Synopsis:

Written by Jackie Tohn and Lisa Brenner, THERE’S A SHOW IN HERE is a musical comedy for anyone who’s ever been alive. This is the story of one young woman’s failed journey to enlightenment.

Not quite a romp, almost a journey, and just shy of an epic, this is the story of Jackie Tohn, a girl who knows that the road to adulthood is paved in sweatpants, and isn’t afraid to wear a pair on stage when she sings about it.

If Jackie were a lumberjack, there would be no more trees. Sexy, campy, and with lungs the size of Bette Midler’s hair, Tohn is a natural storyteller with unstoppable theatrical tendencies and the vocal power of at least four humans.

Little miss facial expressions is a freak for flair, and entertains in a style that would make your Bubby proud (provided your Bubby likes curse words and talking about sex).

Pretty pop with a twitch, prepare for a playful paradox of vulnerability and arrogance, honesty and exaggeration, swagger and silliness, and songs about fish.

Jackie Tohn Bio:

Jackie Tohn is an NY-bred, LA-based actress and singer/songwriter.

Acting professionally since she was 12, Jackie can be seen in episodes of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, The Closer, Rules of Engagement, The Sopranos, Veronica Mars, The Nanny, Memphis Beat, CSI: NY and others. She has also been cast in a variety of TV pilots and had developments deals with Warner Bros, Nickelodeon and Fox.

Her theater experience includes creating all eight of her roles in the hit off-Broadway comedy Jewtopia, as well as her role as Tina in Tony-n-Tina’s Wedding.

“Miss Personality”, as Ryan Seacrest dubbed her in the Top 24 of American Idol (Season 8), left an impression on America and the judges with her vocals, eclectic outfits and fanny-packs. Jackie was also selected as a top twelve finalist to compete on Bravo TV’s songwriting series, Platinum Hit, hosted by Jewel and Kara DioGuardi.

As a singer/songwriter, Jackie has shared the stage with such acts as Jason Mraz, Sara Bareilles, Katy Perry and others. Touring for years, Jackie has brought her love of guitar and ukulele to audiences across America. Lisa Brenner Bio:

Lisa Brenner is a Los Angeles-based writer with a Springsteen obsession and a fear of dirigibles. She joined KPCC public radio as breaking news reporter in December 2011. Prior to that she led content direction for a top L.A. city blog as Co-Editor of LAist, where she’d been the Music Editor years earlier.

Brenner has written and produced arts, culture and news content for a number of print and online publications including MTV, Glamour and LA. com where she served as Music Editor and Managing Editor of the entertainment and lifestyle website.

She worked on the 20th Century Fox studio lot in creative licensing for Fox Music publishing where she co-created the department’s first online store and mined the musical catalogue of film scores, TV themes and soundtrack gems. Prior to Fox, she coordinated large-scale film, commercial and music video productions.

Brenner earned a B.A. from Pennsylvania State University in Media Studies with an emphasis in film and television. Her dad says she majored in watching TV. He’s not wrong.

I went to see one of my favorite artists of all time of ever in the universe ever, Patty Griffin, at the John Anson Ford Amphitheater in 2003. The venue is literally blown out of the side of a mountain. The backdrop of this outdoor stage is all jagged rock, and rock steps and huge trees. Breathtaking.

Then i started seeing ANY show there just so i could be in that space. Under the stars. In that community. So beautiful.

It was then that I visualized myself playing there. My dream venue. I wanted to be able to look at the visual every day.

So i ripped a piece of looseleaf paper out of my notebook and grabbed a dull sharpie. (not my choice writing implement, just the first thing i grabbed in a moment of instant inspiration)

I drew (you should excuse the expression, as i am THE worst art artist)… i drew a stick figure version of myself holding a stick figure guitar with a stick figure Marquis that said, “Jackie Tohn – Live at the FORD Amphitheater”. I drew some puffy trees and clouds and taped it to the front door of my house; the inside of the Front Door, of course. Had it been on the outside, inclement weather would have destroyed my masterpiece in minutes.

I have relocated residences twice with this piece of sharpied looseleaf paper in tow.

Now, on August 21st 2011, 4 days before our birthday, I will be playing the FORD AMPHITHEATER.
I WILL BE PLAYING ON THE STAGE OF MY DREAM VENUE.

Join me on this monumental day. It’s an ineffable feeling to have a super specific dream and have it come true. I should do more of that.

My friend Phil Mucci is a ridiculous director. We have always wanted to work together… and…. it… finally…. happened. What you’re about to watch is an example of what can happen when some friends get together with a little bit of gas money and a whole lotta love.

First Phil scouted about a hundred locations. Every time he did a scout, he would edit me a mock video featuring all the new locations he found to the tune of this song. I would get emails from Phil at 5:36 am saying, “headed downtown to see what’s crack-a-lackin’. Shazam!” or “Two latest scouts for you, nice Boss Lady”. Being ironically called Nice Boss Lady is the BEST. You guys should totally try it.

He even made a CGI version of his brainchild (before we started filming) to give me an idea of what the video would look like.

We woke up at 4:55 AM approximately ten times over the course of a month to get the beautiful LIGHT that only happens at SUNRISE. We had to keep insanely close tabs on the weather because we were doing Natural Light every day. Phil would wake up some days we were planning to shoot and text me that it was cloudy – that i should go back to bed. And go back to bed, I would.

It was tough waking up that early but with emails from Phil like, “Don’t hate me Jackie Tohn. I feel pain. Hate the cruel and indifferent universe. It feels nothing.” (hahahahahaha), it became easier every time.
