According to a report from Pocket-lint, Facebook is interested in acquiring Opera Software, the company that developed the Opera web browser. As a result of the acquisition, Facebook would create its own web browser with heavy integration of the social network through plug-ins.

A Facebook browser that would allow you keep up to date with your social life from in-built plug-ins and features on the menu bar could be on the cards. Pocket-lint has heard from one of its trusted sources that the social networking giant is looking to buy Opera Software, the company behind the Opera web browser.

According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, investment bank Morgan Stanley tipped certain companies shortly prior to Facebook's initial public offering (IPO) that the company's value is lower than its starting stock price. The bank apparently received the information internally from a Facebook executive. Since the a majority of the public was not aware of this reappraisal, Facebook's stock did shortly rise to $40+ in the first hours on the NASDAQ, but has since declined significantly.

Facebook is currently being sued by shareholders that claim the company hid information from potential investors in the days leading up to its IPO. In addition, the company is currently under investigation by the SEC and FINRA.

According to several reports circulating the Web over the past few hours, Yahoo is set to launch its own web browser, dubbed "Axis," in the coming hours. Axis is designed to integrate web browsing on a computer, iPhone, and iPad. It works as a separate app on the iPhone and iPad, and as a plugin on desktop computers. The product has yet to be officially announced, but is already available for download here.

This doesn't seem to be stopping the team at Facebook headquarters, however. According to a report from TPM, the social network has already begun beta testing a new version of Timeline with some users. The slightly redesigned Timeline view focuses on compressing the header of the page by simplifying the tabs. In addition, the user’s name, home location, occupation, education, and other information has been moved on top of the "cover photo" on the page. Since the text is white, many are wondering how Timeline will handle lighter color cover photos.

It's unclear how far along Facebook is with testing the redesigned Timeline, and whether the design will ever see the light of day.

Hacker group Anonymous announced yesterday that it has released about 1.7 GB of information taken from the United States Bureau of Justice. Information stolen includes internal emails and database information, and the BJS took down their website to address the security issue.

Google will be celebrating the 78th birthday of Robert Moog tomorrow, May 23, 2012, with a (pretty amazing) interactive Doodle on its homepage. Moog, who is best known for inventing the Moog synthesizer, has been named the "pioneer of electronic music" with his invention.

To celebrate the occasion, Google has created an interactive Moog synthesizer on its homepage where users can turn switches on and off, play sounds, and record their creations. The Doodle is currently live on the Google Australia homepage, and will be launching in the U.S. tomorrow.

According to new data released by StatCounter this morning, Google Chrome has surpassed Internet Explorer as the world's most popular web browser (in terms of usage), a spot Microsoft's browser has held every week of the year since 1998. IE has been on a steady decline over the past several years, with web browsers such as Chrome and Firefox taking up market share left behind.

According to the data, Chrome now holds a 32.76% market share worldwide, while Internet Explorer controls 31.94%. In a distant third is Mozilla Firefox at 25.47%.

YouTube announced as part of a birthday blog post today that over 72 hours of video is collectively uploaded to the website every minute.

This past Friday, Facebook officially became a publicly traded company under the NASDAQ with the ticker "FB." The company managed to raise a $104 billion valuation and have an initial share price of $38. Facebook's first day on the stock market ended with the stock up $0.23 to $38.23 overall.

Today, the second day of trading for Facebook stock, didn't go as well for the world's largest social network. At the closing bell, Facebook's stock was down 10.99% or $4.20 for a final price of $33.90. At one point in the day, the share price was even lower, nearly dipping into the $32 range.

Yahoo today announced that it will be selling half of its stake in Chinese Internet company Alibaba back to the company. Representing about 20% of Alibaba's stock, Yahoo will receive $7.1 billion in total, with a minimum of $6.3 billion in the form of cash. In addition, the two companies have reached licensing agreements. Yahoo has agreed to let Alibaba run its Yahoo! China division for at least the next four years at a sum of $550 million.

First, at the time of an initial public offering (IPO) of Alibaba in the future, Alibaba will be required either to repurchase one-quarter of Yahoo!'s current stake at the IPO price or allow Yahoo! to sell those shares in the IPO. Second, following such an IPO, Yahoo! has registration rights and rights to marketing support from Alibaba to enable Yahoo! to dispose of its remaining shares, at times of Yahoo!'s choosing following a customary lock-up period.

Earlier this evening, Microsoft publicly launched its "research" social network dubbed "So.cl." Interested users are able to sign up using a Windows Live ID or a Facebook account. Microsoft launched So.cl as an experimental social network with students at the University of Washington, Syracuse University, and New York University. It is geared towards students and allows users to follow people, subscribe to groups, watch videos, and post messages.

Today, Google unveiled further integration of Google+ into its email service Gmail. The first improvement coming deals with search in Gmail: searching for a person's name will now display any emails you've sent to them, their profile pictures, and the ability to start a conversation with them. In addition, Google is rolling out improved Circles integration, allowing users to see profile pictures and detailed search information when clicking on the pictures of their Google+ friends.

Circles are also now supported in search and filters. Find messages from a specific circle by typing circle:[circle name] in the search box. You can also find mail from any of your circled contacts by searching with has:circle. You can refine your search even further with other criteria and create filters based on circles. This means you can now view all the unread emails from your ‘Friends’ circle or automatically star every message that comes from your ‘VIP’ circle.

Today, Facebook officially became a publicly traded company when it launched under the ticker "FB" on the NASDAQ. Also today, Facebook was hit with a class action lawsuit that claims it continues to track users' web browsing activity even after they logout of the social network. The lawsuit, which was filed in San Jose, California, is seeking nearly $15 billion in damages from Facebook.

Facebook users today filed an amended consolidated class action complaint in federal court in San Jose, California in the case In re: Facebook Internet Tracking Litigation, No. 5:12-md-02314-EJD. The class action asserts federal statutory and California State causes of action related to the revelation in September 2011 that Facebook was improperly tracking the internet use of its members even after they logged out of their accounts. The action consolidates 21 related cases filed in more than a dozen states in 2011 and early 2012.

The plaintiffs assert claims under the federal Wiretap Act, which provides statutory damages per user of US$100 per day per violation, up to a maximum per user of US$10,000. Even if Facebook’s alleged actions constitute a single violation of the Wiretap Act per class member, that implies more than US$15 billion in damages across the class. The complaint also asserts claims under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, the Stored Communications Act, various California Statutes and California common law.

The class action is being led by court-appointed co-lead counsel Stewarts Law US LLP and Bartimus, Frickleton, Robertson & Gorny, P.C. Today, Facebook officially launched its initial public offering (IPO) on the NASDAQ under the ticker "FB." The company's stock began trading at $38 after a nearly 30 minute delay from when it was initially scheduled to begin trading. The delay was reportedly due to heavy load on NASDAQ's network in preparation for the launch.

After its first day of trading, Facebook's stock ended the day at $38.23, up $0.23 from the original stock price. The number is down from the high for the day, which was about $42. While the end result wasn't as high as most investors and analysts believed it would be, the IPO still put Facebook at a $104 billion valuation.

According to a report from The Associated Press, Facebook has announced yet another update to its initial public offering that is expected to be launched this Friday, May 18. This time, Facebook revealed that it has added an extra 84 million shares into its stock pool, all of which will be coming from early investors and internal people from the company.

Facebook plans to offer each share at somewhere between $34-$38, possibly raising a much-higher-than-expected $16 billion.

Today, Google introduced a new feature to its search engine that is dubbed "Knowledge Graph." The technology takes user input as a whole, rather than separate words and strings like it has been in the past. Knowledge Graph will allow users to narrow their search results down to exactly what they're looking for, get a summary of information on the right-hand side of the page, and pick out small details related to search queries.

The Knowledge Graph enables you to search for things, people or places that Google knows about—landmarks, celebrities, cities, sports teams, buildings, geographical features, movies, celestial objects, works of art and more—and instantly get information that’s relevant to your query. This is a critical first step towards building the next generation of search, which taps into the collective intelligence of the web and understands the world a bit more like people do.

Google has already begun rolling out Knowledge Graph to users, and it will soon be available on mobile devices as well.

Today, Google released the first Stable version of Chrome 19 to the public, adding tab syncing across multiple devices when users are signed into Chrome with a Gmail account. When a user is signed in, all their open tabs appear under a new menu on the "New Tab" page in Chrome called "Other Devices."

The Stable version update will be rolled out to existing Chrome users over the coming days.

Popular Android photo sharing service Lightbox announced today that it has been acquired by Facebook. The company's team of seven (7) will be joining Facebook, while the service itself will be functioning until June 15. Users have until that date to download their photos from Lightbox. The Android app has already been removed from Google Play, and new user sign ups aren't being accepted at this point.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed to the public.

Facebook announced today that it has begun rolling out an update to its mobile interface on iOS, Android, and m.facebook.com that increases the size of pictures by three times (3x).

Starting today, we’re rolling out an improved design for posts in news feed on your mobile phone. Now photos are up to 3x larger, and all posts will fill your mobile screen from edge to edge. The new design will be available on iOS, Android and m.facebook.com. Check out some before/after screenshots below.

According to a report from Business Insider (based on a research note from Macquarie analyst Ben Schacter), Google is currently developing a Chrome Web Browser app for use on iOS devices. In fact, the app may already be submitted to Apple for review and could debut in the App Store as soon as the end of this quarter. No specific details about the app were given, however.

While third-party web browsers already exist on the App Store (an example include Opera), a majority of iOS users still use Safari because of the amount of system-level integration the app brings.

Earlier today, the SEC released Facebook's seventh (7) amendment to its initial public offering filing. In the new filing, Facebook readjusted the projected share price from the previous $28-$35 to $34-$38, bringing the company's valuation well above the prior projected value of $100 billion. In addition, Facebook has upped the amount of shares it will be trading to 337 million.

In addition, Facebook has confirmed previous rumors that its $1 billion acquisition of Instagram has been delayed. The social network was planning to complete the deal sometime in the second quarter of this year, but the new documents point to the deal closing sometime in 2012.

Facebook's stock will appear on the NASDAQ under the ticker "FB." The company's IPO is expected to launch this Friday, May 18, 2012.

Yahoo has just announced that it will be naming Ross Levinsohn as interim Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the company following word earlier this morning that Scott Thompson had stepped down from the position. Thompson was accused earlier this month of lying on his resume when he was hired as Yahoo CEO in January of this year. In addition, Yahoo has named Fred Amoroso as Chairman of the Board of Directors, replacing Roy Bostock.

As a part of the settlement agreement, Third Point, which owns an aggregate of 70,545,400 shares, or 5.8% of Yahoo! common stock, has agreed to withdraw its previous Board nominations for consideration at the annual meeting and vote its shares in support of Yahoo!'s nominees. Yahoo!'s slate of director nominees for election or re-election at the 2012 annual meeting of stockholders will now include Fred Amoroso, John Hayes, Peter Liguori, Thomas McInerney, Maynard Webb, Sue James, David Kenny, Brad Smith, Daniel S. Loeb, Harry J. Wilson and Michael J. Wolf.

As interim CEO, Mr. Levinsohn will manage the Company's day-to-day operations with assistance from Yahoo!'s existing senior leadership team.

To celebrate Mother's Day, Google has placed a heart-warming animated Doodle on its homepage. The Doodle portrays the mom character as a "g" and her two children as two "o's" as a spin-off of the regular Google logo. The "o's" are animated and walk over to hug the "g" and the rest of the Google logo fades in.

According to Mashable, Facebook has begun rolling out the ability to upload files in Groups. The feature, which is somewhat a competitor to Dropbox, allows users to upload files smaller than 25 MB, but no music files or executable (.exe) files are allowed. Most other files types will be allowed, however.

To prevent the spread of malicious, inappropriate or copyrighted files, “users can report files the same way they can with other content across the site,” a Facebook spokesperson said. Whether a group that wants to share such things will willingly turn itself in remains to be seen.

It's unclear when all Facebook Groups will receive this feature, but the social network says that it should be "soon."

iOS hacker Steve Stroughton-Smith posted a picture to his Twitter account earlier this afternoon that gives evidence Apple is testing both the Notes and Reminders app for iCloud.com. The current iCloud.com includes email, calendar, contacts, Find My iPhone, and iWork integration (and icons for each service). This screenshot, however, adds in two new icons: Notes and Reminders, both of which are currently available on iOS devices and will be coming to Macs this summer with OS X Mountain Lion.

The leak comes via http://beta.icloud.com, which Apple appears to be using for the test. The link doesn't always work, and will sometimes redirect to Apple's iCloud information page.

It's possible that these announcements will be coming at next month's Worldwide Developers Conference.

The new Bing should be rolling out the world sometime in the coming weeks.

Earlier this week, Pandora announced via its Facebook Page that it has surpassed 150 million registered users. The service, which was founded back in 2000, is designed for music discovery. It allows users to type in the name of a song or artist, find similar tracks, and then listen to those similar tracks.

Pandora's largest competitor at this time is likely Spotify, which recently introduced its own service similar to Pandora, dubbed "Spotify Radio." Spotify launched in the United States last summer, and allows users to stream music for free.

Today, Facebook announced to developers that it will be launching its own "App Center" over the coming weeks that will act as a centralized place to discover new apps. The app center, which is designed to compete with Apple's App Store and Google Play, includes ratings and details for each app. Developers will also be able to charge for apps for the first time on the social network. The app center will work on Facebook.com, and the iOS and Android versions of the mobile app. Developers will be required to use Facebook's login system if needed.

There isn't any word on when the service will be launching to the public.

Yahoo announced yesterday that it will be forming a committee that will investigate the academic credentials and background of CEO Scott Thompson. The committee will also look into the process of how Thompson was hired at Yahoo just five months ago. This news comes just days after Yahoo shareholders unveiled evidence that Yahoo's recently hired CEO lied on his resume, claiming that he received a computer science degree from Stonehill College that he never actually obtained.

The Board of Directors of Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ:YHOO) today announced that it has formed a special committee to conduct a thorough review of CEO Scott Thompson's academic credentials, as well as the facts and circumstances related to the review and disclosure of those credentials in connection with Thompson's appointment as CEO.

The special committee is chaired by Alfred Amoroso, an independent director who joined the Board in February of this year. The other members of the special committee are John Hayes and Thomas McInerney, independent directors who joined the Board in April of this year.

Yesterday, popular third party Twitter photo upload service Twitpic announced the release of its official iOS app for the iPhone (App Store link). The app allows users to take photos, edit them, upload them to Twitter, and see photos taken by other users of the app.

According to a report from AppleInsider, some users who logged into iCloud.com this afternoon found that Apple has begun testing a notification system for its cloud service that launched late last year. At the top of the screen, users saw a message with the title "Default Title for English" and a description of "English - this is a test message description." The notification has a very similar design to the notifications found in iOS 5.

It's not clear how Apple is planning to use notifications on iCloud.com, but it's possible we may see some sort of syncing of notifications across all devices through iCloud.

According to a report from All Things D, Yahoo director Patti Hart will not "stand for reelection" at the company's next annual meeting that will take place in June. Hart was most recently in charge of hiring Yahoo CEO Scott Thompson, who reportedly lied on his resume by claiming to receive a computer science degree from Stonehill College. Hart was in charge of running background checks on potential candidates for the position. Hart's own academic background has also since been brought into question by Yahoo shareholders.

Hart is the CEO of International Game Technology, whose board is asking her to step down from her position at Yahoo as well.

Investment firm Third Point just yesterday demanded that Yahoo release information into how it hired CEO Scott Thompson, who has been on the job for a mere five months.

Last week, news broke that recently hired Yahoo CEO Scott Thompson lied on his resume, stating that he obtained a computer science degree from Stonehill College. Thompson, however, never received the degree and as a result, activist shareholder Dan Loeb and his firm Third Point demanded that Yahoo fire its CEO by this afternoon. As of today, however, Thompson is still in charge at Yahoo.

Now, Third Point announced today that it has sent Yahoo a letter demanding that under "Section 220(b) of the Delaware General Corporation Law to inspect books and records relating to the hiring of CEO Scott Thompson..." The letter also requests an investigation into the appointing of other Yahoo board members.

Third Point believes that Yahoo! shareholders and employees will be best served if the Board accepts responsibility quickly for this latest debacle.  If the Directors are truly interested in "working in a constructive manner with Third Point", they should provide answers promptly.  We believe that this internal investigation by this Board must not be conducted behind a veil of secrecy and shareholders deserve total transparency.

Yesterday, Adobe announced the release of the third beta version of the upcoming Flash Player 11.3 release. The newest version of the company's Web browser plugin brings low latency audio support for streaming audio through NetStream, full screen keyboard input, background updating on Mac OS X, and a "Protected Mode" for Firefox users.

At this time, it's unclear when Adobe will be releasing the final version of Flash Player 11.3 to the public.

According to a report from Bloomberg, the United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is preparing to slap Google with a fine totaling more than $10 million as a result of the Web giant's recent breaching of Apple Safari's cookie system. Google was caught inserting certain cookies into Safari on iOS devices that circumvented privacy restrictions and tracked users' activity on the Internet.

At this time, no official fine has been given.

Earlier this week, it was revealed that recently hired Yahoo CEO Scott Thompson included fake information on his resume that ended up getting him hired at the struggling Internet company. Thompson reportedly included that he received a computer science degree from Stonehill College, but there is no evidence of him actually receiving that degree.

Now, according to AllThingsD, activist shareholder Dan Loeb and his firm Third Point are demanding that Yahoo fire CEO Scott Thompson by Monday afternoon. In addition, Loeb is asking Yahoo to conduct a full investigation into whether its board of directors knew about Thompson's fake resume information, and how the hiring process took place. Third Point is also requesting Yahoo to fire director Patti Hart because questions into her academic background have also been raised now.

Third Point will consider it grounds for further action if the Board does not take the following steps by Noon EDT on Monday, May 7th:
1) Publicly reveal the process by which it vetted Mr. Thompson as a potential CEO candidate. This disclosure should include the release of all minutes of any meeting at which Mr. Thompson’s candidacy was discussed and any reports or other materials upon which directors relied to evaluate Mr. Thompson’s candidacy.
2) Disclose whether any Board member, including Maynard Webb, who has long-standing ties to Mr. Thompson, and Ms. Hart, who headed the Search Committee, was aware of Mr. Thompson’s deception prior to receipt of Third Point’s letter yesterday.
3) Provide shareholders with all information regarding the director nomination process, including the so-called “skills matrix” referred to in the Company’s preliminary proxy statement, which the Board purportedly used to determine the qualifications of various candidates, including Third Point’s nominees.

Professional social network LinkedIn announced today that it plans to acquire community content sharing website SlideShare for about $118.75 million. Expected to close sometime in the second quarter of this year, the deal would bring SlideShare under LinkedIn control. SlideShare was founded in October of 2006 and recently surpassed over 29 million unique visitors. The website allows presentations and other content to be uploaded and shared with others on the Internet.

In its fifth amendment filing with the SEC, Facebook today announced the price of its upcoming initial public offering (IPO) at $28 to $35 per share. At that price range, Facebook should have a valuation between $85 billion and $95 billion, beating the previous technology record currently held by Google at $23 billion. The world's largest social network plans to offer 157,415,352 shares of Class A common stock at a later date.

Today, Microsoft announced that it has rolled out a new look for its search engine Bing. The company has simplified search results pages on the search engine that sports smaller navigation links and a simple, white background color.

In addition, Microsoft has begun testing a design tweak on Bing's homepage: a larger version of the daily image. While not available to everyone just yet, Microsoft is asking users who come across the change to give their feedback.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Facebook will be launching its initial public offering on May 18, 2012, just about three (3) months after the world's largest social network filed for the IPO. If rumors over the past few months prove to be true, Facebook's IPO will be the largest in technology history, raising $10 billion with a $100 billion valuation.

Late last month, a report came out that claimed the company's IPO would be delayed until June because CEO Mark Zuckerberg was focusing his efforts on acquisitions of other companies (most notably Instagram for $1 billion).

Following a tease yesterday, Facebook announced today that it will begin allowing users to add to their Timelines that they are organ donors. The feature is designed to make organ donations more social, and easier to find for the millions that need them.

Starting today, you can add that you’re an organ donor to your timeline, and share your story about when, where or why you decided to become a donor. If you’re not already registered with your state or national registry and want to be, you’ll find a link to the official donor registry there as well.

Today, LG took the wraps off of its own content streaming cloud service that will allow users to play media content on computers, smart TVs, and smartphones. The beta version of the service is launching tomorrow, May 1, in the United States and an official release of LG Cloud is expected sometime next year.

To use the service, users need to download the LG Cloud app from Google Play or LG SmartWorld app store from their Android smartphones, LG SmartWorld store from their LG Smart TVs or the LG Cloud website (www.lgecloud.com) from their PCs or laptops. LG’s Cloud service automatically synchronizes smartphone content with the cloud server and the user’s PC and TV. Photos and videos taken with the smartphone can be viewed and streamed to the PC or TV almost instantaneously. Videos edited on a PC can be uploaded to LG Cloud for viewing seconds later on a smartphone. Unlike other cloud services, there’s very little waiting or lag time since the content is streamed to the TV, PC or smartphone, not downloaded first.

There will be a free plan for users, but also a paid option presumably with more storage capacity.

In a press release, ABC announced that Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg and COO Sheryl Sandberg will be unveiling a new tool for the world's most popular social network tomorrow morning on Good Morning America.

First on “Good Morning America” Tuesday, Zuckerberg gives Robin Roberts the first look at a new Facebook tool which has the power to save lives from their new Menlo Park, CA  headquarters. Then on “World News with Diane Sawyer,” one of America’s most powerful businesswomen Sheryl Sandberg will sit down for an exclusive interview with Diane Sawyer and discuss the personal stories that led to this new initiative and its goals.

Back in late February, reports surfaced that Apple acquired app discovery and search service Chomp. Immediately after the news, many wondered what would happen to Chomp's Android OS functionalities, which includes integration with Google Play. According to GigaOM, Chomp yesterday removed all Android app search features from its website and services, and deactivated its Android app as well.

It's likely that this move is one of the final as Chomp integrates itself into Apple's corporate structure, and begins work on only iOS-related functionalities.

Earlier today, a new easter egg was discovered on Google search results, one that deals with Blizzard's Starcraft video game series. To begin the easter egg, you type in "zerg rush" (without the quotes) into Google, and watch the show as red and yellow circles begin to drop from the top of the screen and literally "destroy" search results on the page. Clicking on one of the circles will destroy them immediately as well.

The United States House of Representatives announced this evening that it has voted to pass the highly controversial Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA). 248 members of the House voted for the bill's passing, while 168 voted against it. The act now moves to the Senate, where it will likely receive a major re-write because in its current state, President Barack Obama has already stated that he will veto the bill if it makes it to his desk.

The President stated that the bill would allow "broad sharing of information with governmental entities without establishing requirements for both industry and the government to minimize and protect personally identifiable information."

Today, Amazon reported its financial results for the first quarter of 2012, announcing a revenue of $13.18 billion, which beats analyst expectations by about $0.32 billion.

Operating cash flow increased 1% to $3.05 billion for the trailing twelve months, compared with $3.03 billion for the trailing twelve months ended March 31, 2011. Free cash flow decreased 39% to $1.15 billion for the trailing twelve months, compared with $1.90 billion for the trailing twelve months ended March 31, 2011.

According to a blog post, Google Translate, the service that allows people to simply type in text and translate it into a wide variety of different languages, is used by 200 million users every month. Translate will soon be celebrating its sixth (6) birthday and has been rolling out languages available for translating for several years now. In addition, Google revealed that 92% of the traffic coming to Translate is outside of the United States.

Today we have more than 200 million monthly active users on translate.google.com (and even more in other places where you can use Translate, such as Chrome, mobile apps, YouTube, etc.). People also seem eager to access Google Translate on the go (the language barrier is never more acute than when you’re traveling)—we’ve seen our mobile traffic more than quadruple year over year. And our users are truly global: more than 92 percent of our traffic comes from outside the United States.
