The BCS meetings ended with some of college football’s biggest power brokers hyping themselves for committing to a long awaited playoff. BCS executive director Bill Hancock called it a “seismic change” for the sport.

You can go ahead and stop patting yourselves on the back for something you should have done a long time ago. Hopefully now, you’ll decide your national champion on the field of play, just like everyone else does. By the way, they’re not there yet. They have committed to a four team playoff, but still have to decide how to pick those four teams, where they play the games and how they split up all the new dough. I’ll believe it when I see it.

In the meantime, stop giving yourselves credit for something you still haven’t done, that should have been done years ago.

John L. Smith…come on down! You’re the next head coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks! Smith goes from Weber St. to Fayetteville…from the Big Sky to the SEC…from battling Montana to knocking heads with Alabama.

And I think it’s a great hire. They’re not trying to win the press conference; they’re trying to win a National Championship. And the best way to do that, is to maintain continuity. He spent the last two years there as an assistant, so they know him and he knows them. Plus, they don’t need to worry that he’ll be spending his days chasing skirt, laying his hog down and then lying about it. They take their shot at the National Title and then take a big swing for a big name once the season is over. No brainer and another great call by A.D. Jeff Long.

And his physical relationship with Dorrell apparently started while they were eating lunch in a car and she asked him, “Are you going to kiss me?” Am I going to kiss you? Yes, I’m going to kiss you. Then I’m going to pay you. Then hire you. Then wreck my hog. And both of our lives.

Bobby Petrino’s former mistress Jessica Dorrell has resigned from her position with the Arkansas football program.

My question is, exactly what does she tell a future employer when they ask why she left her last job? A funny story, actually. I went out with, and was subsequently hired by this really famous guy, who was married with four kids; and he rolled his hog with me on the back, and lied to everyone by saying I wasn’t with him when it happened. Then all hell broke loose, he was fired, my fiancé left me, the school chipped me off $14 grrr so I quit.

Oh and my greatest weakness is I work too hard and I care too much. When can I start.

In the era of cell phone cams, there’s nothing that ever happens, that doesn’t end up getting captured on video. That’s why I have to think someone, somewhere has video of Alabama’s 2012 BCS Trophy getting shattered when a player’s father tripped on a rug and knocked the crystal off its podium. Uh oh!

Verrry clutch pops. It took nearly 100 guys all getting on the same page to win it. But just one clumsy dad to smash it.

If you think the ol ball coach is feeling good about himself after an 11 win season for South Carolina, you’d be wrong. Steve Spurrier feels amazing about himself. How else would you explain him lighting up all those SEC suckas he has to knock heads with every year. Asked about moving the Georgia game from the second week of the season to the sixth, he admitted he was disappointed because “you could always count on them having 2 or 3 key players suspended.” Bam! Whatever, the OBC was on a roll and no one is the SEC is safe. Have anything for coach Nutt? Or coach Dooley. How about the Chiz. How did he not smoke Bobby Petrino? Never mind college football, the whole planet is better when the OBC is feeling it.

Bobby Petrino has always put huge numbers up: 44 points on South Carolina. He hung 49 on Tennessee. And 4,300 text messages with his mistress over a 7 month period. 70 a day! 80 some days. Do I hear 90?? You know it. If someone is firing off 90 texts a day, they’re usually about cute boys and the Hunger Games, because they’re getting thumbed out by 14 year old girls. Coach P got nice in the SEC, but he’s the Bear Bryant of the SMS. And he did it all with a company cell phone on company time.

I thought after running through all those Perkins waitresses and porn stars that Tiger Woods taught every cheating public figure to get a burner. Petrino obviously didn’t get the memo. Not if he was texting his side piece on game days, like he did 70 times the day the Razorbacks rolled Troy. And let’s be real: if you’re knocking out 90 a day, at some point, those texts have to turn into sexts right? Good coach, bad guy. Good playcaller, terrible playa.

I had no reason to believe Arkansas AD Jeff Long would do the right thing and break off Bobby Petrino. Leaders in his position rarely do. Instead, they typically give in to the out of control coach, maniacal fan base and compromise their integrity to keep revenue streams flowing. But Long didn’t. And firing Petrino was brass. And make no mistake, Hog fan, he had to go. He violated University policy, abused his position, and lied to his boss, the media and the public: good coach, bad guy. And he’s getting exactly what he deserves. And as he tries to make it right with family and salvage what’s left of his career, let me once again introduce to you, the unbeaten, untied, undisputed Heavyweight Champion of the World…. Sex! It’s ruined more careers and brought down more titans than anything in the history of the world.

That said, a number of you Hog fans still don’t get it. You really don’t care what Petrino did, how many lies he told or how bad a guy he is. All you care about is the fact that he resurrected your program, won the Cotton Bowl last year and has you in position to challenge for a national title next season. And if it doesn’t happen, you’ll be coming for the A.D., next. Which is completely jacked up. Long’s not the bad guy here, Petrino is. Long isn’t the one who laid that Hog down, lied about it, brought shame to that program, and violated University policy, Petrino did. Long may have pulled the trigger, but it’s because Petrino left him no choice. You’re barking up the wrong tree. The A.D. didn’t put you in this position, his lying backstabbing coach did. Don’t get it twisted.

One of the biggest reasons Ohio St. hired Urban Meyer was to make people forget greasy Jim Tressel. The vest was never what he appeared, but in Meyer they were getting an ethical, moral coach who does it the right way. Someone who left Florida because he “didn’t like the state of college football” and who thought the Florida program was “broken.” Come to find out, now, Urb may be every bit the hypocrite the vest was. And if you believe a Sporting News investigation into his final months at Florida, what you see, is not what you get with Urb. And the reason the program was broken when he left is because he broke it.

The Sporting News paints a picture of the inmates running the asylum. The report alleges Percy Harvin once quit during a conditioning drill telling coaches, “This bleep ends now.” It also alleges that he threw his wide receiver coach Billy Gonzales to the ground, but wasn’t punished for it. If assaulting a coach won’t get you punished what will? Apparently not getting high: because the report also alleges that Harvin, Aaron Hernandez and Brandon Spikes were suspended for failed drug tests, but that Urb covered them by saying they were out with ankle injuries. And perhaps richest of all, is Urb telling an Ohio St. recruit he wouldn’t send his own kid to Florida because of concerns in the Gator locker room. The same locker room that he ran and stocked, before bouncing after he lost control of it. Question then is, if you can’t believe in the vest and you can’t believe in Urb, who can you believe in? Because none of these guys are what they appear.

There you go again Baylor. Just last week, I was giving you credit for being the center of the sporting universe. And owning up to the fact that I cracked on you, telling you to stay in your own lane while your conference realigned. And yes, I did say you had a Big 12 lifestyle with a Conference USA resume. And no sooner than I said it, you went right out and killed it with a Heisman Trophy, a National Championship for the womens’ basketball team and an Elite 8 run for the men. So I owned it. And sat right here, ate my crow and gave you the love you had earned.

But no sooner than I did that ESPN reported that both the men and womens’ basketball programs sent hundreds of impermissible texts and made hundreds of impermissible calls. As always if you’re not cheating, you’re not trying and it’s only cheating if you get caught. And apparently you were. So go ahead and expect the NCAA to come in and smash you again. You have my apology Baylor fan, now I’m waiting on yours.

Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino is at it again. If he’s not quitting on his team in the middle of the night (via letter), he’s running around on his wife with a subordinate half his age, laying his Harley down in the street and lying about it.

Question, will the school activate the morals clause in his deal and whack him, like they did coach Nutt back in 2007. Doubtful. Unlike coach Nutt, Petrino’s rolling people up and should be a preseason top ten next year. Still I’ve never seen a guy more determined to commit career suicide than Petrino, who left half his face and all of his cred on that pavement.

And I can’t believe I’m about to say this but…the center of the sports world is Central Texas. Yeah I said it. And I said it because Baylor U is killing it. And yes, I was the guy who had to remind Baylor that they were Baylor when they were whining about conference realignment. And that if they didn’t like it, they could just go to the WAC where they belonged. Well, not only do they belong in the Big 12, they’re running the Big 12. An undefeated run to the National Championship for the ladies, a Heisman Trophy for RG III and an Elite 8 run for the men’s team. Arkansas head coach Bobby Petrino showed up for his first press conference after laying down his Harley Davidson looking like a Freddy Krueger Hannibal Lecter hybrid. Dude suffered a cracked vertebra, and four fractured ribs. He’s lucky to still be breathing. Hey Bob, just because you coach the Hogs, doesn’t mean you have to ride one. Especially without a helmet. He says the only reason he didn’t wear one was because it was too hot and it didn’t look good. Right. Trust me; the dorkiest helmet on the planet is still way better than the coolest neck brace.

Get well, coach. And then do the same thing to that Harley that you did to the Atlanta Falcons: abandon it.

Take: Joe Paterno Dies At 85

Joe Paterno passed away Sunday from lung cancer, just two months after being fired by Penn St. And no sooner did the news break, so did the near impossible task of making sense of his legacy. Should he be remembered as the sport’s all time winningest coach, a great man and philanthropist? Or as the man who presided over the worst college football scandal ever, and who despite having the opportunity, didn’t do more to prevent it? Of course, the answer is both. Both pro and con are fighting for Paterno to be remembered a certain way, but you can’t have one without the other. Paterno was an icon. He won 409 games, coached generations of players and put not just that football program but that University on the map. He was a great man. But a great man, with obvious flaws. Make no mistake, while Jerry Sandusky is the monster here, Paterno could have and should have done more to stop him. Period. He said as much himself. And by not doing so, who knows how many more lives Sandusky went on to ruin. So to the question is, whether the last two months taint the 61 years that came before them; the answer is yes.

In fact, it begs the question, does the good still outweigh the bad. If it were any other typical college football scandal, it would be an easy question to answer. But since we’re talking about one of the most heinous crimes imaginable: sex crimes against children, there is no easy answer. Fact is, it’s a mixed legacy.

Paterno was a great man, who did plenty of good. But in one of the most defining moments of his life, the man known for his ethics and morals did not practice what he preached. And 61 years of good isn’t going to erase that. Nor should it.

Alabama DB Dre Kirkpatrick announced last week that he'll be entering the NFL Draft. He has great size, crazy ball skills, and coming off that shut-out of LSU in the BCS Title game... His draft stock couldn't be higher. And neither could he. Allegedly.

Dre possesses explosive athletic ability, but apparently not expansive decision making ability. Because the only thing he was in possession of early Tuesday morning was the GANJ. He was arrested at the scene in Florida, and I haven't had a take on a Dre and the Chronic since the early 90s when the good Doctor was going multiplatinum with it. And it's easy to say- what's the big deal, he's a college kid mixing it up with a bag of salad, whatever. But, he's not just a college kid. He's a future Top 10 pick. It isn't like this is the Social Chair at Sigep who got busted burning a blunt by campus police. It's a guy who's three months away from being a multimillionaire.

In his position- it's simple. There are just two things you have to do: Work out. Don't get arrested. It's that easy. But apparently not easy enough for Dre. I know that campus life can be boring after football. But it's not boring enough to bake. My man, play some video games. Go on a date. Join intramurals. Do anything to pass the time and not raise questions about your maturity, or your sobriety. Hit the weights, hit the books.... But between now and draft day... Don't hit the fatty. (And don’t hate me. Thank me). You're welcome.

This just in. The OBC still rules. Nothing has stood the test of time like Steve Spurrier. This cat is still the absolute best. As an example, like any other top coach, he knows he’s only as good as the assistants he hires. And only the best of the best get to work for the OBC. And he has a very specific and scientific criteria for selecting those assistants.

First, he doesn’t hire smokers. Why? I’ll just let the OBC answer that one himself: "Because it’s stupid. Smoking is stupid." Right?! Is there anyone, anywhere who doesn’t have a heater in their mouth, who doesn’t agree with that?. Smoking is stupid. And filthy and nasty as well. I see him working: how can you demand discipline and accountability from the players if you have none yourself.?

Everything in my head is telling me to go with Alabama Monday night in the BCS title game against LSU. I mean, no one is beating Bama twice in one year. And no way Nick Saban is losing to the same guy twice in one season, much less an arch rival, where he won a national championship.

Truth is, if Les Miles does do the Nictator again, that will be twice this year and three times in a row overall, since he got him in 2010 too. That’s not happening. Saban is way too good a coach to lose three in a row to anyone: (Les Miles, Bill Belichick, or Vince Lombardi). Be real. And let’s be straight: you also can’t say LSU’s best beat Alabama’s best back on November 5th because they didn’t get Bama’s best shot. Bama made a number of uncharacteristic mistakes. Saban himself, uncharacteristically went braindead a few times; and they still were right there. Saban doesn’t lose rematches so it’s all pointing to the obvious: Bama Monday night. Ehhhhh!!

I’m going the other way. It says here, LSU will do Alabama again, and Miles will get over on Saban a third time in a row. Alabama didn’t beat Alabama, LSU beat Alabama in November... and they did it in their house, under the lights. And now they get them in, what amounts to their own house. Bama may have the better running back, but LSU has the better defense, the better quarterbacks, and I dare I say the better coach. And I don’t know why that sounds so sacrilegious: win this game and Miles is the better coach: two national titles will tell you that. And so would three straight wins over the man.

I’m taking the Hat, to pull the hatrick and shock the world: LSU 20, Alabama 17.

Penn St. is moving quickly in an attempt to begin to put college football’s worst scandal ever behind (them), and have taken the first step, by hiring New England Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien to be their coach. What I can’t figure out, is why O’Brien would want that gig. Not only is he walking into the most toxic situation ever without a hazmat suit, former Penn St. greats are killing the hiring saying they now want nothing to do with the program because of it. Lose-lose.

Let’s start with O’Brien. He’s an NFL assistant who wants a shot at being a head coach somewhere. I get that. So… wait a little longer, and you’ll get it; considering he works with Tom Brady and for the Hoodie and the Pats are having another big year, he could even have a look at a NFL job soon. Then if not that, then certainly a better college gig. The guy’s just 42: it’s not like he’s been passed over time and time again and this is his last shot. It’s probably one of his first shots. First and worst. He’s walking into one of the worst situations ever…and without the support of key alumni, something he has to have. And, on top of that, it’s hard to imagine Penn St. seeing him as anything other than the guy to get them to the coach: they really want to hire: namely, the blue chip, big name killer, that would never take on what O’Brien is taking on himself: namely, being the guy to follow the guy and the first one in after the worst scandal ever.

And if you ask key alumni, it’s the worst hire ever. Former Nittany Lion great and NFL’er Lavar Arrington went crazy when he heard it: “I will put my Butkus in storage. I will put my Alamo Bowl MVP trophy in storage. Jerseys, anything Penn St. in storage. Wherever Tom Bradley goes, that’s the school I’ll start to put memorabilia up in my home. I’m done. I’m done with Penn St. If they’re done with us, I’m done with them.” And he’s not the only one saying it: another former All-American linebacker, Brandon Short said, “Penn St. is a family and it is real and if they choose to get rid of Bradley and not hire a Penn St. coach, then they’ve turned their backs on our entire family.”

Look, I get why the family is bent. The family wasn’t consulted on the hire. And family members that did everything the right way, the Penn St. way don’t appreciate being guilty by association. I get that. The problem is, those who didn’t play there or go there no longer see the family the way they used to. Now, the Penn St. way conjures up images of the worst crimes you could possibly commit. And the administration knows that and is moving to change that conversation. And it’s not going to be easy. And it could take years…if it happens at all. And the only way to do that, is to go outside the family and find someone who has never had any contact with Jerry Sandusky. If you hire within the family, the stigma remains and the questions will always exist. The school isn’t accusing its former greats of anything or looking to disassociate itself from them; its’ trying to get beyond the worst scandal ever: and new coat of paint in the locker room isn’t going to cut it. They need a clean break from the past coaching staff. So, staying within the family was never really an option.

I've said for years the fellas in Vegas know more about football than anyone playing or coaching it. But unless those cats set the Orange Bowl over/under at 103 they didn't see that coming. And clearly, neither did Clemson. West Virginia 70. Clemson 33. Doesn't get much worse than giving up 70 on national TV, right? Well, it easily could have. If the Mountaineers wanted to hang a hundred on Clemson, they would have. No joke. My listeners are like, "You see that Rome?" West Virginia put up "Madden Numbers" last night... no they didn't. You don't score 70 in Madden…, not even on "Rookie" level with cheat codes. And you really shouldn't sniff 70 in a BCS game either…not, against an allegedly elite team who had about a month to prepare for it. We just witnessed the biggest Orange Bowl embarrassment since Jessica Simpson's sister got all guttural and nearly started a riot with her halftime performance.

Normally, someone hangs 70 on you and you either A, didn't show up, B quit, or C both. But the really weird thing is, I'm going to take D, none of the above. Clemson did show up: they actually led 17-14 early in the second quarter... and I really don't think they stopped playing. They were just that badly outclassed. And outschemed. I mean, how many times did they get beaten on that little Geno Smith flip pass sweep to the motion man? I lost count at 6. It's a nice play. It's not that nice. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me a dozen times…score 70 on me.

Look, Dabo Swinney is an unbelievable story: and coming into last night had worked a small miracle at Clemson. But last night he and his squad were victims of a huge beatdown. I'm sure he'll tell his guys there will be better days. And he's right, because there certainly won't be any worse.

Take: Norvell Cannot Be Killed

There are some things that cannot be killed. Gym memberships. Cockroaches. Terminators. And Norvell Turner. Show me your lightning bolt, San Diego, because like it or not, Norv Turner is coming back. And judging from your emails and tweets, a lot of you don’t like it. I want to say this is incredible. The guy was dead in the water at 4-7. There was no way he was coming back.

But he’s the NFL’s answer to that slasher villain who’s been chainsawed, macheted, shotgunned and drowned. Yet somehow he keeps getting back up and hacking cats. I used to think that Brian Dawkins was the toughest man in the NFL. Maybe Ben Roethlisberger. But now I’m convinced it’s the 59 year old man in the windbreaker on the sideline. You think Brandon Jacobs is tough to bring down? You can’t gang-tackle Norvell. No matter how many times he misses the playoffs or how many times his team underachieves, he refuses to go down. Of course he’s coming back next year. He’s always coming back. Coming back? I’m surprised team president Dean Spanos didn’t extend him. Of course, Spanos, who hates change says the reason he’s bringing Norv back is the players love him and they didn’t quit on him. Yeah, they didn’t quit on him…they just didn’t start for him until December. They usually don’t. And if they love the guy so much why they don’t play up for him in October and November; what were they doing losing six in a row in the middle of the year.

Seriously, if his teams were tough as he is, this cat would be Vince Lombardi. And normally, I’d say this really is it, Super Bowl or bust, Norv, but I can’t, because you really can’t kill this guy. He will not die.

Wolverine fan, congrats on ripping a BCS win, but enough about how you’re not getting enough love or credit for doing it. The reason for that is, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a team play worse and still win a BCS game. Great, scoreboard: but you’re getting as much credit as you deserve for it. Not all that much. I love Denard Robinson’s game, he’s one of the slickest cats ever… but the only thing the Nard dog really did last night was heave a couple of six point prayers in the direction of Junior Hemingway. Great name. Great hops. The sun also rises. And so does the wideout. About 40 inches. And it’s a good thing too, because if Hemingway’s vert was 35 instead of 40, the maize and blue get smacked last night.

But if you want to talk about a legitimate star: the true MVP of last night’s win, look no further than Michigan kicker Brendan Gibbons. A legend was born last night. Be straight. Have you ever seen a kicker that looks like that? Strike that, have you ever seen a human being who looks like that? That head lettuce. That face lettuce. That porch. That running back number. That left leg cannon. That’s exactly what I’m talking about. Last night was the rare game when I was pumped that a team stalled in the red zone and ran their field goal kicker out. B-Gibbs goes 3-3, with the game winner. And this cat has it all. The game. The look. And he had the rap. Asked after the game what he was thinking about before the final kick, he got this gem:

“Brunette girls.” Bam! Thanks for getting specific with it, B. And finally…even though the Wolverines didn’t look great doing it on the field, they looked awesome off it, in their amazing ‘hysteria’ inspired Def Leppard victory tees. Hail to the victors. Hail to the kicker. Hail to the Leppard. (And definitely pour some sugar on it fellas).

Again, credit for winning the Sugar Bowl. And big ups to Brady Hoke for ripping 11 games in his first season. I mean, at this point, a Big Ten team winning any bowl game is like winning a national championship. But the biggest reason the Wolverines won that game is…because someone had to. And let’s not confuse a close game with a great game, because that was nothing of the sort. I’ve never seen a team more determined to lose a big game than Virginia Tech was last night. I mean, if the Hokie game plan was to jack up one critical play after another, for four quarters, they nailed it. The reason Frank Beamer looked like he was going to (throw up in his own mouth) the entire night is because he was: “I’m about half-sick right now. Too many mistakes…they weren’t stopping us: we were stopping ourselves.”

Normally, the “we beat ourselves” take is one of the worst in sports, but last night may have been one of the few times when it made sense. Because the Hokies took Beamer ball and they flipped it. I never thought I would see that team do something as amateur as running into the punter to extend a drive, or as sloppy as fumbling a kick return. The Hokies have long been the ultimate special team’s killers. And they can add getting beaten by the ugliest fake field goal ever to that long list of accomplishments. Oh, and getting stuffed on the ugliest fake punt ever as well. They had more special teams breakdowns in a single night than they have in all the years Frank Beamer has been there. So of course Hokie kicker Justin Myer missed his field goal attempt in O.T. like he had and the unit had any chance of executing anything of consequence on a night like that. And Hokie fan, stop crying about Danny Coale’s overturned T.D. pass: sure it looked like a T.D. To you. To me. To Coale. To pretty much everyone but the old guys in stripes. But you wouldn’t have needed that play if you hadn’t jacked up about a dozen others before it.
