If you are reading this it’s probably because you care about the show and are wondering about the gap between episodes. Well, knitting keeps having to take a back seat in my life to my job and other professsional development. Sadly, in the time since we recorded this so much has gone down in Boston, including Windsor button closing and Mind’s Eye going up for sale.
We will continue to record, probably monthly for a little bit, but we want to work this out and make a great show that we can be proud of. So please bear with us.

Also… I am working on so many projects I hope you can be patient with me as I work towards getting the show out and putting on some major events with my guild. If you are in Boston please come out and join the fun.</itunes:summary>

Jessica Burko (the force behind Boston Handmade) and some of the exhibitors at Boston Handmade Downtown (located here) sit down with me to talk about the holidays and fiber fun. Jen of Blue Alvarez, Lynn of Cozy Cottage Creations, and Sedruola of Sedruola’s Yarn Obsession all have some interesting insight on making stuff for people as gifts and getting through the holiday season.
Also… I have an update about my Knit One Save One (KOSO) project. Some stores I have contacted have offered to collect caps as well as hand out some donated materials for me. You can pick up two balls of yarn (courtesy of Kraemer Yarns) for making hats for KOSO while supplies last and drop off caps for KOSO until Sunday January 18th at the following locations:(in alphabetical order)
Mind’s Eye Yarns in Porter Square
Windsor Button in Downtown Crossing
Woolcott and Company in Harvard Square
While there is some confusion about deadlines and what is written on KOSO’s brochure, I assure you we have until the end of January to send in the caps.
I would like to thank all the people who are donating caps to KOSO and the following companies for donating yarn for my KOSO project:
Kraemer Yarns
Westminster Fibers
The Yarn and Fiber Company

The last couple of weeks have been a lot of fun and I have been knitting and crocheting up a storm. My brother got me started working on the Knit One Save one project and have had a lot of support from all the folks I run into. Perhaps I will put together an event for January for this project.
Music is by Chris Ayer “A Starfish In The Front Yard”
More links to come…
Added somewat LATER:
This show has a lot of discussion of my insane knitting life and the many things that are going on in Boston. I also talk a little bit about my friend Gary and his wife Lynn… I also talk about Prairie Home Companion and the song sailing around the room.

In my yarn-a-lot I talk about a hat I made for my friend gary of made of some Cascade 220 619 which I covet. I am also making a baby sweater out of some awesome organic cotton(it’s like terry cloth). I am making a couple of Olive You hats from Itty Bitty Hats.
Many thanks to Kraemer Yarns and Westminster Fiber for donating to my Knit One Save One Project.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>So… show notes will come up later.. but for the moment I am having technical difficulties and am going to spend my time trying to get the links working again so that this end up in the feed… so this post is going to be updated tonight with all sort of good stuff about the show including my two interviews and music and a little bit more about the passing of Lynn.
Added LATER.. much LATER:
On the show I interview Janice Kissinger, Director of Slater Mill in Rhode Island and Cindy, Owner of The Yarn and Fiber Company in NH. I would like to thank Jane from Porter Square Books for helping the guild (I messed up the website on the show)host The Yarn Harlot. I would also like to thank Franklin ans Stephanie for for speakinin Boston.
If you would like to learn more about my friend Lynn Votour and Gary Votour please visit her caring bridge site. Gary would appriciate any donations made in Lynn’s name to the Caring Bridge. The service they provide s crucial for the families of people in the hospital.
The music on the show comes from the Podshow Network and I played the Mega Bottle Ride by Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros on todays show. (this song really chokes me up and make me happy and sad at the same time… weird)
Finally… thank you all for your suggestions for working through my feelings about friends lost. Sorry the show notes took so long. (also, the title is a little nod toward the Seasonal Affective Disorder, because I get down in the fall..)</itunes:summary>

Today’s show is all about the Massachusetts Sheep and Woolcraft Show. My three Guest will be participating in the event which happens over memorial day weekend in Cummington, MA. It’s a great show and if you are in the new england or New York area it is a great way to spend the day. My punkin and I had such a great time last year that I offered to help promote the show this year. I am glad I did, it has made for a great chance to meet some new people and catch up with friends. I hope you enjoy the podcast and come out to Cummington to check out the sheep show.
In this episode I speak with Gale Zucker one of the authors of Shear Spirit. She has traveled to many farms and has brought back the stories and photos of people living their passions. She will be signing books on Sunday morning at the Botanical Shades booth.
My second guest, Andrea Colyer, is one of the owners of Greenwood Hill Farm. You may remember Andrea from episode 33. We catch up a little and talk about the MA Sheep show. I also gush about how much I love the Merino yarn that she makes on her farm.
My final guest, Louise Walsh, of Evergreen Farm shares her stories about being in the small and fuzzy business. She is a crafty and powerful force in the bunny business and has a lot to tell us about how wonderful the community at the MA sheep and wool is.
Thanks to all the vendors who were willing to be on the show. I hope that we get to visit in the future in person.</itunes:summary>

at the New Ag Hall in W. Tisbury
The event will run from 10:00 a.m. to 5 p.m.
If you are doing a day trip from Boston or other points in Massachusetts my friend Alanna is organizing a trip. There is also a weekend package if you are interested that can be found on the fiber festival website.
I am still collecting entries for the 50 episode drawing which will now include fun toys donated by my friend Hapto, some books, and some fiber…. To add yourself to the entries please comment on this episode letting me know when you have added a review to Google Maps for your LYS (I will believe you because fiber people are an honorable sort, right). If you would like to learn more about how to do the Google map edit thing please check out the Google Tutorial(it’s not as cool as my demo, but it will do).
Finally, if you would like to record an intro for my 50th episode, or record your version of the purl man song I would be happy to play it on the 50th episode. Please send it to me at podcast[at]itsapurlman[dot]com.

Alison is a pillar of knitting in the Boston area. She runs Circles, teaches knitting at her store and during the knit-outs, is a mother of a fantastic and funny little girl, and is always a welcome presence at any knitting circle. Her story echos the hopes and desires of many knitting folk. Basically, she wanted a place to knit with others without having to say a word… really what more do any of us want… (except then to blab on about everything…)</itunes:summary>

Hey all…
I have a new show… Alasdair joins me on the show to talk a little about Double Knitting and I flub my way through a wrap up of the last couple months.
MUSIC
End of the world is by The Crabs
Lost my way is by Matthew Ebel
UPDATED NOTES:
Alasdair is working on a Dragon Shawl which his girlfriend has dubbed Trogdor
Ewan (who I met at PodCampBoston2)recommends Hector & Russell for purchasing a Sporran.
Tom Bihn is the place to get the Swift knitting bag, the StuffIt: Yarn Stuff Sack, ClearlyOrganized: Clear Organizer Pouch (so much better than zip lock). I am running a drawing until Dec 7th for a StuffIt bag, post or send me your thoughts about lightness or heaviness of knitting and how that plays out in your life (listen to the show for more details).
Alasdair tells me a bit about Double knitting, his Ravelry DK group, suasage hats and more.
I forget the word trivet and my love for the Interweave Style Series.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Patience, by lovely friend who is on team chuppah… joins me in a little literary episode(live from her yarn den). We review Cast On, Bet’s Off and Casts Off by the Yarn Harlot. The rest of the show goes real political. We ponder what the election holds for us Knitters and what we, as knitters, should expect from our candidates (free the hemp and don’t let foreign yarns get too expensive). Check out this entry by the Subway Knitter also thinking about the upcoming election and the link to the Slate article. Let me know what you think about the upcoming knitting election.
Does anyone know if there is a knitting reflief group for Peru… How can I help?
This week’s drawing is about knitting literature. Please comment about how you think knitting could be incorporated into a book. Can it be a part of good literature, do you have a favorite?

I had some technical difficulties getting this up on the websiet on Sunday, so it took a whole day to get the mp3 out. The good news is that I am using a smaller file type to make it easier to download. Just thought you should know.

Apparently the new format does not work well with the player. So I will diabled it. Please download the show and listen to it on your computer.

Andrea & Tom of Greenwod Hill Farm
Today’s interview is with the nice folks at Greenwood Hill Farm in Hubbardston, MA. Andrea and Tom share some great insight into what farm life is like and what it means to be local. When I visited them to do the interview they were at the begining of the sheep birthing process. Now they are probably on the Sheep & Wool Circuit. If you rin into them, say hi… and if you end up touching their yarn you may have trouble putting it down (it’s so incredibly soft and excelent for dyeing)

<itunes:summary>Please help me in my plight to collect submissions for a 6 foot wide by 4 foot tall poster. It is going to be full color and laminated. Kimberly and I will be carrying it down to the today show to REPRESENT on the national morning news.
If you are so inclined here is what I am looking for in a poster/slogan:

A call to action for for all knitters
Knitting anthem
Something that is clean (both in language and in copyright)
General and inclusive of all knitters
To the point
Understandable to the muggles
Clean design so that we can see what the point is
Legible slogan text

Here are some ideas for slogan I have come across:

Those who can, knit
Don’t screw with the people of pointy sticks
Got Yarn
iKnit
I am a knitter
We knit

Please post questions to he comments…
The winning design will be brought to rockefeller center and I will try my damndest to get it seen.
Finally, please leave space at the bottom right for a WEBs logo, and please put your own credit at the bottom left.
If you have a submission please email it to me at 2skiens *at* itsapurlman *dot* com or put a link to it in the comments.
If you want to help, but don’t know how to design, please post slogans to the comments… This will help others as they look for a slogan for designing.
Break :)
Thanks again to everyone who submits to this and those who pass this message onto others.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>I am accompanied on this episode by the fantastic Stitchy McYarnPants. We take a trip in her Museum of Kitschy Stitches to find some of the origins of the male patterns. She has promised to add images of the exhibits on her site.
Some background, I have the following categories of male sweater patterns:
Mud Colors (most sweaters for guys are grey, black, navy, brown, or some combo of such)
Man Stripe (think abercrombie and finch)
The Cosby Sweater (nuff said)
Cable, rib, gansey (usually in a mud color)
NEW Lil Boy’s (upsized childrens sweater)
NEW Women’s Matchy (designed for her first and should have been left at that)
Please comment about this show, I am really interested in anything you have to say about the guy man issue.

Today’s song is Some Girls from Adam Brodsky’s second album, Folk Remedies.
I also play an interviews I had at Stitches East. The colorful and wonderful Brandon Mably gave me a moment of his time. He talks about his (then) current project, his studio, and how awesome it is to have yarn set to him. Michael Del Vecchio talks to us about his balls of yarn…uhm or his book about balls… uhm or about it is great to be ballsy about knitting… uhm… oh just check out his book Knitting With Balls: A Hands-On Guide to Knitting for the Modern Man
Finally I am trying to get a group together to go out and support Ivana Clobber and the Boston Massacre. Come on out to the roller derby on Feb 10th.</itunes:summary>

PURL-WISE PORTRAITS: KNITTERS THAT STAND OUT

NAME(AGE)
Jared (24)

OCCUPATION:
Artist in NYC and an admissions officer at a college

YEARS KNITTING:
Learned as a child from his mother. Got serious about it two years ago.

CLAIM TO FAME:
Brooklyn Tweed

FAVORITE LYS:
Online shops

CURENT UFO:
He has many projects on the needles but believes that he will complete a sweater from Denim People next.

FAVORITE DESIGNER:
Kim Hargreaves

POM-POM:
Yes to pom-poms. He feels pretty great about them.

KNIT IN PUBLIC:
Yes, on long bus rides, but not on the subway. Too much stress on the train.

GROUPIE OR LOANER:
Loaner, he enjoys the conversation, but it just doesn’t happen for him.

LAST YARN PURCHASE:
Bought a sweater’s worth of Jaeger Trinity from WEBS

LATEST BOOK:
Last ten books he bought were knitting books. He doesn’t know what the last one was though.

SHOW NOTES:
OK, so I am putting this out earlier than I thought because I wanted people to know about the events that are comming up. I know people need advance warning because I know people in Boston will want to go. Also… last minute additions Shannon Okey will be at Mind’s eye on Satyrday the 7th and Stitchy McYarnpants will be at the Porter Square Book Shop on Oct 13th. Who knew having a topical show would require so many announcments.
That being said, the interview I did with Jared has been one of the most wonderful things I have done so far. He is truely an interesting and thoughtful knitter and was very engaging. Not to mention how astonsihingly beautiful it was in the park that day.
Lot’s of good stuff to come in the near future, I have my review copy of Knitting with Balls and will bring it ot the KGB group tonight for a little discussion. I’ll let you guys know more next week.
MUSIC:
Made Me Cry by Boo Boo Davis
YARN-A-LOT:
Find our more about Lucy’s sock fest and sock club at Mind’s Eye Yarns
