I used to have HTC smartphone; I cracked the screen 3 times, even when it was inside a cover! Very sad! I damaged something while trying to change the screen the third time.

It was past 3 pm.
She was in the room putting my daughter to sleep. My son was hungry, and so was I. I hadn't eaten anything since yesterday night.

I decided to cook for me Batchelor's Cheese Leek and Ham Pasta. When she smelled it, she went for a toss - shouting, cursing, crying. Of course, nothing in the ingredients mentions ham, or for that matter, anything meat; not even chicken!

But she refused to accept this, and went into a frenzied cleaning spree. She cleaned everything in the kitchen, and furiously refused all attempts at sensible things. She believes the packet does not mention, but it does contain ham! (conspiracy). And I am part of the conspiracy to undermine her religion (whatever that is, since she rarely says here prayers). Please note that she prays about 3-4 times every year!!!

I know this is a mental health issue, but how do I get her to the doctor?

Horrors of the London Underground on Halloween

I felt scared today. It appeared like a normal boring day today, as I cycled to the Wolverton station this morning.

I regularly board the 7:12 am London Midwestern Railway train from Wolverton, Milton Keynes to London Euston. After a few horrible journeys on the Northern Line to Moorgate, I started walking to Euston Square station. The trains there are more spacious, have more headroom, are much less crowded. However, today was going to be a different experience. In hindsight, I should have taken the Northern Line today.

As I reached the Euston Square station this morning, I saw that it was closed due to a signal failure at Kings Cross St Pancras (weird name!), so I decided to take the next best option; walk to Warren Street station and take another train. Now, I had two options - take the Northern line again, or take the Victoria line to Oxford Circus and then the Central Line to Bank!

I took the 2nd option!!!!!!!!! And ended up reaching Work 45 minutes later.

At the Oxford circus station, walking through the cramped overcrowded tunnels of the Central line, I looked around at the people trickling along, and I feared for my life. I do trust London, and I am sure nothing untoward would happen. People were still chatting and laughing along the way. If this was a third world country, like India, we would all have died in the tunnels.

No! I wasn't scared of dying. I was scared of the kind of life I would have if I stayed here. I once again regretted leaving Scotland behind me, and resolved to do all I can to get away from the horrorific tunnels of the London Underground.

To make the day more adventurous, Bank station was closed due to overcrowding, so I had to get off at Liverpool station instead.

Only in London would you see so many well-dressed rats in the Rat Race, I am embarrasses to admit, I am becoming one of them!!!!!!!!!!

Someone help me please. I want to Live!

What my Son Teaches me!

2014-06-13: At 3 yrs 11 months, my son "ventured" out alone today for the first time! He went on a school trip to the beach. While he has been excited for the last 10 days (he woke up early today!), we have been very scared, so much so that his mother decided to secretly tag along and spy on him, just to be sure he is safe!

I know, I know; a few years later, we will be embarrasses and may even laugh at it, but this what being a parent means. I still remember his first day in school! I had planned to stay the full 2.5 hrs, just so he doesn't feel lonely, but it just turned to be quite disappointing! He actually waved me good-bye and asked me to leave! Here we were, expecting our child to break into tears :(

I am sure every parent goes through this heart breaking moment when their child ventures out in the big bad world, all alone; but I am happy we had the courage to let go (almost), and let him learn his ways through this "big, bad world".

I am already PROUD of YOU, my SON!

2012-08-02: How time flies! He is two years old now. We celebrated his birthday at Pizza Hut in Cardiff; it was fun, and luckily, a bright sunny day! He is turning into quite an explorer; he kept running into the Pizza Hut's kitchen. And we had a tough job trying to bring him back into the party area. Lovely day, it was! In the end we were left with lots of Pizzas and cakes, which had to be distributed among those who were interested.

2011-06-07: Practice makes a man perfect! How many times have we heard this?

I have seen it in action; my son practices everything he sees us do, until he has learned it. The latest in learning to wave his hand when we say bye-bye. I often see him busy with himself, practicing his moves - twisting his wrist, and twiddling his fingers (atleast trying to).

Daksh is also learning new words, though its difficult to understand which language is it. He had been utterring "da-da" for the last few days, until we heard "Daksh" and "di-di" from his mouth.

It feels so good! I doubt I would be happier if he joins Harvard business school a few years from now.

2011-05-07: Its wonderful to see a child obsessed with an idea. Its similar to the obsession that makes great sportsmen, businessmen, artists, leaders - single minded devotion to learning a skill. e.g. Daksh is now learning to spin a top, with almost anything that he can, correction, he is allowed to lay his hands on. It started with the maid spinning her bangles; this caught his fancy so much that he has started spinning almost anything he can lay his hands on - pen, pieces of toys, bottle caps, steel tumblers, bowls, mobile, even pieces of paper!

Its Fun, watching a child grow up, filled with wonder about everything around him, getting excited about a tiny thread he finds.

2011-05-02: It feels great, Really Great, to see him light up his face when he sees me. To see him leave his mom, and granny, and whatever he was doing, to rush up to me; to jump into my arms with a broad smile on his face.

I don't know what he sees in me, but I feel proud.

Maybe these are the perks of being a father.

Maybe its natures way to develop the bond between a father and a son... My son!

By the way, did I tell you that he uttered "pa pa" before "ma ma"; thats another feather in my cap!

Amazon faced further headaches today after it emerged a crash that caused thousands of websites to shut down also resulted in the loss valuable customer data.
Businesses that relied on Amazon's huge cloud computer network to store and run their sites have been told last week's catastrophic crash also permanently erased data from many of those affected.
The failure of Amazon's 'bomb-proof' EC2 network last week caused thousands of websites to stop working, damaging the reputation of the technology.
Amazon - one of the world's foremost advocates of cloud computing - has remained tight-lipped on the crash, refusing to reveal how many companies use its web services or how many were affected by the outage.

NZ ranked fourth in global economic freedom rankings

New Zealand is the fourth most economically free country in the world, according to rankings released by a US think tank and the Wall Street Journal.

The Heritage Foundation's annual economic freedom index was released last week, with New Zealand moving up one position from fifth to fourth.

While the United States was downgraded from "free" to just "mostly free", the conservative think tank had almost nothing but praise for New Zealand.

"New Zealand continues to be a global leader in economic freedom," it said.

The index covers 10 freedoms, from property rights to entrepreneurship, in 183 countries. The foundation says it bases its idea of freedom on the ideas of economics' founding father, Adam Smith, and advocates free market policies.

New Zealand scored 82.1 out of 100, making it one of just seven countries above 80 classified as "free".

Particularly praised was New Zealand's "business freedom", with a score of 99.9, because, the report said, it was so easy to set up a new business here. It took only one day to start up a company in New Zealand, while the global average was 35 days, it said.

The result has attracted the attention of overseas commentators. In Britain's Telegraph newspaper, Nile Gardiner wrote that US President Obama should learn from New Zealand's "prosperity" and pursue a policy of greater economic freedom.

The top three in the rankings were Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia, with Ireland, Switzerland and Canada following New Zealand.

Last December, an Auckland company's link to smuggling North Korean weapons was investigated, with PricewaterhouseCoopers director Alex Tan saying New Zealand was known as an easy place to set up a shell company.

I still don't understand why people don't understand the fact the Traffic Rules are not for your "convenience", they are to save your lives! I see everyday a total disregard for their own lives and others too. Its as if their motto in life is "I DON'T CARE". I don't care about my life or yours or my family's.

How else can one explain a bicyclist or a rickshaw puller jumping traffic lights, when all other cars, trucks, bikes are waiting for the lights to turn green!

Almost everyone overtakes from the left! I have experimented this many times by leaving the right lane empty, people (cars, bikes, SUV's) still blare their horns and overtake from my left!!!!!!! My God! Will my surprise ever end?

At this point I remember two quotes which may explain this paradox!

I think people behave in traffic the same way they behave while moving about in other situations, like walking! About 2 weeks ago an accident happenned to me as I held open the lavatory door. As I opened the door to walk out, a colleauge was walking in. He simply brushed me aside as he walked in, bruising my arm in the process, and he was as unconcerned as he would be if he had banged against my car! :( He was a 6 footer, so I let him go, vowing never to hold open a door for any Indian again.... Too bad for this world, but no crime should go unpunished!

Mahabaleshwar is not a Hill Station!

No hard feelings, just some sun-burnt skin... from a visit to a hill station! This is not a joke; the last time I was sun-burnt, I was on the beaches of Goa, spending the entire day, half-naked, in the hot winters (New Year!) of Dec-Jan.
Firstly, this is not a complaint, just a bit of information for the people who are used to calling Mussorie, Nainital, Shimla, etc as hill stations; they are usually cold or colder, but never HOT.
yep, Mahabaleshwar is hot! really hot! ... and the best season to visit it is not summers! but monsoons and winters!!!!
You will definitely enjoy the place, as we did, if you just remember that "Mahabaleshwar is not a hill station", its a nice tourist spot!
We were a motley crowd, my wife, my sister, her friend, my wife's brother, and me.
