Cider Days on Historic Walnut Street

Enjoy one of the area’s largest fall arts and crafts festivals! The 14^thAnnual Cider Days on Historic Walnut Street, presented by Great Southern, will be held on September 17 & 18 from 10am-5pm both days. This two-day fall festival will feature regional artists and crafters, three performance stages, a free children’s area with inflatables, and of course – real apple cider! Admission is $4 per person; children 10 and under are free.

Artists and crafters from across the region exhibit at Cider Days, selling a variety of handmade products, including jewelry, pottery, glass, wood-work, furniture and much more! In addition to great arts and crafts, Cider Days features fun and free hands-on activities, face painting and inflatables for children.

Cider Days also features three different performance stages each packed with varied performances from some of Springfield’s most lively and entertaining groups. You’ll be wowed with performances from the Springfield Little Theatre Youth Troupes, the Skinny Improv comedy troupe, and many more favorite local groups.

And, don’t forget to try some real apple cider while you’re there! The Coffee Ethic will be providing hot and cold varieties of fall’s favorite drink at the festival.

In this film, George Cochran and Harold Gridley (played by Crosby and Hope) flee Melbourne to escape their marriage proposals. They become divers and come across an island and meet the beautiful Princess Lala (played by Lamour). Come see their latest adventure in amazing Technicolor! Also included are the latest news and a color cartoon at no extra cost!

Hope Award Proclamation for Victory Trade School

Please join us on Monday, September 19, 2011 at 11:00 AM, Boonville & Commercial, the mayor will declare a proclamation of congratulations to Victory Trade School (VTS) as the Midwest Region ot the Hope & Effective Compassion Award winner by World Magazine. He will ask the citizens of Springfield to join him in voting for VTS to represent the award for the entire US.

The organization with the most online votes before September 30th wins Nationally. This would mean so much for Victory Trade School (VTS), besides being recognized nationally it also has a $25,000 prize. Here is the link to vote:

This performance is a part of the DON WESSEL EMERGING CONCERT ARTISTS series.

Mezzo-soprano Jennifer Johnson Cano hails from St. Louis, Missouri; she obtained her Bachelor's degree in Music from Webster University in St. Louis and her Master's degree from Rice University in Houston, Texas. She was a Gerdine Young Artist with the Opera Theatre of St. Louis, participated in the Ravinia Festival’s Steans Institute for Young Artists, and has spent two years in the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program at the Metropolitan Opera. As a first prize winner in the 2009 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, Mrs. Johnson Cano made her recital debuts in New York and at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. Equally at home in the worlds of opera, lieder and chamber music, she has participated in the Marlboro Chamber Music Festival and performed in Russia at the St. Petersburg Palaces Music Festival.

DCO's Annual Wine Walk

It works like this -- you pick up your wine glass (a Riedel glass that is yours to keep!) and start at a designated location (as indicated on your ticket) and proceed from there. At each location there will be great food from participating restaurants and great wines for tasting. Tickets are $35 and, as noted, include a Riedel wine glass that is yours to keep (a $22 value).

The 2011 Missouri Literary Festival: The Civil War will be held Sept. 23, 24 and 25, at The Creamery Arts Center, featuring New York Times Bestselling Author Jeff Shaara, author of “Gods and Generals” and “The Last Full Measure”; Pulitzer Prize-nominated historian William C. Davis; Novelist Janis Cooke Newman, author of “Mary: Mrs. A. Lincoln”; and more. Plus, come to the Big Tent to meet 24 invited regional authors and enjoy festival food and drink concessions.

Along with author readings and presentations, visitors will enjoy a Community Read of Springfield area Civil War diaries and letters; live interactive historical displays, art activities and music in Jordan Valley Park; a concert of Civil War Hymns by the Deliverance Temple Choir; and the Authors Gala, featuring music by Marideth Sisco and Blackberry Winter, as seen in the Academy Award-nominated movie “Winter’s Bone.” The festival also includes art and writing contests open to all Springfield 5^th grade and 8^th grade students.

PechaKucha Night Vol. 4, "There's No Place Like Home: Joplin Benefit" at RuBert Studio

AIA Springfield and PechaKucha Night Springfield have come together once again, this time to raise money for Joplin Relief. You are invited to present (and, of course, attend.) This is for everyone - students, emerging professionals, and seasoned presenters.

The theme for PechaKucha Night Vol. 4 will not necessarily reflect the presentations, it's simply advertising the evening as a fundraising event. Presenters have 20 slides and 20 seconds per slide to present their material. That makes for 6 minutes and 40 seconds of edifying entertainment. Despite the stuffy “presentation” moniker, PechaKucha’s atmosphere is casual and lax. The idea is to come away from the event with a greater perspective and richer ideas, but most importantly, to enjoy oneself in the process. Since Joplin, MO were affected by a devastating F-5 tornado, we are asking for a minimum $5 donation that will go to AIA Springfield. This event is entirely volunteer-based and sponsor funded.
