2-day Advanced Chemotherapy and Radio Therapy
Program

The Association of Nursing Services Administration of the Philippines, Inc. (ANSAP) is inviting registered nurses who are specializing in the field of oncology nursing to their 2-day Advanced Chemotherapy and Radio Therapy program on May 17 and 18, 2010, 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Chinese General Hospital and Medical Center in Manila.

ANSAP has been accrediting training programs for IV Therapy and certifying IVT Nurses for several years now. With its track record in IV Therapy Training and accreditation, and its unwavering desire to future enhance the practice of nursing in the Philippines. It has been developed standards for Advance Intravenous Radiotherapy and Advance Intravenous Chemotherapy practice in nursing.

To ensure safe and quality nursing care to special types of patients, ANSAP is now in the process of certifying nurses with basic IVT certification for the following programs:

1. Advance Intravenous Radiotherapy for Nurses
2. Advance Intravenous Chemotherapy for Nurses

ANSAP will pursue its process of evaluating documents and documents and accrediting IVT trainings in the said advances practice in nursing in accordance with the standards for Advanced Certification for the said programs.

Pre-requisite is Basic IV therapy license. The fee for the 2-day Advanced Chemotherapy and Radio Therapy program is Php 1,500/program.

The Aklan Cooperative Mission Hospital in collaboration with the Association of Nursing Service Administration of the Philippines (ANSAP) National Chapter invite IV therapy nurses who are in their senior level positions (i.e. Senior Nurses, Charge-Nurse, Head-Nurse, Nurse-Supervisor and Chief Nurses) to join their Training of Trainers (Preceptors Training in Basic IVT) on April 25, 2010 (Sunday) from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Aklan Mission Hospital.

This course for Trainers and Preceptors was designed in order to train them for the required instructional design, methodology, program planning, and budget planning of any IV program and follow-up of individual return demonstration. IV therapy nurses who are now occupying managerial positions may attend this one-day training to qualify for the trainership/preceptorship in any IV Therapy Program.

Registration fee is Php 1,400 (inclusive of handbook).

Registration starts at 7:30 a.m. and IVT Refresher Courses are conducted from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Each course gives participants 8 CEU (Continuing Education Units). The completion of 24 units qualifies IV therapy nurses to renew their IV therapy nurse cards.

ANSAP National Trainers conduct the following IVT Refresher courses.

** Pre-registration is required to ensure quality learning as Aesculap Academy keeps the maximum number of participants to 50.

3+3+2 IVT Accomplished Forms

The Association of Nursing Service Administrators of the Philippines (ANSAP) has revised the IV Therapy Accomplished Forms.

In ANSAP's 8th edition of the Nursing Standards on Intravenous Practice, the case completion requirements for IV Therapy was revised from the 6+6+2 to 3+3+2. This means that a Registered Nurse needs to complete 3 cases of initiating/maintaining peripheral IV infusions; 3 cases of administering IV drugs; and 2 cases of administering and maintaining blood and blood components in order to obtain a license in IV Therapy.

The prescribed IVT Accomplished Requirements format by ANSAP or the respective ANSAP-accredited hospital is the form where the 3+3+2 cases should be written. It must be duly signed by the trainers/preceptors who witnessed the completion; and the chief nurse wherein the registered nurse has undergone the completion.

IVT Hub has provided the IVT Accomplished Forms in short bond paper size (8.5" x 11") and long bond paper size (8.5" x 13") formats in PDF.

ANSAP Mid-year Convention 2009

The Association of Nursing Service Administrators of the Philippines (ANSAP) is cordially inviting registered nurses on its Mid-year Convention on August 20, 2009 at the Fiesta Pavilion of the Manila Hotel, Roxas Boulevard, Manila.

"We will be expecting 800 or more delegates from ANSAP-member hospitals, both from the government and private sectors," ANSAP President Maria Linda G. Buhat revealed in her invitation letter.

With the theme, "Nursing Administrators: Leading Beyond Limits," the mid-year convention will gather Nursing Service Directors, Chief Nurses, Nurse Managers and Supervisors, Head Nurses, Charge Nurses and Staff Nurses respectively coming from all over the country.

ANSAP is the only Philippine nursing organization legally mandated to administer and accredit basic IV therapy training for nurses and promulgates the IV Nursing Standards of Practice in the country.

WHO on Hand Hygiene

The final, revised and updated version of the World Health Organization (WHO) Guidelines on Hand Hygiene is now available online.

“The WHO Guidelines on Hand Hygiene in Health Care provide health-care workers (HCWs), hospital administrators and health authorities with a thorough review of evidence on hand hygiene in health care and specific recommendations to improve practices and reduce transmission of pathogenic microorganisms to patients and HCWs. The present Guidelines are intended to be implemented in any situation in which health care is delivered either to a patient or to a specific group in a population. Therefore, this concept applies to all settings where health care is permanently or occasionally performed, such as home care by birth attendants. While ensuring consistency with the Guidelines’ recommendations, individual adaptation according to local regulations, settings, needs, and resources is desirable. (WHO 2009)”

Ceftriaxone interactions

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is updating earlier recommendations about the interaction between the antibiotic ceftriaxone and intravenous products that contain calcium. In certain circumstances, this interaction can cause dangerous precipitates to form. Ceftriaxone is sold as Rocephin and also as a generic. Products that contain calcium include Ringer's solution, Hartmann's solution and parenteral nutrition formulations that contain calcium.

FDA had previously recommended that ceftriaxone and calcium-containing IV products not be administered within 48 hours of one another for patients of all ages. This has now changed. It is no longer necessary to wait 48 hours in patients over 28 days old, provided that certain precautions are followed. And FDA is still stressing that ceftriaxone must not be used in neonates if they are receiving or will receive calcium-containing IV products.

Ceftriaxone and products that contain calcium may now be administered sequentially to patients older than 28 days of age, as long as the infusion lines are thoroughly flushed between infusions with a compatible fluid. However, ceftriaxone must not be administered simultaneously with intravenous calcium-containing solutions through a Y-site. FDA also continues to advise practitioners not to reconstitute or mix ceftriaxone with products that contain calcium.

There are no data on whether ceftriaxone might interact with calcium-containing products that are given orally. It's also not clear whether intramuscular ceftriaxone might interact with calcium-containing products, either IV or oral.

Intravenous Therapy nurses whose IVT licenses are about to expire or have lost their IVT cards, the Association of Nursing Service Administrators of the Philippines (ANSAP) reiterates the following procedures for renewal, revalidation or loss of IV Therapy Card.

Renewal/Revalidation of IV Therapy Card

The IV Therapy Card is renewable every three (3) years for all IV Therapy Nurses, Preceptors and Trainers. Renewal shall require completion of IV Related Updates equivalent to 24 CEU or Continuing Education Units as approved by ANSAP.

Requirements for Renewal of IV Therapy Card

Please compile all requirements, including processing fee, in one envelope. Incomplete requirements will NOT be processed.

1. Current PRC ID Card - Photocopy
2. IVT Card - Original
3. IVT Update Certificates of Attendance - equivalent to 24 CEU - Original and Photocopy
4. Two (2) pieces of 2x2 ID picture (light green background)
5. Processing Fee of Php 400.00
6. For change in status, attach a photocopy of Marriage Contract.

Loss of IV Therapy Card

Replacement of lost IV Therapy Card may be obtained from the National ANSAP office upon submission of the following:

1. Affidavit of Loss
2. Certificate of Attendance, Basic IVT Training - Original and Photocopy
3. Certificate of Training Issued by ANSAP - Original and Photocopy
4. Two (2) pieces of 2x2 ID picture (light green background)

Coming Soon: 8th "Green Book"

The Association of Nursing Service Administrators of the Philippines (ANSAP) will be releasing the new "green book" this year.

This was disclosed by ANSAP Assistant Secretary and National Trainer Merceditas R. Tiongson, R.N., M.S.N. in an IV Therapy Refresher Course conducted at the Aesculap Academy in Ortigas yesterday.

"The 8th edition of the Nursing Standards on Intravenous Practice will be released by June or July 2009," said Tiongson.

Popularly known as the "Green Book",the 8th edition has come a long way from its maiden issue release last February 4, 1994. It was first used in Cagayan de Oro City where the Training for Trainers was conducted last June 9-11, 1994, after the ANSAP Board Members and Advisers had undergone the Training for Trainers at the Philippine Heart Center on October 1993.

The "Green Book" has become the "Bible" of every Filipino IV Therapy nurse that revisions were made to incorporate policies such as the Philippine Nursing Act of 2002, PRC-BON (Professional Regulation Commission-Board of Nursing) resolutions, and current trends in the practice of intravenous therapy.

ANSAP believes that a need to an up-to-date edition of the Nursing Standards on Intravenous Practice encompasses the duty and responsibility of the Filipino IV therapy nurse to render a "compassionate, committed, confident, conscientious and competent" care to patients.

Red Cross Summer Training Sched

IVTeam Philippines Hub in its commitment to help serve student nurses, nursing graduates and practitioners announces The Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) Caloocan, Valenzuela, and Rizal chapters' safety training programs and activities this summer.

Echoing the directive from PNRC's Deputy Secretary Gwendolyn T. Pang, the 96-strong local chapters of PNRC were instructed to intensify their safety training programs.

“We have various programs which are very relevant and practical to implement this season,” Pang said

The PNRC Safe Summer Campaign covers safety institute, first aid and basic life support training and even swimming courses which are timely for summer.

First Aid and Basic Life Support Courses are the most requested training from different companies, schools, rescue groups and individuals which aims to disseminate information on safety practices during emergency situations.

On the other hand, Basic Life Support – Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (BLS – CPR) training focuses on life threatening emergency situations which deals not only with the adult victims but for children and infants as well.

Also, all chapters are encouraged to conduct lecture demonstration and mass education on adult CPR- Basic Life Support (BLS) and life saving tips to beach-goers.

PNRC Chairman Senator Richard Gordon also added that this season is also timely to campaign for Red Cross membership and to encourage more people to be members of the organization.

“Let us take this as an opportunity not only to intensify the Safety Services training program but also to strengthen the membership program of PNRC. We should encourage everyone to avail our membership or join our volunteer program,” Gordon added.

Due to insistent inquiries of schedules on nursing-related seminars, workshops and trainings, IVTeam Philippines Hub has posted Portable Document Format (PDF) schedules from various hospitals, specialty organizations, and institutions.

The country's premier nursing organization, Philippine Nurses Association (PNA), regularly holds continuing professional education such as seminars on various nursing topics and skills fair at the National Headquarters in Malate, Manila.

Basic Life Support (BLS), Basic ECG Courses, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) training courses are offered by The Heart Educational Advancement for Research and Training (H.E.A.R.T) Foundation in coordination with the Department of Education Training and Research of the Philippine Heart Center.

The Professional Education and Training Service (PETS) of the Lung Center of the Philippines conduct regular BLS-CPR (Basic Life Support and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) courses, and workshops on topics such as Smoking Cessation, Pulmonary Tuberculosis and Asthma Management.

Nursing-related seminars and training workshops such as BLS, ACLS and Basic EKG are also scheduled by the Critical Care Nurses Association of the Philippines, Inc. (CCNAPI).

Cardio-Renal Nurse Training Program, and RENAP Accreditation Exam for nurses who would like to be a Certified Renal Nurse (CRN) are conducted by the Renal Nurses Association of the Philippines (RENAP).

IVTeam Philippines Hub will try to post other training and workshop schedules in the future with the aim of helping not only IV therapy nurses but also general practitioners in their quest to serve competently and confidently their patients.

Intensive care errors 'frequent'

Errors in the administration of injected medication in intensive care units occur frequently, a study across 27 countries suggests.

Austrian researchers collected data on more than 1,300 patients, 200 of them in the UK, over a 24-hour period.

Of the 441 patients affected, seven suffered permanent harm and five died partly because of the error, the British Medical Journal reported.

Medical staff often cited stress and tiredness as contributing factors.

Data was collected by researchers from Rudolfstiftung Hospital from a total of 113 intensive care units, of which 17 were in the UK.

Nearly half of the affected patients suffered more than one mistake during the period covered.

The most frequent errors were related to the wrong time of administration and missing doses altogether.

Cases of incorrect doses and wrong drugs being given were also reported.

A total of 69% of the errors occurred during routine care.

Mistakes occurred with many types of drugs, including insulin for diabetics, sedatives and blood-clotting drugs.

The doctors and nurses who took part in the study cited stress and tiredness as a contributing factor in a third of mistakes.

Recent changes in the drug's name, poor communication between staff and violation of protocols were also mentioned.

The odds of an error being made increased significantly for the most severely ill patients. Researchers said this reflected the complexity of their care.

Lead researcher Dr Andreas Valentin said the problems identified applied to all the health systems involved in the study.

He said just one in five units reported no adverse events during the 24-hour period studied.

"It is a really serious problem. The administration of injected medication is a weak point in patient safety," he said.

"With the increasing complexity of care in critically ill patients, organisational factors such as error reporting systems and routine checks at shift changes can reduce the risk of such errors."

A Patients Association spokesman said: "The findings are worrying. We know staff work really hard in intensive care units, but there are no excuses for errors.

"Protocols must be followed and managers should be carrying audits to make sure they are."

In a statement, the Intensive Care Society said the aim must be to refine care to minimise drug errors.

It said that critically ill patients often required complex care, with the use of many different drugs, some unusual, which were often administered using specialist equipment.

"The urgency of treatment can also mean that these drugs have to be located rapidly, prepared efficiently and administered quickly to prevent further deterioration.

"Unfortunately, this pressure does mean that the combined total incident rate is almost inevitably higher than in care areas where fewer medicines are required."

The society said many units had developed training programmes to increase patient safety, including measures to highlight and learn from "near misses".

Work was also under way to standardise concentrations of some drugs often given to critically ill patients, refine the use of antibiotics and minimise the risk of adverse drug reactions.

The Department of Health said it was working closely with the National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA), professional organisations and pharmacists to reduce the incidence of medication errors, which it described as "clearly an international problem".
