Skype, and Instant Messaging

We have recently been using Skype more than ever in my household. My Brother-in-law moved ahead of the family to Chicago; where we will be moving this summer. We use Skype on a daily basis to video chat with him. He has a three-year-old son, and he will video call him before bed every night. I will often use Skype to talk to friends while we play games together. We will sometimes do video calls, or just audio. Which is great for friends who do not want to video chat at the time, they can just join in with audio. I honestly talk more on services like Skype, than my cellphone. The downsides can be poor quality sometimes. My internet has not been the best lately, and this will sometimes make the quality of video or audio bad. However, thankfully not too often if internet is normal.

Though recently have moved to a service called Discord. Which is like Skype and Instant messaging in one. On discord you can Private message friends, or you can create your own discord server for group chats. In your discord chats, you can create voice channels for talking, or even listening to music. Also you have the ability to call someone using audio or video. You can even screen share with friends. I have done this several times, when friends are having issues with computer, or a program. What is great about discord is you can join other discord servers and chat there. This has been a huge program in the gaming community. For example I play minecraft on a server, and the server is linked to discord. This allows you to chat with those in game while you are not in game. They even have mobile apps, with almost all the same features.

Back in the day I used AIM(AOL Instant Messenger), Yahoo Instant Messenger, and Windows Live Messenger. However, since the days of Facebook, and other social media websites, I have honestly not used any traditional Instant Messenger. My friends and I will use Facebook Messenger to create group chats for instant messaging the most outside of discord. Facebook messenger application is a great application for instant messaging. I even use it for my text messaging app. You have the option to respond to Messages on messenger from Facebook friends, or you can respond to text messages using your mobile number. With messenger you can share photos, videos, links, play games together, send audio recordings and even can send friends money if you would like to.

Messenger can be used even from a business standpoint. On Facebook businesses can use the app to respond to customer inquiries. I have many friends who have business pages on Facebook. They will use the messenger to respond to customers. If you are ever on a business page, it will often tell you how quickly the page responds to messages. This can be the difference to some in sales, if a page can answer customers questions quickly, they will be more likely to purchase a product.

Facebook Vs Twitter Vs Instagram

For my social media assignment I chose Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. These are the three main social media websites I use on a daily basis. Below is a chart that compares and contrasts the three social media websites. Should also be noted that Facebook now owns Instagram. It's still a separate website and application, so I chose to include it.

Overall thoughts were that Facebook offers the most features, and has more applications available for users. I personally use facebook the most through their application, and other applications. When I use Instagram I usually post the image to twitter and Facebook using the setting in Instagram. Like I mentioned earlier Facebook now owns Instagram, but they still are separate apps, and websites. Though Facebook did integrate Instagram features a bit to their website, and your Instagram pictures you share to Facebook automatically go to a special folder. I use twitter the least, but go to it for more news type information or announcements. Like bands I listen to may use twitter to announce concert dates, and shows. Celebrities use it sometimes to announce which comic conventions they are coming to. I personally like Facebook the most, but still actively use all three.

I have actually had a LinkedIn page for several years. I made one while job hunting several years ago. It was under the recommendation of my Brother-in-law, that I create a page. He told me I should create one and list the things I can do on my page. That way friends, and co-workers, or previous employers can endorse my skills. This lets future employers know that others endorse these skills, so they can know what a potentially job candidate can do. Because on regular resumes I am sure people will sometimes embellish what they can actually do.

LinkedIn is always improving their website, and adding recommendations to make your profile the best it can be. I have not been on my page for about a year. I logged on to find new suggestions on how I can make more connections and make profile stronger. They will even give your profile a score. So you can know how good it is, and if you need more endorsements, or connections.

I will admit I don't use my LinkedIn page, or update it as much as I should. I feel I will use the page more when I graduate, and began to pursue a degree in my degree field. If you are actively job hunting, or recently out of college, I recommend utilizing LinkedIn. I would list all your skills and have them endorsed, connect to many people as possible. This will help make your profile stronger for potentially employers.

Podcast Websites

This week for my assignment I used a few websites for Podcasts. The first I tried out was Podcasts.com. It had a great userface and home page. However most of the podcasts were out of date. The second Podcasts website I tried was Soundcloud, and while Soundcloud had more up to date podcasts, I felt the userface and homepage was not as user friendly as podcasts.com. I ended up using nerdist, and npr websites to view the podcasts, and used soundcloud to upload my own podcast. To listen to my podcast, please see my blog sidebar.

My Voki

I had some issues adding my audio to the Voki. First my file was too big, so I split the file into two. Then I kept getting error messages. I tried multiple times through the week, and had the same issue. So I made a voki with speech to text of my podcast. Here is a small part of my Podcast in text to speech form. NPR's Ted Hour Podcast

I originally was going to use another podcast from NPR Ted Hour for my assignment. However, after seeing the Falcon Heavy Test Flight Video on YouTube this week, I say I am more of an interest in space at the moment. The Podcast I chose to include is called Peering Deeper Into Space. You can find the podcast on my Blog, or find the link below. Also Below will be a brief summary of the podcast.

Ted Radio Hour Podcast

Podcast starts with the hosts playing clips of his son from a while back when he was into space, and wanted to see aliens, to son now whose interests have waned some. They start out talking about Gravitational waves.

Allan Adams: who is a Theoretical Physicist, goes on to talk more about Gravitational waves and what they are. A collision of two cores from neutron stars happened 130 million years ago, but the waves didn’t reach earth till August 17^th, 2017. Scientists didn’t even discover Gravitational waves till 2015. Ligo was invented to detect Gravitational waves. Days after the Ligo had went live, the detector picked up the gravitational waves. No one expected to pick up Gravitational waves. They could test how fast the universe is expanding. The can measure the light coming from distant galaxies. Gravitational waves have now given scientists an independent measurement to determine how the universe is expanding. These waves can teach us even more about the big bang. Allan Adams, hope that someday we will be able to use Gravitational waves to see past the barrier in time to the first days of our universe.

Then Sarah Seger was brought on to talk. Sarah is one of the leading astrophysics in the world. She has one main goal in mind. To find a planet like earth. Today scientists like Sarah have identified thousands of new planets. Our galaxy is filled with hundred of billions of stars just like our son. Each of those suns could have many planets. Sarah believes given so many planets there has to be a planet like earth, that has other life out there. Sarah wants to find Goldilocks planets. Not to big or small, hot or cold. If we found a planet like earth, we would try to listen in, or send probes.

Natasha Hurley-Walker: astrophysics is next guest on the podcast. She works in Perth, because of radio silence zone, to get better reception. She works with radio telescopes. She gives an example how she uses radio telescopes to study the universe. People have been using radio telescopes since the 1950s. The computing has changed and they can connect the signals together to produce incredible images of the sky. She has observed over 300,000 radio galaxies.

Jedidah Isler: studies black holes. She studies super massive hyperactive black holes. These black holes are pouted directly at earth; however, we are at a safe distance. They call this distance cosmological distance. Everything changed in her studies in 2008, when NASA launched Fermi. Scientists think there is a super-massive black hole at the center of every galaxy, and are the center of everything.

Jenna and Juilen Podcast

I mentioned in my Podcast, that I often listen to many YouTuber podcasts on YouTube. This podcast isn't educational, and to many may just be a silly nonsensical Podcast. However, I always enjoy the silly banter between Jenna and her boyfriend Juilen. They are big animal lovers, and often have them in the studio with them, or will comment on their pets in the podcast. This may be a podcast better viewed as a Video-cast. However, I will often put them on to unwind in background as I try to sleep, or when I have had a stressful day. Their Podcasts topics vary. This weeks Podcast was about unsolved mysterious. Below is a basic summary of the podcast. You can find the podcast listed on my Blog. I will also include the YouTube video of the podcast here as well.

They decided to talk about Unsolved Mysteries as the topic of their podcast.

First mystery:

The Jamieson mysteries, which is about a husband and wife, and daughter who disappeared. Their bodies were found four years later, however, the cause of death is unknown. People say the husband was saying odd things before he died, about satanic battles. They may have been drug users, but some think cult thing may have been involved. The couple had said they were going to invest in property. Their bodies were found by a hunter. They were found miles away from vehicle. They then read some reddit users comments on the Jamieson mystery. Jenna and Julien discuss possible scenarios about what may have happened.

The second mystery:

· Lisa Lamb was found dead in a water tank of hotel. She was last seen on video getting on elevator. Lisa apparently had bipolar disorder, some believe this may have lead to her death. Some claim her last video was altered. She was found inside the water tank with her clothes. The tank was also hard to get too, and heavy to open by herself.

· The Third Mystery: Japanese officials detained a man who had mysterious passport from a European country called Taured. The Guy was shocked when he couldn’t find his country on a map. Which he claimed had been around for almost 1000 years. He was guarded overnight by immigration officials. In the morning he was gone, never to be heard from again.

Nerdist Podcast: Big Announcement Thing

I chose to listen and include this podcast in my WEBD220 assignment, because I identify as a "Nerd/Geek". I have followed Chris Hardwick on many platforms over the years, and he has honestly made me feel better about being nerdy, while making me laugh. Below is a summary of the podcast. You can find the Podcast on my Blog, and the link below to the podcast as well.

This is my summary of the latest Nerdist Podcast. In the Podcast they admit that things will be changing, but telling the audience to relax about changes. The host Chris then asks one of the other hosts Jonah, about some anxiety episodes he recently experienced. These podcasts are usually more for comedy relief, or to talk about nerd culture, so this was interesting to hear this discussed. I also have panic attacks so I felt bad for Jonah as he recounted having them from trying to work too much. I like that the hosts were able to be respectful about his anxiety issues. They joked, but never made him feel bad about having them. I have dealt with many people who personally do not believe that panic attacks are real, or how awful they can be. Apparently anxiety was also effecting Jonah with fertility issues. Once again was interesting to hear them talk about more serious topics.

Then the hosts got back to talking about what changes were coming to the podcast. Chris talked about how he sold Nerdist a few years ago to a new company, and that company was bought out recently by another big company. He said sadly there had been no communication with new CEO in regards to Nerdist, and him still being a manager/consultant for Nerdist. Chris said that even though he sold Nerdist, he still had full rights to the Podcasts. Due to lack of communication, Chris decided to reach out to other companies about his Podcast. He found a new company that was interested in producing his podcast. The change of companies would mean a name change for the Podcast. The new Podcast name will be ID10T, which is obviously a play on the word idiot. They said nothing else will change in regards to the Podcast, just the name.

The new Podcast will debuted with Tim Robbins on February 6th 2018. However, the feed will still be the same, so there will be no need to resubscribe for users. Chris also talked about how he thinks there is still plenty of room for growth in the Podcast industry. The new company may even play podcasts previews on the radio, but they will always remain free. The Balance

When working on my assignment this week, I found an interesting discussion post on http://shifthappens.wikispaces.comhttp://shifthappens.wikispaces.com. The post is titled simply "The Balance" I am a person who embraces technology, and new advancements with arms wide open. However, the original poster of this discussion post felt differently. They said that teachers need to stop trivializing technology as a new thing. They said that often new trendy tech items end up not being used. They talked about how more tech in classrooms, requires more education on new tech. This puts more training on not so tech savvy teachers.

The author of this discussion also felt that technology was 20-30 years too late to truly impact students. They feel by the time some of these kids become teachers in the future, newer tech will be out, creating a cycle. This is why they felt Technology will always be trivialized by teachers in the education field.

One person responded that in all career fields, people are having to adapt to increased technology. Fields such as the business and medical field. They eluded that the reason it is such an issue with some teachers could be financial reasons. Teachers are grossly underpaid in comparison to the business and medical fields.

The Essential Shift

I found the video "Did you know 2.0" full of very eye opening information. One subject the video mentioned that stuck out to me was that most of today’s college majors didn’t exist 10 years ago. I personally started college back in the fall of 2006. I was not sure what to major in at the time. So I completed a lot of my core content classes, and eventually took time off to work and save money I just could not find a major offered at my university at the time. My last year there, they started to roll out online classes. Now fast forward to present day, and I am back in school, attending American Public University, an online university. The way we are learning is so vastly changing.

When searching this topic on http://shifthappens.wikispaces.com/, I came across a discussion post called "The Essential Shift" The discussion post was started by a Teacher in graduate school. This teacher had seen "Did you know 2.0" in class, and the video had resonated with them. They talked about the importance of developing new ways to teach children. "We all develop and change and "shift," and so too must the ways in which we educate our children. This is what will keep us asking questions and then asking still more when we get the answers. To be static is to eventually wither away, uninspired and disinterested in more."

I even showed these posts, and the video to my sister. She is an Intervention Specialist at a STEM school. Her school embraces technology in so many aspects. She said it has been vital for helping so many students with different learning disabilities. She said as teachers, they must adapt to newer teaching methods, that incorporate technology because studies are showing that due to kids getting hands on with technology from such an early age, their brains are changing. The very way students process information and learn is rapidly changing.

Other educators also added to the discussion post. One person added that their two year old nephew at two already knew how to use the computer, when they didn't even use one till about seven years old. Another person added, "One of the wonderful things about teaching is that students remind us never to stop growing and thinking about change. While children are still children, they are growing up in times and being influenced in ways that I could not even imagine."

What Technology Do Students Need?

For my assignment, we were supposed to pick concepts from the "Did You Know 2.0" video to search on http://shifthappens.wikispaces.com. I found the discussion post called "What Technology Do Student Need" The discussion starts out with the original poster talking about how they applied for a small scholarship years ago. Part of the application process involved how their coursework used technology, and how technology would impact them in their future career. The poster decided to use their minor in Media Studies for the application. With Media Studies, the author could dabble in film, digital photography, Web Design, Digital Art.

The posted said they told the committee, that their dream was to become a teacher, and bring technology into the classroom. They then talked about how they have worked with children of all ages with some form of technology. They remarked how children are picking up how to use programs better than college level students. Even though the poster, grew up with tech savvy parents, they still see kids today learning it at accelerated level. People who responded to the initial discussion post, gave examples of using Google Apps for Education. Another response stated, that while technology is great, it should not be the only means of how children are taught.

Diigo

For my assignment this week in my WEBD220 class, we were supposed to use Diigo to create bookmarks relating to Web 2.0 information. I had never used Diigo before this week. I found it really easy to use. I added it as an extension to my Google Chrome Browser. There are also other ways to use/install Diigo.

When I first installed it, it gave me information about the Free and premium versions of Diigo.

I just proceeded to try out the free version of Diigo. I also liked that as soon as you opened up the extension, there were plenty of information for using Diigo and using it with Google Chrome.

I also really liked the sidebar navigation. What I found cool about Diigo, is you can save Bookmarks, PDF, Images, Notes, and even Kindle Books. I have a Kindle/use the Kindle application, so that personally will come in handy.

I would say that Diigo overall has many advantages. I loved how easy it was to install and setup. I liked the organization, and being able to add tags to things. Also liked the wide variety of things I could save to Diigo. I liked being able to save images, and even notes. I feel from a school standpoint this would be handy for keeping track of image sources too for school projects. The main disadvantage I see to Diigo, is if it's enough for me to go out of my way to use. I personally use Google for almost everything. I can bookmark from my phone browser and have it on my laptop browser. I just don't know If I will go out of my way to open up Diigo, or to install another application on my phone.

Flickr

I have previously used Flickr back during the old days of MySpace. However, with Facebook having unlimited photo space, I stopped using Flickr to share/upload my photos. My experiences with Flickr this week, were both good and bad. I could not remember my old login from years ago, so had to create a new account. Apparently Flickr is not owned by Yahoo. So upon signing up it also created a yahoo account. I felt this process was a little long. Once my account was made, I found the website easy to use. I uploaded and tagged my first two photos with ease. However, as i was uploading the third image I received an error message from Flickr. Their website was having issues, and I was unable to use it again for about an hour. This did not leave a good impression for Flickr. It even happened again a few days later when I was exploring tags.

Overall I found Flickr easy to use. Their site navigation was well organized and easy to use. I immediately knew where to upload photos, given they used an icon I often see associated with uploading files.

Below are the images I uploaded to Flickr for our assignment in my WEBD220 class. We were supposed to create three images illustrating Web 2.0 concepts. Then we were supposed to upload to Flickr and create tags for the images.

For this image I made a Venn Diagram to Illustrate the concept of RIA. RIA,which stands for Rich Internet Applications. On Flickr RIA tag had 344,938 tags. However, most were unrelated to Rich Internet Applications. I also added the tag RichInternetApplications; which yielded 1,656 results. These results were better related to the concept at hand.

For this image, I created a Word Web illustrating what exactly is User Generated Content. The UserGeneratedContent tag yielded 4,616 results.

For this image, I created a Word Cloud of words that make up Social Networking. SocialNetworking tag proved to be the most popular at 14,163.

Mozilla Firefox

As a part of our assignment on Open Source software for my WEBD220 class, we were asked to try an Open Source Browser. While there were many options that popped up during my initial internet search; the most popular had to be Mozilla Firefox. Click here to download Firefox for yourself. I haven't used Firefox since Google Chrome came out in 2008. I didn't stop using Firefox due to any issues with the browser, I just am a person who uses Google and its all its features immensely. I have had a Gmail account since its launch, A YouTube account since 2005, I use Google Photos, and Google Drive. Using Chrome just made things easier since I rely on Google for so much.

This week was like a reintroduction to Firefox for me. Obviously Firefox has undergone many changes in 10 years. While with Google Chrome I was able to customize things, I feel Firefox offers a little more in that aspect. When I tried to open a new tab, I was greeted with the options of customizing right off the back.

Think my favorite thing about Firefox is how easy it is to use, and to customize. Upon using further I was given additional opportunities to customize.

I think that has been my overall enjoyable thing about Open Source software, the ability to easily customize. I know with Chrome I can change things up too, but I feel it's not as easy or to level that Firefox allows. I think my favorite customization has been the themes. Not only were there themes available to easily change it too, but an area to find more themes.

After using Firefox this week, I am very impressed. The browser was easy to use, and customize. I really enjoyed the themes, and features it had to offer. Similar to Google Chrome I can connect my bookmarks on mobile and on the PC. As someone who would consider themselves a "die hard" Google Chrome user, I found myself enjoying Firefox immensely. I would highly recommend Firefox as a Browser.

LibreOffice Review

In my class I was tasked with testing out three Open Source software programs. When researching Open Source software, LibreOffice came highly recommended. You can download LibreOffice here.

LibreOffice is available for download on Windows, Linux, and on OS X. When you start LibreOffice you also have the option to create a Writer Document, Calc Spreadsheet, Impress Presentation, Draw Drawing, Math Formula, Base Database.

I am very impressed with the amount of software LibreOffice offers. To begin my review I once again started with the Writer Document application. As a student, I use Microsoft Word a lot. The Writer Document reminded me of an older version of Word. Similar to how OpenOffice looked. However I would say LibreOffice looked a bit newer than OpenOffice. OpenOffice and LibreOffice both have the traditional drop down menus, while Word and Microsoft has integrated the ribbon into most of their programs. Just like OpenOffice, LibreOffice has a sidebar feature.

Just like in OpenOffice you can toggle through Properties, Styles and Formatting, Gallery, Navigator. However they added Pages as a category in LibreOffice when compared to OpenOffice which had pages located differently in the Sidebar. LibreOffice give that it's an Open Source program, offers the ability to customize features. Just like OpenOffice you can create custom toolbars.

My overall opinion on LibreOffice was that I was very impressed. I found the software easy to find, and download. Hard to believe the software is free. Between LibreOffice and Open Office, I would personally use LibreOffice. However, they are both great products! I think out of habit I will continue to use Microsoft Word. However, if you are looking for a great alternative and do not wish to pay for Word, these would be great products for use in the workplace or school environment.

OpenOffice Review

This week in my class we were tasked with trying out three Open Source Software. The first of the three I tried out was OpenOffice. OpenOffice is available for download on Windows, Linux, and on OS X. You can download Apache OpenOffice here. When you start OpenOffice, you are met with multiple options for software you wish to use.

OpenOffice has a variety of software to choose from. I started my review by testing out their Text Document software. As a student, I use Microsoft Word a lot. My first impression of OpenOffice's Text Document, was that it reminded me style wise of an older version of Microsoft Word. I am not saying this as a negative for OpenOffice, but just as comparison to Word. In Microsoft Word I have grown so accustom to what Microsoft utilizes called the Ribbon. OpenOffice has the more traditional categories with drop down options. However, I noticed the sidebar feature in OpenOffice that I really like.

In the Sidebar, you can toggle through Properties, Styles and Formatting, Gallery, Navigator. You can also close the Sidebar if you do not wish to have it out. Another plus side to OpenOffice is that given it is Open Source software, you can customize things inside the program. My favorite is the ability to create custom toolbars.

My overall thoughts on Apache OpenOffice, was that I am impressed. The fact that the software is free, Offers a variety of applications to use, and is customization. I also tried out the Presentation Software for another course, and was also impressed with its capabilities as well. I would recommend this software to others, who perhaps can't afford Word, or wish to have the ability to customize the software and features.

Brian Williams compiled a list of Top 10 Blogs Following Web 2.0. Number one on the list was a Blog called Tech Crunch. When beginning my assignment for my Web 2.0 class, I never imagined that I read that many Blogs anymore. I get a lot of my News, and content for YouTube nowadays. Well once I saw Brian's list of top Blogs, I realized a lot of news and entertainment sites I follow, are just Blogs! I guess when I thought of Blogs in my head, I pictured personal Blogs. TechCrunch is a major Blog. Their posts are done by various authors, unlike personal vlogs. The main type of content TechCrunch talks about is tech news, business related news to the Technology world. There are some other entertainment posts on their Blog, however overall I would say it's mostly technology orientated. They sort their news in the following categories; Startups, Mobile, Gadgets, Enterprise, Social, Europe, Asia, Crunch Network, Unicorn leaderboard, I also like how they display their social media at the top of their Blog, making it easier for me to follow their posts on different social media platforms. In fact in one of my other courses last week, I actually used TechCrunch to share an article with my classmates in our forum posts. Their Blog is a great place to come to learn about the latest Tech news, or news on giant companies in the tech field. I can see why it was included in the Top 10 Blogs Following Web 2.0.

Another Blog mentioned on Top 10 Blogs following Web 2.0 is Mashable. I was familiar with Mashable before our assignment. I am a person who immensely uses social media on a daily basis. I have seen Mashable mentioned/shared a lot on social media outlets such as Facebook, and Twitter. Mashable covers Entertainment, Culture, Tech, Science, Business, and Social Good. To those who do not know what a Blog is, they would think that Mashable was simply a new website. In typical Blog Fashion their posts are shown and organized most recent to oldest. What I also like about Mashable is how they sort their posts. Each post and topic is given a keyword, like the ones I mentioned above. This makes it easy to find posts that pertain to subjects that interest readers the most. I can see why so many are utilizing Blogs to cover news. News happens 24/7 it's important to keep everyone up to date on information. Using the Blog format and showing us the most recent, helps readers stay up to date as stories may change.

First Blog/What is a Blog?

I am currently enrolled in WEBD220, and for our first assignment, we are supposed to create a blog. A blog is kind of like an online journal. The author of the Blogs can talk about anything they like. Some use them to record day to day activity. However, even businesses have utilized using Blogs. Blogs are shown in reverse chronological order; meaning the most recent entry appears first. Blogs make it easy to search for older entries as well, older entries are archived. I have seen them archived on other blogs by year and month. When I got this assignment I immediately thought, well I am not sure people use Blogs as much as they used to. I watch a lot of YouTube nowadays and see many people do what is known as Vlogs. Vlogs are video blogs essentially. However, after looking at Brian William's Top 10 Blogs Following Web 2.0, I realize I see Blogs daily for things such as news, weather, and even entertainment, and not even realize they are Blogs. There are many great videos on YouTube talking about Web 2.0. I think this video does a good job explaining Web 2.0 in a short video.
