Their performance was enchanting and kept us all engaged as their flutes bantered back and forth.  They gave us some insights into the history of flutes, the various woods that are used to craft the instruments, how the tones can be changed and mastered and how the instruments have been used to communicate as well as used for pleasure and relaxation.

It was a very fun time.

It was with great pleasure and surprise we received these wonderful postcards, thanking us for our work with Arthur’s Memory Cafes.  All our wonderful members at Arthur’s Memory Cafe (previously known as J. Arthur’s Memory Cafe), our founding partners: Arthur’s Residential Care, ACR Healthcare Group, The Alzheimer’s Research Center, Health Partners, Alzheimer’s Speaks and The Minnesota Memory Project have all been involved in the development and expansion of the Memory Cafes.

We believe it is was the wonderful article Gail Rosenblum from the Star Tribune, did on Arthur’s Memory Cafe which triggered these postcards.  If you haven’t read the article we encourage you to do so now.  Gail captured the essence of our group and how beneficial these gatherings are.  In fact, the response to the article was so great, we had 16 new people attend our very next meeting and now have two groups!   Our new members averaged a drive of 45-60 minutes one way, which shows you the need of these gatherings.

Maybe, just maybe you will you will be inspired to start a gratitude initiative like Postcards Underground and make someones day; or if you would like information on how to start up your own Memory Cafe we would be glad to assist you!

for Engaging Those with Dementia

We had a wonderful gift given to us at Arthur’s Memory Cafe.  Psychologist, Jeanne Bearmon has spent a life time developing and collecting questions to engage those with dementia.

After reading the article in the Star Tribune in January about our Memory Cafe Jeanne contacted us and wanted to share her book of questions with us.  Jeanne has asked that we make them available to anyone who would like them.  Facilitators may have to tweak questions to meet with individual members needs but there is reservoir if topics to discuss.

Please keep in mind there are all types of questions for people with Dementia in various stages of the disease and their caregivers in the booklet.  These questions are to be used as ideas and facilitators will need to evaluate the complexity of the question posed per person.  For people further along in the disease, less complex questions are necessary to use. Also you want to pose all questions so there is no wrong answer.  This way it is not a test of memory but rather an expression of their thoughts.

A big thank you goes to Gail for taking the time to visit our Memory Café and really capturing the essence of our group.  Her article touched many. In fact, we had people who drove an hour one way just to find this type of support, and several others  who drove 30-45 minutes!

Yesterday’s meeting started with everyone together, allowing those who were new to hear the original members share why they like this type of social support group.  Repeatedly, members mentioned the ability to build friendships and have fun.  All highlighted how nice it was to be able to focus on their relationships as a couple or family, without focusing on the disease.

The original Memory Café group now has 14-20 participants on a regular basis and the new group has 14 participants already. The original group feels a sense of pride in helping others find this wonderful support group for people who are experiencing memory loss.  The only complaint we hear is that members would love to be able to meet every week!

Going forward J. Arthur’s Memory Café will be referred to as “Arthur’s Memory Café,” after the host and sponsor Arthur’s Residential Care.  We meet on the 2^nd and 4^th Wednesday of each month at J. Arthur’s Coffee Shop at 2441 Rice Street, in Roseville, Minnesota.
