“I’ll Have Another” was sensational in gunning down Bodemeister in the Preakness Saturday, and horse racing has the one thing it needs most: a star, with a shot at the Triple Crown. So can he do it? Maybe: given the earlier fractions and how far he had to come, he had no business running down a freak like Bodemeister Saturday. The horse is talented, has unbelievable grit, is lightly raced and if he remains sound, he’s going to be tough to beat.

Still, there’s a reason no one has done it in 34 years. It’s hard! And as much as I love this horse, better horses have had a shot and come up short. Given the distance, the fact that there are a few monsters that skipped the Preakness and are now fresh and this is his third race in five weeks, I just don’t see how he can do it. And this isn’t a shot at I’ll Have Another, I just don’t think anyone can do it at this point. No one has in more than three decades. I hope I’m wrong, but I’ve seen this movie before and it never ends the way you want it to.

The greatest two minutes in sports became the most unlikely two minutes after I’ll Have Another gunned down Bodemeister to win the Kentucky Derby. Unlikely, because it was the first Derby win for the horse’s owner, trainer, and obscure rookie jockey. The first win for a horse starting in the number 19 post. And a win for horse that sold originally for just 11,000 dollars in 2010 and then again for 35 grrr in 2011.

That’s the ultimate dream: owners, jockeys, trainers, bloodstock agents, grooms etc. often spend their careers chasing it and never get a sniff of the race, much less a win. Every horse has a story, but not many are better than this one.

It’s the first Saturday in May, so it’s time for the most exciting two minutes in all of sports, the Kentucky Derby. Look, I’m the last one you all should be asking, but folks keep hitting me up for my pick so here it is…Union Rags.

Unbelievable as a two year old, and brilliant as a 3 year old and extremely talented. He’s training well, gets a very good post, should have a nice trip and there’s plenty of pace for him. He’s peaking at just the right time, and his trainer, Michael Matz, had Barbaro so he knows what has to be done to win this race.

That’s my pick. You lose money off it, don’t come crying to me. You win, chip me off my ten percent. Good luck.

DEL MAR, Calif. – Mizdirection’s front-running win in Friday’s $90,285 Sandy Blue Handicap at Del Mar was a milestone first stakes win for the filly and one of her co-owners.

The one-mile turf race for 3-year-old fillies was TV sports commentator Jim Rome’s first stakes win as an owner. Rome shared a first-place purse of $54,171 with partners Michael Kramek, Tom Lenner, Alan Peterson, and Robert Strauss, but the prize money was not foremost on his mind after the race.

“What I made today doesn’t equal the way it feels,” Rome said in the winner’s circle.

At least I’m not the only one trying to prop up a dying sport, Horseracing. So are the legends at the Maryland Jockey Club. Unfortunately, legislators, and some of the sport’s bluebloods just don’t see the genius in their efforts. You might recall, they tried to spike interest in the Preakness with their ‘Get Your Preak on’ campaign last year. Club president Tom Chuckas says they were looking to target the younger demographic by trying to “Speak their language.” It’s called marketing, people. Even if get your preak on was code for get your drink on. And this year, they’ve dialed it way up; you’re looking live at Kegasus!!! Yes, I said, Kegasus. Half man, half horse, all party!! He’s been dubbed lord of the infield fest. And his catchphrase for one of the sport’s most prestigious events is…wait for it…a little longer…I’m not making this up: “A 10 hour party to celebrate a two minute race. Now we’re talking.” ….bam!! This isn’t some freak who crashed the party; he’s hosting the party and was put there by organizers. Incredible!

And predictably, some folks aren’t down; specifically Maryland delegate Pat McDonough: “You can’t fix stupid. The campaign is infantile and another example why the horse industry is in decline. They’ve taken a great sporting event and turned it into a fraternity party.” You’re right, you can’t fix stupid. But you can acknowledge brilliance. The campaign is infantile? Your take is infantile (senator?) The sport is dying for a lot reasons, but this isn’t one of them. Of course Kegasus is ridiculous, especially since he’s not even a Pegasus, he’s a centaur, but there’s not beer related pun in centura. And that centaur just played his way into a burn on this show.

Now we’re talking. If I can get out there I will, Kegasus, the first pop’s on me.

As a thoroughbred owner, I’m all about the first Saturday in May. And I’m fired up for tomorrow’s Kentucky Derby. Just not as fired up as I normally am because half the field can win it this time. And that’s not a good thing. Don’t confuse parity with mediocrity. There’ are no monsters and probably no chance for the sport getting the transcendent star that it desperately needs; no chance for someone to make a run at the Triple Crown, or move the sport’s needle. That said, it’s still the greatest two minutes in sports. And it’s still big. Obviously, the safe pick is the favorite, Dialed In. He’s a stone cold closer and you know he’s going to come running. But while he is the safe pick, he’s not my pick. Being that it’s the Derby, there are so many factors, variables and traffic and the alleged best horse usually doesn’t win.

Also, while my man Bob Baffert has brought better horses with him to Churchill, and part of me wants to go with his entry Midnight Interlude; Baffert’s feeling it, and came on TV yesterday and plugged his horse and his watch so you know he has some good JRIB Karma. Robert, I’ll be slumming it at Hollywood Park running against you in the 7th tomorrow and if Gallatin’s Run beats you again, I’ll be bumping my gums again. But at Churchill, I’m going to go with ArchArchArch. I love him. You’d have to, to take him running out of the one hole. But I’m betting he’s going to save enough ground around the first turn to make an impact late. He’s fast, tough as can be, and has trained extremely well there. I hate the one post, but it says here he hits the board no matter what, and I’m taking him to win. Then again, what do I know about Horse Racing. If I knew anything about the ponies, I wouldn’t own them.

Take: Zenyatta Looks To End Career Perfect

The only thing that keeps Zenyatta from ending her career a perfect 20-0 and doing the boys again in the Breeder’s Cup Classic, is bad racing luck. Her best beats their best and the only thing that prevents the sport from getting the story it’s so desperate for, is traffic trouble or a bad trip.

Getting jammed up against lesser horses isn’t a problem. She has the talent to get herself out of trouble but not against this field. And a lot of that is going to be on jockey Mike Smith who’s had a couple of close calls with Zenyatta in the past. If he gets a good trip, he should let her go at the top of the stretch, and she’ll put the hammer down, thanks for coming.
He says he’s never asked for that last gear. Well, tomorrow is the day she’ll finally get to use it. Her detractors continually bang on her for never leaving California, and question how she’ll get over this surface and whether or not she wants to go this far. Eehhh!!! A mile and a quarter is actually her best distance…it’s the others that don’t want it. And I think she’ll actually do better on the dirt than she has on the synthetic where she’s run most of her races.
Look, I never care who wins or loses. Ever. I’m paid not to root. But part of this burn is coming from my heart and not my head. I love the horse. One of ours went up against her and got hammered. And I’ve been to Zenyatta’s barn and spent a little time around her. She’s spectacular, and I’d love to see her win….and she will… with a little racing luck. She just needs a good pace and trip, and I think she’ll get them.
