Sunday night at 6:00 we will have an opportunity to view the movie, An Appalachian Dawn, which tells the story of Manchester, Kentucky. This film was the inspiration behind the March to the Gap this fall and the current prayer effort for Campbell County. It is an inspiring story of how the Holy Spirit moved in local churches enabling them to make a positive difference int he community. The community was transformed from one of hopelessness when the presence of God descended and transformed Manchester into the City of Hope. Let us pray for similar revival in healing in our own community.

Bring a pot of soup or tray of sandwiches and join us from 6-8 in the Family Life Center Jan. 22.

Thank God For Birthdays. With my birthday I have time to reflect upon the year prior and look forward to the year ahead. I have seen a lot of miraculous things this year. I have watched my church, member by member, recognize a need for service, and act on that recognition. I have witnessed the Lord opening doors for Jacksboro United Methodist Church for growth, mission, discipleship, and encouragement within. I have never witnessed such a spirit of revival in all of my years as a Christian. I thank God for it. I also thank Dave Grant our beloved pastor for his huge part in administering and supporting this movement.

Also, as confirmation of this spiritual movement, I have been blessed to be a part of a few multidenominational efforts this year. These are folks who have also recognized that denominationalism distracts us from our core mission, winning disciples and serving our community. They have recognized that we are losing the citizens of our community to the bonds of the world. They see the effects of addiction, abuse, brokenness in our greater family. They are willing to spend time to deal with it. I am glad to be a part of it, thank you God.

One such effort has been the construction of a house for two disabled women. These women are wheelchair bound, they had no roof, and no outside wall on their original house. They also had no one to call on. Thanks to the efforts of Pastor Allen Shepherd of New Life Ministry and his ability to organize over a dozen churches. We were able to rebuild their house. They are living in it as of last Saturday.

Another example is the collaboration of Youth Ministers from the community’s local churches. Thanks to Joey St. John for acting on his vision for a community wide youth effort, through this action we are organizing youth events that one church would not be able to handle. Through the strengths of individual churches working together we can (through the power of the Holy Spirit) reap a great harvest. Thank You Jesus! We have had a large youth event which ministered to (by my estimate) somewhere around 1,000 kids in our community. Thank you for your efforts Brian Miracle. Looking forward to the year ahead, we are planning a “Disciple Now” event for the community youth. This will be a huge effort, and will benefit our youth in the same manner.

Finally, and more dynamically, I have witnessed the Spirit of God poured out on the elders of the churches in our community and beyond. There is a prayer effort in multiple locations in the Campbell County area. One such prayer effort has been meeting on Tuesdays, where I have seen people coming at an increasing rate, to pray for our community. They pray for our pastors, Lay leadership, politicians, Civil Servants, drug addictions, Broken Families, and Grandparents who are struggling while raising their grandchildren. It is a miraculous happening wrapped in a spirit of revival (Hallelujah). There is a Prayer March for the Harrogate community on November 6 for very similar purposes. I hope to see a lot of my friends there. I hope to make friends there.

Above all I hope to see that community healed through God’s grace and mercies.

I am having a happy Birthday, because I am blessed to be a part of all of it in this time. Thanks to my family (Jessica and Eli) for your support. God Bless You all.

Christian Life Club begins this Wednesday. CLC will be a fun time of singing, learning and playing for kids age 4 through elementary school. CLCers will work toward badges in 9 areas of Christian growth. Come and bring a friend or two!

We have a very active schedule for the next two months. I always enjoy the events at our church during the Fall of the year. I hope it will be enjoyable for you too.

1. Wednesday August 31 @ 5:30pm: Movie night with God's Awesome Kids. Pastor Dave Grant will provide the movie.

2. Sunday, September 4 at 6:00pm: Baptism at the Mays' swimming pool with dinner

3. *Friday, September 16 after the Cougars football game: Indiana Avenue Baptist church in partnership with the Campbell County Tennessee Youth Leaders Association will be hosting a Fifth Quarter. All Youth are Welcome!

4. Saturday, September 17 @ 5:00pm: Hay Ride at Cove Lake State Park. We will meet for fellowship at Shelter #1. A shuttle will be provided to the area where the hay ride will be.

5. *Friday Oct. 7 after the Cougars Football Game: A local Church (TBA) in partnership with the Campbell County Tennessee Youth Leaders Association will be hosting a Fifth Quarter. All Youth are Welcome!

6. Saturday, October 8 at 9:00am to 2:00pm: Fall Bazaar! Join JUMC for fun, food, fellowship, food, door prizes, food.

7. Friday October 21 after the Cougars Football Game: Jacksboro United Methodist Church in partnership with the Campbell County Tennessee Youth Leaders Association will be hosting a Fifth Quarter for the youth. All youth are welcome!

Cottage Meetings

The Gospel is robust enough to speak afresh to locations in every time and place and God's Spirit is powerful enough to invade and redeem every location to claim every place for the glory of his name. End of summer pool party

We had a great time this year with our end of the summer pool party. Nearly 20 of our kids came and had a great time. It is my experience that kids feel that they never get to swim enough and the adults feel that the kids have swam too long. It is a never ending battle.

However at this pool party we did have success. Another child has been added to the Lambs Book of Life. This child has been welcomed into a relationship with the Lord. Let us as church members make her and her family feel welcome.

Remember in Matthew 19:14 Jesus said:

"Suffer litttle children and forbid them not to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven."
(KJV)

Previous to this verse the disciples rebuked the children, which is the reason why Jesus made this statement. Let us (the adults) make sure we do everything we can for these wonderful children.

Be Still

The weather this season has maintained a destructive pattern to say the least. Some have suffered property damage and in some parts of the country lives have been lost. Since Cain and Abel were on the earth tragedy has been a part of the living experience. I can testify personally that when personal tragedy occurs, anger and confusion ensues.

However Psalms 46:10 says "Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth." This portion of the Psalm of course reminds us to sit quietly and realize that God is in control.

It is my hope that if you have turmoil in your life this scripture brings you comfort. I am also reminded of Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

Not only is God in control but he loves us and has wonderful plans for us.

Thank you to the United Methodist churches of Caryville and Jacksboro. We have enjoyed serving you.

The ministries that we have worked on together have been exciting. We have learned from one another. Those skills will be carried into every ministry to which God leads both you and our family.

Who can forget the first free movie night? The Wednesday night kids program or the special child friendly Christmas eve service or the UMW meetings? Most of all, who can forget the love and kindness that you have shown to our family for the past few years? We won't.

My family will continue to pray for the United Methodist churches of Caryville and Jacksboro - for your churches. That God may grant you with fruitfulness in His service and abundant faith.

It is always too early to depart from an appointment. But, we believe that God has delivered you into good hands. Just as firmly we believe that God will equip and empower you as you move into the next level of ministry. We are looking forward to hearing the best for you in the upcoming years.

May God continue to hold us all in the palm of His hand.

Here are some photos of storm damage that I personally took. Allie and I drove through Glade Spring, VA on our return trip from D.C.

Photos cannot convey the extreme devastation of the area. Everywhere you look on either side of the interstate is wreckage from homes and businesses. The destruction goes as far as you can see.

Other photos were taken in McMinn Co. when I had to drive through there. We weren't able to get as many pictures of the storm damage. The damage is intense. It underscores the need for quick assistance.

Bishop Swanson addresses Holston Conference on storm needs

Almost all of us have been touched by the storms that swept through the south in April. The need for storm relief teams and supplies is great. In this video, Bishop Swanson of the Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church tells us what we can do and how we can help our communities in the hardest hit areas.

Never before has the Holston Conference seen such devastation. Jacksboro UMC already has a couple of buckets and a few supplies. Let's see what else we can do. Together, we can do this!

Jacksboro UMC Youth (Inspiration through Music)

The "youth leader" title comes with responsibilities. Finding ways to inspire the children to discover the Lord Jesus and fall in love with him is primarily one of those. When Jessica and I were given the privilege of representing this youth group, we were challenged in this regard. I personally had no experience in the matter. All we had was a love for God and a feeling of dedication toward these wonderful children. This past year we have been trying different techniques to reach the children in education of the word. This came with some success. However I have observed great strides in the children’s interest since we have been singing. To me, the introduction of a guitar and a few songs was way too obvious. In other words, the thought never occurred to me.

Three weeks ago, I brought my guitar and a couple of the praise songs I sang in high school. The songs were “Lord I Lift Your Name On High” and “As The Deer”. Yes I realize I am telling my age when I mention these titles. However I knew this and figured the children would chastise me for being old and then tell me the names of some new songs. This didn’t happen and the kids responded especially well to “Lord I Lift Your Name on High”.

Earlier one of our youth made a vow not to sing. This particular youth is challenged and very self conscious about contributing to activities that makes one stand out. I have labored hard to make this individual feel comfortable and loved as did Jessica and the rest of the volunteer staff. Once we (the youth and I) sang a song or two this wonderful child approached me and asked if she could see the song sheet and sing with me. After singing she loved the song so much that we sing and play “Lord I Lift Your name on High” as soon as she comes in on Wednesday night. One would think that I could play the song better by now. She also took the lyrics home with her so she could sing to her mother. How wonderful is it that music has touched this child such that she is now expressing her love for singing to the Lord with her folks.

This is not the only success story. There are more. However more holistically, the kids sound great and have expressed interest in performing in church. Keep in mind some of these children do not normally attend our church service (or any other). Ms. Miles has been especially helpful with helping prepare the children to sing at some unknown time after Easter. I hope to see everyone there when this occurs.

Wednesday Night Youth
