“Palun ära täna tööle tule – ükski klient ei tule nii märja ja tuulise ilmaga välja sööma,” sai Tiiu kõne peenest veeäärsest restoranist, millega samas hoones elab ka Russell Crowe. Eriti pikaks veninud vananaiste suvi on läbi.

Siiski on talv muutnud kõiki veidi tubasemaks.

“Hey Honey, would you like some action?” followed by a wink is my first memory of Kings Cross – The Golden Mile as it’s also known. Well it’s not quite a mile and it’s golden probably only for crooks.

Kings Cross is a fascinating place to visit, don’t get me wrong, it’s absolutely messed up, but it has the most varied mix of people I have every seen in one place. So colorful that anywhere else but KingsX my autopilot* – once kicked in – would take my straight home, in there it takes me out of the club and startled by the kish-kash going on feels that it’s time wake up the devil again and have some more fun.

In the building with the humongous Coca-Cola sign that marks the beginning of KingsX is the Piano Room which has often enjoyable live bands playing covers of anything between Sinatra and Metallica while you try to figure out which glass has water and which has your G&T – spirits are watered down shamelessly. The singers are young, beautiful and later led to some nearby strip club by a greasy, old, fat producer (or at least so is written on the business card he flashes) who tries to play his influence in the music world for some action with the naive girl who’s ego and hopes are inflated to breaking point in the process.

Attached to the Piano Room is Trademark favorite place for 18 year old girls from the outer suburbs, pimped to the max – awesomely pretty, thin and obnoxiously loud, drunk and dumb.** I’ve never had a decent look at the place, it’s always been a blur, never had any fun in there as well.

* Autopilot – the angel on the right hand shoulder that always takes me home once the devil on the left has passed out. Sometimes buys food, many times tries to talk to my friends on the phone or internet, sends “cute” text messages, undresses and forces me to drink ludicrous amount of water (or beer if there is any in the fridge) before going to sleep – just to torture me by having me wake up for the terrible need to pee in the morning.

** To people familiar with Estonian pop-culture they could be summed up as: vändra-avelid.

Walking thru a park bang-smack in the middle of Sydney last night at 7pm I saw two girls dressed to the max. Heels so high it hurts to look at them and dresses so short that barely anything is left for imagination. They turned off the paved walkway on to the grass and then in to the bushes. Well not really into them, between the bushes still very visible to everyone one of the girls lifts up her black dress and a fraction of a second later slides down her knickers as well truly bareing even the little that had been left for imagination a minute before. She starts yelling “Sorry-Sorry-Sorry, don’t look, don’t look”. I turn my head and continue walking shaking my head lightly. I’ve seen this happen before here, but it’s the first time I’ve seen it happen so early, even before the party has started. But I guess, if you got to go, you got to go.

Most of Sydneys nightlife is located in the areas which I call The Triangle (Kings Cross, Oxford Street and Sydney City) and some scattered spots around beach suburbs.

Most famous of course is Kings Cross, the place where you can find young, pretty and loud girls next to hairy bikers, bankers in suits about to pass out next to transsexual hookers, posh(ish) night clubs next to strip clubs, scores of hostels next to 24/7 McDonalds filled with backpackers.

Then there is Oxford Street, the gay nightlife area. Sydney is said to be the number 2 city in the world for gays and it shows. Walking down Oxford you see gay clubs, sex shops, bottle shops and some cafes and restaurants which usually don’t last long. People dressed as angels, in tank-tops and furry leggings.

Central Business District is the home for good old fashioned big night clubs like Ivy and prettily decorated lounges like the Establishment (it has the unofficial nick name: “Dry cleaners – because it’s the place where pretty girls come to pick up their suits!”), also bars, pubs and clubs for tourists. It’s home to one of the most famous jazz clubs in Australia – The Basement.

The beach areas have nightlife that is more seasonal then the one in The Triangle. There are two seasons: Summer and Students. Bondi Beach, Coogee Beach, Manly, Rose Bay all of them have their fair share in the action and distinct characteristics.

Nightlife of course extends to other suburbs as well, Newtown and Surry hills have their cafes, restaurants and live music venues and a very big part is in peoples homes. House parties are very popular and oh-so-fun (and cheap!) way to meet now people and dance till your shoes catch fire.

Each of the areas mentioned above will get their own article in the Sydney Nightlife series over the next few weeks.

Few weeks back I got my new Canon S90 digital compact camera. I was looking for a new camera to suit my needs and aspirations for a long time and was very excited when Canon announced the S90 IS in August. And when I finally got it, I was surprised at how much flexibility the camera has. What I really-really love about this camera is the f2 lens, fully manual controls, the ability to set flash exposure compensation, shutter speeds from 1/1600 to 15″, ability to set self-timer to any value between 1 and 30 seconds and to take up to 10 consecutive photos at a time. And it’s small. I believe that in this form factor it is truly the best camera in the world am really happy to own one, I take it with me pretty much everywhere and have captured some great shots, despite my lack of photographic training or extensive experience. It has an automatic mode for low-light photos, and it does an awesome job in capturing really dark scenes, but the lack of manual control over the ISO and other settings in this mode means that you will get a fair bit of noise in your pictures due to the ridiculously high ISO settings (up to 12800).

After the jump a few pictures with stories to them.

Moon rising over Bondi Beach. 4s, f2.5, ISO 100

Izabela. 1/25, f2, ISO 500

Beach Volleyball at Bondi Beach. 1/1600, f7.1, ISO 160. The camera is absolutely awesome for taking these beach action shots. In Shutter Priority mode (Tv) set the shutter to the fastest (1/1600), and adjust the ISO so that the aperture will be around maximum (f8 or slightly below), don’t worry about composition 10mpx will give you enough room to crop later and keeping it half pressed will give you quickly some awesome results.

Palm Beach" width="512" height="384" />Seaplane escaping a thunderstorm in Palm Beach. 1/125, f4, ISO 80. I saw the plane taking off and quickly pulled my camera out and, in P mode got this shot.

People often ask me about the situation of the job market and availability of work here. Well there is the short answer and the long answer.

Short answer would be: everyone who is active and determined will at least survive.

As for the long answer lets narrow it down by assuming the point of view of a (temporary or permanent) migrant.

Australia has some unique properties to their job market which regarding migrants get regulated by the government using some cunning visa policies.

There are shortages of local work force in:
• manual labour intensive and often seasonal areas of farming
• all even a little skilled positions in remote and regional areas
• skilled and highly skilled positions in the cities

To satisfy the need, there are several visa options available for migrants:
• Working Holiday Visa
• Regional Sponsored Visa
• Employer Sponsored Visa
• Independent Skilled Migrant Visa

Working Holiday Visa is by far the most popular visa, as it is accessible to young people and don’t have many limitations to it as far as applying goes. There are however some limitations to what you can do with it and some incentives to go and relieve the farm work hands shortage. Firstly you are allowed to work only for 6 months for one employer. This is to direct you to seasonal jobs and make it harder for you to compete for permanent positions, thus reduce the risk that you take jobs away from local people. The second being a promise to extend your visa for another year if you work at least three months in regional farming or related position. This is there to direct you even more to seasonal farm works.

These aspects combined with the fact that most people coming with this visa are young, inexperienced and irresponsible gives this visa a bad name in the eyes of the employers (or worse, in Australia mostly in the eyes of employment agents, more on that later) and the result is that it’s very hard to find a well paid, sustainable and skilled (as opposed to muscle based) job. As you see, the government has succeeded here in creating a visa that gives a hard time to compete with locals and is good at filling the workforce shortages in unwanted jobs.

I won’t go into much detail about the rest of the visas, other than don’t think it is easy to get an employer sponsored visa or an independent skilled migrant visa. Can be done but needs you to prove that you are worthy and the obstacles are quite real.

For rural manual jobs times have changed a lot. It all started when some farmers wanted to cut costs and began hiring SE-Asian people for fruit picking. They worked much faster and we’re happy with a lot less money. This resulted in locals moving to other areas of work and Asians raising their rates after a few years to levels beyond the original salary of the locals. The original Aussie pickers of course did not want to work there anymore and farmers got screwed over by their own greed. So the government needed to be creative and these new visas were put in place. This was all good until too many people started coming here for work, especially in the light of economic downturn, everybody thinking it’s easy to make money in the farms and being sure that there has to be a good position for me in the city as well. Now there are big signs at the gates of many farms that no workers are needed and there is generally an over-saturation in this field.

Two aspects however have to be noted. Firstly farm work is hard, repetitive, dirty and very boring. Young people coming here have probably never done any manual labour before and are also impatient, so they don’t last long either because they decide to try luck somewhere else or the quality of their work is unacceptable. So workers change very often and hardworking people are valued and will not have a hard time.

Secondly in the big farming centers like Mildura, VIC and Bundaberg, QLD work is almost exclusively distributed through Hostels (Backpackers as they are called in Australia). This means that you have to pay for the hostel owner to find you work and more importantly as you call the hostel owner to ask for work they often lie to you about work being available to lure you to stay at their place and pay for it. By the way this kind of behavior is called: “being positive” in Australia and is noticeable in other areas of life as well. Sometimes it’s very hard to get a straight answer about the core issue to improve your actions.

These working hostels also mean that you have to spend your evenings with young people who like to drink and smoke a lot, so you’ll end up spending a lot of money instead of saving to get out of the hellhole as fast as possible. Staying in caravan parks in a tent or private cabin with focused friends will save you a lot of money and will enable to have more fun in places where you would actually enjoy it.

Last note on the rural work: buying your own car for a party of 4 is a BIG advantage in finding work and saving money.

Finding a job in the cities is a topic I will discuss in the next installment, stay tuned.

It was a very hot, yet cloudy day yesterday. Even after raining heavily in the evening it still felt very hot outside, I attributed it to the amount of bubbly flowing through me but when I woke up at around 6am a mate had sent me a text: “go outside, take pictures, never seen sky so red and I can’t even see the next building”. Went outside, was very red and had a weird smell to it, like the one you get from smoke machines in clubs (or apparently my housmate has one lying around in the shed, “just in case”). Thought that it’s the department of burn-off again clearing a big patch of bush and went back to bed, closed the window, not to inhale whatever it was in the air.

On my way to work couple of hours later it felt really weird, the streets were red, all the cars covered in some fine substance and people wearing white masks. “Fish flu or another weird sounding scare?”, “Some military experiment gone sour?”, “Wait, wasn’t there a big rave going on last night, did they unleash the mother of all atomic smoke machine bombs?”

Turns out my friends back at home knew the answer before I did. Big weather had moved lots of hot air and dust from South Australia and inland NSW to Sydney. How boring. Although even the locals haven’t seen anything like this before.

In other news, I got my visa extended till November next year and will start a permanent contract with the company I’m working for, participating in an ocean sailing race on Saturday, trying to convert my pilots license and having in general an awesome time.

This site has been mostly about my travels and encounters while I’m away from home. Now that I have a new home in a new country, I can’t really say that I’m travelling at the moment, but I still get requests that I should keep writing about stuff that happens around me and to me. So I think It’s time for me to change the look of this site, language of this site and most important the range of topics I write about.

I will continue to write about observations around me, but will expand topics to include a more work related material, some of which will be how-to’s about tech puzzles that I had to piece together myself and had wished a nice tutorial for, or on the other hand about notable trends and topics in online dating world, like ideas and analysis of social behaviour and how that differs in internet and out there in the real world. Add a post here and there about flying, sailing, beach and brewing your own beer and I should be pretty much set.

Please make me write more often by using verbal equivalent of a kick in the arse from time to time.

I decided to include old posts I’ve written in Estonian and if at all feasible will try to experiment with Google Translate to translate them into English. First tries were quite horrible I must say, but I guess someone has to teach google Estonian as well.

Peas keerlesid mõtted mida võiks vabalt värskelt armunu omadeks pidada, ning tagatippu sain kõne Melbournest: ”Me tahame sind teise vooru intervjuule, homme!”.

Hommik saabus imeilusa päikesetõusuga Sydneysse sisse sõites, kõrvaklappidest laulis Liane Carroll umbes nii: “The city’s beautiful in the early morning sun” ja elu tundus ilus.

Jälle samas köögis viibides hõiskasin: “BACK IN BUSINESS, HELL YEAH!” ning tõmbasin seljatagant šampusepudeli välja.
