Kaspersky Lab founder and CEO Eugene Kaspersky have some harsh words for Apple when it comes to security. At the Info Security 2012 conference, Kaspersky told CBR that Apple is ten years behind Microsoft in security.

As Apple systems become more popular with consumers and businesses alike, Apple will draw more attention from cyber-criminals, and the attacks will become more sophisticated, as was seen with Flashback, he said.

“I think they are 10 years behind Microsoft in terms of security,” Kaspersky told the publication. “For many years, I’ve been saying that from a security point of view, there is no big difference between Mac and Windows. It’s always been possible to develop Mac malware, but this one [Flashback] was a bit different. For example, it was asking questions about being installed on the system and, using vulnerabilities, it was able to get to the user mode without any alarms.”

If Apple is going to keep its users secure, Kaspersky says that they’ll have to adopt a new update cycle, which some have faulted for allowing Flashback to take off in the first place. They will understand very soon that they have the same problems Microsoft had ten or 12 years ago. They will have to make changes in terms of the cycle of updates and so on and will be forced to invest more into their security audits for the software,” he said.

Apple’s also announced Gatekeeper, a technology that will be built into the upcoming release of the OS X Mountain Lion, that gives users a way to install only software that’s been signed by registered developers.

Even with those things on tap, Kaspersky argues that Apple’s success will continue to make the Mac a bigger target.

“Cyber criminals have now recognized that Mac is an interesting area. Now we have more [malware], it’s not just Flashback or Flashfake,” Kaspersky told CBR. “Welcome to Microsoft’s world, Mac. It’s full of malware”
