Still love me some NFL. Josh McDaniels kicked Bill Belichick’s Patriots right out of Denver while Matt Ryan picked apart a supposedly stout San Francisco defense. Oh, and Peyton Manning is still awesome. I wrap up week five in the NFL in the Final Drive!

(1-4) Cleveland Browns 6
(1-4) Buffalo Bills 3

Ugliest. Game. Ever. Derek Anderson goes 2 for 13 in a WIN. Mangini should have stuck with Brady Quinn. In Buffalo, things could be even worse after signing T.O. in the offseason. Dick Jauron will lose his job during this season. You can almost lock it in.

(3-2) Dallas Cowboys 26
(0-5) Kansas City Chiefs 20

Wade Philips needs to thank Tony Romo and Miles Austin for saving his job. Austin’s 10 catches for 250 yards was a Cowboy franchise record and could not have come at a more significant moment with Roy Williams on the bench. While winless, Kansas City is at least keeping things close.

Continue reading "Joes Final Drive Week 5"

Someone finally looked like a rookie quarterback; things are going south in Tennessee, and some guy named Brett Favre made headlines. I wrap up week four in the NFL with the Final Drive!

(3-1) New England Patriots 27
(3-1) Baltimore Ravens 21

Okay, so has everyone gotten the “don’t touch or breathe on Tom Brady’s legs” memo? Ray Lewis, you can complain all you want about bad penalties or ball spots; it still doesn’t change that fact that your defense let Tom Brady get fourteen points in the second quarter. You’re 3-1; it wasn’t the AFC Championship game. Man up and take the loss.

Continue reading "Joes Final Drive Week 4"

(I've also posted this on my blog at FanNation.com).

It's been an interesting NFL Sunday thus far, so I had the urge to get my two cents in on the day's events. First thing that comes to my mind, it's going right into this post...

-New York football is riding high, as both the Jets and Giants have improved to 3-0. The Giants had a walk in the park against the laughable Tampa Bay Bucs, but the Jets had to work extremely hard for their victory against the desperate Tennessee Titans. Rex Ryan's boys (and my favorite team) certainly earned the win, but Tennessee's wide receiver drops had a little something to do with it. Kerry Collins' statistics were very misleading today; he actually played well.

-My preseason predictions suggested a bit of a surprising season for the Washington Redskins in the NFC East, but the surprise is how BAD they are. Congrats to the Detroit Lions on breaking their seemingly endless losing streak against the 'Skins. Jim Zorn's crew had the opportunity to steal away the victory in the late fourth, but Detroit held its ground. Washington simply doesn't have the weapons on the offensive side of the ball. Clinton Portis played banged up but didn't provide much.

Continue reading "NFL Week 3 Notes and Commentary"

What? A life coach? What exactly is a life coach you may be asking...well, simply put, a life coach is a person that is ALWAYS in the corner of the player whether they win or loose; on and off the field. You see, these players are thrust into a whole new environment called "the NFL" and they come from all walks of life. Who can they really trust in this business? Their agent? Their coach? The real answer is maybe they can trust all of those people or entities, however they still need that trusting ear that can share personal one on one time with them to help them accomplish goals and move to that next step/level in their career and even in their personal life.

Coaching is a rarely new profession. It actually was found and formulated through sports..."sports coaching." The transformation from college to the NFL is often overwhelming to players, however they are expected to

Continue reading "DO THE JAGUAR PLAYERS NEED A LIFE COACH"

We know that football, or should I say American football, has been growing for years. It's just that the mainstream media does not cover American style football as much as, say, the NCAA or NFL.
And since Americans don't really realize the game is being played in other countries, my thoughts revolved around one question: "What foreigners have played American football professionally?"

Denmark
Morten Andersen (born in Copenhagen, Denmark) is the all-time leading scorer in the NFL with two different teams (New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons). In college, Anderson played for the Michigan State Spartans. He set several kicking records, including a Big 10 Conference record: a 63-yard field goal against Ohio State. In 1981, Anderson was named an All-American.

Continue reading "Foreigners in NFL History"

Gone are the days of Shaq Harris' incompetent personnel decisions, enter the new era with Gene Smith,
groomed by Wayne Weaver, and his new Jaguar order. This off-season marked the departure of perhaps the team leaders on both sides of the ball. The torch has been passed from Fred Taylor to Maurice Jones Drew, it is
now MJD's turn to be the centerpiece to the Jaguar offense, accompanied by wholesale changes to the rest of the unit, David Garrard is sure to lead a fresh attack this campaign. Longtime defensive leader Mike Peterson is

Continue reading "THE STATE OF THE JAGUARS"

During Fred Taylor’s first four years in Jacksonville, he missed 24 of 64 games. Viewed as a fixture on the sideline instead of on the field, fans labeled the former Florida Gator running back “Fragile Fred.”

Those same fans don’t call Taylor fragile anymore. After recovering from a 2001 groin injury that knocked him out of 14 games, Taylor missed just 12 games in seven seasons, amassing 7,801 yards.

I haven’t heard catcalls of “Lame Laurence” or “Mending Maroney,” but the New England locals aren’t high on Laurence Maroney because he missed 18 of 48 games. They are bothered that a running back that doesn’t show toughness while running the ball spends so much time off the field.

There’s no denying Maroney’s talent. His strong finish to the 2007 season raised everyone’s hopes for 2008. And with Corey Dillion retired and replaced by career back-up Sammy Morris, the path was cleared for Laurence to reach new heights.

Continue reading "Follow Freds Footsteps Laurence"

Let's take a look at the top 3 qb sleepers for the 2009 season:

Note: All stats and rankings are based on the following:
20 yards passing=1 point
10 yards rushing= 1 point
Td's= 6 points
Fumble/Int= -2 points

3. David Garrard
08: 3620 passing yards 15 passing td's 13 INT's 322 yards rushing 2 rushing td's

This guy always seems like a perennial sleeper. He finally came out of his shell a little bit last season, passing for 1111 more yards than the previous season, though he did play in 4 more games. Last year he was the 11th best qb, and yet is consistently ranked lower than 15 for the upcoming season. He should be able to crack the top 10 qb's this year given the addition of aging, yet talented, receiver Torry Holt. In addition, Garrard is effective at creating points with his legs, rushing for 322 yards and 2 td's last season. What keeps Garrard from being a top tier qb (besides his lack of receivers), is his lack of passing td's. For a man with 3600+ yards passing, 15 td's is a very small number. Cassel and Pennington passed for nearly identical yardage last season, and they had 21 td's and 19 td's respectively. If Garrard could ever pass for td's like he did in 07' (when he had 18 td's in only 12 starts) and have the health he did in 08', he could easily eclipse 20 passing td's. While I'm not so convinced of this that I will make him my starting qb, Garrard will make a terrific backup with the potential to catapult himself into a starting fantasy gig.

Continue reading "3 quarterback sleepers in the 09 fantasy football season"

The word of the day is rebuilding. rebuilding is when a team, in a sense, starts with a clean slate. it is most often characterized by releasing players, acquiring new, mostly younger, players and often involves coaching changes. several sources include members of the jaguars staff, bloggers, and even nfl.com have implied or directly stated that the jags are in a rebuilding stage. this is supported by the fact that some keys veterans have been cut (i.e fred taylor, paul spicer) and that younger players are being added to the roster. this means that as fans we must remain patient as our players begin to grow and develop into a team in title contension. that is great news but i don't really like the concept of a team trying to rebuild. when a team states that they're rebuilding, they're telling the world that they are lowering their standards for the next couple of years. they're saying that they will be satisfied with a 9-7 year and maybe make the playoffs only to be eliminated in the first round. i'm not saying that i wont be satisfied with that. it's better than last year. what i'm saying is that we can't aim that low. if Jack Del Rio was in an interview or at a press conference it would be better for him to say that they "...are trying a new approach" then saying that they're rebuilding. but all in all i'm excited for a new year and another chance for the cats to bring home the lombardi. maybe thats just me.
