June 4, 2013

A 21-year-old woman and 21-year-old man from Arkansas were killed as the result of an Oklahoma Boat Accident that occurred last month. Investigators have determined that alcohol was a contributing factor to the crash.

According to an article from 9 News, the boat that crashed was on the waters of Grand Lake on May 14 with a total of nine people aboard. While on the water, the boat’s operator admitted to authorities that he consumed ten beers and a shot of tequila, and had taken an anti-depressant for which he did not have a prescription. He also admitted to smoking marijuana two days prior to the accident.

As the operator was driving the boat, he collided with the side of an unoccupied, docked houseboat, killing two of the passengers aboard his vessel and injuring several others, himself included.

Authorities have charged the driver of the watercraft with operating a vessel under the influence and could face further charges pending the outcome of a full investigation into the incident.

The crash highlights the risks involved with drinking and boating. Many fail to recognize that the behavior is just as dangerous as drinking and driving a car.

This is why the Tulsa Personal Injury Lawyers with J. Colbert Injury Lawyers urge those who are at the helm of a watercraft to never consume alcohol while on the water.

An Oklahoma Boat Accident has left one man dead and another man missing.

June 19, 2012

An Oklahoma Boat Accident has left one man dead and another man missing. According to reports from KOCO News, the accident occurred Monday night on Kaw Lake, just east of Ponca City, Oklahoma.

Local law enforcement stated that the driver of the boat told them that he and two other men had ventured out on the lake to run some fishing lines, when the boat began taking on water quickly. They tried to reach shore, but overturned several hundred yards from land.

The boat’s operator was able to pull one of the passengers to shore, but he was declared dead shortly after the rescue. The other passenger is still missing, and search teams will continue to scour the lake..

The United States Coast Guard claims that nearly 1,000 people die each year as a result of boating accidents in the United States and as many as 2,500 are injured. Additionally, they estimate that more than 30,000 non-fatal boating accidents go unreported each yea. In nearly one-quarter of these accidents, drugs and/or alcohol were considered contributing factors.

This is why the Oklahoma Personal Injury Lawyers with J. Colbert Injury Lawyers say that it is so important to always have enough personal floatation devices, such as life preservers, for each passenger aboard the boat. It is also a good idea to have an emergency first aid kit and a radio to call for help in the event of an emergency.

Due to their height and narrow wheelbase, sport utility vehicles are prone to rollover accidents that can result in devastating injury or death.

June 12, 2012

Due to their height and narrow wheelbase, sport utility vehicles are prone to rollover accidents that can result in devastating injury or death. According to an article released by News Channel 4, two Oklahoma citizens learned this lesson the hard way when their vehicle crashed Tuesday on the outskirts of Oklahoma City.

Reports from the Oklahoma City Police Department, who responded to the scene, show that the accident happened at around 12:30 a.m., near the Kilpatrick off-ramp on I-35. Authorities believe that the driver was heading down I-35 when he made a last second decision to veer off onto Kilpatrick. This quick jerking motion caused the vehicle to fishtail before eventually rolling onto its side.

Both passengers inside the SUV at the time of the crash suffered injuries and were transported to a local hospital to receive treatment.

Reports from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently detailed studies that showed that while carrying several passengers can make a lower-riding sedan even more stable, a higher-riding sport utility vehicle becomes even more unstable with extra people. A vehicle’s stability can be influenced by many factors, such as height, the width between tires, the design of its suspension system, tire grip, and even the location of the engine mount.

The Oklahoma Personal Injury Lawyers with J. Colbert Injury Lawyers say that it is important for SUV drivers to remember to slow down, especially around curves, to avoid being involved in an Oklahoma Auto Accident.

June 5, 2012

The death of a 22-year-old senior at the University of Oklahoma has been ruled accidental by the state’s medical examiner. According to reports from News On 6, the accident happened near Evans Hall on the university’s campus just before 3 a.m.

The victim’s best friend stated that she had been drinking at a bar near campus when she decided to climb onto the roof at Evans Hall. The victim had just graduated and was seeking a second degree from the University. Her friend stated that climbing onto the roof of Evans Hall is “like a rite of passage” for graduating seniors.

Upon climbing onto the roof, the victim made a phone call to a friend moments before the accident happened. It is believed that the victim may have thought she heard police officers arriving at the scene and decided to attempt fleeing the roof by climbing down a fire escape. The girl then slipped and fell.

Rescue crews were called to the scene, but they were unable to revive the girl. The medical examiner ruled that the victim died due to blunt force trauma to the body and head resulting from the accident.

The Oklahoma Personal Injury Attorneys with J. Colbert Injury Lawyers know how difficult the Wrongful Death of a loved one can be. The firm would like to send their deepest sympathies and condolences to the family of the victim who tragically died in this accident.

May 29, 2012

For many Oklahomans, Memorial Day weekend is an opportunity to enjoy outdoor water activities, but the sheer number of boaters often can lead to accidents.

This was the case Monday when, according to KOCO News, a 14-year-old Oklahoma teen was struck and injured by a boat on Arcadia Lake.

Reports indicate that the teen was being towed on an inner tube behind a boat owned by a family member. The boy was tossed off the tube and into the water, prompting the boat to circle back; however, the boat accidentally struck the boy in the process.

The teen suffered serious injuries and had to be airlifted to a local hospital for treatment. He remains there in serious condition after being upgraded from critical condition earlier today.

Earlier in the weekend, a 27-year-old man drowned on Lake Thunderbird. Police say that the accident occurred this past Saturday around 3:30 p.m. when friends noticed the man had gone missing while he was swimming. They searched for around an hour before calling for help, and the body of the victim was discovered around 6:30 p.m.

The Oklahoma Personal Injury Attorneys with J. Colbert Injury Lawyers say that the best way to avoid an Oklahoma Boat Accident is to wear a life preserver at all times when you’re on the water. Also, only swim in designated areas on bodies of water where motorized boats aren’t allowed.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning to patients taking the Type II diabetes drug, Actos®, about the increased risk of bladder cancer. A five-year study by the drug’s manufacturer, Takeda Pharmaceuticals, showed an increase in the risk of the cancer in patients who had taken the drug.

The research looked at 193,000 Type-II diabetes patients who were taking the drug for an average of two-years. Researchers stated that, “Compared to never being exposed to pioglitazone (Actos®), pioglitazone therapy lasting more than 12 months was associated with a 40 percent increase in risk for bladder cancer.”

Since the results of the study were made public, Actos has been pulled from European markets in Germany and France, and the FDA has warned doctors to refrain from starting new patients on the drug if they already have bladder cancer. Also, they are being told to use caution when prescribing the drug to patients who have been afflicted with bladder cancer in the past.

With no drug currently on the market to replace Actos®, doctors are being selective on who they prescribe the medication to and are choosing patients who have the highest insulin resistance.

An Actos® Drug Injury is a serious risk when beginning a regimen of this medication. That is why the Oklahoma Personal Injury Attorneys with J.

May 17, 2012

A joyride in Oklahoma City ended badly on Tuesday afternoon when the 16-year-old driver plowed into a pastor’s home.

Two other teenagers were also inside the pickup truck, as was a six-month-old infant they’d taken along for the ride, reports News9.com.

A witness has said she saw the truck doing donuts in a church parking lot just prior to the driver losing control of the vehicle and running into the church pastor’s home at 116 S.W. 57th Street. No one was home at the time.

The teenagers fled the crash site immediately after the accident, one holding the baby. Police located all three and found the baby in good condition. They say the driver faces several charges. He was not licensed to drive.

The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced yesterday that the number of fatal highway accidents has dropped to a 60-year low.

May 8, 2012

The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced yesterday that the number of fatal highway accidents has dropped to a 60-year low. According to CBS News, there was a 1.6 percent decrease in the total number of deaths last year, dropping to approximately 32,000 deaths per year.

The agency applauded new and cheaper safety technology being made available for a wider range of vehicles. In fact, the announcement of the lower fatality rates came on the heels of Hyundai announcing its plans for all new vehicles to have brake override technology installed. This device prevents the vehicle from accelerating if the brake and gas pedals are being applied at the same time. The NHTSA is presently working to make this technology mandatory on all vehicles after Toyota recalled hundreds of thousands of cars and trucks due to faulty accelerators.

Other safety features to recently hit the market include:

rearview cameras,

lane departure warning systems,

forward collision warning systems,

and adaptive headlights.

A study by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety estimates that if all passenger vehicles were equipped with these devices, one in three fatal collisions could be avoided.

Oklahoma Auto Accidents can be physically, emotionally, and financially devastating to each individual involved, especially if the accident wasn’t your fault. That’s why the Oklahoma Personal Injury Attorneys with J. Colbert Injury Lawyers ask that motorists always buckle up, slow down, and drive defensively at all times.

A recent study has shown that colon cleansing procedures may be more dangerous than beneficial.

May 1, 2012

There are many people who believe colon cleansing procedures are the key to better overall health, preventing cancer and providing a number of health benefits to a patient, including:

removing bodily toxins,

promoting growth of healthy intestinal bacteria,

boosting energy,

and enhancing you immune system.

However, a recent study has shown that the procedure may be more dangerous than beneficial.

According to Oklahoma’s 9 News, research from Georgetown University has shown the procedure offers no health benefits and can be very dangerous. The results, which were published in The Journal of Family Practice, concluded that the procedure resulted in patients suffering a number of side effects ranging from cramping to kidney failure.

In other cases, more serious side effects were reported and include:

colon and/or rectal perforation,

sepsis,

and death.

Many of these injuries can leave patients requiring the use of a colostomy bag for the rest of their lives.

Despite the dangers of this procedure, experts say that poorly trained individuals are still conducting the procedures, as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has no authority to oversee the products used.

The Oklahoma Medical Malpractice Attorneys with J. Colbert Injury Lawyers hope that understanding and educating the public about Colon Cleansing Dangers will help to persuade people that colon cleansing is an unnecessary procedure that they should stay away from. If you know someone who is considering the procedure, ask them to consider otherwise.

An oil rig worker in Oklahoma City died Monday night after a large piece of piping fell on top of him.

April 24, 2012

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say that while oil and gas extrication is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States today, the nature of the job also makes it one of the most dangerous industries to work in. Over a three-year period, 404 oil and gas workers died in occupational accidents, and the number continues to grow.

Take, for instance, the case of an Oklahoma City oil rig worker who died in an accident Monday night. Reports from KOCO News indicate that the incident occurred at approximately 10:45 p.m. on Southeast 59th Street.

Officers who responded to the scene say that the worker was standing underneath the rig’s hydraulic line when it broke and a large piece of pipe came free. It fell on top of him and the worker was pinned beneath the pipe. Luckily, several co-workers witnessed the accident and were able to lift the hunk of metal and free the man. The victim’s heart had stopped, and although a co-worker attempted in vain to revive the man, a medical examiner declared him dead at the scene.

The Department of Health and Safety says it will continue to investigate the accident to determine its cause.

Colbert Injury Lawyers would like to send their thoughts and condolences to the family of the man who was tragically killed in this horrible accident.
