Youtube Mixtape: From Downbeat, Hiphop, Breakbeat, Drum and Bass to House

When i grew up on my parent’s farm, there were not many sources for musical input. My main source was a radioshow from a bavarian radiostation called Zündfunk.

This was a revelation to me (beside this amazing compilation called Source Lab which i bought at that time in a secondhand shop in Frankfurt – 1995 downbeat, hiphop from france, Gilb’R and DJ Cam already there), i was recording a lot on tape, sending them letter after letter asking them for the playlists.

Now i digged out out some of these old tapes, turned on Shazam, and here we go – these are the tracks that made me go to the local music shop and ask for that stuff.

I must have annoyed the shit out of them. Until they got so nerved that the told me “look, we don’t have that stuff, go to this Pentagon shop, you know, they still sell vinyl there”. Well, did that, bought two turntables…and got hooked until to today.

Ok, don’t ask us, what is the connection between party-machine Tom Jones (see release picture) and Detroit. We really don’t know. Do you? We’ll be happy to know. Ok, back to the music. Release number three welcomes you with a slightly modified artwork and again three new tracks by Ludwig Coenen.

Just a few words on the music

“Brainflakes” makes the melodic but yet powerfull starter, bass-heavy but with friendly sounds – we think Tom Jones would maybe like it.

With track number 2 “Bring it to the boil” things get a little more nasty. It still has nothing to do with the before mentioned titan of entertainment though, but it definetively shakes asses.

Track number three “Inner Warmth” takes you to a little, dirty sideway. Could be a dangerous road though. But then, just around the corner when you least expect it, you’ll meet an old  beloved friend. What it is? Hear yourself… Ok, it’s chords. And now even the EP title makes sense, right?

Well, what shall we say about this? It’s Jack, its’s deep  and it’s all about Music. Dj Kareem leads us into an emotional journey of beautiful and driving House and Techno rythms. The first part of Kareems Mixtape starts out deep and bouncy. But it’s not the boring kind of high-end polished deephouse sound you can hear all over the place right now. No, it’s a steeper kind of deep feel wich sets appart his sound from others. The second part of the tape is more the ravey and freaky kind of sound  his audience appreciates so much when Kareem switches into “primetime mode” at the decks. Since living in Berlin next doors to germanys most famouse “Berghain”, the Dj and Producer is deeply influenced by the clubs sound, which he encapsulates by kickin hard rhytms, enriched with housy moods and atmospheres. This DJ-mix on deepfrequency.com is exceptionally good. On a quite long and epic trip DJ Alex takes us from rather slow and dubby spheres to some more housy, moving tracks. Don’t let yourself be fooled by the funny sound quality of the first 18 minutes which sound like the there is some kind of highpass-filter on and there is a lot of humming. But it get’s better, much better and is really worth listening. As far i can see, there is no download possibility, but the stream works very well:

Although some house aficionados will refuse to admit it, the development of house music has much of its success accredited to the rise and fall of disco. As a result, to appreciate the history of house music, we need to look further back than the 1980s and the development of the TR909 and TR808 drum machines; we also need to examine the growth of disco during the 1970s. This is because disco still forms a fundamental part of some of today’s house music and in many instances older disco records have been scrupulously sampled to produce the latest house tracks.

By 1981, disco was dead but not without first changing the entire face of club culture, changing the balance of power between smaller and major labels and preparing the way for a new wave of music. Disco fell victim to its own success in the late 1970s and early 1980s with the campaign of ‘disco sucks’ growing ever more popular.

In fact, in one extreme incident Steve Vahl, a rock DJ who had been against disco from the start, encouraged people to bring their disco collections to a baseball game on the 12th July 1979 for a ritual burning. After the game, a huge bonfire was lit and the fans were asked to throw all their disco vinyl onto the fire.

Out of these ashes rose the phoenix that is house, but it had been a large underground movement before this and contrary to the misconceptions that are spread around, it had actually been in very early stages of evolution before disco hit the mainstream….

We deeply appreciate the roots of house music! Therefor we dedicated the first Episode of  Jackpod the official Jack -Records Podcast show to the roots of the music we love. Jackpod#001 is hosted by Dj Enzo. He spreads love by ignoring any kind of coolness attitude and just does what he has dreamed of for long time. Presenting soulfull and ravy moods translated in to disco music. We think it’s like extasy without sideeffects. You will either love it or hate it. There’s no space inbetween and its real oldschool stuff from long forgotten times.

Well, what is this about? This is the first release of JACK. Jack? Who the hell is Jack? We are house-and-beyond music aficionados (as it is obviously called these days) and we like to share our music with you.

This first release contains three tracks of Ludwig Coenen – two of them are reminding about the straight and direct, and maybe a little bit the ravy-80ies-you-name it kinds of house.

The third one wallows right into the deeper fields of the same genre, delivering the mellow mood, we all like so much. Ok, we will not bore you further with describing what you can hear, just a few clicks away:
