Small town politics can be messy. It sometimes entangles friends and family pulling in opposite directions; and the players at the table are often wearing multiple hats, their public roles conflicting with private positions.
Such a conflict appears to be happening in the ongoing move to recall the mayor and one city council member in the City of Hoschton.
Continue reading "BUFFINGTON: Denney should recuse herself in recall decisions"

An ordinance change will loosen restrictions on alcoholic beverage consumption outside of businesses on city property in Jefferson.

The Jefferson City Council voted 5-0 Sept. 9 during a three-hour work session to allow for the consumption of alcohol in front of businesses on city sidewalks and rights of ways for businesses that lack sufficient space for an outdoor drinking area. This move will allow those businesses to serve alcohol in specified areas. The council will review the ordinance change at its Sept. 23 voting meeting and make possible tweaks to the amendment.

At the end of 2018, the county had unassigned reserves of $9.5 million in its general fund, topping 23 percent of its annual expenses. Accounting rules say that local governments should have between 15-25 percent in reserves.
