New Life Cycle at 60, Sigmoid Curve, dan Beng Ming Nian.

Pada bulan Maret, 2022, saya pernah menulis article dengan key message sebagai berikut “I did hope to get another challenge and gain more continuous learning, to give more colours to fill my second life cycle according to the SIGMOID CURVE” (Ref.: https://iwanbintaro.blogspot.com/2022/03/new-life-begins-at-60-part-2.html?view=flipcard ).

Dalam TEDx Talk nya di bulan November, 2015, (Ref.: The most productive years of my life …., https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VfkBDRa9J1I ), Lloyd Reebs menceritakan bahwa hidupnya menjadi lebih produktif justru pada umur 60an ke atas. Hal ini sesuai dengan “Sigmoid Curve” yang menunjukkan bahwa pada umur ini, terjadi “decline phase” dari siklus pertama dalam kehidupan professional, yang bersamaan dengan “learning phase” dari siklus kedua. Ini sebabnya cukup banyak pemimpin dunia justru mencapai puncak karir-nya di atas umur 60an, bahkan di atas 70an.

Hubungannya dengan “Chinese Astrology”.

‘Chinese Astrology’ terdiri dari siklus 12 tahunan yang direpresetasikan dengan 12 ‘animal characters’, Zodiac Year of Birth (Beng Ming Nian) adalah awal dari setiap siklus 12 tahun. (Ref.: https://iwanbintaro.blogspot.com/2020/09/new-life-begins-at-60.html?view=flipcard ).

Jadi …., apa hubungannya?

Ternyata ‘Learning Phase’ dari siklus kehidupan professional yang kedua berdasarkan teori pada “Sigmoid Curve” dimulai pada awal siklus ke-6 dari “Beng Ming Nian”, yaitu di awal umur 60 an.

Lalu ….., apa yang terjadi pada kehidupan saya sendiri?

Di awal umur 60 an (awal dari ‘Learning Phase’ siklus kedua dalam kehidupan professional menurut Sigmoid Curve), ada dua learning yang telah memperkaya pengetahuan saya:

1. Dampak Lingkungan dari ‘excessive’ dan ‘un-managed’ plastic waste – yang telah memicu saya membuat YouTube channel Obrolan Sabot (Santai-Bebobot), serta membawa saya ke pekerjaan selama 6 (enam) bulan sebagai freelance surveying consultant for sustainable packaging.

2. Mereview dan menemukan pola umum pada BUMN yang bergerak di bidang produksi dan distribusi barang-barang konsumsi masyarakat (baik food, non-food, maupun produk farmasi) – dan terdapatnya “Room for Improvement” yang cukup besar di sini.

Khusus terkait dengan learning ke-2, di tahun 2013, saya menemukan sesuatu dalam pekerjaan sebagai konsultan selama 6 (enam) bulan – sehingga pada Linkedin status, saya tulis begini “Offering System Improvement Opportunities to Government Owned Consumer Goods Companies”.

Apakah negara serius untuk mem-progress ekonomi nasional secara significant? Walaupun relatif bidang yang kami geluti ini tidak sangat besar terhadap ukuran keseluruhan BUMN yang ada, paling tidak ada dampaknya bila mau memanfaatkan ‘our competencies and experience’, dan ada opportunity untuk memungkinkan berkibar-nya kembali merek-merek dalam negeri yang telah cukup banyak dilibas oleh merek-merek asing.

THE BEST WAY TO WIN.

I went through several enthusiasms at the end of my corporate career. The first one was at the product launch event of the company where I was the Managing Director (Ref.: https://www.beritasatu.com/news/511400/magicard-perluas-penetrasi-pasar-di-indonesia ), the second one was when I decided to resign from the respective company (Ref.: https://iwanbintaro.blogspot.com/2020/04/dance-with-life-and-grapple-with-life.html?view=flipcard ).

Later on, when I started a socialization initiative on environmental issues, especially the impact of un-managed plastic waste, the third enthusiasm came (Ref.: https://iwanbintaro.blogspot.com/2020/09/new-life-begins-at-60.html?view=flipcard ).

Is there another enthusiasm? The fourth one? Do I have new enthusiasm every couple of years?

Yes, there is!!

I would call it during the period ‘my freelance career’. As a freelance project manager, sustainable packaging surveying consultant, and Distributor Management System Consultant, my enthusiasm was to improve the system and the management of our government-owned companies doing consumer goods production and distribution. Aside from my specialization in project management, it is one of my affiliates' and my specializations.

We tried to raise the awareness of the respective ministry. We used several channels to reach the objective. I came across my own article in 2013, refreshing my own key message ‘Choose the best way to win both short-term and long-term objectives of your life’ ( Ref.: GLADIATOR OF THE 21st CENTURY https://iwanbintaro.blogspot.com/2013/07/being-gladiator-vs-man-with-heart-we.html?view=flipcard ).

How successful is the effort? We rely on several contacts having access to the respective ministry, especially the minister.

Are we serious about improving the nation’s economy? I would say that improving the system and management of some government-owned companies does have impact on the nation’s economy as a whole.

On top of that, referring to my other article titled “Where do we stand?” (Ref.: https://iwanbintaro.blogspot.com/2024/12/where-do-we-stand.html?view=flipcard ), I believe that it is time for the new administration to move forward taking into consideration the environmental impact of – not only from carbon emission and methane emission – the “excessive and un-managed plastic waste” does have an impact on the acceleration of “climate crisis”

The title of this article applies to both, the effort of achieving the nation’s objective, and my affiliate’s (and my own) objective.

WHERE DO WE STAND?

My Consumer Goods Experience is diverse, I gained knowledge on ERP implementation, Project Management, Consumer Goods Products Supply Chain, and The Distributor Management System.

When I later dug deeper into plastic waste issues and sustainability, it turned out that there are connections between the Consumer Goods Supply Chain and the Plastic Waste problem, and there are ways to reduce or suppress the problem – (Ref.: 1. Now, let us lay down the levels of deelopment we are aiming to achieve:

1. Natural Resources based-economy

2. Value-added Economy – which strives to move from exporting raw materials to exporting downstream products (we call it “Hilirisasi”).

3. Taking into account the Sustainability aspects and Environmental Impacts.

From our Tayangan #95, it was concluded that Thailand, given the facts of switching from Kra Kanal Project to the Land Bridge Project, and that Thailand has the lowest plastic waste pollution in the Chao Phraya River, we concluded that this country is at level-3.

For Indonesia, since the move to level-2 was started during the era of President Joko Widodo, I would suggest that the new administration under President Prabowo Subianto starts to move to level-3 (Taking into account the Sustainability aspects and Environmental Impacts). We are more than happy to support the move to level-3 with the knowledge and experience we have.

SHALL WE CALL IT COMPLACENCY OR NEGLIGENCE?

My most unforgettable experience in project management was during my time in IBM, (Ref.: https://iwanbintaro.blogspot.com/2008/06/cartoon-of-year.html?view=flipcard ). The key learning was (1) there are winning moments, and there are lost in a battle to learn from (2) How my Canadian project advisor used a mindful and tactical way of handling disputes using structured sentences. And that was my first involvement in such a big project.

Currently I have over 25 years of experience in projects, and operations management, plus additional 3,5 years of experience in IT-system consulting. The last consulting experience gave me a unique experience that have driven a combined feeling of pity and anger in me. My love for the country and my frustration triggered me to draw the attention and awareness of high-level government officials about how negligence (or maybe a bit of complacency) is holding our government-owned companies – especially those within the consumer goods industry (in which my affiliate and I is specializing) – from progressing and growing.

There was a specific experience when we were hired as the consultant to review their application system vendor. We did not dig only into the performance of the respective vendor, we reviewed the business process design, the respective government-owned company’s organization, and the vendor selection process - it was incorrect to have the Information Technology (IT) function lead the project. Why? Because these guys do not understand the business process of the commercial function. Such negligence (and unawareness) had hit their competitiveness. Their set of products had recently had the lowest market share.

We did our best, gathered complete information on the market, and had a comprehensive understanding of the whole situation. Yet, we limit our recommendation and proposed solution to the system aspect. It was within the first half of 2023.

I have forgotten about the consulting work for a while because, during the second half of 2023, my activities in sustainability, climate crisis, and the impact of unmanaged plastic waste, brought me to be hired indirectly as the surveying consultant for sustainable packaging. This was a project initiated by the United Nations and funded by the World Bank.

Starting in 2024 – as I already switched my focus to becoming an English-Indonesia (and vice versa) translator – publication about how serious the new administration is in developing our nation, and that includes open inputs and complaints from the people and communities, my affiliate checked and confirmed that our proposed recommendation had not been implemented at all. The respective client continues the dual system practice (Refer to my other article https://iwanbintaro.blogspot.com/2024/11/dms-professor-nandu-nandkishore-dan.html?view=flipcard and read specifically the part “DMS Implementation Best Practice”), and even worse since the developed system is poor in dashboard reporting, they continue deploying a dozens of people to work in excel sheet to be able to provide the reports required by the business. We also find a way to reach and bring awareness of high-level government officials on the overall situation of our government-owned companies, especially the case of our client.

There are Best Practices in Distributor Management System (DMS), a basic understanding of the business itself, the principles of two levels of sales (primary sales and secondary sales), and the best and the most accurate planning should be based on the secondary sales. These are things they don’t teach in any business schools. This knowledge and wisdom are developed from two decades of working in Multinational Consumer Goods Corporation as well as in System Implementations.
