Fairbanks purchased the hunting lodge in the San Ysidoro Canyon that would later become Pickfair as a wedding gift for Pickford in 1919. The couple spent 5 years working with architect Wallace Neff to renovate the lodge into a 4-story, 42-room estate complete with stables, tennis courts, servant quarters, multiple garages and a lengthy list of features for their guests, who would number in the hundreds over the next few decades. The Greystone Mansion boasts a list of film credits few actors can claim. This 46,000-square-foot Tudor-style estate-turned-city-park was built in 1928. It has been featured in dozens of films and television productions, with its descending staircase often taking top billing.

Originally, the photogenic one-time residence was built as a gift for the son of oil tycoon Edward L. Doheny, for his son “Ned” Doheny, Jr. The younger Doheny died at Greystone only a few months after the home building was completed, and his widow sold the estate to Chicago industrialist Henry Crown, who rented it out to movie studios.

Later, Crown tried to sell the estate in subdivided lots, but the city of Beverly Hills stepped in, bought the property and leased it to the American Film Institute for $1 per year in exchange for a major renovation, and eventually named it a city park. Paul R. Williams and Beverly Hills Architecture

A study of the architectural styles represented in the Beverly Hills real estate market would not be complete without including the work of Paul R. Williams (1894-1980). Not only did Williams design homes for Frank Sinatra, Barbara Stanwyck, Bert Lahr, and Lucille Ball, he also designed over 2,000 private homes and several public buildings throughout the area.

Williams’ architectural mark seems to be everywhere, from the Saks Fifth Avenue department store in Beverly Hills to the Los Angeles County Courthouse. Williams was also an integral part of the team that designed the iconic, futuristic Theme Building at Los Angeles International Airport in 1961.

Many of his private home designs can be seen in the Holmby Hills neighborhood, including the current residence of Barron Hilton. A History of Hotel Bel Air

In October 2011, Hotel Bel Air reopened after a two year construction project, but the history stretches back more than half a century. Soon after Alphonso E. He also closed the stables and put in an oval pool in the exact location of the original riding ring.

In the early days, the hotel attracted the legends of Hollywood glamour -- Grace Kelly, Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor. As the city has grown up, so has the hotel, with major renovations done over the years.
