Personally, I am still trying to figure out how he does it! There are only a few variations on the theme when it comes to what he wears, but I tend to think you can still be creative and have some fun. If you require a Santa of your very own read on to find out how J&O FABRICS can help you.

Here is what you will need that we can help you with:

Red Velvet Upholstery
Use this fabric for Santas coat, pants, hat and bag.

Winter White Long Hair Fur Fabric
This fabric is perfect for trim along the bottom of the pants and arms.
Trim all along the bottom of the coat, up the front and around the collar.
Trim on the brim of the hat. Use as much or as little as you like.

Patent leather Vinyl:Black
Use this for the belt which should be 3-4 inches wide.

Here are the other things you will need:

Pattern
Buckle
Black boots
Hair and beard
Padding
Don't forget the bag of presents!

Instructions:

Find a pattern. If this is something you want to keep and reuse year after year take your time and do a nice job. I would use Red Velvet for the suit and hat. Get suspenders to hold up the pants, it looks more classic, but elastic at the waistband is also needed. The long fur is very luxurious, and all makes all the difference for a spectacular looking costume.

The belt needs to be 3-4 inches wide - make sure you measure after Santa has all of his padding around his belly. You can try to find an old buckle or make one from cardboard, just paint it with a high gloss gold paint. Find some black boots and remember the white gloves.

If you have trouble finding a Santa pattern find an old robe the right size, open the seams and use that as a pattern for the coat. A nice pajama pant pattern will work well for the bottoms.

Here's a little tip from a gal who used to help dress Santa for the Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day Parade: Make up! Do not forget those rosy cheeks. Maybe a bit of glitter too! Remember Santa has been traveling in the cold long night!

Posts by J&O Fabric Store

J&O, Krispy Kreme, and The Culture of America!

The other day I was visiting a friend of mine in Philadelphia, PA. I was staying over by Cottman Ave off of Roosevelt Blvd to be exact. Anyway, it must have been maybe 3:00 or 4:00 in the morning when I heard a loud "BUZZ" like the timer on an oven or alarm clock. The buzzing lasted for about a minute or two before the quiet air of the night resumed. Moments later, I would hear a rustling in the bedroom next to mine as if my friend was awakening for the day. It would not be long before I heard the front door close and his car starting up in the cold early morning hour. As I looked out the window, I could see him driving off down the road in the direction of what appeared to be a storefront with a blinking red light on its roof. As I looked a little longer, I could see that my friend was not the only one gravitating towards this light in the night. It wouldn't take long for me to realize that the buzzing that had awoken me from my slumber, was also coming from this same mysterious building. A dimly lit sign revealed to me that the object of attraction for the line of cars soon accumulating alongside its perimeter was none other than the infamous Krispy Kreme Doughnuts. Upon the return of my friend less than 10 minutes later, it would be revealed that the buzzing I heard was indeed that of an oven timer letting the surrounding community know that the first morning batch of delicious and seemingly addictive Original Glazed signature doughnut treats had just come off the line and were ready to be snatched up by all addicts eager for their "quick fix" that would welcome them into a new day.

I had the pleasure of indulging in one of the dozen or so my friend purchased for his fellow employees on the job that day, and I must say...Vernon Rudolph stumbled onto something really special when he bought the secret recipe and started his own doughnut shop down in North Carolina back in the 1930s. Over 70+ years and millions of doughnuts later, Krispy Kreme is still drawing crowds and giving new meaning to the "Red Light District".

In ode to Krispy Kreme, doughnut shops in general, and addicted Americans everywhere, J&O Fabrics would like to take a moment to salute the coconut sprinkled, jelly filled, chocolate dipped, cinnamon rolled, and yes....original-glazed-eat-with-your-hands-and-lick-your-sticky-fingers-clean doughnuts and their vital contribution towards the culture that makes us Americans!

Posts by J&O Fabric Store

J&O Fabrics "1st Annual Most Amazing Handcrafted Gift Contest!"

With the holiday season already well under way, J&O Fabrics has the perfect solution that will not only save on your pockets during these frugal times, but inspire the artist in all of us to emerge! I am interested in duplicating the look and have seen some "How To" videos on Youtube that seem helpful in getting me started. From your online caricature pic, I figured you also wear some type of head covering and wanted your opinion on the type of fabric best suited for the style. I am looking to start off with probably a versatile color like black or white that I can wear with various outfits, and something that will not slip off too easily. I also need to know how much yardage I should consider buying to create the look I am going for. Not too high, yet not "bandanna" style either. Any assistance you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Signed,

Africa Adorned from Tennessee, USA

Dear Africa Adorned,

Yes, the women of the over 47 countries that make up the beautiful continent of Africa definitely have mastered the art of head dressing! And while many of the styles are used to identify a particular social status, ceremonial occasion, or country of origin, others are reflective of the unique tastes and fashion sense of the individual woman herself.

My general response to your inquiry regarding the type of fabri best suited for a novice such as yourself looking for a more simple African inspired headdress in a versatile solid color is to start out with two-yards of a 45" wide cotton gauze material in an easy to coordinate black or white. Cotton gauze is not only made from nature made and breathable fibers, but it is also lightweight and carries a slight stretch to it that will allow for easy manipulation of the fabric as well as a comfortable fit throughout the day. The recommended 2 yards will offer you some versatility in the height or style of your headdress as you discover the ideal look to complete any formal or informal ensemble. The use of traditional African printed cotton fabric also carries much appeal, especially to those who like patterns and vibrant colors. Though slightly less pliable than gauze, African printed cottons can add just the right touch to any outfit.

cotton gauze fabric

african fabric

novelty cotton fabric

Posts by J&O Fabric Store

Fashion Emergency Kit

How to Prepare for Fashion Emergencies!!

With the Holidays approaching many of us have calendars that are filling up fast with festivities. After we take such care to dress for these special events, no one wants to be unprepared when disaster strikes. Yet we have all been there! Here are a few tips of what you need to have on hand when your clothes attack.

All you need to get started are these eight items: Clear nail polish, glue stick, masking or duct tape, stick-on Velcro, small pair of scissors, small white candle, safety pins and sewing needles with large eyes.

Now you'll be able to fix your most common mishaps or come to the aid of a fellow fashionista.

Stuck zipper- Rub a small amount of candle wax onto the area of the zipper closest to the stuck zipper pull. Work the zipper until you work it free.
Zipper won't stay up- Use a safety pin, loop it though the small opening at the tip of most zipper pulls, and secure the zipper to your waistband. Be sure to attach the pin with the sharpest side facing outward to avoid being pinched.
Loose hem- Use a strip of tape (the heavier the fabric, the stronger the tape) to secure the hem until you have more time to sew it up. If this is an all day affair adhesive backed Velcro is the better choice.
Clothing pulls- Use a small needle with a large eye to thread the pull to the underside of the garment. Secure it with clear nail polish, especially if the length is long. Try to use a smaller needle for finer fabrics.
Run in your pantyhose- Use a small dab of clear nail polish to stop the run from getting larger.

More than one of these kits is a good idea, I like to have one in my car. At work I have been known to use a stapler on a falling hem.

Posts by J&O Fabric Store

Sesame Street Celebrates 40 Years

I did not grow up with Sesame Street, nor did I have children in an era when the show was at the height of it's popularity. But how can any person not be touched as well as enamored by the likes of such endearing characters? I'm talking about the Muppets, my first love was Grover, much later came Elmo. Whoever you call your favorite we have them here at J&O Fabrics.

The show pioneered the changes of format for kids television, and education.
The entire team of creatives continues to keep up and pump out new themes that change with the times. Celebrities still clamor at the opportunity to have a conversation with Cookie Monster or Oscar the Grouch. Now airing in over 140 countries it is the longest-running childrens show in history.

Elmo Lunchtime Fabric

Sesame Street Read and Write Fabric

View all Sesame Street Fabric

Posts by J&O Fabric Store

How to Make Your Own Blanket Wrap with Arms by J&O Fabric Store

With the winter winds slowly starting to blow in, the threat of high heating costs down the line, and a continuing recession still affecting more than half the nation, keeping warm during the cold winter nights while saving money in the process is the order of the day.

So we wrap our boilers and cover our windows, turn the thermo down when we are not at home, and keep it at a maximum of 68 degrees when we are. We monitor our gas stove usage, place draft blockers against doors, and throw on an extra layer of fabric, all in the name of financial preservation.

One such layering phenomenon is the blanket slash robe slash cult fashion called The Snuggie, The Slanket, The Snuglet, The Snuggler, or the Nuddle Blanket to name a few. For some this cold weather friend is nothing more than a robe turned backwards; a must have for idiots promoting laziness and a lack of discipline on financial spending. For others, it is the next best thing to the 'Clap On' light and every other marketed item aimed at the desire for comfort and convenience to the overworked, overstressed, and financially strapped American consumer.

After spending what seemed like hours online viewing and comparing information on these trend setting fleece wraps, this is what I found:

While The Snuggie is by far the most popular and least expensive out of them all (inspiring several fan based sites solely dedicated to the worshiping of this 100% polyester garment, and pricing in at very consumer friendly 2/$19.95), the number of individuals who passionately oppose the "blanket with arms" is just as popular. At one point during my research, I had to stop and laugh at the degree of negative energy being omitted by such a seemingly mundane argument and judgement call on not only the invention, but the purchasing of this and all the other wraps.

Ranking in at #2 on the popularity scale, but far outweighing The Snuggie in color selection and customer satisfaction, was The Slanket. Invented by a college student tired of layering himself up during cold winter nights on campus, and sewn up by none other than his loving mother, The Slanket is about 60" wide and 95" long and uses 100% polyester mircofiber with no piling to create a soft wrap that is not only warm, but stands the test of time through many midnight meanderings and morning after washes. Problem... too much fabric and not enough stuff going around to keep the back and neck as snuggly as the front. Pricing in at $37.99 ea., The Slanket is considered a moderately priced product worth the purchase.

I could not find much on The Snuggler to make an accurate comparison except that it is created by a company called Northwest, has a seamed bottom so that your feet stay warm, come in solids and custom prints, and sells for $29 and up. While the enclosed base seems appealing when snuggled up with a bowl of popcorn in front of a good movie, but heaven forbid you have to rush to the bathroom or get up for any reason, it is almost like running in a potato sack race.

The last blanket wrap is The Nuddle Blanket (nap + cuddle). This super soft double sided and generously warm poly coral fleece fabric also comes with foot pockets like The Snuggler, but has an outer hand pouch and measures 55" wide by 71" long to ensure full shoulder to foot coverage when needed most. But just like The Snuggler, consumers are limited in their movement once in a vertical position. Available in a limited 5 colors and carrying a price tag of $58, The Nuddle caters more to the idealistic than to the practical side of our nature.

With these specs now noted, I found myself even more compelled to save a little money and try my hand at making my own blanket wrap. A seam here, an opening there, and viola, I can transform a 2 yard piece of 60" polar fleece into a warm and cozy Friday night movie companion for less than $20. I could even get creative and use a zebra print faux fur, sheepskin material, or fleece with the name and logos of my favorite NFL team the NY Giants to really make my blanket wrap a permanent body fixture on a cold winter night. With the holidays right around the corner and the football season well under way, what better gift for yourself or a loved one than a custom blanket wrap made by none other than you!

In these economically uncertain times, saving money is the order of the day so why not kill two birds with one stone by making your own blanket wrap. You will not only be saving money and heating expenses, but crafting a really hot gift to last you through time.

Step I

Go to J&O Fabrics and purchase your fabric.

Step II

Click on the link below to view step by step instructions.
http://www.sissonfamily.com/Sewingroom/images/2006projects/thesnuglet.pdf

courtesy of
Welmoed Sisson
welmoed@sissonfamily.com
www.sissonfamily.com/Sewingroom

faux fur fabric
polar fleece fabric

Posts by J&O Fabric Store

Want to Become a Billionaire? Get into fabric!

In financially uncertain times who couldn't use to have a few billion dollars laying around? While past generations of entrepreneurs made their fortunes in oil, railroads, steel and banking, one of today's financial moguls made his billions because of fabric (sort of).

Textiles probably isn't the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the name Warren Buffett. In a sense (we're really reaching) he made his fortune because of textiles. In 1962 Buffett first purchased stock in Berkshire Hathaway. In time he bought enough stock to take a controlling share of the company. By the late 1960s Berkshire Hathaway had expanded into the insurance industry. Under Buffett's guidance Berkshire Hathaway became a conglomerate holding company with investments across many industries. Now, you might find yourself asking: "Pray, what does this have to do with fabric?" (if you talk in an old-timey way).

"What does Warren Buffet have to do with fabric?" "Everything"

Patience... Well the company that is Berkshire Hathaway came into being as three separate companies in the 19th century. In 1839 Oliver Chace established the Valley Falls Company to manufacture textiles. Ninety years later this Valley Falls merged with Berkshire Cotton Manufacturing, founded in 1889. The new company was called Berkshire Fine Spinning Associates.

One year before Berkshire Cotton came into being, the Hathaway Manufacturing Company was founded in 1888. Berkshire and Hathaway merged in 1955 and appeared poised to finish the decade strongly. Within a few years however, seven of the company's locations had been closed accompanied by considerable layoffs.

And that's were Warren Buffett came in. So, with some imagination and an extravagant amount of specious reasoning it can be said that Warren Buffett made his billions in the fabric industry.

So if you are ever tempted to prospect for gold in your cubicle or dig for oil in your cul-de-sac, know that the real money is to be made in fabric. Speaking of money...

Dollar Bills Fabric

Small Fortune Fabric

Just in case you don't have a few billion stashed at home shop with J&O for great prices on your fabrics.

Posts by J&O Fabrics Store

<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://www.jandofabrics.com/newsletters/2009/11/want-to-become-billionaire-get-into.html" title="Want to Become a Billionaire? Each school has its own history, traditions and legends. Part of each school's unique atmosphere is the nickname chosen for its sports teams.

Some universities have almost willfully strange nicknames, such as the Banana Slugs of the University of California-Santa Cruz or the Little Johns of Penn State-Albington. Unique nicknames, however, aren't the exclusive domain of small colleges. Even some of the bigger schools have nicknames that may leave you scratching your head. Here are a few whose fabrics we carry.

Illinois Fighting Illini Fabric: Allover - Navy

Oklahoma Sooners Fabric: Allover - Crimson

Texas A&M Aggies Fabric: Squares

Virginia Tech Hokies Fabric: Squares

Posts by J&O Fabric Store

Fabric That You Can Listen To? One such imaginative concept combining both technology and fashion, is sonic fabric.

Sonic fabric was first introduced to the textile goods industry in the early part of Y2k by a Brooklyn based artist named Alyce Santoro who was inspired by both the use of small strands of cassette tape as wind indicators on sailboats, and by Tibetan prayer flags inscribed with wind activated affirmations and blessings still in use today. The end result, a recyclable material that one can not only wear, but listen to as well! Yes, this unique blend of 50% recycled pre-recorded audio tape and 50% cotton (or polyester) contains multiple strands of sound that when brushed over with a cassette tape head, can actually play music or whatever was captured in the creation process by its designer. When asked how this is even possible, Alyce explained how the tape retains its magnetic quality throughout the weaving / manufacturing process and is therefore able to replay a somewhat scratchy, yet none-the-less, audible version of whatever was recorded onto the tape. Imagine the many ways this concept can be expounded on and marketed, especially in the times we are living in where many consumers are looking for more eco-friendly, holistic, green ways of living. Here's a brief tutorial.

First, I suggest you buy the best scissors you can afford for sewing. If you buy good scissors and follow a few simple rules they will probably last you a lifetime.

The difference between scissors and shears? From what I've read scissors have straight, flat handles and shears have bent handles that form around your fingers. I've also read that shears are for heavier cutting jobs. Scissors show up in your junk drawer, shears show up in the old movies usually in someone's back!

You should be able to find a good pair at your local fabric store. Of course these days you can always go online. When I bought my first good pair I got the same brand the women at the fabric store used. I figured they cut all day long, right? I upgraded a notch when some others were on sale. I own several various pairs, I prefer carbon steel, when the handle and blade is one piece.
This type of steel is strong and stays sharp longer. I own applique scissors, which look like a Pelicans bill, pinking shears for fabrics that tend to fray, several embroidery scissors which are very small and used to cut delicate threads in tight places (I have an Embroidery Machine).
Also in my collection are snippers, and a rotary cutter.

It is essential to have a sharp blade, especially on a rotary cutter, you should not have to go over a cut more than once, if you do it's probably time to change the blade. You will place more stress on your hands and wrists when your blades are dull.

On left-handed scissors: I am left-handed. I grew up using right-handed scissors. If you want scissors for lefties you may need to special order them.

I also own an old pair of electric scissors, they drive me crazy, but that's me.

The following rules should help your scissors last:
Keep them dry and dust free, store them in a closed position, sewing boxes are good.

Use your sewing scissors for fabric only! Keep them under lock and key from the family if need be. I have seen members of my family use scissors for prying large staples from heavy cardboard boxes, cutting plastic boil n' bags, and of course paper.

UNbelievable!!

View our Scissors and Cutting Tools.

Posts by J&O Fabrics Store

What is a UFAC classification?

Among the many acronyms and symbols used in the fabric industry an important one to know about is UFAC, which stands for Upholstered Furniture Action Council. This organization was founded in 1978 as a coalition of fabric manufacturers and retailers to ensure that upholstered furniture was more resistant to ignition from smoldering cigarettes. UFAC does not manufacture any upholstered goods.

There are two UFAC ratings: 1 and 2. UFAC class 1 means that a fabric meets the flammability criteria of the UFAC when in contact with polyurethane foam. UFAC class 2 fabrics are those that do not meet the flammability criteria and must be used in conjunction with a flame retardant material between the fabric and the foam.

Here are some of the UFAC class 1 fabrics carried at J&O:

Celine Upholstery: Ebony

Centric Upholstery: Spa

Posts by J&O Fabric Store

Ask Netfah: Can I Substitute Wool for Gabardine?

Dear Netfah,

My daughter is working on a sewing project in school and her pattern requires her to use 4 yards of a gabardine fabric. But what I want to know, is if a wool or wool blend would do? I have several yards left over from a previous project and it seems like a good substitute.

                                                      Janet, Pennsauken-NJ

Janet,

Your wool fabric would serve as a good substitute for your pattern. Much like gabardine which carries a slight ribbing on one side and in some cases when mixed with other fibers, a slight shine on the opposite; the weave in wool fabric is similar in performance. Both are often used by designers and seamstresses for suits, trousers, skirts and matching jackets. Since gabardine is traditionally made with worsted wool, both materials should be dry cleaned to avoid shrinkage. Make note though that gabardine is also available in polyester blends as well, allowing for ease in laundering and fabric care. Check out some of our wool blend fabric links below for a great selection of wools for the winter months ahead.

flannel/wool blend fabric

solid coating / wool blend fabric

plaid wool/wool blend fabric

solid wool suiting/ wool blend fabric

Posts by J&O Fabrics Store

J&O Fabrics 1st Annual Handcrafted Halloween Costume Contest Day 3....

Day 3...

Medieval wear seems to be the theme for many of our Handmade Halloween Costume entrees, and boy do we have the perfect fabric to make yours #1!

From beautiful brocades, soft princess satins, and modern mid-century prints, to charmeuse, organza and colorful netting, J&O Fabrics has not only the fabric, but the trim to turn a few yards of material into a few dollars in your pocket!

Contest Info: The 1st Annual Most Amazing Hand Crafter Costume Contest entry with the most votes on Facebook by Oct 31st will win a $50 American Express Gift Card.

To Become A Contestant, simply: Become a Fan of J&O Fabrics on Facebook. From impoverished Indian child wives in Bangledesh, to high class European celebrity wives in Hollywood, domestic violence affects men, women, and children across the board on both an intimate and global level as well.

According to a number of counselors, and those running shelters for victims of domestic violence, it seems a weakening economy leads to more incidents of violence against domestic partners. So it is to no surprise that an increase in such cases is being reported across the nation as our countrys lingering recession continues to take its toll on households and individuals alike (especially in our already financially oppressed communities) The added stress and threat from layoffs, foreclosures and general lack of finances is enough to make anyone loose their temper, especially when the right tools and resources are not at their disposal.

Fast Facts from 2008 domestic abuse statistics

1. Women are 84% of spouse abuse victims and 86% of victims of abuse at the hands of a boyfriend or girlfriend.

2. American Indian and Alaskan Native women experience the highest rates of intimate partner violence.

3. Three-fourths of the persons who commit family violence are male.

4. Approximately one in three adolescent girls in the United States is a victim of physical, emotional, or verbal abuse from a dating partner.

5. In a single day in 2008, 16,458 children were living in a domestic violence shelter or transitional housing facility. Another 6,430 children sought services at a non-residential program.

6. Women who have experience domestic violence are 80% more likely to have a stroke, 70% more likely to have heart disease, 60% more likely to have asthma, and 70% more likely to drink more heavily than women who have not experienced intimate partner violence.

7. Modern technology such as the world wide web, have made it EXTRA easy for stalkers, estranged spouses and abusive partners to target and locate their victims.

8. On average more than 3 woman are murdered each day at the hands of their husbands or boyfriends.

9. There were 248,300 rapes/sexual assaults in the United States in 2007, up from 190,600 in 2005. That is an average of 500 rapes / sexual assaults on women per day in this country alone.

10. The United Nations Development Fund for Women estimates that at least one of every three women globally will be beaten, raped, or otherwise abused during their lifetime. In most cases, the abuser is a member of her own family.

In honor of all our mothers, sisters and daughters who have fallen victim at the hands of their abusers, are serving time for defending themselves from their abusers, or who are fighting as we speak to free themselves from the same ones who claim to love them for better or worse, J&O Fabrics offers a selection of purple fabric to make symbolic purple ribbons, purple garments, purple crafts, anything purple.... for the cause.

Purple Broadcloth

Purple Satin

Assorted Purple Fabric

References:
http://www.ndvh.org/

http://www.domesticviolence.org/

http://www.dvrc-or.org/domestic/violence/resources/C61/

Posts by J&O Fabrics Store

J&O "1st Annual Handcrafted Halloween Costume Contest"...5 Days Left

Day 5:

Well, we've seen it all!

First a Royal family from Medieval times, then a mini dinosaur, and now a pooch on the moon. The 1950 Series matchup came about in dramatic fashion as the Phillies' "Whiz Kids" team won the National League pennant on the last day of the season. The 1950 World Series was all about pitching as the Yankees' rotation proved too much for the Phillies' young lineup. The Yankees staff was one of only five in World Series history to have a collective ERA of under 1.00. Despite the formidable pitching of the Phillies' staff the Yankees won in a four game sweep. Among the futur Hall of Famers playing in the Series, the Yankees had Joe Dimaggio, Yogi Berra, Phil Rizzuto, Whitey Ford and Johnny Mize, while the Phillies had Robin Roberts and Richie Ashburn.

Fast forward to 2009 and the Phillies and Yankees are about to go head to head once more. The setup for this Series is less dramatic but perhaps more intriguing. As in 1950, each team is anchored by a strong pitching staff, although this Series seems destined to be higher scoring. In order to get to this point each team had to overcome a number of obstacles over the course of the season.

The Phillies and Yankees were affected by steroid controversies. In the Phillies case, relief pitcher J.C. Romero was suspended for 50 games for violating the leagues banned substances policy. While Romero was an important part of the Phillies World Series-winning pitching staff, he never regained his rythm after returning from the suspension and was left off the post season roster along with Phillies' stalwart Brett Myers.

The Yankees' season also began with the revelation that three-time MVP Alex Rodriguez had tested positive for banned substances a few seasons before.

By the time the playoffs began each team seemed to be hitting its groove. The Phillies dispatched the Colorado Rockies and the Los Angeles Dodgers, while the Yankees did the same to the Minnesota Twins and the ridiculously named Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Now, almost 60 years later the Phillies and Yankees meet in the 2009 World Series which begins Wednesday, October 28. Be ready for what promises to be an exciting World Series with J&O's incredible polar fleece fabrics. Whether you are talking about health remedies, lifestyle practices, fashion, or even fabric. And with go-green and eco-friendly practices on the rise by mainstream consumers from Cali to NYC, more and more designers and textile industries are jumping on the bandwagon and taking it back to the basics with the use of natural fiber alternatives. As they do so, consumers gain more insight into just how far behind western culture is in comparison to the rest of the world in terms of sustainable living.

Noticeable as well are the differences seen in authentic hand weaved materials and machine manufactured ones. In the attempt to maximize production and corner the market, westerners and overly ambitious manufacturers have tried to replicate natural fiber texturizing techniques using various mechanical devices in order to ensure faster processing, bigger volume, and lower costs. The result, a product of inferior quality and substance.

One such plant whose fibers have been cultivated, sustained and hand woven in the plush tropical province of Aklan, Philippines for centuries, is the Pina cloth. Not only natural, it is a great eco-friendly textile source. Pina cloth starts with fragile hairlike fiber strands from the leaves of pineapples that are then woven into unique high quality cloth of intricate designs and sold to not only international textile and design mills, but to the high society in the Philippines Islands as well.

From sophisticated hand weaving techniques like "ringgue" (lattice affect) and "saeanigo" (twill weave), to specialty hand embroidery like "sombra" or flower designs which have become a dying skill, these lost techniques are seeing a revival through modernized replications done in manufacturing plants and made into wearable textiles for mainstream consumers.

Traditionally used in high-end garments like wedding gowns, the finer than hair yet stiff fibers carry their own natural sheen, are easy to wash, and don't require dry cleaning. Talk about eco-friendly. Pina cloth has also earned a niche as one of the worlds finest traditional crafts comparable only to China silk, Belgium lace, and Italian leather. More recently, a mixture of silk and pinya (the so called 'pinya-seda') has also been produced, making the humble beginnings of the pineapple seem like a Cinderella story.

Natural Bamboo

Organic Kona Cotton

Organic Sea-Tiva / Seacell

References:

http://www.heritagearts-craft.com/start.htm

http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=29052297

Posts by J&O Fabrics Store

<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://www.jandofabrics.com/newsletters/2009/10/love-eating-pineapples-but-wearing-them.html" title="Love Eating Pineapples, But Wearing Them? Last nigth we witnessed one when our hometown Philadelphia Phillies staged a dramatic rally in the bottom of the 9th inning to steal a victory from the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Early in the game the Phillies struck first, taking a 2-0 lead into the 4th inning. Between the 4th and 6th innings the Dodgers took the lead 4-2. The Phillies scored once more in the 6th to get within striking distance. Then the 9th inning happened. With one out pinch-hitter Matt Stairs was walked followed by Carlos Ruiz getting hit by a pitch. After the following batter was retired Jimmy Rollins stepped into the batter's box with two outs. On the third pitch of the at-bat, Rollins made contact with a fastball for a double, driving in the tying and winning runs to pull out the win for the Phillies. The team now has a commanding 3-1 lead in the series and needs one more victory to secure a second straight trip to the World Series.

With the Phillies' success on the field comes demand for our Philadelphia Phillies Fleece fabric. Dedicated to doing manual work as a form of adoration to God, these men can be seen handling security during pilgrimages to Touba or even roaming the streets in search of financial donations for their religious teacher.

Much like modern day quilts, the fabrics used in their patch worked tunics and bottoms each have their own distinct design and story to tell, making the finished product not only a discussion piece, but a truly unique creation all its own.

Patchwork fabric

Novelty Cotton fabric

African fabric.

Posts by J&O Fabric Store

NFL Players Play Pretty in Pink All For the Cause!

Whether it was the Eagles defense....or lack of it, the numerous Raiders sacks, or the multiple injuries along the way to the 9-13 Eagles loss last night against the Oakland Raiders is not what is most important as I sit here behind my monitor formulating my blog for the day. The real issue for me as I review post game footage of these big strong football players tackling and pounding one another in true grit fashion, is that several of them are doing so in in pretty pink cleats and gloves. And it does not stop there. As I look onto the sidelines, another player is sporting a pink quarterback towel in his pocket while the man shouting out the plays in a pink cap that matches his pink patch on his jacket. If I didnt know better, I would think the long awaited and highly anticipated "coming out" party had finally begun. Nevertheless, I was mistaken. What was unfolding before my eyes in fact, was the NFLs efforts to support the National Breast Cancer Foundation and help raise awareness to this often times curable yet deadly disease affecting millions of women worldwide, as well as within the NFL family itself.

Until the end of October, NFL games will be continue to be designated as NFL Breast Cancer Awareness games, as teams designate home games in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and plan special in-stadium or pregame events with local organizations. Just check your local Breast Cancer Foundation or NFL site for listings.

Breast Cancer is the second most common cancer among women in the United States. Help reduce the risks for our mothers, daughters, friends, wives, lovers and most especially yourself with these simple preventive steps. After all, isnt welcoming in another birthday in health and happiness worth it!

1. Balance your emotions. Love yourself.

As women, we are taught to take care of everyone first, ourselves last. Give yourself permiss-

ion to nurture yourself as much, if not more . Your breasts will thank you for it.

2. Drink plenty of water.

Water is the best thing you can give your body to restore and replenish lost fluids from poor

diets, polluted environments, and stress. So drink up!

3. Exercise, exercise, exercise!

The best way to keep the toxins from stress and and American lifestyle from destroying our

health is to work it out. Move your body, dance your body, play your body away and release

all those harmful chemicals from within. Your beautiful vessel will thank you for it!

4. Get your mammograms, ultrasounds, or alternative breast exams each year

once you reach 40. Sure they may be a little uncomfortable and seemingly inconvenient, but

like mama used to say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!

5. Laugh, laugh, laugh!

Because of the chemicals released when we laugh, it really is the best medicine for a stressful

life. So laugh, and let your whole body celebrate along with you!

NFL fabric

Philadelphia Eagles fabric

Oakland Raiders fabric

Breast Cancer fabric

Posts by J&O Fabrics Store

1st Annual Most Amazing Hand Crafted Costume Contest at J&O Fabric Store.

<img style="WIDTH: 400px;
