Happy Valentine’s Day to ya!

I hope you’re off to a wonderful day! I myself…nothing to major planned..nothing until tonight. I’ll be making Chinese Food and then cannoli for dessert…mmm, yummy!

Hi!! How’s every one? Sorry if we did not have any freebie for you last week. Amy and I were both sick, so our freebie fairy dust is kinda low. I just had a week of not feeling well and being too tired to even lift a finger. I’m really thankful Amy covered my freebie slot last week, giving you your weekly dose of JDS freebie. :) This week, I give you not just one, but 2!!! freebies! Yay!! A couple of weeks ago I showed you how to selectively erase part of your element or paper to get a neat layered look. I used the eraser tool, which I admit isn’t my erasing tool of choice. Whenever possible I prefer non-destructive editing, because I can change things later more easily. So, this week I’m going to show you how to “erase” using a layer mask. I use masks for all sorts of things, though, such as erasing part of an element or cropping a photo. I’m going to use a very simple example – making one of those cool “peek-through” papers. To make a layer mask, select the layer you want to mask (erase) and click on the “vector mask” icon at the bottom of the layers pallette. It’s the one that looks like a circle inside a rectangle. Now you’ll have a box to the right of the thumbnail on the key layer in the layers pallette.

You can see that I have two papers layered in PS. Now I’m going to make a “hole” on the top layer. The way that layer masks work is that for any pixel that is black on the mask, the corresponding pixel in the layer will be erased. White pixels on the mask will be visable on the layer and gray pixels on the mask will be faded on the layer. I’m going to “paint” an area of black on the mask that will correspond with the area of the paper that I want to erase. First, I click on the layer mask to make sure it’s selected. Next, I chose a 1000 px solid round brush and made sure the color selected is black. Then, all I have to do is click the brush on the layout where I want the hole. Ta-da!

You can see the black circle on the layer mask thumbnail and the “hole” in the paper. Cool, huh? You can use any of the shape tools to make a layer mask. I used a brush in the example, but you could use a rectangle tool or the pen tool or one of the other shape tools. And the beauty of the layer mask is that if you don’t like what you did, you can just paint over it with white and it will erase it! And, while I know and love the “undo” feature in PS, I really appreciate being able to change my mind many steps later without having to undo everything in between.

And that’s it. It’s a pretty simple technique, but one that has made my scrapbooking a lot easier!
