Passion’ is the story of Jack Passion, a man who has defied social convention and become an ambassador for the sport of competitive beard growing. Through good times and bad, he has pushed on to become the two time world beard champion. He shares this inspirational story with us and guides us through his world in a 7 minute narrative doc. He considers what his world has become due to his beard and contemplates the thought of a world without, much like that of the story of Samson and Delilah, he too faces the conflict of losing all he has become with just the cut of his hair.

Here I am in the August 2011 issue of Maxim talking about some of the great beards of our time and of time gone by. Click the page to see it full size.

The exhibition features assorted tales from a wide swath of contemporary life—including from artists, skateboarders, rappers, athletes, a stripper, a cop, and a historian—which Fish has reinterpreted in lovingly realized painted works. Rendered in acrylic on hand-cut wood panels, these thirty “story paintings” are accompanied by audio recordings of the source tales recounted by the original storytellers, available to gallery visitors on MP3 players and headphones mounted next to each work.

The show opens on June 21 and runs until July 16, 2011 at Joshua Liner Gallery in New York.

Whisker Wars

Whisker Wars is so funny you keep thinking it has to be some lost Will Ferrell movie…

• I will be traveling with a group of American competitors and their fans, on a tour that takes us through Iceland and on a Norwegian coastal cruise to our final stop in Trondheim.  This will be my second time to Iceland and my first to Norway.  It is my fourth World Championships.

• I will be competing in the category, Full Beard Natural, which I won in both 2007 (Brighton, England) and 2009 (Anchorage, Alaska).  My friend David Traver was the first American to take this category, back in 2003.  Since his pioneering win, FBN has become arguably the most popular category amongst American competitors.  I’m very proud to be representing the United States at the World Championships, especially in a category as American as Full Beard Natural.

• I am confident on a third victory.  I’m not worried about the competitors, as I’ve beaten everyone competing in Full Beard Natural at this contest before.  Additionally, at the most recent international event, I achieved a perfect score.  I am in the best form of my life; my beard is the best it’s ever been!

• The only remaining variable is the judging, which is different at every event.  The world of beard competitions is full of politics, but I have no reason to believe in anything but a fair competition.  My beard and consistent performance speak for themselves.

As you can see, I am excited for a fun trip with old friends and new.  Good luck and safe travels to my fellow competitors, I’ll see you there!
