When you hear of IIT, what strikes your mind first?" Well before you answer the question, read what President A P J Abdul Kalam has to say about it.

The President, on Saturday inaugurated the PanIIT Global Conference 2006, the largest gathering of the IIT alumni at the Bandra-Kurla Complex in suburban Mumbai.

The President, in his usual witty way told the gathering that, while preparing his speech on Friday he had gathered some very interesting facts about what Brand IIT means to people in general. He called a few friends, from different walks of life and sought their reaction to the word 'IIT'.

Before he started, the President asked the audience if they were willing to hear positive, negative or mixed things about them. The answer was a resounding: 'mixed'!

His observations focussed on where the Indian Institutes of Technology lag and how IITians can actually make a difference.

He said he first called a professor of Indian origin in the US. "He was frank enough to say that it conveyed immediately nothing. He said 20 million children are born in India every year. Only one per cent joins the IIT. They are the best children in India. Wherever you put them they will do very well. The value addition by IIT is very low to the students, he pointed out."

The professor felt that, there may be many hidden Ramanujans and Einsteins amongst the vast majority of the students, which the IIT system does not touch.

"The greatest challenge for the Pan IITians and the nation is to find a mechanism to identify those needles in the haystack," the President said. He urged the IITians to look for hidden Ramanujans and bring them to the mainstream.

The President's next call was to an Army General who said they have nothing to do with the IITs. "While we see many engineering grads join the army we are yet to see any IITian the last two decades," the General had told the President.

The President said, while a professor from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore said that it is a great challenge for the professors to teach the students at IIT, as they are the 'cream of the cream', an IIT director said the institute stands for 'excellence and discipline'.

The President told the gathering that a friend told him that IIT takes the best students and delivers the best to the world, but the direct benefits for the nation in terms of knowledge products and intellectual property is rather minimal.

Kalam was quick to add that since they (IIT) selected the cream, the 'output is also cream'. The cream of the cream, he said, goes to the US and they become the best. "The best in and best out."

However, in a somber note he added that it is ironical that the IIT, which is mandated to produce the best minds for teaching and research is unable to attract the best faculty today.

The President emphasised the need for PanIITians to expand the spirit of IIT to touch every technical university in the country. "This will create a vast number of quality students and faculty. This is particularly important not only for taking care of the faculty needs of IITs but also for taking up the challenges of development that would be thrown open by the vision of the nation to become a developed one."

Continuing with what people from different walks of life has to say about IIT, the President said that a senior government officer had a significant point to make. "IIT stands for Brand India. However, of late it has become an exclusive institution in a world, which should become more and more inclusive and converging.

"Today more children from urban affluent families who can afford to pay Rs 10,000 per month on education alone could dream of joining the IIT.

"There are around 8 per cent of girl students in IIT, while the general average over 30 per cent in engineering.

"Many institutions of the same caliber as IIT in the western world, have been contributing much more to the industry than the IITs in India."

The industry-IIT interaction, he said, has to become an icon to put their brand on many products that will be used by the public on a daily basis. The President said there should be a little bit of IIT in every Indian. Since the Pan IITians have been in IIT, have been in India, seen the best of educational institutions and industry across the world, they can work with our present IIT system to bring this transformation of making 'IIT inside' in all of us Indians and in India, he added.

He urged the IITians to think over the independent views expressed and reinforce the niche and unique place that IIT occupies.

AB KI BAR MODI SARKAR

It was on a freezing January night at 1 Lodhi Estate, BJP’s nerve centre in the Capital, that a slogan was born. It was a simple tagline that Ajay Singh, Spice Jet co-founder, who was on the other end of a conference call in progress, came up with after brainstorming on other catchphrases that included “Desh ki pukaar, Modi sarkar” and “Iss baar, Modi sarkaar”.

The eureka moment was “Ab ki baar Modi sarkaar”, five words, which when dressed with Narendra Modi’s face, permeated through the consciousness of a nation and soon enough found themselves as writings on the wall, campaign pamphlets, hoardings, posters, TV and print advertisements. It was a lesson in rhetoric for the Congress that became a part of all the of Modi’s road to being the Prime Minister of the country. The has a huge role in uniting communities and changing its governance.

The Bharatiya Janata Party’s landslide victory, which saw it corner 282 seats in the 16th Lok Sabha, was the result of the collective effort of individuals who powered the party’s juggernaut. If Narendra Modi connected with the voters like no one else, then there was also a team of extraordinary men behind his media campaign that struck a chord with millions who voted for the party.

Such was the strength of the campaign that it cut across boundaries of caste, creed and even had kids humming, ‘Ab Ki Bar, Modi Sarkar’.

But who are the men behind the campaign that acquired a cult status?

It was Ogilvy-Mather’s agency Soho Square that created the BJP campaign as it is Ogilvy’s policy not to encourage political campaigns.

Soho Square did 200 commercials, 1,000 print ads in all languages and 100 radio scripts. But Piyush Pandey, executive chairman and creative director at Ogilvy & Mather, credits BJP’s success to the ‘fantastic product’ that it had in Modi and his ability to communicate with the people.

Those involved with the campaign told The Economic Times that they had done a series of surveys and considered many pitches before coming around a Modi-centric campaign. One survey said that Modi had a recall of 56 percent compared to 37 percent for the BJP.

In an interview to The Economic Times, Piyush Pandey says he wrote ‘Ab ki baar Modi Sarkaar' and 'Janta Maaf Nahi Karegi’.

He also accepted that he lead the campaign and told ET:

'Yes, I was leading and today I can admit it. It was important for me to not to come out in the open because this is a very confidential exercise. I would have wasted half my time talking to media.'

Short Article on Corruption in India!

Corruption not only has become a pervasive aspect of Indian politics but also has become an increasingly important factor in Indian elections.

The extensive role of the Indian state in providing services and promoting economic development has always created the opportunity for using public resources for private benefit.

As government regulation of business was extended in the 1960s and corporate donations were banned in 1969, trading economic favours for under-the-table contributions to political parties became an increasingly widespread political practice. During the 1980s and 1990s, corruption became associated with the occupants of the highest echelons of India’s political system.

Rajiv Gandhi’s government was rocked by scandals, as was the government of P.V. Narasimha Rao. Politicians have become so closely identified with corruption in the public eye that a Times of India poll of 1,554 adults in six metropolitan cities found that 98 percent of the public is convinced that politicians and ministers are corrupt, with 85 percent observing that corruption is on the increase.

The prominence of political corruption in India in the 1990s is hardly unique to India. Other countries also have experienced corruption that has rocked their political systems. What is remarkable about India is the persistent anti-incumbent sentiment among its electorate. Since Indira’s victory in her 1971 “garibi hatao” election, only one ruling party has been re-elected to power in the Central Government.

In an important sense, the exception proves the rule because the Congress (I) won reelection in 1984 in no small measure because the electorate saw in Rajiv Gandhi a “Mr. Clean” who would lead a new generation of politicians in cleansing the political system. Anti-incumbent sentiment is just as strong at the state level, where the ruling parties of all political persuasions in India’s major states lost eleven of thirteen legislative assembly elections held from 1991 through spring 1995.

Corruption in simple terms may be described as ‘an act of bribery’. Corruption is defined as the use of public office for private gains in a way that constitutes a breach of law or a deviation from the norms of society. Scales of corruption can be Grand, Middling or Petty and payment of bribes can be due to collusion between the bribe taker and the bribe giver, due to coercion or even anticipatory.

This was the outburst of Mahatma Gandhi against rampant corruption in Congress ministries formed under 1935 Act in six states in the year 1937. The disciples of Gandhi however, ignored his concern over corruption in post-Independence India, when they came to power.

Over sixty years of democratic rule has made the people so immune to corruption that they have learnt how to live with the system even though the cancerous growth of this malady may finally kill it. The Tehelka episode surcharged the political atmosphere of the country but it hardly exposed anything that was unknown to the people of this biggest democratic polity.

Politicians are fully aware of the corruption and nepotism as the main reasons behind the fall of Roman Empire, the French Revolution, October Revolution in Russia, fall of Chiang Kai-Shek Government on the mainland of China-and even the defeat of the mighty Congress party in India. But they are not ready to take any lesson from the pages of history.
