CLEAN UP ON ISLE 2
Journey 2: The Mysterious Island
Review by M.V. Moorhead/Less Hat, Moorhead

The sequel to 2008’s Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D is titled Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. The pun built into the title is the whole of the movie’s verbal cleverness—it’s been a while since you’ve seen a movie, even a kids’ movie, with dialogue this corny and insipid. Fortunately, there are visual pleasures to make up for it.

Big, beefy Brendan Fraser being unavailable this time, the big beefy duties went to Dwayne Johnson, here the stepfather of the sullen kid (Josh Hutcherson), from the first film. The two of them end up stranded, along with a comic-relief helicopter pilot (Luis Guzman) and his cute daughter (Vanessa Hudgens), on an island of wonders somewhere near Palau, hidden behind a permanent waterspout. The boy’s adventurous grandfather is already there, played by Michael Caine—or, to put it more accurately, Michael Caine was paid to smile good-naturedly and speak the role’s lines.

The island was an inspiration, we are told, not only for Verne’s The Mysterious Island but also for Stevenson’s Treasure Island and apparently both Lilliput and Brobdingnag in Gulliver’s Travels—its residents include elephants the size of terriers and bees the size of ponies. Dumb as all this is, Journey 2 is perfectly watchable.

The CGI effects have a garish appeal, the 3D flourishes better than usual, the action all but nonstop. About the only time things slow down is for Johnson to sing “What a Wonderful World,” pleasantly enough, accompanying himself on the ukulele. There’s also a dreamy slow-motion shot of Hudgens falling through the air toward the jungle that verges on real, as opposed to kitschy, beauty.

So sure, take your kids, but also do them a favor: Before or after, show them (and yourself) the 1961 movie adaptation of Mysterious Island, with added Ray Harryhausen monsters. Beside it, this new film is punier than a Lilliputian elephant.

In theaters, by the way, Journey 2 is preceded by a Warner cartoon short, Daffy’s Rhapsody, in which the manic-depressive waterfowl sings to Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2, all while dodging Elmer Fudd’s bloodlust. Opera has been good to the Looney Tunes—three of the best Bugs Bunny shorts, The Rabbit of Seville (1949), What’s Opera, Doc? (1957) and Long-Haired Hare (1948), are operatic send-ups—and this new film is probably the best of Warner’s post-Mel Blanc efforts, in no small part because…Blanc actually provides Daffy’s voice! The animation is a setting of a ‘50s-era children’s record by the peerless voice actor, and it’s quite wonderful to hear his irreplaceable tones filling the multiplexes.

M.V. Moorhead is a frequent Jabcat On Movies contributor whose work has also appeared in publications ranging from the New Times weeklies to USA Today to Weird Tales. His e-novel, “Super Eight Days” (no relation to the film “Super 8″) is available from Amazon Kindle.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island
Review by Ed Rampell

There have been at least half a dozen screen versions of Jules Verne’s Mysterious Island – including two silent and one Soviet adaptation – and the latest incarnation is a good fun escapist flick with 3D IMAX special effects. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island plays fast and loose with authors Jonathan Swift, Robert Louis Stevenson (who is, BTW, buried at Samoa) and especially Verne. The novel by that sci fi pioneer has been adapted for the screen at least as far back as 1902, when Georges Melies shot Verne’s A Trip to the Moon, which Martin Scorsese revisits in his multi-Oscar nominated Melies biopic, Hugo.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is so titled because it is produced by some of the same producers of the lame 2008 adaptation of Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth starring Brendan Fraser and Josh Hutcherson, who reprises his role in Mysterious as Sean Anderson, the scion of explorers. In this loose sequel of sorts Dwayne Johnson, aka “The Rock,” portrays Hank, who has married Sean’s mother played by Kristin Davis (Charlotte in Sex in the City). Hank has a hankering to be a good stepfather to the alienated Sean, which leads to their joint adventure in quest of Sean’s long lost Indiana Jones-type grandfather.

Their odyssey takes them to the Pacific Islands, and for some mysterious reason the titular isle is located near Palau, although in Verne’s novel it is situated 1,600 miles east of Aotearoa/New Zealand. Instead, it’s pretty obvious that this movie was shot, in part, on location in Hawaii.

Since I’ve lived in both Palau and Hawaii, it’s obvious to me this island was shot in the latter, not the former. And although the pic identifies Palauas being in the “South Pacific,” it’s not: Palauis located in the Western Pacific. I guess that for “Haole-wood” (“haole” is the Hawaiian word for Caucasians), it’s a case of goofy geography and if you’ve seen one island, you’ve seen them all. Ditto for casting. The Puerto Rican actor Luis Guzman (HBO’s How to Make It in America series) plays Gabato, a bumbling Palauan helicopter pilot who provides much of the flick’s comic relief that comes perilously close to Stepin Fetchit-like celluloid stereotypes. Gabato also references himself as “Polynesian,” but Palauans are Micronesians.

Salinas-born Vanessa Hudgens, who plays Gabato’s daughter Kailani (Hawaiian for “heavenly sea”), portrayed a Latinain in the High School Musical TV series. According to IMDB, this actress “is of mixed cultural background, as her father is of Irish and Native American descent, and her mother… is of Chinese-Filipino-Spanish descent.” Well, at least thePhilippines is about 500 miles fromPalau; a tad closer thanPuerto Rico, located clear on the other side of the world.

In that grand Dolores Del Rio/Conchita Montenegro/Raquel Torres tradition, Hispanic actors (mis)represent indigenous Pacific Islanders. Some may protest to this writer — who co-authored Made In Paradise, Hollywood’s Films of Hawaii and the South Seas with Luis Reyes — that actors can portray any ethnic type and one doesn’t have to be a chicken to know an egg. Fair enough. But it remains a mystery to me why so few Hollywood pictures ever get the ethnic Island casting right – especially when there are so many gifted Pacific talents.

Interestingly enough, Dwayne Johnson, who is actually part-Samoan, is never specifically referred to as being Polynesian. However, he has a lovely scene singing and strumming the ukulele; the song is reprised during the final credits, which proves that not only does the ex-wrassler have a decent voice and musical ability, but that he has a “co-producer” credit. Having said that, Dwayne has a light comedic touch and a telegenic, charismatic presence, although for some reason he doesn’t disrobe. Maybe the pecs and abs are aging? I don’t know why they chose not to lose his shirt – I would have loved to see his entire Polynesian style tattoo. But in any case, you really haven’t lived until you’ve see The Rock in an IMAX 3D close up.

Speaking of which, director Brad Peyton’s 3D IMAX whizbang wizardry is good, especially the scene where the characters ride gigantic bees, as if they’re “paniolos” atop galloping broncos. But some of the island backdrops look kinda cheesy and painted, and flowers and other flora likewise look unrealistic. The secret to attaining Samuel Coleridge’s “willing suspension of disbelief” is to provide enough realism for the beholder to buy into it. The 1961 Mysterious version with special effects by the immortal Ray Harryhausen was actually more spectacular. Who can ever remember the actors who discover that the “beach” they’re walking on is really the shell of a giant crab?! And the new adaptation replaces the original Civil War era hot air balloon with a helicopter.

Of course, the movie includes that old South Seas Cinema cliché of an exploding volcano. But Michael Caine, an old favorite, is always a welcome screen presence, and the recurring theme of being a good father is worthy. But did Verne’s novel really have that Atlantis subplot?

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is a an entertaining escapist flick co-written by literary kleptomaniacs (including Brian and Mark Gunn) excavating the literary estates of Verne, Swift and Stevenson. (Can you say: “hodgepodge”?) The screening I attended was preceded by a dee-lightfully DAFFY Warner Bros. cartoon in IMAX and 3D, which brought back happy memories of double features that often included cartoons.I do recommend Mysterious — after you put your brain into neutral, that is, and just kick back and enjoy. Th-th-that’s all, film fans!

BOX OFFICE PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND OF FEBRUARY 10-12

There are four new films opening in wide release this weekend: Channing Tatum tries to reignite his marriage with an amnesia ridden Rachel McAdams in love story The Vow from Sony Screen Gems, Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds play a game of cat and mouse in suspense thriller Safe House from Universal, another old film hits theatres in the third dimension with the rerelease of George Lucas’ Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace 3D from 20th Century Fox and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson fills in for Brendan Fraser in family-friendly adventure sequel Journey 2: The Mysterious Island from New Line Cinema. Based on my estimates, the Top 10 will generate about $138.7 million over the weekend, up about 7.4% from last year when both Just Go With It from Sony and Paramount’s Justin Bieber: Never Say Never led the overall Top 10 to a total of $128.4 million.

Preview Box Office Predictions For Next Weekend

THE VOW

Channing Tatum plus Rachel McAdams starring in a romantic drama based on a true story opening on the weekend before Valentine’s Day should equal box office gold, at least that is what Sony is hoping for this weekend. PG-13 rated The Vow from Sony Screen Gems should have what it takes to finish in first place this weekend, namely the attention of the date crowd and single women looking for a girl’s night out. It is no accident that Sony scheduled the film for this weekend as romantic films have a history of over-performing on the weekend leading into the lover’s holiday. The film is about a woman who loses her memories after an accident and her devoted husband who tries desperately to get her to remember their life together. Although it is based in truth, this may as well have been based on a best-selling novel from the Nicholas Sparks catalogue.

Over the last few years, both actors have come into their own and have become legitimate movie stars. Both stars also have history with romantic dramas, with McAdams starring in The Notebook (among others) and Tatum starring in Dear John, both of which grossed $80 million. The pairing of the two together should convince women that this is a must see movie and they will likely be out in force this weekend to support the film. The Vow also has absolutely no competition for its target audience and will capitalize on that in a big way. Look for The Vow to have a lovely debut of $35 million this weekend.

SAFE HOUSE

R-rated suspense thriller Safe House from Universal stars Denzel Washington as a rogue CIA agent who gets captured and is delivered to a safe house. When the safe house is attacked he is forced to go on the run with the young agent (Ryan Reynolds) tasked with looking after him. The plot doesn’t really matter as Safe House’s secret weapon is Denzel Washington. Really, is there a lead actor more reliable than Denzel when it comes to box office? He has starred in fourteen movies since 2000 (not including Safe House); eleven of which opened with more than $20 million. The actor has the Midas touch at the box office and there is no reason to believe that Safe House will be the exception to the rule.

Although two of his films (American Gangster and The Book of Eli) opened with more than $30 million, Safe House will likely open in the actor’s usual range in the low twenties. Washington does have some support in the form of Ryan Reynolds but after two box office bombs in a row (Green Lantern and The Change-Up), the actor has proven that he is not a guaranteed draw. The early reviews haven’t been very good, but Washington has certainly earned the trust and goodwill of the movie going public and they shouldn’t impact the opening all that much. The movie will face some competition for the young man demographic from last weekend’s box office champ Chronicle and The Phantom Menace which will also keep the film from breaking out. Expect Safe House to capture about $24 million this weekend.

STAR WARS: EPISODE 1 THE PHANTOM MENACE 3D

20th Century Fox hopes the force is with them this weekend for the rerelease of 1999’s biggest box office hit, Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, this time in 3D. Although The Phantom Menace was a huge hit, and the highest grosser among the prequel trilogy, it is one of the least loved entries in the series. Many fans of the original trilogy were highly disappointed by the film and the opinions have only gotten worse with time. Just check out any message board about the film for proof. That’s not to say that The Phantom Menace doesn’t have its fans, it just doesn’t have the support of the entire fanbase. Nonetheless, many fans who claim to hate the film will still buy a ticket just to see the awesome light saber duel at the end of the film in the third dimension.

George Lucas plans to release one Star Wars film a year in 3D, but one has to wonder if he started with the right film. The original film, 1977’s A New Hope probably would’ve been a better choice and would’ve likely performed better at the box office, drawing in all Star Wars fans. Besides the lack of fan support, The Phantom Menace has a few other problems heading into the weekend. Fellow 3D adventure film Journey 2: The Mysterious Island will steal away a portion of the family audience while Safe House may distract young men who otherwise would’ve been interested in another visit to the galaxy far, far away. Audiences are also continuing to tire of converted 3D and if word gets out that the effect is underwhelming, you can expect the box office for the film to dry up quicker than you can say scruffy looking nerf herder. I believe that Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace will blast off with about $21 million this weekend.

JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND

PG rated family adventure film Journey 2: The Mysterious Island from New Line Cinema is the sequel to 2008’s hit 3D film Journey to the Center of the Earth starring Brendan Fraser. This time around Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has stepped into the lead role left vacant by Fraser and is joined by the star of the original film, Josh Hutcherson, soon to be seen in The Hunger Games. The Rock has become a solid anchor in family films (The Game Plan, The Tooth Fairy and Race to Witch Mountain) and has also become the go to actor for sequels looking for a new leading man (Fast Five and G.I. Joe: Retaliation). As such, Journey 2 is the perfect vehicle for the pro-wrestler turned thespian. The first Journey opened with about $20 million but made its way to the $100 million mark because it was released at the very beginning of the 3D revolution. Journey 2 enters a marketplace where 3D has become the norm and while this might not impact its opening weekend, long term success is going to be difficult to achieve. The reviews have been mixed but Johnson has earned the trust of family audiences and they shouldn’t have much impact. Journey 2’s biggest obstacle will be direct competition from The Phantom Menace. Look for Journey 2: The Mysterious Island to uncover about $20 million this weekend.

Based on my estimates for the Friday to Sunday period, total box office will be up about 7.4% from 2011.

Bad cop, worse cop
Rampart
Review by Ed Rampell

Character studies can simply be presented as straightforward dramas. Or they can be encoded in genre conventions, which might improve their box office heft with the multiplex popcorn crowd. For instance, on the surface Bridesmaids is a wild and crazy comedy about females behaving badly. However, it is also — or really — about commitment-phobic, lonely, aging Annie Walker (Kristen Wiig) and her problems relating to and connecting with lovers and friends.

In the same way, Oren Moverman’s Rampart is about a bad cop behaving badly and worse. “Date Rape” Dave Brown (Woody Harrelson in one of his best performances ever) is enmeshed in police department corruption on steroids, specifically the “Rampart scandal” that shook the anti-gang unit of LAPD’s Rampart Division in the late 1990s. Brown operates within the framework of police brutality gone berserk, as the men in blue willy-nilly pummeled suspects black and blue, planted evidence such as drugs, peddled narcotics and perpetrated one of the worst, most far reaching cases of proven police misconduct in U.S. history. Indeed, instead of “serving and protecting” the Rampart section of Los Angeles, the criminal LAPD officers who ran amok were way worse than gangbangers, as they were protected by badges and uniforms, and our man Brown seems like one of the most rabid of these mad dogs in blue.

However, beneath the surface, Harrelson is providing an intimate portrayal of a man who is undergoing a severe midlife crisis. Indeed, Brown, who is a military (perhaps Vietnam?) veteran, is coming apart at the seams. Both his professional and private life is falling apart. His unusual living arrangement with, if I understood correctly, both of his ex-wives – who are, strangely enough, also sisters – Cynthia Nixon (Sex in the City’s Miranda) and Anne Heche (co-star of another HBO comedy, Hung), is likewise disintegrating.

To be fair to the bedeviled Brown, he does strive to be a good father to his daughters, little Margaret (Sammy Boyarsky) and teenager Helen (Brie Larson who – as Toni Collette’s daughter in Showtime’s United States of Tara – is used to playing children of troubled parents), who creates sexually charged artwork that would make a Madonna backup dancer, well, backup, and whose sexual preference, Rampart suggests, is being shaped by her ne’er do well dad.

Like a latter day John Wayne character, Brown lives by a moral code, believing that “soldiers” like him are part of the thin blue line, all that’s standing between law abiding citizens and the jungle out there. Like the Duke in innumerable Westerns, Brown’s vision of his role is racially tinged. What Brown fails to realize is that his Tarzan is worse than the “apes” who may be swinging on the vines of the banyan trees.

Although he’s clearly an anti-hero at best, what mitigates Harrelson’s character is that he picks up and beds attractive women (Audra McDonald and Robin Wright) during the course of the movie. Nothing warms the cockles (so to speak) of the male moviegoer’s heart more than onscreen masculine conquests, so this makes the mostly despicable Brown more appealing. However, upon closer inspection, his relationships with these women, as with his ex-wife sisters (and daughters) ranges from alienation (from Sartre to Camus to Genet on the estrangement scale) to tortured.

Harrelson’s acting ranges – like his character – from over the top to nuanced, and the now 50-plus actor’s body fits Brown’s persona, as an aging man who has seen better days and is losing his grip. In addition to the aforementioned, the top notch cast also includes Steve Buscemi and Sigourney Weaver as civilians who try to rein in the out of control Brown’s reign of terror and Ned Beatty as a onetime dirty cop (now a filthy ex-cop). Ice Cube plays the inevitable Internal Affairs-type investigator who tries to nail Harrelson’s wayward peace officer. Ben Foster, who co-starred with Harrelson in Moverman’s outstanding 2009 antiwar drama The Messenger, has a small role, if not a cameo, rather craftily playing a wheelchair-bound veteran.

Helming his second feature, Moverman proves himself once again to be a director of conscience, consciousness and cinematic ability. Rampart has great close-ups (including opening shots that evoke Brown’s hard ass persona) and a good use of subjective camera. Moverman goes all sixties cinema in a freewheeling sex club scene that reminded me of the Warholian party in 1969’s Midnight Cowby; I half expected Dustin Hoffman to appear, denouncing: “Wackos! They’re all a bunch of wackos!” Moverman’s movies move.

He also co-wrote the script with James Ellroy (1997’s L.A. Confidential), no stranger to the cops gone bad genre. In 1969, New York Mayor John Lindsay assigned NYPD brass and officers to see Costa-Gavras’ classic Z which, among other things, deals with police excessive use of force. Here’s hoping Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa will likewise make Rampart required viewing for all of those city officials who ordered law enforcers to raid the Occupy L.A. encampment at City Hall, along with the 1,400 LAPD pigs and others who participated. Perhaps a few light bulbs may go off above the heads of the police force notorious for its history of excessive use of force: Brutalizing Rodney King; cowardly fleeing L.A. when rioters outnumbered and outgunned them; perpetrating the Rampart scandal; assaulting innocent demonstrators at the Democratic National Convention; attacking journalists and peaceful protesters at a May Day rally; laying siege to Occupy L.A.; etc. Yes, “o’er the ramparts we watched, were so ungallantly streaming…”
