Yes, I love Toshiro Mifune in the classic “Yojimbo,” A film that is totally funny, but also a morality play. It is also the exact plot of the Classic Sergio Leone – Clint Eastwood Spaghetti Western “For a Fistful of Dollars” — True homage to the source, acting, and impact. But that is not the Yojimbo I am talking about here.

I am talking about a super useful utility I have installed on my Mac — Yojimbo from BareBones Software.

When I need to find a file, I always use Apple’s finder, but sometimes, that doesn’t work: The keywords I’m typing are not in the document, and I can’t remember any exact phrase in the document. All I can remember is “It’s a receipt dated January 2″ — Apple’s find just doesn’t know about keywords for my documents. So I use Yojimbo. If It is any file that is important at all, I will save it into Yojimbo, which cheerfully accepts most any file ore even a hastily typed cut and paste document. Yojimbo allows me to add keywords to it – later I can find the note by those keywords.

Yojimbo is my refuge of last choice: if a file is really important for me to find later, or is a transient page from the web, that I’ll never find again, I just put it in Yojimbo and plug in a few keywords. And I breath easier.

Adam, Our economy is in trouble. We have widespread unemployment, big banks and businesses are failing, the world is losing respect for us, terrorists hate us, and we don’t trust each other.

You are sure right about the overwhelming power of the “invisible hand” to straighten out the bumps in the road of commerce! This bump is a big one, and that “hand” is needing to get to work right away. Soon, we hope.

The forces that drive the hand have, up to this point, pushed our commerce and economy into this tailspin of a fearful, decrepit society. Are we in a tailspin? Are we decrepit? Our friends Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh would say that this is the time to let that hand go to work and PROVE that we are not a decrepit society.

And if we are decrepit, has the “hand” of business helped us lose those sensible values, just as it has changed our values about Christmas, or any of a zillion things that business pays Madison Avenue to advocate. Yes, “the hand” even works there. And the hand looks like Glen Beck as he laments the loss of values and the fact that they are trampled on so often.

The hand is working, Sean, Glenn, Rush, It can’t stop. Adam did not say that the hand was optional, nor very quick, nor was guided very well — at least in the short term. But the forces are generated in the marketplace. And the landlord of the marketplace is the Government, always has been.

So, Government mandates are simply the price that the landlord sets on your tent, Mr. Corporation. The Government is a vendor for each and every business. A huge customer, too, one that can make the difference between profit and shuttered doors. So most big businesses simply treat the government as a vendor/customer: We hire a salesman, called a Lobbyist, and negotiate with the vendor: “You want us to fill out form XXX for each shipment? You want us to sell to only “approved” customers? No problem, lets just see about a tax credit to offset the costs of implementing that, OK, 75% tax reduction? a Deal! Shake. We just factor that into our bottom line and go ahead.”

So government is no different than any customer, at least from a “Market Forces” perspective. It’s just that the “Government as customer” may have radically different requirements than the other forces of the hand. That’s business. That’s government. Live with it, Rush, the rest of us do.

But, Adam, you have really hit the wall on this one! We have huge problems that will take huge amounts of cooperation and we can no longer simply “buy” that kind of co-operation. And our “trust” factor is really weak out there, Sean. I know you have an idea or two on that subject.

Internal distrust. That’s our achilles heel. Our friends at Fox are pointing out huge numbers of people who don’t trust America. Any liberal simply does not trust America, and is simply not to be trusted. That’s a whole lot of people to distrust! And I bet they distrust right back!

Joblessness: Nothing eats our will like long term unemployment, knowing our hard-won skills are useless.

International terrorism. That takes international co-operation.

Global emissions: That takes international co-operation.

Global economy in a shambles: If we want OUR economic solution to be the one that the world adapts, we had better make our economic solution be the one that WORKS, right Rush, Glenn, Sean?.

So, here is the request from your customer: us, the citizens: Restore Trust here in the USA. Get rid of the endless searches, barricades, check points! These are badges worn by Governments who do not trust the population.
—- The population will not trust back. So business, Government. Earn our trust. We spend better that way. It’s one of our forces.

By the way, Adam, have your hand start working on these very real forces in the market place.

Let it get to work on the Global Emissions and climate thing. And no more bogus “cigarette cancer” research that’s cooked up by the Simpson’s Quack Doctor and sold to the highest bidder.
And get to work on the terrorism thing. So they hate our freedoms? The last X-ray check-point I had to go through to check my Federal Income Tax or Social Security, or even take a trip did not make me feel free. I’m not feeling it, Sean.
And get to work on the Global Economy: They can’t trust us anymore, they are even talking about dumping the dollar. Business, you have already taken the baby step to Global Citizen. We need you to do better than that, businessman, We need you to make the leap to Global Statesman.

So fix it: It’s just business. And Business is Business.

I have been a Link Referral member for quite some time, and have several sites there. My latest, tweeparty.com is a gateway to twitter. It’s really a Twitter Power Tool, that is totally free.

My goal is to have Tweeparty on the screens of women from ages 13 to 35 and beyond. You know, the tweety, chatty kind. A person can gather tweets all day long, multiplexing all those womanly tasks, and still keep up with all the latest and respond with just a few clicks to the juiciest morsels that bubble to the top of interest.

So, when I see all those hits coming in from LinkReferral.com, I figure — even though it takes me a good hour or so to go through the linkreferral sites, and review those few gems of sites, like thewozone, I mostly find there dead links and parked domains — worse than dead.

I do it because I believe I’m getting quality views, because I really believe my site is a quality, unique, and incredibly useful web application for tweeters, from novices to power users.

So when I look at my Google Analytics at the traffic from LinkReferral, I am amazed to find that the average time-on-site is 11 seconds. That isn’t even time to let the page load! But the Google also tells me that the average time on my site for a new visitor is 1:50 — Ten times as long –almost two minutes! So it ain’t the site here that’s at fault, it’s the visitor! Lets summarize that: a Linkreferral visit is worth 1/10th of a real visit.

Now I have gotten some really high quality reviews (and a bunch of junk, too) so I know there are a range of visitors. But you won’t convince me that the average Linkreferral visitor is very useful.

So what are your visitation times from Linkreferral.com?

Let me know, OK?

I picked up a copy of Howard Ruff’s good book “How to Prosper During the Coming Bad Years in the 21st Century” — I’ve been enjoying economic bad years long before it was fashionable, and even though I now have company in that enjoyment, I’d rather have prosperity in my financial stbility, not just my emotional stability.

On finding a random chapter — “Sin Tax” Howard Ruff refers to President John Adams’ statement that our constitution is unable to work for everyone. Specifically John Adams wrote a letter to the officers of the First Brigade of the Third Division of the Militia of Massachusetts on 10/11/1798:

… we have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge, or gallantry, would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.

John Ruff goes on to explain that this body of “moral and religious people” was the essence of our attitude to gain prosperity from revolutionary times up to our greatest hours as a nation. The echoes of philosopher Edmund Burke support this — “Men of intemperate habits cannot be free, their passions form their fetters.”

Succinctly this summarizes the “IT” that Rush Limbaugh, G W Bush and the Republican conservative base holds dear and is exactly what Sarah Palin says to the “real america” with that canny wink of hers. The liberals don’t get “IT,” because the Democrat’s tent is full of people with intemperate habits. They can’t get “IT” because at the core they are “unbridled by morality and religion.”

No wonder the NeoCons can play fast and loose with inflaming fear in the American public: Because the Constitution is too weak to contain us lesser beings — we do not wear the bridle of morality and religion. And therefore our ability to be governed by the Constitution is null and void. We Democrats, Greens, Libertarians, Atheists, Wobblies, and who know else are unfit for the US Constitution.

We don’t get “IT.” — That’s where you are wrong.

I would submit that in fact, optical communicationyes, Rush, we do get “IT.” We reject the foolish position of John Adams. It does not take a person of morality to honor the goddess of prudence. It does not take a person of faith to realize that making the world a better place knows no religion.

What we do know is that desperate people do desperate and stupid things.

If you strip the American public of their Constitution, you have stripped them of respect for your ideas and leadership. If you fill the courts with blind followers of John Adams failed ideology, you have stripped the public of respect for the legal system. And if you blind us with false prosperity that is smoke and mirrors instead of true worth, you will reap the smoke of failure.

So here is the question: Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Stephen Colbert — “Do you reject the universal application of the US Constitution to all US Citizens? Do you, like President John Adams, share the failed ideology that the US Constitution is not a universal document, to be enjoyed, respected and worthy of all?”

Because if you reject the universal application of the Constitution, you reject the Constitution. It is your choice. Choose wisely. Wink-wink.

Allstate Insurance has created an eye-moistening, persuasive, thunderbolt of a poem in “Back to Basics” with this inspired advertisement.

The words start with –

A stanza of uncertainty

one of appreciation of basic values

care and protection of those values

Now thats a great combination! It’s timeless but appropriate for now: we are in the sea of uncertainty. Let’s explore the music, the images, the words and even such a subtle thing as the echo of the room.

The music is simple, but hypnotic. It repeats in the manner of Robert Heinlein’s “pepsis” — note well how it goes over and over in your head for days triggering a memory of the message. The transition from solo piano to warm sweet orchestra comes at the end of the first verse and mirrors the verbal transition from thinking of uncertainty to emotional caring for basic values.

The images start cold and hard: Black and White. Stark. Of having to drink water from a fire hydrant. A woman worn by care, wondering about an uncertain future. Long lines for soup and bread: lines full of the camaraderie of stress and deprivation, lines that could end in “sorry, no soup left” for those unfortunate depression era souls.

But during the second and third verses, the scope changes, we see the gallery (as we watch, we sigh in relief, “it’s only a gallery where children are visiting”) and the color comes back into view. There are children and we can identify with them. Either we can be warm parents, or we can imagine that we are the children and the world is a grand place. Either way, it is so much better than we had just a second ago.

The images shift from cold and chilly to the warmth of the sun. But note the warm golden shades of the color: The shades of sunset — the reward of the day: the time spent with hearth and food and family.

Let’s talk about the voice of Dennis Haysbert: James Earl Jones and Morgan Freeman are finally a trio with their “voice from beyond.” Moving, believable, solid and firm as a grassy knoll on a summer afternoon when you can hear the voice of God from the clouds. Haysbert is perfect to deliver this poetic A-bomb about uncertainty, worth and protection.

Even the audio is in alignment with the message: It is very subtle, but the echo of a great hall for the first words are replaced by a more intimate surrounding by the end of the message.

1931…was not exactly a great year to start a business.
But, that’s when Allstate opened its door.
And through the twelve recessions since,
they’ve noticed that after the fear subsides,
a funny thing happens.

People begin enjoying the small things in life.
A home-cooked meal.
Time with loved ones.
Appreciating the things we do have.
The things we can count on.

It’s back to basics.
And the basics are good.
Protect them.
Put them…in good hands.”

This advertisement hit all of the senses: sound, sight, feeling — it has alluded to and activated the cold of a depression day and the warmth of the sunset. And after feeling comes taste and smell –”a home cooked meal” is one of the basics.

And the monologue takes us from bewildered child to protective parent all guided by our wise grandfather, Dennis Haybert — Who tells us to put it in… Good Hands

This review by Jim Hinds is not meant to endorse any product by Allstate Insurance or any other provider — but it is meant to help shape our perceptions of art: a great message that connects with our most intimate needs.

Sex and cheating are Christmas companions.

I am a student of Romance. I dedicate much time to looking into the ways it impacts our lives and how we can enhance it. How it goes wrong and what to do.

So you can imagine me as I’m checking out search volume on the topic of sex, marriages, cheating and divorce on Google trends. Just look at the combination of “sex” and “cheat” over the last several years.

Sex and Cheating are on our minds at Christmas

Imagine my shock and surprise that there is a strong correlation between ’sex’ and ‘cheat’ in search keywords. I’m surprised for two reasons. First is the fact that these searches are, after all, on the internet — and if you are really interested in sex and cheating, you may only find the champagne room on the internet, and you must remember what Chris Rock said: “there is NO SEX in the champagne room” — if you want sex and cheating, it is out in the real world, not the internet. The second, and more important, is that people think of sex and cheating more at the very end of the year. And I’m not the only one: “Holiday intimacies aren’t just an American rite, according to Gabriele Doblhammer of the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock, Germany. Heavy Christmas-New Year’s sex “is characteristic of all Christian cultures in which it has been evaluated,” she and co-researcher Joseph Lee Rogers found.”

Search volume for sex goes up and down on a weekly cycle, with more searches on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. A little week-end nookie, no doubt. That weekly cycle is year long, with some seasonal variation.

Google's keyword trend for 'sex'

There is a huge increase in both, simultaneously, during and just after Christmas. What a strange coincidence! And notice how the increase in ‘cheat’ is huge at this time. It almost looks like an obsession at this supposedly holy time of year! How will Christian religions explain this? Is it OK or holy at this time of the year? Is it a spiritual coincidence or does God work in mysterious ways?

Cheating is big big BIG at Christmas time

OK, so that’s an open question to religious leaders everywhere. What gives???

Wait, there’s more! Look at the peaks for love in this graph: Valentines day in February is when people think of love, and NOT cheating. OK, now this demands another response: Why should we think of love MORE in february rather than at christmas time?

Valentine's day is when we really think of love!

So I’m thinking of moving from Hawaii to Oregon. It will take a lot of convincing, but seeing this view may be a part of that decision!

The air is clean and clear. The hikes are incredible. There are new things to discover around every bend. There are the mountains of the Cascade range, the incredible Oregon Coast. I can’t forget about the hiking at Smith Rock, or the inspiration of Multnomah Falls.

I got to remember to stay warm. And dry — gotta stock up on tactical gear also.

Maybe a visit to Outdoor Oregon may be the best future.

Not too long ago, I wrote a book for mid-life couples to help them re-focus on each other when the kids leave the home and retirement may be around the corner.

That is a critical time in a relationship: a huge percentage of divorces occur at exactly that time. A couple starts out in love, but time changes, values change, attraction changes. The book Romantic Trances is dedicated to the idea that a couple can find common ground and with the help of NLP, can regain the glow and rekindle the romance.

All that is well and good, but I wanted to get it out to the public to see what reception I could get: I’m in the process of re-writing it now!

I would not have been able to do that unless I got about 100 copies out into the hands of people so that I could get feedback on what worked and what didn’t.

Simply put, I wanted a way to print and bind an attractive paperback that I could do with simple materials. I figured out a unique and novel way to print a book using a duplexing printer and a therma-bind unit. The printer was a Samsung unit that had a price tag under $500. The therma-bind unit cost less than $100. I have since graduated to a Brother color laser with an even lower cost per page.

How I was able to do this involved a rather tricky way to shuffle the pages front and back and side to side so that one run through the printer would create two paperbacks. I would tack the outer edge with hot-melt glue, wrap a glossy bookcover around the pages and stick it in the therma-bind like a piece of toast in a toaster.

Bingo, instant paperback.

It took less than an afternoon to print out 100 copies, and the only part of the production that I could not do myself was to make the finishing cut: That was simple, any local copy shop has a hydraulic cutting station that will do the job. The printer can create a stack of several of the raw books, and cut them all at once. Five cuts, and that created 100 books: Cost per cut? One dollar. Total out of pocket expense? Five dollars.
