According to all of your science books and that one episode of Animaniacs, Albert Einstein, Time Magazine's Man of the Century, invented the theory of relativity. Certainly, when you hear the name Einstein, you undoubtedly will think "He discovered relativity" or "He came up with that E=mc2 equation" or "He was a total sex maniac." Only one of those things is true. (It's the sex maniac part.)

Who Actually Invented It?
Henri Poincaré, mostly. Poincaré was the foremost expert on relativity in the late 19th century and was most likely the first person to formally present the theory of relativity. If you were Einstein and you wanted to write about relativity, you might consider meeting with the foremost expert on relativity, yes? If you answered "yes" to that question, then you're not Einstein at all.

According to Einstein's famous On the Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies, which contains his theories on relativity, Poincaré, despite publishing 30 books and over 500 papers, is not worth mentioning. It's true, pick up Einstein's paper if you don't believe us, (you won't): Poincaré doesn't receive a single reference, unless you consider plagiarism to be some kind of indirect reference. As a matter of fact, Einstein does not reference, footnote or cite a single goddamn source in his entire paper.

Really? Not one source? Even we cite sources, Albert, and we're friggin' Cracked. What the hell?

We don't want to jump to any conclusions here. Maybe Einstein's paper didn't contain any sources because he genuinely didn't read any other current physics texts or papers. Maybe he was seriously that smart. According to Peter Galison's Einstein's Clocks, Poincaré's Maps: Empires of Time, Einstein and a small group of his fellow nerdlings formed a group called The Olympia Academy and would regularly gather to discuss their own works as well as the works of current scientists. The book goes on to specifically mention how Poincaré was one of the scientists that Einstein and his battalion of nerds would discuss.

Shoots that whole "maybe Einstein didn't read any other papers" theory right to shit, doesn't it? It's interesting that Einstein sat studying and discussing the work of Poincaré for years, published a book that featured a theory that was startlingly similar to Poincaré's, and then didn't reference Poincaré once in the entire book. Wait, that isn't interesting? It's plagiarism. It's total bullshit plagiarism. Good luck sexing your way out of this one, Einstein.

How to open songs.pk in countries where it's Blocked like India

Recently Due to order from the supreme court the site www.songs.pk was blocked in India, This was done because the very obvious reason , PIRACY , that this site was promoting and poor music industry could not sell their original copies cause even before they could hit the market the songs were already their in Peoples iPod all cause of this site. They must be thinking "why only us" haha . There are many other site Like the Djmaza and downloadming which are good alternative to this site still the government thought of shutting this down [may be cause of that .pk stuff] just a joke :P.

But if you are someone who would still like to visit that site and use it just because you don't want to use the alternative, fine .Even if your ISP has blocked the domain the ISPs in other countries have not so you can definitely use a proxy server to reach this site and then download songs as you did before . But I think these Proxy site could not provide the resume support. But Still if you want to .Just give this a try.

Agneepath (Hindi: अग्निपथ) is the remake of the 1990 Hindi film of the same name. It is directed by Karan Johar's former assistant Karan Malhotra. Steve Jobs, who transformed the worlds of personal computing, music and mobile phones, died on Wednesday at the age of 56 after a years-long battle with pancreatic cancer. The co-founder of Apple Inc, one of the world's great entrepreneurs, was surrounded by his wife and immediate family when he died in Palo Alto, California.

His death was announced by Apple and sparked an immediate outpouring of sadness and sympathy from world leaders, competitors and other businessmen including Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

The Silicon Valley icon who gave the world the iPod, iPhone and iPad had stepped down as chief executive of the world's largest technology company in August, handing the reins to long-time lieutenant Tim Cook.

He was deemed the heart and soul of a company that rivals Exxon Mobil as the most valuable in America.

"Steve's brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve," Apple said in a statement.

"His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts."

Apple paid homage to their visionary leader by changing their website to a big black-and-white photograph of him with the caption "Steve Jobs: 1955-2011." The flags outside the company's headquarters at 1 Infinite Loop flew at half mast.

Jobs' health had been a controversial topic for years and his battle with a rare form of pancreatic cancer a deep concern to Apple fans and investors.

In past years, even board members have confided to friends their concern that Jobs, in his quest for privacy, was not being forthcoming enough with directors about the true condition of his health.

Now, despite much investor confidence in Cook, who has stood in for his boss during three leaves of absence, there remain concerns about whether Apple would stay a creative force to be reckoned with in the longer term without its visionary.

Jobs died one day after the consumer electronics powerhouse unveiled its latest iPhone, the gadget that transformed mobile communications and catapulted Apple to the highest echelons of the tech world.

His death triggered an immediate outpouring of sympathy.

"The world rarely sees someone who has had the profound impact Steve has had, the effects of which will be felt for many generations to come," Gates said. "For those of us lucky enough to get to work with him, it's been an insanely great honor. I will miss Steve immensely."

Outside an Apple store in New York, mourners laid candles, bouquets of flowers, an apple and an iPod Touch in a makeshift memorial.

"I think half the world found out about his death on an Apple device," said Robbie Sokolowsky, 32, an employee for an online marketing company, who lit a candle outside the store.

Cook said in a statement that Apple planned to hold a celebration of Jobs' life for employees "soon".

Apple, NeXT, iPhone A college dropout, Buddhist and son of adoptive parents, Jobs started Apple Computer with friend Steve Wozniak in 1976. The company soon introduced the Apple 1 computer.

But it was the Apple II that became a huge success and gave Apple its position as a critical player in the then-nascent PC industry, culminating in a 1980 initial public offering that made Jobs a multimillionaire.

Despite the subsequent success of the Macintosh computer, Jobs' relationship with top management and the board soured. The company removed most of his powers and then in 1985 he was fired.

Apple's fortunes waned after that. However, its purchase of NeXT -- the computer company Jobs founded after leaving Apple -- in 1997 brought him back into the fold. Later that year, he became interim CEO and in 2000, the company dropped "interim" from his title.

Along the way Jobs also had managed to revolutionize computer animation with his other company, Pixar, but it was the iPhone in 2007 that secured his legacy in the annals of modern technology history.

Forbes estimates Jobs' net worth at $6.1 billion in 2010, placing him in 42nd place on the list of America's richest. It was not immediately known how his estate would be handled.

Six years ago, Jobs had talked about how a sense of his mortality was a major driver behind that vision.

"Remembering that I'll be dead soon is the most important tool I've ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life," Jobs said during a Stanford commencement ceremony in 2005.

"Because almost everything -- all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure -- these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important."

Manchester United post record profits

Manchester United posted record operating profits of £110.9million for the past financial year.

The club have also recorded a record revenue of £331.4million - an increase of £45million from last year and passing £300million for the first time - according to figures for the year ended June 30, 2011.

United, who won the Barclays Premier League title and reached the Champions League final during the period, have also recorded a commercial turnover of £103.4million.

The latest results come as the club consider a plan to raise up to £614million by floating on the Singapore Stock Exchange.

The figures contrast with those of last year when losses hit a record £83.3million, largely due to the costs of a bond issue.

The 15.7% rise in commercial revenues is hugely encouraging for the club and does not include a new £10million-a-year training kit sponsorship deal with DHL.

The Singapore floatation is being considered by the Glazer family, the club's owners, as a means of addressing debts.

Net debt is down to £308.3million from £376.9million according to the new figures.

It is thought the floatation could be completed by the end of the year.

United, having struggled to sell corporate boxes last year, have also enjoyed an increase in matchday turnover from £100.2million to £108.6million.

Ek Tha Tiger (Hindi: एक था टायगर) is an upcoming Hindi language romantic thriller. The film will be produced by Yash Raj Films and directed by Kabir Khan. This will be his third collaboration with the banner after Kabul Express (2006) and New York (2009). Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif were confirmed to play the lead roles at a press conference held on May 3, 2011 at Yashraj Studios.^[1] It is scheduled to release on 1 June, 2012.

This one is delightfully interesting to read.

There were two rickshaw-walas vying for our business, when we wanted to go to Sankat-Mochan temple in Benaras. I agreed to go with the one, who was about 20 years of age, seemed like a regular young rickshaw-wala, but I found something interesting about him. I was not proved wrong.

He wanted Rs 50, we said Rs 30. We settled for Rs 40.

Here are the highlights of the conversation that ensued, while we rode the rickshaw:

"Aap kahan se aaye hain?"

"Delhi."

"Bijness, ya kaam karte hain?"

"Naukri karte hain."

"Kismein?"

"Internet mein."

"Humara bhi kuch wahin kaam lagwa dijiye."

I just chuckled.

"Main try kar raha hoon engineering padhne kee. Achchi naukri lag jaayegi tab."

"Achcha?" I asked a little interested.

"Haan, delhi mein Guru Gobind Singh Indraprashta University mein engineering ke liye apply kiya hai. Achchi hai woh university."

"Haan, achchi hai", I agreed.

"Haan, kal hee maine JEE bhi diya."

"JEE matlab, IIT ka?"

"Haan, Joint Entrance Examination" he pronounced it perfectly.Just to make it clear to me what JEE stood for. "Mushkil hota hai exam."

"Haan, 2 saal toh log padhte hee hain uske liye, asaan nahin hai."

"Delhi mein Akaash coaching institute hain na?"

"Haan, hai."

"Aapne kya padhai kee?"

"Main engineer hoon, aur phir MBA bhi kiya."

"Kahan se engineer?"

"IIT Delhi se."

He swung back, surprised, a little delighted, and smiled. "Ok,

aapke liye Rs 30."

Swati and I laughed.

Swati asked "Padhai kab karte they IIT ke liye?"

"Bas, rickshaw chalaane ke baad raat mein". Then he added

"Kismein engineering kee aapne?"

"Chemical."

"Toh aapki Chemistry toh badi strong hogi."

"Nahin, aisa nahin hai."

He continued "Yeh bataiye....jab Mendeleev ne Periodic Table

banaya tha tab kitne elements they usmein?"

Now it was my turn to get surprised. He was quizzing me. I said "Shayad 70-80."

"No, 63" he said sharply. "Kaunse element kee electronegativity highest hai?"

Swati was laughing, and I didnt try too hard and said "Pata nahin."

"Flourine", he said confidently. Without a break he asked,"Kaunse element kee electron affinity highest hoti hai?"

Now I was laughing too and said "Nahin pata"

"Chlorine. toh aapka kaunsa subject strong tha?" clearly having

proven that my chemistry wasn't a strong point.

"Physics", I said.

"Achha, Newton's second law of motion kya hai?"

I thought I knew this one. "F=ma", I said.

"Physics is not about formula, it is understanding concept!", he reprimanded me in near perfect English. "Tell me in statement"

I was shocked. Swati continued to laugh.

I said "ok, Newtons second law, er....was...."

" 'Was' nahin, 'is'!Second law abhi bhi hai!" he snapped at my

use of 'was'.

Surely, my physics wasn't impressing him either. "Yaad nahin, I said"

"Force on an object is directly proportional to the mass of the

object and the acceleration of the object", he said it in near perfect

English. "Aapne M.Tech nahin kiya?"

"Nahin, MBA kiya"

"MBA waale toh sirf paisa kamana chahte hain, kaam nahin karte."

"Nahin, aisa nahin hai, paisa kamaane ke liye kaam karna padta hai." Didn't think too highly of me apparently anymore.

In a minute we reached our destination. We got off and I told

him that he must and should definitely study more, and that I thought he was sharp as hell. He took only Rs 30, smiled and began to leave. I got my camera out and said "Raju, ek photo leta hoon tumhari". He waved me off, dismissed the idea and rode off before I could say anything more....leaving me feeling high and dry like a spurned lover.

Damn, what a ride that was! India is changing, and changing fast.

British and U.S. scientists have confirmed that an atomic clock at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) near London is the most accurate long-term t

The NPL-CsF2 is a cesium fountain clock that's used as a standard for International Atomic Time and Universal Coordinated Time.

The machine is apparently accurate to within two 10 million billionths of a second. Not bad, I guess.

The NPL's Krzysztof Szymaniec joined scientists from Pennsylvania State University in evaluating the clock. The team published its results in the journal Metrologia.

The analysis concludes that the clock will lose only a billionth of a second every two months, and represents an unprecedented accuracy. Cesium clocks are usually expected to lose or gain a second over tens of millions of years.

"Together with other improvements of the cesium fountain, these models and numerical calculations have improved the accuracy of the U.K.'s cesium fountain clock, NPL-CsF2, by reducing the uncertainty to 2.3 × 10^-16--the lowest value for any primary national standard so far," Szymaniec was quoted as saying by the NPL.

In the U.S., the National Institute of Standards and Technology operates the NIST-F1 cesium fountain clock, which as of summer 2010 had an uncertainty of 3 x 10^-16, meaning it would take more than 100 million years to lose or gain a second.

That will be billions of years before the sun dies, taking the Earth with it, so I expect an update on this from a future blogger.

IBM goes for really, really, really big data

According to an article in this week's MIT Technology Review, IBM researchers are working on a new 120 petabyte data repository made up of 200,000 conventional hard disk drives working together. The giant data container is expected to store around 1 trillion files and should provide the space needed to allow more powerful simulations of complex systems, like those used to model weather and climate.

The new system benefits from a file system known as General Parallel File System (GPFS) that was developed at IBM Almaden to enable supercomputers faster data access. It spreads individual files across multiple disks so that many parts of a file can be read or written at the same time.

GPFS leverages cluster architecture to provide quicker access to file data, which is automatically spread across multiple storage devices, providing optimal use of available storage to deliver high performance. It's also the storage engine for IBM's Watson, which could easily beat me at Jeopardy.

Here's the interesting part: 120 petabytes equals roughly 24 billion 5 megabyte MP3 files, which sounds like a lot. But contrast it against the enormous volume of data being amassed from sites such as Facebook that in 2009 were already storing 25 terabytes of logs a day and you see that only 4,915 days could be stored.

With the volume of data online and offline growing exponentially, I have a feeling that 120 petabytes won't sound so crazy in five years or less. It also goes to show that there's room for innovation around storage and file systems, despite the maturity of the market

iPad met its match in the TouchPad

On Friday, August 19, Apple's iPad finally met its marketing match. That's when Hewlett-Packard's TouchPad went on sale for as little as $99 and triggered the kind of buying frenzy that had been reserved exclusively for products from Apple.

Over the last year and a half, no other tablet had been able to come as close as the TouchPad to eclipsing the fixation that consumers have had on the iPad.

Roger Kay, principal analyst at Endpoint Technologies, believes the TouchPad's demise should give Apple pause. Especially if such a product were repeated by another major tablet vendor in the future. (Did I hear someone say Amazon?)

Kay explained. "If you were a big company like HP and you were doing a new category product launch, it would not be weird to have a marketing budget in the hundreds of millions," he said in a phone interview. "So, you could have used that money to subsidize the price of the TouchPad and you can flood the market with these devices that are worth way more than you have to pay for them. And get them in everybody's hands. Get everybody talking about it. That could have been the loss leader entry into the market," he said.

"So, it wasn't really a product failure, it was a pricing failure."

And the ingredients for making a good run at Apple were there. Platform: the TouchPad was a self-contained "vertical" platform, in which HP controlled both the hardware and software. (Like Apple.) Resources: HP's size and resources are enormous. (Like Apple.)

Of course, aggressive pricing would have had to continue along with significant design and software improvements. (Would more apps have followed? We'll never know.)

Though inventory sold out online and at stores in less than 12 hours, the TouchPad is still listed for $99.99 on HP's site. The product was a success, says analyst Roger Kay.

It's hard to disagree with Kay's reasoning, because the consumer response bears this out. In addition to the lines that formed at Best Buy stores in the U.S. on Sunday (and remember this happened with only about 12 hours warning, not the months of hype that precedes an Apple product rollout), there was equally frenzied buying of the TouchPad online.

I found plenty of anecdotal evidence at stores. Best Buy was getting so many calls over the weekend that some stores had prerecorded messages about the TouchPad's availability. And in a visit to a suburban Los Angeles Best Buy this week, a sales associate told me he was still trying to get his hands on one. He was speaking simply as a consumer who wanted a TouchPad, not as a Best Buy sales associate.

And HP keeps the interest stoked via a Twitter feed dedicated to updating the TouchPad's availability.

Of course the argument can be made that this was simply a pricing issue--the same visceral response seen when hordes stampede to a half-off, all-you-can-eat day at Souplantation (hey, it's a California thing).

Maybe. But it also means tablets are too expensive. Motorola and Samsung are not going to generate big sales numbers in the U.S. with $499-and-up tablets. There are just too many more useful alternatives at $499 or even $429. They're called laptops.

(Apple gets a pass because it's Apple: probably the only consumer device company that can get millions of people--include me in that crowd--to pay $1,299 for a MacBook Air instead of $799 for an HP Pavilion or other Windows laptop equivalent.)

Which brings us to Amazon. Rumor has it that the Amazon tablet will be cheap and possibly subsidized. If true, that could spell success.

The moral of the story? The only way to combat the iPad--for the time being at least--is with cut-throat pricing. HP proved this, however accidentally.

Hope For Parkinson's Patients Brought By Stem Cell Investigation

Researchers from a study, led by the University of Edinburgh in collaboration with UCL (University College London), have for the first time createdstem cells from one of the most rapidly progressing forms of Parkinson's disease. The study was published in the journal Nature Communications.

This will benefit research into the condition, as it will allow researchers to model the disease in the laboratory to clarify why certain nerve cells die.

Funded with a £300,000 grant from the charity Parkinson's UK, the investigators took skin samples from a patient diagnosed with one of the most progressive forms of Parkinson's disease. They then used these skin cells to produce brain nerve cells affected by the disease, making it easier to monitor the effectiveness of potential new medications that could slow or stop progress of the condition.

The goal would be to find drugs that can prevent death of these crucial cells (neurons), which as a result of Parkinson's break down.

Dr Tilo Kunath, of the University of Edinburgh's Medical Research Council Centre for Regenerative Medicine, explained:

"Current drugs for Parkinson's alleviate symptoms of the condition. Modeling the disease in a dish with real Parkinson's neurons enables us to test drugs that may halt or reverse the condition.

This investigation provides an ideal platform to gain fresh insight into the condition, and opens a new area of research to discover disease-modifying drugs."

The neuron cells were created from a patient with a type of Parkinson's that progresses rapidly and can be diagnosed to individuals in their early 30s. In comparison to the general population, those with this type of Parkinson's have twice as many of the genes that produce a protein called alpha synuclein.

Even though this type of Parkinson's is rare, the protein involved is connected to virtually all forms of the disease.

"Understanding such a progressive form of the disease will give us insight into different types of Parkinson's. As this type of Parkinson's progresses rapidly it will also make it easier to pick up the effects of drugs tested to prevent nerve cells targeted by the disease from dying,"

..said Dr Michael Devine, of UCL's Institute of Neurology. Dr Kieran Breen, Director of Research and Development at Parkinson's UK, stated:

"Although the genetic mutation that leads to this progressive form of Parkinson's is rare this exciting investigation has the potential to bring about a huge breakthrough in Parkinson's research.

This is just the kind of innovative research that Parkinson's UK is committed to funding as we move closer to a cure."

New Delhi: On the sixth day of his hunger strike, social activist Anna Hazare Sunday vowed to continue his protest to maintain pressure on the government till parliament passes the civil society's version of an anti-graft bill.

Addressing thousands of his supporters, Hazare alleged that the government's intentions in creating an independent and powerful anti-graft watchdog were "not good".
"The government does not have good intentions. Their intentions to curb corruption are bad. The government deceived us," the 74-year-old activist said.
He asked his supporters to be ready for a bigger revolution if the government failed to pass the version of the Lokpal bill he and his aides want.
"I request all you that if the government doesn't pass the bill, there will be a movement in the country never seen before," he thundered.
He said the government had "betrayed" him and his team members over the bill they wanted the government to pass to curb rampant corruption.
"If you cannot get the bill, I ask you to leave the chair," he said, amid a huge applause.
Hazare spent the sixth day of his fast at the Ramlila Maidan, a sprawling public ground in the capital, with thousands of his supporters gathering to cheer him up.

How to integrate your Facebook and Google+ streams

How many social networking sites is too many? For some, Google+ answered that question, but for many of us, the desire to try new things and keep up with our people is just too strong. For those on the fence, a Chrome extension called SGPlus can help avoid digital clutter. It lets you read Facebook and Twitter feeds within G+ and--better, maybe--lets you post to all three at once. Here's how to use it:

Install the SGPlus extension for Chrome. (For now, anyway, it doesn't work in other browsers).
Step 1: Install SGPlus extension.
Read through the tutorial. It will pop up every time you reload G+ until you have completed it, so you're better off just clicking through the first time.)
Click the SG+ icon at the top right of your browser and select the Facebook or Twitter tab. Your only option will be "Sign In." Click it, and validation should proceed automatically. Once you're signed in with either or both, you can set up features from the same tabs, though the defaults should work fine for most people.
Step 3: SGPlus options.
SG+ detects when you load a Google+ page and should stream your FB and Twitter feeds on your G+ page. Note that it might take quite a while after your first installation. Your posts on G+ should also start to show up in FB and Twitter if you've enabled that feature, though again it may take a while at first.

SGPlus is very much a work in progress. It may take a few tries to log in to FB or Twitter, and there are occasional glitches with feeds, but for now, it can still make your social networking life much easier.

Match report: Eng v Ind, 4th Test – Day 3

London, Aug 20: England’s No. 3 batsman Ian Bell completed a classy double-century as the hosts piled on 591 for the loss six wickets before declaring their first innings on Day 3 of the fourth Test match at the Oval.

Asked to bat, the Indian top-order, with the exception of Rahul Dravid, once again put up a dismal performance. With Dravid and MS Dhoni at the crease, the visitors trailed by 488 runs with five wickets in hand at stumps on the rain-marred third day of the match. Graeme Swann did the bulk of the damage, grabbing three wickets in the final session.

Earlier, resuming on the overnight score of 457 for three, England scored 134 runs in the first session of the day for the loss of another three wickets.

S Sreesanth got the first breakthrough of the day, dismissing night watchman James Anderson. In his next over, the Kerala pacer got Eoin Morgan to edge a ball to MS Dhoni behind the stumps bringing Ravi Bopara to the crease.

Meanwhile, Bell continued to hit the ball all over the park to reach 235 runs, his highest score in Test cricket. The 29-year-old Warwickshire batsman reached the 200-run landmark with a four off Ishant Sharma. But it was Suresh Raina who did the job for India once again, trapping Bell leg-before.

Soon after the wicket of Bell, India missed a chance of running Bopara out. Bowler Amit Mishra failed to collect the throw from fielder Virender Sehwag and displace the bails that would have found Bopara stranded far from his crease. At lunch, Bopara was batting on 44 and Prior on 18 runs.

As was the case on Day 1 of the Test, rain made an appearance as the teams walked into the pavilion for lunch; this time, rain halted play for almost four hours. When the skies cleared and play resumed, England chose to declare their first innings on 591 runs for the loss of six wickets. Bopara was left stranded six runs short of his half-century.

Gautam Gambhir, who suffered a concussion in a fielding mishap on Day 2, did not take the field today; in his absence, Dravid opened the innings with Sehwag for India.

Although Sehwag hit two boundaries off James Anderson, the bowler once again got the better of Sehwag in the first over he bowled at him. Sehwag’s dismissal, out lbw, left India on eight runs for the loss of one wicket at the end of the first over of their first innings.

VVS Laxman returned to the dressing room a couple of overs later signaling an all too familiar batting collapse for the visitors. Sachin Tendulkar, joined Dravid at the crease, bringing with him some hope of a fightback.

But the England pacers continued to hit the deck hard; a bouncer from Stuart Broad even hit Tendulkar’s helmet. But Tendulkar replied by sending the next ball racing to the fence to open his account. Dravid-Tendulkar went on to surpass Gordan Greenidge and Desmond Haynes’ partnership record (6,482 runs in 148 innings) and now hold the world record for the all time highest partnerships with 6520 runs in 134 innings at an average of 50.93.

However, the veterans could not extend their latest partnership beyond 55 runs. Tendulkar’s attempt to sweep a Graeme Swann delivery saw the ball pop high in the air only to land safely in the hands of Anderson in the slips; Tendulkar’s departed on 23.

With just a few overs of play left, Suresh Raina followed Tendulkar back to the hut, out for a duck having faced 29 deliveries. The left-hander was sent back stumped by Matt Prior off Swann, already responsible for two Raina dismissals this series before this one. In his next over, Swann followed up with the wicket of night watchman Ishant Sharma, an inside edge resulting in a simple catch by Alastair Cook at short-leg.

The last over of the day saw a noisy appeal for Dhoni’s wicket being turned down; the batsmen, in reply, ended the day’s proceedings with a four off Swann. In the midst of the ruins, Dravid predictably put together a superb half-century, holding the innings together with little help from the top order.

Effects of Ragging – Why Ragging Should be Banned

The ruling of the apex court of the country against ragging should be welcomed by all right-thinking people. Ragging is a bitter experience, which many unfortunate students of our country have to face sometimes of the other during their long academic career. In ragging “fresh students” of an educational intuition are often teased, tormented and even roughed up by the senior students mostly of the same institute under the exercise of “introduction”.

In ragging no one knows what would be the extent of suffering for the ragged ones. It can range from some innocent and harm less leg pulling to harsh physical and mental assault. It is this latter type of ragging which is objectionable, abhorring and a matter of great concern. And it is this type of ragging which comes under the scanner of the judiciary which has at last had to intervene to stop this nuisance altogether or at least curb it to a considerable extent.

Only the victim knows how painful, harmful, traumatic ragging can be. Often the perpetrators of the crime of ragging cross all the limits of civility and humanity. They will go to any extent to satiate their sadistic pleasure while ragging their juniors. They derive unbound joy when they find their helpless victim totally at their own mercy. They enjoy every moment of the entire show. More the suffering of the victims, the more is the enjoyment of the ragger and the onlookers. The victim of ragging may be subjected to a wide variety of sufferings, which may range from digesting a barrage of filthy language to bearing physical assault of all sorts.

Ragging often leaves an indelible unpleasant mark in ones life. It often leads the victim psychologically shattered and physically wounded. There are examples when the victim of ragging, unable to bear the unimaginably pain and shock of physical and mental torture, lost their mental balance forever. There are cases of many bright students who’s careers are ruined due to ragging. After undergoing the pains of ragging, these students were so much frightened that they never return to their classes again and they never again dared to join any other institute to pursue their studies any further!

Ragging, infact is a blot, a slur on the face of our so-called civilized and educated society. It is more disparaging since it originates from the centers of education – a school, a collage or any other educational institutions. It is disparaging because its actors are senior students themselves. The youth, the students who are supposed to be the future of the nation and are expected to do some constructive work for the country and for themselves are unfortunately found here engaged in villainous activities in perfect Bollywood style.

The court has had already declared ragging as illegal. But in spite of the legal ban, little sincere effort has been made to eradicate this evil from our educational system. Prior to the latest direction from the Supreme Court, the Raghavan committee had already offered some suggestions to stop ragging. The suggestions were: – to hold the educational intuition responsible for ragging. It also suggested that the concerned educational intuition itself should lodge an F.I.R. with the police informing the later about the incident and to prevent a recurrence of raging should take stern action against the offender and avoid them the strictest of punishment. If the concerned institution fails to take up the matter seriously, the parents of the victim or the victim himself could also file an F.I.R. with police. in such cases the police also has a right to take action against the concerned educational institution. The committee also suggested that the courts also should take up cases of ragging on priority basis.

The supreme court has now directed the educational institute to mention clearly in there prospects itself that if found guilty of ragging, the erring students will be turned out of the intuition. This might act as a deterrent but the need is to educate such criminal minded students before hand, during their early formative years. They must be taught the value of love, humanity, compassion and mutual respect for each other in the society. These qualities are instilled in a child by their elders at home and in school. But alas! In the present fast and utterly materialistic life, the elders of our society are found wanting in their duty to give proper advice and instil human values in the younger generation. To make a better and healthier society we have to educate the members of the younger generation to become good human beings before they aspire to be a big success in their careers.
