Soft Squares Quilt Complete

I would like to introduce you to my first quilt of 2012 :) - I know it's mid February already but hey time flies and I've been ... occupied. With that sad, I am extremely happy and excited to share my latest quilt - Soft Squares.

The quilt top is a checkered design with prints and solid natural flannel from Robert Kaufman. The quilt back is a beautiful cotton print (Backyard Butterflies from Bernatex).

I absolutely adore the way all the colors play together. It is a very soft and cuddly. I love the simplicity of the design - showing off each fabric. I am also thrilled that the flannel fabric worked so well with the prints. Initially I was planning on using a cotton solid but when the flannel fabric arrived I couldn't resist using it in this quilt :)

This quilt is quilted together using a straight stitching along each seam. It creates a durable and modern feel to this beautiful quilt top. The binding is a matching stripe print that goes so nicely with the quilt top and quilt bottom.

Batting: Warm & Natural 100% cotton

Wow - I Sew??

Seems like FOREVER since I've touched my sewing machine for something other than: mending kids' clothes, sewing napkins and used as a flat surface for random stuff around my craft room. But guess what? I actually used it for a QUILTING project :)

When was the last quilt I worked on? According to my dear blog here, it's been almost ONE MONTH. Yes I know, it's appalling considering that quilting was the main reason why I started this blog in the first place a couple of years ago. A million reasons later, I have not used my sewing machine or posted about quilting in almost a month.

Hopefully this is the post to break that trend. Here's my proof that quilts are being sewed in my sewing room :)

Proof #1 - The beginnings of a couple of Hour Glass quilts

Proof #2 - Binding! Yep that means that some other quilts are almost completed :)

Hopefully this trend could continue and I'll have lots (a LOTS) of sewing and crafting posts to come...and not to mention COMPLETED quilts to share.

Scrappy Christmas Trees - Revisited

Christmas has been very quiet this year around here. Time got away from me and it's now down to the wire for decor, planning and gift shopping. To bring some holiday crafts to the household - I revisited this project from last year - the scrappy Christmas tree :) Here's the tutorial from last year:

These small fabric Christmas trees will add some holiday spirit every space. Here's a quick picture tutorial on how to make these trees for yourself - and of course I turned to my 12 Days of Christmas Moda Charm pack.

Materials (for each tree):

Various sized fabric squares 2" - 5". Need about 4-5 squares
Strip of fabric - 2" x 8"
Straw
Small Play-Doh container - emptied
hot glue gun
some tiny 'ornaments' to decorate the tree with - I used a sparkly paper cut out for the top ornament and some beaded string for the tree.

Get your materials ready and hot glue gun heated
Cut each fabric square into a free form circle - you could make the edges ruffled like pictured or any other decorative edging of your choosing. Cut out 4-5 of this circles - each one a little smaller than the previous.
Starting from the largest fabric circle cutout, hot glue fabric onto the straw. I gather the fabric slightly to make it even around the straw. Leave about 1/3"-1/2" between each piece of fabric.
Trim off the straw on the top of your tree - up against the fabric. Trim off base of the tree - make sure you leave enough straw so that the tree sits nicely in the Play-Doh container.
Put some hot glue on the emptied Play Doh container (I use those tiny Play-Doh containers) and wrap the 2" fabric strips around it. This will be the base of the tree.
Put a bunch of hot glue in the center of the Play-Doh container and stick your tree in - the straw part only not the fabric :).
Decorate your tree however you like.

And voila - your very own mini (fabric) Christmas tree!

Right now these has been in the possession of my 3 year old - yes these trees are very durable ;)

Star on Pink Quilt COMPLETE

I was beginning to think that I would never finish this quilt! Thankfully, some fancy scheduling made this finish a reality. This is my newest quilt - Stars on Pink :) - washed, crinkly and super comfy:

I really love the floral print and green borders. I decided to use both to give more contrast to the otherwise more muted colors of the stars. I love the way it makes the middle of the star...POP.

Weekend Wrapup: Scraps and More Scraps

My scrap pile was getting unruly - so bad in fact I am a little ashamed of even showing it! After hours of organizing and cutting and decision making ... and pure chaos, comes more scrap projects. It does require a bit more work, planning and crossing your fingers - hoping you have enough of a certain fabric to complete the project you have planned in your head.

After a while of planning and organizing I have a (huge) neat pile of scraps for the shop and plenty enough to start my next quilt :). Here's my scraps , cut to size and and for use:
