Apple developer then you will be
glad to know you have another option; as long as your iOS device is
Jailbroken that is.

You see, recently a Winterboard theme was released into Cydia called iOS 6 Theme.
Though this theme will not actually give you all of the functionality
of iOS 6, it will mimic most of, if not all, the UI (user interface)
changes in iOS 6 on your Retina iPhone or iPod Touch. The most notable examples being the redesigned iPhone dialler, new stock Music app skin and blue status bar.

Another nice element to iOS 6 Theme is that it will add a
non-functioning Passbook icon to your Springboard (homescreen) that
simply adds to the overall effect of the theme. You of course will also
find all of the new iOS 6 wallpapers available as well.
Obviously I understand these are all purely cosmetical changes, but
what do you expect, it is a theme. For those of you who would like to
add some of iOS 6′s functionality to your iPhone or iPod Touch you will be glad to know a few tweaks have been released to do just this.

iOS 6 Photos Menu: This Cydia tweak will bring the all new iOS 6 sharing menu to the stock Photos
app. With iOS 5, you could only tweet a picture from the Photos app,
but with iOS 6, you can post them on Facebook, Google+ etc.

iOS 6 Twitter Widget for Notification Center: The iOS 6 firmware features a tap to tweet bar
from the notification center that will allow you to quickly compose
your a tweet. With the iOS 6 Twitter Widget for Notification Center you
can replicate this same functionality.

FullScreen for Safari:
Although this tweak was not specifically designed to bring iOS 6
functionality to devices running iOS 5, this golden tweak will still
enable the full screen landscape browsing functionality that the iOS 6
version of Safari features (and some other cool features as well).

Hopefully these Cydia packages will get you by until the official release of the iOS 6 firmware this Fall. Let us know if you guys know of any other Cydia packages that replicate iOS 6 functionality in the comments section below…

A new unlock method has been discovered that works on every iPhone 4,
iPhone 4S, and iPhone 3GS running iOS 5, iOS 5.0.1, and even iOS 5.1,
the only requirement is the iPhone must be jailbroken already. If you’re
already jailbroke go ahead, otherwise here are guides to jailbreak iOS 5.1 and another guide for the iPhone 4S with iOS 5.0.1.

Assuming your iPhone is jailbroken and ready to go…

Open Cydia and add the repo “repo.bingner.com” and then search for “SAM” by sbingner and install it

Tap on the orange SAMPrefs icon that looks like a SIM card to launch the app

Tap “Utilities” and select “De-Activate iPhone”, tap “OK” when the deactivation notification pops up

Now tap “Method” and tap on “By Country and Carrier”

Tap “Country” and select the country the iPhone is locked to

Tap “Carrier” and choose the origin carrier the iPhone is locked to

Tap “More Information” and tap the IMSI number found under “SAM Details”

Tap on “Spoof Real SIM to SAM”

Tap back to the primary SAM setting screen, and paste the IMSI number into IMSI

Connect the iPhone to the computer and launch iTunes, letting iTunes reactive the iPhone

Disconnect the iPhone from the computer and quit iTunes, then tap on
“SAMPrefs” again and flip the “Enabled” switch so that SAM is disabled

Relaunch iTunes and connect the iPhone to the computer yet again,
ignore the “failed to activate” message and quit and relaunch iTunes
again

Wait a minute or two and the iPhone should get a signal from the new carrier, it’s now unlocked and activated

The downside to the SAM unlock method is that it requires a
jailbreak, that means if you lose your the jailbreak you lose the
unlock. If you don’t want to jailbreak or you can’t for some reason, you
can officially unlock an iPhone from AT&T by phone or through AT&T via web chat
instead. It can take several weeks for the unlock request to process
with AT&T and the iPhone must be out of contract, but it doesn’t
require any funky software mods and is much easier than the
aforementioned SAM method.
Great find by Singularity and @musclenerd.
It seems that Apple’s latest Address Space Layout Randomization scheme wasn’t as tough to break as anticipated. Pod2g announced on Twitter this morning that he was able to bypass ASLR. The next step of the project is to execute code on the unjailbroken devices using a ROP payload. The goal of which is to allow software to write to the phone’s kernel memory.

When Pod2g announced that he had found all the exploits required for a jailbreak on Wednesday, Grant Paul (@chpwn) cautioned his followers on Twitter that the exploits don’t mean a jailbreak exists, and that it could take months for anyone to have access to a fully working version of the jailbreak. While Pod2g’s latest breakthrough is encouraging news, keep in mind that Pod2g is working on this jailbreak in his own time for free and there’s no promised release date for any new jailbreak.
That said, for those of you stuck between iOS 5.1 and 4.3.3 there is a light at the end of the tunnel. How far away it is still remains to be seen.
Now, we’re not sure why we would need another tablet other than the iPad, but let’s look into it anyway.
When it’s not in use, do you shut down your Mac, put it to sleep, or just keep it turned on? Is one choice better than the others? Why and why not? These are great questions, so let us review the choices and why you may want to choose one over the other.

Sleeping a Mac
This is my preferred choice because it provides for the easiest and fastest way to resume work while still maintaining hardware. It’s practically instantaneous to sleep a Mac and when you wake it up all of your open apps, documents, window arrangements, and web pages, are exactly where you left off with practically no delay. For the average Mac user who wants to quickly get back to what they were doing, sleeping is perfect.

Pros: Quickly resume exactly where you left off; sleep and wake can be scheduled or even done remotely

Cons: Minor power consumption; system temp, swap, and cache files don’t get cleared out during reboot process; system updates requiring reboots don’t install automatically without a manual reboot; performance is best for Macs with 4GB RAM or more

If you use the Mac every day, simply putting it to sleep when it’s not in use or overnight is probably the best choice. Just be sure to remember to reboot every once in a while to allow system software updates to install as part of a general maintenance routine, though waiting for an OS X Update or Security Update is generally a sufficient time between reboots. You can also gather some gigantic uptimes with this approach which is pretty much a useless statistic other than the nerdy bragging rights, (I’m currently at 35 days, weeeee!) but hey it’s fun to check anyway.

Shutting the Mac Down
I basically never shut down a Mac unless it’s going into a longer term state of inactivity or storage. Shutting down a Mac is slower since all open applications and documents have to quit, and then when you turn the machine back on everything has to re-open again to get back to where you were prior to shutdown. OS X Lion made resuming past application states much simpler with the automatic window restore feature (which some dislike and choose to disable), but I still find it too slow to be usable for my instant-on demands.

Pros: Saves power, doesn’t strain hardware; system temp, memory, swap, and cache files get cleared out during boot; allows for major system updates to install

Cons: Takes a while to boot up and resume previous activity, no geeky uptime bragging rights

For the power conscious or for those trying to squeeze the absolute longest lifespan out of hardware and hard disks, shutting down when not in use is the best choice. This is also what you’ll want to do if you’re going to put a Mac in longterm storage, won’t be using it for a longer than a few days, or if you’re going to be traveling with a Mac that isn’t in use during the travel period.

Keeping a Mac Always Turned On
Leaving a Mac constantly turned on is another viable option, though I think it’s best reserved for Macs that function as servers. This approach also carries the most polar advantages and disadvantages. On the plus side, you don’t have to bother resuming anything since it’s already on, you can schedule all maintenance and backup tasks to occur in the wee hours of system inactivity, and it allows for something like a constantly available SSH server or media center to be running on the machine. The downsides are basically the constant power consumption and the constantly active hardware, which can limit overall lifespans of the computer components.

Pros: No waiting for use; instantly resume all apps and tasks exactly where you left off; allows for servers to run with constant accessibility; backup and system maintenance tasks can be scheduled for off hours

Cons: Constant power consumption; more wear and tear on hard drives, fans, and physical hardware due to possible heat

If you’re running a server or media center, leaving a Mac turned on constantly is a no brainer. For the casual Mac user, it’s probably best to put a Mac to sleep when it’s not in use though, it gives hard drives and fans a rest, and will generally lead to a longer lifespan of the computer.
Smaller iPad?

Tell me if you’ve heard this one before: an analyst who visited Apple’s suppliers predicts that Apple is going to introduce an iPhone with a bigger screen and an iPad with a smaller screen. I know I have. This time around the rumor comes from analyst Brain White with Topeka Capital Markets, by way of Apple Insider.
Brain White claims that the new iPhone will feature a 4-inch display (up from 3.5 inches), LTE network connectivity (as with the iPad 3), and a sleek new design built around a unibody aluminum case. Massive sales sparked by a significant redesign is the reason White cites for his prediction that Apple’s stock will reach $1001. As for the “iPad mini,” the smaller tablet is claimed to be somewhere in development and not for imminent release.

The reason I am skeptical about claims about tweaked iPhone form factors is because Apple has been very strict about maintaining the current screen dimensions of its iOS devices. The latest iPad’s screen resolution is 2048 by 1536. This number looks awkward on paper, but it perfectly doubles the 1024 by 768 panels of the previous models. This allows for older apps to easily run on the new screens without needing updates. Tweaked form factors would mean fragmentation; apps would have to be specificialy designed to support both the new and older phones, as well as the smaller tablet.

If the same screen resolution was maintained but spread across a larger area, that would also cause problems as Apple’s carefully designed interface is built around a 3.5 inch screen. It doesn’t seem likely that Apple will release iOS devices with different form factors, but would size be a selling point to you? The recent outbreak of the Flashback trojan has brought a lot of attention to potential viruses and trojans hitting the Mac platform. Most of what you’ll read is overblown fear mongering hype, and practically all Mac malware has come through third party utilities and applications. What that means for the average user is that it’s very easy to completely prevent infections and attacks from occurring in the first place, especially when combined with some general security tips. Without further ado, here are eight simple ways to secure a Mac to help prevent viruses, trojans, and malware from effecting you:

1) Disable Java
Flashback and other malware has installed through Java security breaches. Apple has already released several updates to patch the Java security holes that allowed Flashback to spread (you should install those), but you can also go a step further and completely disable Java on the Mac. Frankly, the average person doesn’t need Java installed on their Mac let alone active in their web browser, disable it and you don’t have to worry about security holes in older versions of the software impacting your Mac.
1a) Disable Java in Safari

Open Safari and pull down the Safari menu, selecting “Preferences”

Click on the “Security” tab and uncheck the box next to “Enable Java”

Disabling Java in the Safari browser is reasonably effective, but why not go a step further and disable it in Mac OS X completely? Chances are high that you won’t miss it, let alone notice it’s disabled.
1b) Disable Java System-Wide in Mac OS X

Open the Applications folder and then open the Utilities folder

Launch the “Java Preferences” application

Uncheck the box next to “Enable applet plug-in and Web Start applications”

Uncheck all the boxes next to “Java SE #” in the list below

2) Update Apps and OS X Software Regularly
Apple regularly issues Security Updates and many third party apps do as well, therefore regularly updating both your OS X System Software and OS X apps are one of the single best preventative measures you can take to keep a Mac secure. We’ve hammered home about this repeatedly as a general Mac OS X maintenance tip because it’s important and so easy to do:

Open Software Update from the  Apple menu and install updates when available

Open the App Store and download available updates

3) Disable or Remove Adobe Acrobat Reader
Adobe Acrobat Reader has had multiple security breaches recently, therefore you’ll be safer without it in your web browser. There’s little reason to have Reader installed on a Mac anyway, OS X includes Preview for viewing PDF’s. Uninstall Adobe Acrobat Reader by running the bundled uninstaller app, or locate the following file and remove it to uninstall the Acrobat browser plugin:

/Library/Internet Plug-ins/AdobePDFViewer.plugin

4) Install Anti-Virus Software for Mac OS X
Using anti-virus software on the Mac is likely overkill, but it’s worth mentioning again. We’ve talked about the free Sophos anti-virus here before, and though you probably won’t ever need it, it’s a free and effective way to fight viruses that may end up on the Mac. If you’re the cautious type and you’d rather be safe than sorry there isn’t much harm to using it as a preventative measure:

Download Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac

5) Disable Adobe Flash / Use a Flash Block Plugin
Flash has been used as an attack vector in the past, and Macs stopped shipping with Flash installed for a reason; basically it’s a crash-prone battery hog that has occasional security breaches. Many sites use Flash for video and games though, so instead of uninstalling Flash completely we’ll recommend using a Flash block plugin for your web browser. This causes all Flash to be disabled by default until you click to allow individual plugins and instances of the Flash plugin to run, preventing unauthorized Flash from running in a web browser completely. These plugins are free and available for every major browser:

ClickToFlash for Safari

FlashBlock for Chrome

FlashBlock for Firefox

6) Disable Automatic File Opening After Download
Safari defaults to automatically opening “safe” files after they’re downloaded. For added security, disable this feature and manage the opening of downloads yourself:

Open Safari preferences and click the General tab

Uncheck the box next to “Open ‘safe’ files after downloading”

7) Double-Check Anti-Malware Definitions are Enabled
OS X automatically downloads and maintains a malware definition list which is actively used to combat potential threats and attacks. This is enabled by default, but you can double-check to make sure you’re getting the updates as they arrive by insuring the feature is turned on:

Open System Preferences and click on “Security & Privacy”

Under the General tab look for “Automatically update safe downloads list” and make sure it is checked

You can also check the update list manually if you’re concerned the latest version hasn’t been installed, but as long as you have the feature enabled and have regular internet access, it probably is.

8 ) Don’t Install Random Software You Didn’t Ask For
If you see a random pop-up window asking you to install random software you didn’t request, don’t install it! This may sound like common sense, but it’s actually how some Mac malware propagated in the past. Apple patched the hole that allowed for that to happen a while ago, but the overall message is still relevant: if you didn’t download or request an app to be installed and you’re suddenly confronted with an installation dialog, don’t install it.
That about covers it, but if you have any additional security tips and anti-virus/malware/trojan tips, let us know in the comments.
While this could be the start of the June iPhone 5 production rumors or launch, I will say you should remain doubtful as this source may not be the most credible source of knowledge for Apple’s plans.
Well, if you would then you may want to check out the DoubleDock Cydia tweak that will allow you to place 5 additional applications in your dock. This means you can have a total of 10 applications in your dock on your iPhone or iPod Touch (no compatibility with the iPad at this time).
Unfortunately, in my opinion anyways, this looks not very pleasing to the eye. That is an unreal amount of pixels jam packed into such a small area, and as such games, pictures and just visual objects in general are going to look much sharper.
For some imaging the difference between the first and second generation iPad’s screen compared to the upcoming iPad 3 or iPad 2S’ may be a hard task. Luckily however, as pointed by TechCrunch, the developers of the game Food Run, Pixels On Toast have been busy preparing for the expected 2048×1536 resolution and as such have provided a nice comparison that you can look at below.
Additionally, the size of games would become larger as higher-resolution textures would be dominant. Meaning the the size limit for games is going to have to be raised to accommodate the higher-fidelity assets.

With the next generation iPad going to be unveiled March 7th, 2012 only time will tell whether we will actually see a Retina display as sorts or not. What do you think of this comparison? Reflection is a great new app for OS X that mirrors an iPhone or iPad display directly to a Mac by way of AirPlay.
Using the app is easy, launch Reflection on the Mac, then double-tap the Home button on the iOS device, swipe to the left, and tap the AirPlay logo to select the Mac. Within a moment or two the iOS devices screen will be mirrored on the desktop, you can then choose to display the output in an iPhone or iPad frame or none at all, and the output will respect the orientation of the device itself, rotating when appropriate.
That’s really all there is to it, it’s a simple app that has a lot of potential uses, ranging from demonstrations, to presentations, gaming, and even development. As long as you have a tolerable wi-fi connection there isn’t much lag, which broadens the potential uses considerably.
Reflection costs $15 for a single use license, but the developer provides a 10 minute free trial so you can confirm that everything works before paying for the full version.

Get Reflection app (free trial)

Device compatibility is the only drawback, as of now Reflection support for video and audio mirroring is limited to the newest iOS devices including Pad 2 and iPhone 4S running iOS 5 or later. Audio mirroring does work with iPhone 4, though that isn’t the intention of the app. The Mac will need to be running OS X 10.6 or later as well.

Check out two videos below from iDB and 9to5mac showing the app in action:
This app is getting a lot of well-deserved attention considering how useful it is, hopefully Apple will bundle such a feature into upcoming versions of OS X, but if that never happens, Reflection will do the job just fine.
The Verge has just reported that they have received their invite from Apple for an iPad 3 introduction to be held at the Yerba Buena Center for Arts in San Francisco at 10am PST, on Wednesday, March 7th.

Sticking with Apple’s style of invites, the invitation graphics show a close up of an iPad display with the tagline “We have something you really have to see. And touch.” The invite graphics would appear to confirm the rumor of the Retina display as one of the key selling points of this new device.
Unfortunately, as you can tell, this never happened and there are still a lot of people desperately awaiting the N64iPhone emulator so they can play classic games on their iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad running iOS 5 like Super Mario 64, Starcraft 64, Donkey Kong and many more!
Today we finally have received an update from ZodTTD in the form of a tweet explaining that he has actually gotten N64iPhone working on the iOS 5 firmware. The only problems he is facing is some frame limiting and backgrounding bugs. Once these issues have been fixed N64iPhone will actually be released and will be available through Cydia.
Now why do you care that Requiem was updated to version 3.3? Well, in this new version comes support for decrypting e-books purchased from the iBookstore. This is a significant new feature to the Requiem application that has already had a long history of being able to remove the DRM restrictions from music and videos purchased from the iTunes Store.
With Requiem being able to decrypt Apple’s own DRM protection, called FairPlay, on iBooks it means Apple’s e-books are no longer only restricted to being read on iOS devices. Due to this fact we are sure to see Apple release an update to their DRM protection method in the near future like they have in the past to counter Requiem’s decryption methods on songs/videos.

It will be interesting to see whether or not this will effect the sale of iBooks significantly or not in the near future. Unlike most updates for Seas0nPass that just bring on compatibility with new firmwares, Seas0nPass 0.8.2 comes with a new featured dubbed firmware stitching. What firmware stitching will allow you to do is downgrade your Apple TV to an earlier firmware version that Apple is no longer signing. You will of course have to have your signatures saved for a non-signed firmware however, in order to downgrade. This is similar to having to have saved SHSH blobs in order to downgrade your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad to an earlier firmware version.

Firmware signatures are required to install a particular firmware version onto iOS devices like the AppleTV. When installing the latest version, these signatures will be created in real-time during the iTunes restore process. However, from time to time some firmware versions will stop being ‘signed’ by Apple, which will prevent them from being installed. Backing up your firmware signatures allows you to retain the ability to install an older firmware version in the future, should the need ever arise.

In order to save your Apple TV firmware signatures you will need to use a tool like TinyUmbrella or you can even save them directly through aTV Flash (black).

We will have a how to guide available for saving your firmware signatures in the near future, but until that time you can download Seas0nPass 0.8.2 from the iJailbreak Downloads Section or from one of the download mirrors below.

Download Seas0nPass 0.8.2 (Windows)

For those of you who are not aware of what the WhiteD00r project is, basically it is an attempt to bring the features on the iOS 4 firmware to the iOS 3 firmware generation. Similarly, what the RedD00r project is, basically an attempt to bring the features of the iOS 5 firmware to the iOS 4 firmware generation.
The reason someone would want iOS 5 features while actually running the iOS 4 firmware, as explained in our last article, is if you have an older generation iPhone or iPod Touch; specifically if you have an iPhone 3G or iPod Touch 2G. You see, the iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G do not have native support for the iOS 5 firmware, meaning users with these two iDevices are not able to update to the official iOS 5 firmware. With the RedD00r custom firmware file, however you can take advantage of most, if not all, the features of the iOS 5 firmware while actually running the iOS 4 firmware on your iPhone 3G or iPod Touch 2G.
When we first told you about the RedD00r project there was no release date set in mind. It was simply an announcement by the WhiteD00r developers that it would be something they would work on. Thanks to information found on the WhiteD00r forums however, and from people who we have talked to, we have been informed that RedD00r is set for release some time at the end of February with support for the iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G (MB/MC). This is some exciting news for all of you who have been waiting to get your hands on the RedD00r custom firmware files!

OSX Mountain Lion? Awesome
Today Apple took the wraps off of OS X Mountain Lion (I know, we should have saw that one coming) and continuing with the movement started with its predecessor, OS X Lion, it continues to borrow heavily from iOS.

In fact, you could say that OS X Lion’s iOS implants were rather mild compared to what Mountain Lion plans to offer. Apple is obviously serious about completely combining the best elements of iOS directly into its desktop operating system, and no where is this more evident than with Mountain Lion.

Like times past, Apple has released a video teaser outlining various components of their upcoming OS X update. You’re already aware of one of them — iMessage — but what are the others?

iOS features in OS X Mountain Lion
iCloud
iMessage
Reminders
Notes
Notification Center
Twitter
Share Sheets
Game Center
AirPlay Mirroring
The common thread for all of these iOS features is iCloud. Apple will harness iCloud to seamlessly sync each of the aforementioned features together across iPads, iPhone, iPod touches, and now, Macs. Without iCloud, these would amount to nothing more than disjointed copies from iOS. Now there’s a real, and I hate to use the term, but there’s a real “synergy” here.

What do you think about Apple’s continuing initiative to integrate iOS into its desktop operating system? Do you think this is a good thing, or do you believe that the two should remain evidently separate?

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://itips101.blogspot.com/2012/02/osx-mountain-lion-awesome.html' title='OSX Mountain Lion? If so, you can do so now, as Apple has posted a public beta download for all to enjoy.

iMessage was one of the prominent features of iOS 5, and it allows users to chat across multiple devices using the same interface that’s used for SMS messages.

The beauty about iMessage is that it’s basically just an IM client, which means you incur no SMS fees. Now with this latest update, you can start and/or finish conversations on your desktop or laptop…

Head over to Apple’s iMessage beta download page, and score an OS X copy for yourself. Note: Be sure you’re running the latest version of OS X. We knew iMessage on the Mac was inevitable, but we’re ecstatic that it’s finally arrived. Be sure to let us know what you think about it.

If you want more coverage on iMessage, check out our extensive iMessage archive.

Also, we are aware that some users are receiving the following error when trying to download iMessage: “Our apologies but there was an unexpected error with the application. This problem has been noted, and an email has been sent to the administrators. Please check back in a few hours to try the download again.”

It looks like Apple’s servers may be maxed out, as clearing the cache, and trying another browser doesn’t seem to be working for people. Just be patient if you encounter this error, it should be up soon enough.
