I was recently contacted by German fashion magazine Blonde to help with a piece they were doing about traveling to Seattle on a budget. I contributed a few photos (some of your lovely faces and oufits can be found in the photo slideshow) as well as suggestions on where to get the most for your money while traveling here when it comes to food and shopping. I sent them a list of a lot of places... it was so hard to narrow it down! They ended up including quite a few including my beloved Indian Summer, the ladies over at Kaleidoscope Vision, the good old Fremont Sunday flea market, Marination Station's mindblowing torta and my new favorite dessert spot: Hot Cakes in Ballard.

The Bees Knees

A bees knees has become my recent favorite cocktail to work off of at home. It is so easy to make and there are so many things you can add to it. Yesterday I ended up with what I think is my favorite variation of the drink yet. A traditional Bees Knees contains 2 oz Gin, 3/4 oz fresh lemon juice, 3/4 oz honey syrup (1:1 water and honey mixture) and a lemon twist for garnish. I've been playing around with adding in half lime juice, switching out the lemon for lime completely and adding in weird bitters to the mix. Here is what I ended up with yesterday... not really even a Bees Knees cocktail anymore but delicious nonetheless.

2 oz gin (lately I've been enjoying Seattle's own Counter Gin from Batch 206 Distillery)
1 oz lime juice
3/4 oz honey syrup (1:1 water and honey mixture)
2 dashes of dandelion & burdock bitters (you can switch this out for another bitter... lavender, aromatic, orange or no bitters at all)

add ingredients to a shaker and shake with ice until the shaker becomes frosty. Strain into a glass with ice then add the following:
a splash of citrus soda (I used Gazzosa soda which can be purchased at Sugar Pill on Capitol Hill)
a sprig of basil

Now, what in the world do I call this outlandish metamorphosis of a Bees Knees? Bees Ricky, Lime Basil Bee, Gin Fizzbee... Okay, so I'm good at making cocktails but not so good at naming them.

Guisepi Spadafora | Free Tea Party

I met Guisepi while on a pit stop in downtown Olympia on my way out to the Olympic Peninsula. I asked to take his photo for the blog because I really liked his style and he suggested we walk down the block and take the photo in front of his converted school bus. Once we got there he explained that he travels all over the country with Edna-Lu The-Teabus sharing free tea with people. He has completely repurposed this school bus and created a beautful living room-esque sanctuary to bring people together, drink tea and share a sense of community. The inside is all re-done with seating and cabinets made of wood and he has installed a fridge powered by solar energy, wood heated stove and a sink with filtered water heated by the engine of the bus... which by the way runs off of vegetable oil. Amazing.

Guisepi was in Olympia to serve tea to people for the Procession of the Species Celebration that was happening that day. I had never heard of this event but apparently we stopped in Olympia on their busiest day of the year. The parade draws about 30,000 people and is a celebration of Earth day.

I wish that we could have stuck around. It would have been fun to see the festivities unfold later in the morning and I really would have loved to have a cup of tea with Guisepi. What an incredible thing he is doing. Definitely check out Free Tea Party's website and follow where Guisepi and Edna are at in their travels on Facebook. My heart melted when I read all of the sponsors and people supporting what he is doing. It is so rare to find someone driven simply by the desire to make the world a better place. I imagine that anyone who meets Guisepi or learns about what he is doing with Edna immediately wants to get behind it or take part. I know I did.

Woodland Tulip Festival

I keep meaning to post these photos. On the way home from Portland a couple weekends ago we stopped at a diner for breakfast in a little town just over the Washington-Oregon border called Woodland. After our massive greasy spoon breakfast at American Family Diner our server asked if we were in town for the tulip festival... we told him that we didn't know about a tulip festival... he excitedly told us all about it and insisted we go. Can't say no to that.

The Woodland Tulip Festival is much smaller than the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival and as a result, much less crowded. It was such a peaceful and unexpected detour.

I'd show you photos of our breakfast in my normal fashion but once we saw those platters of food we completely forgot to take pictures. Yum.

What a small world. I took Chrissy's photo in Seattle 3 years ago then all these years later I happen upon her outside The Fresh Pot coffee shop on Mississippi Ave during my trip to Portland last week. She looked so lovely reading her book over coffee. She made this foldover backpack, I love it! What a simple and perfect design. It's like a clutch, a tote and a backpack all rolled into one.

I took the train down to Portland last week to meet up with Don and spent all three days of my visit walking aimlessly and stumbling upon the most amazing stores, restaurants and people. I really do adore that city.

I was so excited to find Lodekka parked on N Williams and Falling Street. This beautiful British double decker bus is filled on both floors with unique vintage finds and Erin was wonderful to chat with while taking a much needed break from walking.

I found Meredith outside of the Capitol Hill 8 Limbs after yoga class. I would never have guessed that she just finished a workout. So lovely. After yoga I'm a sweaty mess in stretchy pants and a sweatshirt. Ha!
