Japans White PS3

Sony in Japan just announced [JP, PDF] a bunch of changes and news regarding domestic sales of the PS3. The company said they’ll be bringing a PS3 in “Classic White” to the local market, in addition to the existing “Charcoal Black” (the first version of the PS3 in “Ceramic White” went on sale in 2008). There will be no technical changes, but Sony generally plans to ship bigger HDDs with the PS3 Slim in the future.

The new white PS3 Slim (also dubbed CECH-2500A LW) will be available with a 160GB HDD only, while the black model will be sold with a 160GB HDD (CECH-2500A) or with a 320GB HDD (CECH-2500A LW). Sony also says in Japan, the 120GB PS3 Slim will be sold under an open price model starting July 7.

Japanese buyers will be able to lay their hands on the new CECH-2500 series from July 29. Prices: $341 for the 160GB models (black or white) and $398 for the 320GB version. No word yet from Sony regarding international releases.

Review: Toy Story 3 (PS3, Wii, Xbox 360)

Toy Story 3 is a fun game for youngsters who want to play around in this colourful world. The variety of activities ensures there is something new to see in every level, and the missions offer plenty of simple fun for players eager to spend a few more hours with Woody and Buzz.

Pixar's films touch on themes so universal and immediate that both adults and children are drawn in. The games aren't as deep, but Toy Story 3 does a fine job of providing an entertaining and varied experience for younger players eager to spend more time with their favourite characters. The vast array of different activities ensures there is always something new to conquer, and the wealth of missions keeps the good times flowing.
Toy Story 3 doesn't rigidly follow the narrative of the movie. Rather, the story portion is a virtual tour of many of the set pieces found in the upcoming movie and the overarching fiction. This approach offers a varied experience that deftly introduces new gameplay mechanics in every stage without repeating what you have already seen.
The core of Toy Story 3 is platforming, but there is a lot more to do than just run and jump. Buzz Lightyear leaps between crumbling asteroids in outer space while shooting down robots with his laser; Woody chases down a train while riding his trusty steed, Bullseye; and Jessie helps free Hamm from a garbage conveyor belt.
The eight levels of the story take only a few hours to play through, but there is a lot more content in the Toy Box mode. This is an open-world adventure that allows you to take on missions from various characters and customise a town to your liking. Missions have you doing all sorts of different activities: tossing farm animals down a well to earn a special gold star; throwing dynamite at a mountain to carve your favourite characters' faces in the rock; or chucking army men off of roofs to get them to parachute onto a target.
There are races to take part in (of both the car and the horse variety), still pictures to recreate, and mayoral elections to rig. These bite-size challenges can be completed in just a few minutes, letting you quickly move on to a new activity if you aren't having much fun capturing criminals or rescuing aliens. None of these activities are deep, but there are so many on offer that it's easy to lose hours trying to make every citizen happy.
As you complete these various goals, you earn money to unlock new buildings, citizens and tools. The buildings each have their own uses, so once you erect a jail you have a place to lock up pesky criminals, and the tailor's shop is a fine place to give your alien friend some new clothes. Customisation tools are not just limited to what you would find in the Toy Story movies, either. You can dress your people up as Wall-E or put Nemo fins on the sides of your buildings if the desert theme seems a bit dry. This impressive number of unlockable goodies gives the game a lot of replay value.

An experimental aircraft, Solar Impulse, is set to take off from a Swiss airbase in the first attempt to fly around the clock fuelled by nothing but the energy of the sun.
Solar Impulse is aiming for the aviator's dream of "perpetual flight" and to prove a point by flying through the night, says the venture's founder, Bertrand Piccard, who was the first balloonist to circumnavigate the globe.
"The great adventure of the 21st century is no longer to go to the moon, because that has already been done, it's about moving society bit by bit away from its dependence on fossil fuels," the Swiss adventurer claimed.
"Solar Impulse is a lot more than an aviation adventure, it's a demonstration of what this new technology can bring to society."
The single seater clad with solar panels, which weighs little more than a saloon car but bears the wingspan of an Airbus A340 airliner, has completed 10 test flights since it first hopped along a runway seven months ago.
Packed with cutting-edge technology, the prototype's four sun-fuelled 10 horsepower electric motors have gently hauled it to high altitude, flying for hours on end.
Joint founder Andre Borschberg described a dawn flight on Tuesday as "totally cool" after a fright at the weekend when another test pilot felt vibrations as he stretched the plane to its limits.
The pioneering attempt is fraught. A 25-hour window of fine summer weather is needed from the moment the ultra lightweight plane takes off from Payerne airbase early on Thursday.
Former space shuttle astronaut Claude Nicollier said the most critical period would come overnight as daytime solar energy stored in batteries ran low and the team looked to the rising sun for a boost.
"We'll have very little energy and will have to make a decision on whether to continue or land," the flight test chief explained.
Another challenge will be keeping Borschberg alert for 24 hours.
"The plane demands a lot of attention, there's no autopilot. You can't snooze for a few minutes," Nicollier pointed out.
Nicollier and a retired NASA chief test pilot, Rogers Smith, will be among the multinational team guiding Borschberg gently to altitudes of up to 8500 metres over Switzerland and eastern France at speeds of about 70km/h.
Eleven years ago Piccard felt that a mysterious "invisible hand" gave him and British team-mate Brian Jones a lift just as their pioneering non-stop circumnavigation in the Orbiter balloon seemed doomed.
Today, little is being left to the supernatural as Solar Impulse tries to harness the forces of nature.
"As the person in charge of flight testing I try to introduce the techniques used in space flight, where safety is extremely important," said Nicollier.
Even Borschberg will be rigged up to sensors so that mission control can ensure he does not nod off.
Such experiences are not new for Piccard, who comes from a dynasty of technological pioneers and adventurers.
His grandfather Auguste set repeated altitude records in balloons in the 1920s and 1930s, and provided the model for Professor Calculus in the Tintin comic books.
Bertrand's father Jacques dived to the depths of the Marianas Trench in the Pacific Ocean in the bathyscaphe - a Piccard invention - with the help of the US Navy, setting a world record depth of 10,916m.
Solar Impulse is in the same spirit.
"We are setting such ambitious targets that we will not necessarily succeed on the first attempt," Piccard cautioned.
Work will soon begin on a bigger version of the aircraft that is designed to fly across continents and around the world in 2013 or 2014.
"We're convinced that if an aircraft can fly day and night without fuel, no one can come along and say that it's impossible to use the same technology for cars, air conditioning, heating, computers and household appliances," said Piccard.

The £200, US-made weapon is designed to kill sharks and bears and is normally sold to hunters and pilots. However, the internet has made such weapons much easier to find and buy over in the U.K.

This weapon injects a frozen ball of compressed gas approximately the size of a basketball at 800psi nearly instantly. The effects of this injection will drop many of the world’s largest land predators. The effects of the compressed gas not only cause over-inflation during ascent when used underwater, but also freezes all tissues and organs surrounding the point of injection on land or at sea. When used underwater, the injected gas carries the predator to the surface BEFORE blood is released into the water. Thus giving the diver added protection by diverting other potential predators to the surface.

I admit it: I’m a gadget addict. I like little devices that do neat things. At the same time, I also like to save money. What is a poor modern man to do with these two conflicting interests?
Simple. I buy gadgets that can pay for themselves (and even see a bit of return) over the long haul. This usually means I look for energy-efficient gadgets, but it also means that I try to evaluate things in terms of whether or not they can potentially return money to me. What’s nice is that many of these gadgets that save me money in the long run make a great deal of environmental sense as well.
Here’s a list of twenty five neat items I’ve found that can save a lot of money, along with their cost and the amount of time that it will take before their extra cost is paid for by their utility. Since they’re gizmos, they make for great gift ideas, plus you can use the argument that “this will save money” when suggesting the purchase of one of these items to your significant other. In fact, I actually started this list as justification to my wife for a few items I wanted to buy for myself.
1. Filtered Water Bottle

If you want to be “king geek” in your area, few things will top this. $8,500 will get you a windmill on top of your house, which can, by itself, take care of almost all of your home electrical needs. For an average household, the device will pay for itself in eight years; after that, it’s all gravy. Plus, you’re helping the environment by almost eliminating your load on the power grid.

Saving energy in small and large ways can add up to less expensive utility bills and fewer greenhouse gas emissions. Flipping out the lights when you leave a room, turning off your computer when you're not using it, and other habit changes are definitely part of the solution. But, there are also plenty of devices on the market that can do the work for you.

Here's a round-up of easy-to-find gadgets. They may seem a bit mundane, but some have new twists and others are old standbys that help you save energy without much effort.

Light dimmer. Dimming your lights saves energy, although how much depends on how much you dim them and what kind of dimmer you have. Older dimmers don't save energy, but newer models do, says Christina Kielich of the U.S. Department of Energy.
Motion-sensor light. People can use them in places where there's infrequent traffic (like the laundry room) and then they don't have to remember to turn the lights out, says Kielich. They're also great for outside use too because they activate only when motion is detected and don't operate during the daytime. (Another outside lighting idea is solar powered LEDs. Solar power is converted into electrical energy and stored in the rechargeable battery).
Power Strip. They range from basic to high-tech. Some have the ability to know when your computer goes into sleep mode or is turned off and can then shut down power to peripherals that are plugged into the same strip. You can find one with an occupancy sensor that turns off after a designated time period or even a system with a remote control.
Programmable thermostat. If you program it properly you can save as much as 15% a year on your heating bill.
Solar-powered charger. You can power your handheld electronics with power from the sun, rather than, or in addition to the grid. An added benefit: It comes in handy when you're on the go and you run out of juice.

Companies these days want to be seen to do their part when it comes to keeping the environment around us green, and every slight effort is trumpeted so that their efforts are not lost on anybody. Most recently, we have Sony Ericsson touting their GreenHeart initiative which sees products that fall under the GreenHeart movement to be degrees “greener” than regular ones, with the Sony Ericsson Cedar being the latest cellphone to fall under that category. This handset will target those who want to stay connected to family and friends through phone calls, text messages and social networking sites without breaking the bank while keeping their consciences clear that the phone itself has some green features along the way to leave a better planet for our kids.

Nintendo 3DS: The Unanswered Hardware Questions

The 3D consumer electronics trend reached a boiling point today when Nintendo announced the portable 3DS gaming device, a no-glasses 3D system promising simplicity and elegance for gamers seeking a 3D experience. After getting a hands on with the new gadget at E3, there is little doubt that the era of effective and sensible 3D has finally arrived.
That said, here at GeekTech, we care just as much about the engine under the hood as we do about the rims on our ride, and in that respect Nintendo still has a lot to answer regarding their revolutionary portable.

What's that 3D effect?

We've previously posted a rundown of the various 3D technologies available, and after prodding the Nintendo reps for more info, it's clear they aren't revealing their secrets just yet. However, given that the depth of the 3D effect on the 3DS can be turned up or down with a slider button, it appears that there is some degree of light diffusion happening directly in the device.
I predicted back in March that the 3DS would sport a parallax barrier screen, which works by diffusing separately polarized light to each eye. This may still be the case, but the specifics of how Nintendo is controlling the degree of depth is still a mystery.

Level Up Your Wi-Fi

Nintendo announced a robust Wi-Fi system-to-system communication mechanism that will transmit data on games you aren't even playing to other 3DS devices you may encounter in public. As awesome as this sounds for my Pokemon collecting game, I'm most worried about reliving the horrors of my WEP-only Nintendo DS. Expanded security options are a must for a new system and while you're at it Nintendo, please future proof your system and add some Wi-Fi N connectivity, too. The DS always felt stuck in the past in terms of hardware specs so a more future-thinking engineering design would help keep this device relevant in the eyes of geeks for years to come.

The Megapixels!

The 3DS sports three cameras, two on the back for taking 3D pictures and one front facing camera for head-tracking. But how many megapixels are we talking here? The DSi had one 3-megapixel camera and one .3-megapixel camera, but I'm hoping Nintendo we'll do much better than that for the 3DS.
The prospect of having a device that can take and display 3D pictures will be a massive selling point for the consumer market, but it'll need some good specs around that camera to ensure longevity on the gadget scene. From my hands-on with the device, I was not impressed at all with the picture quality. The 3D effect was great and fun to play with, but the actual pictures themselves would've looked horribly ugly on a typical 2D screen.

Multitouch?

The 3DS features a touchscreen, the same feature that made the orginal DS a huge consumer success. The Nintendogs demo being showed by Nintendo allowed people to use a stylus to control the screen.
While it worked great for this game, I wonder if Nintendo has ignored the huge multitouch gaming scene taking place on the iPhone. The DS platform has always prioritized interface before looks or hardware, so adding multitouch is something that can feel at home with the device, not to mention it would add another dimension for game designers to play with.
There's a lot left to uncover on the 3DS. What kind of beefy processor lies under the hood to power the 3D full motion pictures Nintendo is promising? What about screen resolution and that funky IR port on the back of the device I held? For the moment, Nintendo is mum on releasing any more info. I'm sure all the attendees at E3 gushing about Kid Icarus and Star Fox speaks volumes about the device for the time being.
Hopefully by the time the Tokyo Game Show rolls around later this year, Nintendo will be ready to spill whole can of beans on their portable wonder.

Well most of us are not gifted with such useless imaginative powers. But someone not only imagined it but also felt so compelled with his revolutionary idea that he went on to found a company and built the BBQ donut.
The BBQ donut has little leg space so you cant feel comfortable in it and just in case a hot meat piece fell on your lap then there would be no other option to jump off the donut.

9. The iPod/iPhone Headphones

No one is happy with the crappy headphones shipped with iPod and iPhones. It is just the worst mistake Apple made and is continuing to make it. These headphones have very poor sound quality and after little use, a chirpy chipping sound is produced when playing bass. It just seems that these headphones are cursed.
Most of the people have thrown these headphones away and use custom headphones with their iPod and iPhones.

8. Windows Millennium Edition

Windows Millennium Edition or commonly known as “Windows Mistake Edition” was the worst product ever launched by Microsoft. It was full of bugs and crashed very often. Just after the release of Windows ME, PC World article reviewed it and wrote

“users reported problems installing it, getting it to run, getting it to work with other hardware or software, and getting it to stop running.”

Apple TV is a dumb mistake that will always be remembered in Apple’s history. TiVo, NetFlix, Vudu, Youtube, and PS3 video download features all beat the shit out of Apple TV.

3. “Cell Mate” Hands Free Cellphone Holder

I don’t really need to say anything after you see the picture and the title above.Well,actually i do…what you see above is a failed attempt to make life easier for cell phone users by creating a hands free cell phone holder that actually looks like someone glued the cell phone to your ear.It only does one thing and that is “Make you look ridiculous”.There is nothing good about it,not even the title “Cell Mate” which totally reminds me of all the prison movies i have watched.

2. Pizza Scissors

This is probably the worst kitchen gadget ever in the history of mankind.I mean seriously, do we really need a pair of scissors to cut pizza ? is it that difficult to cut pizza? This creepy gadget combines scissors with a wedge shaped spatula to for the purpose of “lifting your hard to cut pizza “.If you ever need this gadget to cut your pizza then something is really wrong with your pizza or your head or both.

1. Shower Radio

The Shower Radio stands out in our top ten list of worst gadgets ever and that is not something to be proud of for its inventors or maybe it is,but that is not the point here.This waterproof,wireless radio was plagued by tuning issues and the fact that you need to keep the volume loud enough to overcome the cascading water.It is neither beautiful nor handy and was probably tailor made to be called the worst gadget ever.A poll on Telegraph[UK] regarding “The Worst gadget of All Time “also agrees.

Android Projector

Ah, here we go, Samsung's other cellphone with an integrated projector just got an official launch date. The Galaxy Beam (codename: Halo) with its 3.7-inch Super AMOLED display is now slated to hit Singapore in July. That means that the European and broader launch across Asia should be just around the corner if Samsung's claims from Feburary hold true. At launch, the world's first Android phone with a built-in DLP pico projector will be served version 2.1 of Google's confectionary delight. Specwise, we're talking 7.2Mbps HSPA data on 900/1900/2100MHz and quad-band GSM/EDGE, Bluetooth 3.0, 802.11n WiFi, an 8 megapixel autofocus camera with flash (front-facing VGA) and HD video recording, A-GPS, FM Radio, and1800mAH battery. Memory is confusingly listed as "4Gb + 2Gb + 1Gb + 16Gb MoviNAND" made worse by no mention of microSD though it was definitely there when we went hands-on with it at Mobile World Congress. See Through Ipad

Some of you may have seen our earlier post on the future iPad Looking Glass envisioned by Mac Funamizu. It features a see-through display capable of overlaying digitally-rendered pixels on top of the real objects seen through the transparent glass display. While that gadget may be further down the line, this transparent laptop that Samsung showed off at CES is definitely a big step forward.

Thanks to transparent thin-film transistors (TTFTs) and OLED technology, the circuitry and light-emitting components of the display can be made completely see-through! This is the sort of stuff that nanotechnology enables, tailoring materials and making transparent plastics conductive. Here is a schematic of what these light-emitting pixels look like:

The important point is, all these layers can be made with optically transparent materials. The transparent circuits can also be printed on flexible substrates (like… paper, or your clothes), then these displays can become fully flexible too.

If you are thinking technologies like this must cost a fortune… well, the processes involved in manufacturing an OLED display can potentially be much cheaper than making a LCD. So there you have it, a low-cost, see-through display that is also flexible and will not shatter on impact. If only I had this for my iPhone screen before it went down the stairs

Designer Jooyoun Paek might have been poked in the eye by a passing umbrella or two in his day.
