Horseback rides, fun for the whole family~

Jackson Outfitter’s Trail Rides has been enjoying a summer in the saddle. We started taking families with children as young as 5 yrs old (depending on ability to listen and follow directions) on horseback trail rides and it has been fun! Giving kids a chance to ride and learn to love horses is so rewarding. We do pony the younger kids so that they can actually enjoy the scenery and the ride without being nervous. Raising kids on horses~

We raised our own kids on horses and understand that they need to feel safe and confident. And that is just what we have been able to share with these wonderful families. As we ride along, I get bombarded with some fun questions and comments. I believe my favorite so far this summer was from a 5 yr old girl. She asked about running the horses on our horseback trail rides and we explained why we don’t when out with guests. Her response was “I have a need for speed!” and my response back was “me too girl, me too!” Kids have such inquisitive minds and thirst for knowledge. I really love being able to teach a little and laugh a lot.

Here at Jackson Outfitters near Telluride Colorado, we pride ourselves in matching the horse and rider for each trail ride. Not every horse is the right fit for every rider. Our stock is well seasoned taking riders of all levels in easy to extremely difficult terrain and keeping them safe. But horses have personalities and some just don’t click with you as well as others may.

Someone once said, the outside of a horse is good for the inside of man. Horses can sense your emotions and can reflect those right at you. Sometimes you like what you see and sometimes you don’t. Having well rounded horses who have been exposed to the world can really help to build the confidence of a novice rider, build on the horseman or woman you currently are, or even take you to the top in the world of performance. However, they sometimes need the right rider to build their confidence and trust.

Our horses are not trained in any certain discipline (reining, roping, etc…) as they typically are involved in trail rides or packing gear into the mountains. They are exposed to things that some performance horses will never see. They need to be able to keep a calm head when things get a little hairy or stressful. We build a reliable mount for you to relax and enjoy your trail ride while seeing some of the most majestic views Southwest Colorado has to offer.

A Little About Us

My husband Roy has been riding horses his entire life. I started riding about 28 yrs ago. We have had many horses over the years and last year we purchased 2 mules. They are quite different than a horse to handle, and very entertaining! Roy and I raised 2 of our 3 kids to have the same love for horses that we do. They help us when they are available and love being part of the family business.

Today we got a few of our herd new shoes and hauled them home to the high country to start getting them ready for use. Owning horses most of our lives has been exciting to say the least. As seasons change so do the horses attitudes, fur, and ability to handle situations that arise. We have added a few amazing horses to the string and are excited to see how they perform. Solid, well rounded horses are extremely important to us. We take the time to put enough rides on them, expose them to the elements, wildlife, and even simple things like plastic bags, dogs, chickens, children, etc…. This to helps them be ready for any situation on guided horseback rides.

Every Year feels like starting over. Not only do the horses need a tune up but so do the guides. A horse is the reflection of the rider. So if our horses seem off, it can sometimes be due to the attitude of the rider. This makes it very important for us to work on our own attitude and horsemanship on a regular basis. This winter my wife and head wrangler Milissa spent some time learning to barrel race and expanding her horsemanship knowledge. Time in the saddle was just what she needed.

With the spring season moving fast and still getting snow up here at 9,000 ft in elevation, we have had constant delays on getting things in motion. These next 2 weeks we will be getting our new tack container, going through all of our tack for safety and repairs, getting our new hitching rails and riding out as often as we can. Sometimes riding with extra horses in tow just to make sure they get the time and exercise they need.

We will have guided horseback trail rides available as of June 1, 2023. These rides will start within 45 minutes of Telluride, Ridgway and Ouray Colorado on the beautiful Red Dog Ranch and venture out into the Uncompahgre National forest. Jackson Outfitters is now booking hunts for Spring 2018 Merriam’s Turkey Hunts!

Growing up on the Western Slope of Colorado, always out in forest BLM, I unfortunately never saw Turkeys until around 1996, when the Merriam’s Turkey was re-introduced to the region. Since then that population has practically exploded, providing a wonderful experience for success in harvesting a trophy Merriam’s Tom Turkey. Along with the exciting experience this provides for turkey hunters in Colorado, it also helps to control the growing population.

Please contact us about our Colorado trophy hunts today. We have private properties and BLM in game management units 53, 63, 521, 52 and 411. These units produce quality mule deer bucks each year with several scoring over 180 inches. It does require several preference points to draw in some of these units, however we can hook you up with private property owners whom receive land vouchers each year.
