Discovery Center of Springfield offers Sizzling Summer Workshops for children age 4 through 8th grade. These workshops motivate children to learn, ask questions, and enrich their lives through hands-on activities. These classes run Tuesday-Thursday weekly sessions starting June 9 to August 6 (except July 4th week). Times are 8:30am-12:00 daily. Members are $40.00, non-members are $50.00 per week. The Science Cafe concept -- an informal discussion surrounding cutting edge science and research -- is coming to Springfield! In keeping with its mission to inspire lifelong learning, Discovery Center is excited to partner with the new Jordan Valley Innovation Center to host Springfield's first Science Café. Nanoscience is new area of exploration with tremendous potential. Nanoscience is becoming the new way science. Join U.S. Photonics to discuss their work with optics, lasers and nanotechnology. The July 9th Science Cafe features U.S. Photonics. U.S. Photonics incorporated in 2005, and their work with optics, lasers and nanotechnology is being noticed. Springfield Little Film Festival

In cooperation with the Springfield Little Theatreʼs historic Landerʼs Theatre and Moxie Cinema, Springfieldʼs premiere art-house movie theater, local filmmakers will have the opportunity to showcase their work and compete in the second annual Springfield Little Film Festival on July 9th and 10th, 2009. Tickets for the festival will be $7 per evening, and proceeds from the event will benefit the Missouri State University Digital Film Production Scholarship Fund. The festival features a two-night event showcasing the talent of local southwest Missouri filmmakers. Each night, following the screenings, filmmakers will be brought on stage to answer questions from the audience about their films. The festival will culminate with the exciting new silent film competition, which requires filmmakers to bring in local musicians to play live during their original silent film. The silent film competition, a tribute to the early days of cinema, is a great opportunity to exhibit the incredible talent in both film and music located in southwest Missouri. There are three categories in which filmmakers can compete: (1) Short-short film: no more than 10 minutes, (2) Short film: 10 minutes – 45 minutes, and (3) Silent short film: no more than 5 minutes with live music accompaniment. There is a $10 entrance fee for each category if submitted by early registration on June 15th; or a $15 entrance fee for each category if submitted by the deadline of June 30th. Filmmakers will be competing for prizes in each category. Outdoor Movies are a contemporary version of the drive-in theatre at a park on Springfield's founding site. Enjoy some of today's new release and pre-home release movies. ***The Hillbenders***
The HillBenders are a seasoned group of talented bluegrass musicians hailing from all over the country. With interests and influences as far-reaching as their hometowns, the sound they produce is unique and captivating. Drawn together by a mutual desire to write and perform original music, the HillBenders combine the traditions of bluegrass with a diversity of influences creating a sound unlike any you've heard before. Not only do all four members write and arrange their own music, they all sing incredibly well. Most songs boast 3 and or 4-part harmonies and the lead vocal role is shared among the group. Be prepared to be amazed by some of the best "unknown" voices in Bluegrass music today! The same can be said of the instrumental prowess of the band. Led by the formidable banjo playing of Mark Cassidy, the intricate instrumental parts in their music leave the crowd in awe. With tight arrangements and solo's as well as commanding vocals and harmonies there is little left to be desired after watching the HillBenders in concert. The HillBenders came together in late March '08 after the break-up of a former band (The Arkamo Rangers)left three of it's members (Mark Cassidy and Jim & Gary Rea) picking up the pieces and looking for a fresh start.
