It doesn’t really matter where a beach is located it is always beautiful. But it always remains a center of attraction for the visitors. People get spell bounded by the scenic beauty of the beaches. They simply want to lose themselves in the warm water of the beaches and some beaches are exceptionally adorable. Here are some of the most unique and magnificent beaches of the world.

1. Glass Beach

No one ever considered that a dumping place for the deteriorated materials of the 2nd world war would become so colorful and exceptionally beautiful of the current modern time. This wonder happened in California. 09 more beaches after the break...

2. Inland Beach

This beach is completely inland and is in the existence because of the little cove. It is known as Gulpiyuri beach, located in Spain.

3. Bowling ball beach

Mendecino, California has a beach where there are thousands of rocks appear to have gathered together and look like a small army of the boulders. This beach is now famous with a name of “Bowling Ball Beach”. All the boulders are exactly similar in size and have equal spacing among them naturally.

4. World’s most crowded beach

Huiquan Beach in Qingdao, Shandong Province has a reputation of the world’s most crowdedbathing beach and is the biggest sand beach of Asia.

5. Airport Beach

This airport of Barra is the one and only airport of the world where planes land on the beach. ThisScottish airport has only one British aeroplane company which provides the service from Glasgow and Benbecula commercially.

6. Hot Water Beach

This volcanic beach is located in New Zealand and has about 1,30,000 visitors per year. Heretemperature can reach up-to 64’C and you can bath only by digging a hole into it.

No wonder that Dubai is making wonder in this field too by building the worlds first refrigerated beach artificially to provide relief to the tourists from the scorching heat.

8. Red Sand Beach

This beach is located in the south of Hana Bay. Water shoes are recommended as it is having a cliff edge. The Cinder cone hill surrounding the bay gives it beautiful red color.

9. La Caleta Beach

This Spanish beach is now a days a center of attraction for thousands of tourist because of its clear water and beautiful sand color.

10. World’s whitest sand beach

This New South Wales has a Guinness world of being the world’s whitest sand beach in the world. This beach is now a great place of leisure and people enjoys it a lot.

Dawat-e-Shiraz(i) at Lahore School of Economics

Many would wonder why Dawat-e-Shiraz(i) or a lunch at an educational institution is important and worth writing a blog post about? Well for not good reason for me either as I never studied at Lahore School of Economics (LSE) nor my did my two siblings. So why have a lunch at LSE after-all?

I was in Lahore yesterday for a very quick visit. I went to Lahore along with my younger son by Daewoo and were in much hurry to have the thnigs done as early as possible and be back in Islamabad before sunset. And it so happened that LSE was within a few kilometres of our zone of activities. after we were finished with the the purpose we had gone to Lahore, I rang up my friend Syed Asghar Javed Shirazi, who is the deputy controller examination at the LSE. Without wasting his breath, he asked me to join him over lunch at LSE. Since it has been a long time that he has been asking me to come over to LSE whenever I go to Lahore, I decided to finally make it up and should not turn down his kind offer of lunch, as we were otherwise famished and needed some grub to munch.

Going to LSE wan't easy as the premises is on the other end of the criss cross of under developed huge DHA of Lahore. In fact if I say that the LSE has been intelligently designed and placed in between the thriving Lahore city (at its back) and the rural Lahore (where the main entrance faces), I may not be wrong. For the students of economics, nothing could have been so very well sited - an institution situated on the economic divide of a modern thriving economic Lahore and funds starved rural area.

Since Shirazi has sent over a guide, it was easier to find way to LSE. The building was obscured from outside with wall covered with green plants, so one couldn't find out what actually is inside the walled compound - I was soon to find out.

After parking the car in the huge parking lot, our guide started walking ahead of us and we followed. We walked and walked and my bones started to ache as we continued to walk. It seemed as if the paths and lawns would never end. Finally after lot of pre-lunch exercise, we saw a familiar face and we had a sigh of relief. Shirazi with his familiar smile, which his greyish mustaches failed to hide, met us outside his single story office building and took us inside. Since we had no time for any formal gup shup, we decided to go for the lunch and have gup shup over the lunch. We came out of his office and started walking once again.

Again after lot of walking, now joined in by crowds and pairs of students walking and sitting in the green lawns, enjoying the beautiful sun in the cold Lahore afternoon, we finally came to the cafe or the staff canteen. The cafe had lunch tables nicely laid and a few faculty members were already having their lunch. A menu was ordered, but I left it to the host to whatever he 'deemed' fit for the two famished Isloos to be served with. So for me a 'biryani' was ordered while for my son french fries and fried chicken was called for. As humble as he is, Shirazi ordered for himself a very modest lunch of 'Mong ki daal and chapatis.'

While the lunch arrived, we had our gup shup unleashed. In the meanwhile a sober and decent looking guy came in and sat on our table. But finding unfamiliar faces except Shirazi, he decided to change over to the other table where a few faculty members were already engrossed in a post-lunch conversation. I was told that the man none other than the rector of LSE. I was impressed by his simplicity and the diginity with he carried him. Had Shirazi introduced him to me, I would not have missed enjoying a few moments in the company of a learned man.

The lunch finally came and I envied Shirazi for having ordered for himself as the fuming hot oven-fresh rotis made me leave my biryani and share what Shirazi was eating - it was actually a 'da'wat-e-Shiraz(i)'. 'Da'wat' means calling someone over a formal lunch or dinner. Da'wat-e-Shiraz thus means a lunch of Shiraz, a place in southern Iran, famous for its archaeology of ruins of old Persian empire. And what Shirazi was eating exactly constituted the 'dish' mentioned in the famous Da'wat-e-Shiraz ( I will talk about it later).

After the very delicious lunch, for which I envy the faculty of LSE, we 'walked back' to Shirazi's office, where already a large crowd of students was waiting for him for usual office dealings. So we thanked Shirazi for the 'da'wat' and again walked back amidst the crowds of students and left Lahore with the wonderful memories of da'wat -e-Shiraz(i) at LSE.

England vs Pakistan: ODI Squad announced

The ongoing tour of Pakistan and England cricket teams has turned out ot be interesting and historical. The humiliating 3-0 defeat in the test matches series of the World Number 1 England at the hands of the Pakistan has been flashing headlines around the world.

The third test will be remembered for it was both hair-raising and historical. Hair-raising because in the first innings, Pakistan was back in pavilion for just 99. Historical because the Pakistan batsman stood firm against England bowling onslaught and won the match by 71 runs - making history since 1907 no team has ever won a match after scoring less than 100.

Now all eyes are set on the four limited over matches (ODIs) that the two teams will play in Dubai, starting 13 February later next week.

Shahid Afridi, aka Boom Boom Afridi, has been included in the Pakistan squad and it is hoped that he enthralls the arena with his super shots once again - though many would want him to cool-cool Afridi since in in his enthusiasm and prompted by the yelling crowds for hitting sixes and fours, he normally gives out easy catches and goes back into the pavilion.

From cities in the sea to floating cities in the sea

With the exploding population, we one day may run out of space on earth for more cities to live. Instead of caving into the mountains, the engineers and architects are professing the idea of extending cities in to the sea or even creating floating cities inside the sea, completely independent of the land.

The Palm Beach Jumeirah, an extension of Dubai into the sea is one such venture that is going on with full fanfare and speed - a marvel of modern day engineering and technology.

as per Wikipedia, The Palm Islands are an artificial archipelago in Dubai, United Arab Emirates on which major commercial and residential infrastructures will be constructed. To build the infrastructure of the city over sea, Belgian and Dutch dredging and marine contractor Jan De Nul and Van Oord, some of the world's specialists in land reclamation, have been hired. The islands are the Palm Jumeirah, the Palm Jebel Ali and the Palm Deira.

When I visited Dubai awhile ago, a friend took me to Hotel Atlantis, which part of the Palm Beach Jumeirah and is built over the sea with its foundations resting deep into the seabed. The road leading to the hotel also passes under the sea and it really feels awesome when driving through the under sea tunnel. On takes a sigh of relief when one surfaces on earth after exiting the tunnel.

The Palm Jumeirah consists of a tree trunk, a crown with 16 fronds, and a surrounding crescent island that forms an 11 kilometer-long breakwater. The island itself is 5 kilometers by 5 kilometers. It will add 78 kilometers to the Dubai coastline. The first phase of development on the Palm Jumeirah has created 4,000 residences with a combination of villas and apartments. On this beach is Hotel Atlantis. On bot sides of the hotel is sea, needless to say the hotel itself is inside the sea.

In this post today, I have only talked of a city inside the city. But how would you like to live on a city floating in the sea? Though the idea is still in the planning stage, but nothing is impossible if man has determination, will, money and the technology to realize one's dream.

I will write about the floating cities in days to come. But in the meantime, if you ever happen to be in Dubai, do visit the Palm Islands and see how man has built city in the sea - no doubt one of the modern wonders of the world.

Cricket: World Number 1 humiliated at Dubai

The 3-0 win the three test matches series by Pakistan humiliates world number 1 England with the final win by 71 runs by Pakistan in Dubai today.

Pakistan having won the first two test matches had to face a stunning blow by the English spinners on the first day of the 3rd test match at Dubai when Pakistan was dismantled for mere 99 runs. Many thought that England had avenged Pakistani spinners by striking back. Many also thought that the 3rd test match may not see the fourth day and Pakistan might be subdued.

But when England came to bat, they were thoroughly roughed by Pakistani bowlers and were all back in pavilion for 141. Then came Pakistan and were straightaway under pressure when toe openers were hurriedly packed up by the Brits. It was Younis and Azhar who put Pakistan in a commanding position and both hit centuries, first of their kind since the first test match of the present series. Younis's 127 and azhar's 157 added a tall target fr England to chase. Though the Englishmen thought it was chasable and doable.

Today, however, things changed rapidly- Umar Gul struck hard and so did Saeed Ajmal and both took four wickets each. Abdur Rehamn was on the heels and took the remaining two wickets to send world number one packing with 71 runs still remaining.

Today's victory of Pakistan also is historical: Since 1907, there has been no team which had scored less than 100 in the first innings and still won the test. Today's match will be remembered in the annals of test history for dozens of wickets falling in succession and a much lower ranking cricket team (Pakistan is number 5) humiliating world number 1 with a complete whitewash.

Now we wait for the ODIs, the first one to start on 13 February. The ODIs are going to be more fun than the test matches - with an injured English squad taking on jubilant Pakistan. We will meet on 13th.

England vs Pakistan: 4th of Play [3rd Test Match - Dubai] Free Live Streaming

When England destroyed Pakistan cricket team for 99 on the first day of the third test at Dubai, many thought that the English squad has finally taken the revenge of defeat of earlier two tests at the hands of a much lower ranking team. Naturally getting beaten being at the top of the world really hurts. There were speculations that perhaps the third test would not see the light of fourth day as England seemed to be aggressive as Pakistan had been in the earlier two tests.

But the second day was another day, when Pakistan bounced back and England was razed to mere 141. And then the match reversed.

day 3 was sensational and hard hitting. Younis who had become a centurion the day earlier added 12 runs before leaving the superb partnership with Azhar. From then on,it was Azhar's day. He opened the day with his previous day's score of 75 and made the English bowlers beg to leave the ground. But it was only after he had scored a splendid 157, that he decided to quit and was back in pavilion. This was also Azhar's highest test score - 157 off 442 balls.

Pakistan has thus managed to provide a tall, though attainable, target of 324 for the Brits to chase. At the close of the play Sunday, England were 36 for no loss. It now remains to be seen how determined the world number one are to fight back and chase the target.

Would Abdur Rehman and Saeed Ajmal strike back again? Would England strike back too and prove they are still the Number One? Can Pakistan having scored less than 100 in the first innings, beat back the record held for last over one century to finally win the test match?

The second day of the 3rd Test match between England and Pakistan took a new a turn. While it seemed that after dismantling Pakistan for mere 99 on the first day, and even after losing 6 wickets for 104, England would stick to the pitch for something over 200 to provide an imposing target for Pakistan to chase, things also went bad for the England team. They were packed up for 141. Abdur Rehman was the deadliest who took 5 Englishmen for 40. Strauss scored 56.

Younis Khan scored the first century of the current test matches series and is still playing at 115

When Pakistan started its second innings, it lost its two wickets very early - but then Younis and Azhar decided to stay - and stayed they did. Younis scored a century and Azhar almost hit a century. Century by Younis was the first of its kind in ongoing test series between England and Pakistan. Both had a third wicket stand for 194 and are still continuing. At the close of the play, Younis and Azhar were still at crease with 115 and 75 respectively.

Pakistan opens the third day of the match with a lead of 180.

Amazing Truck Art of Pakistan

Awhile ago, I wrote a post about the Truck Art in Pakistan. The art of decorating trucks, buses, tractor trolleys and even cars is something that is unique in the world. The vehicle owners take pains in getting their vehicles painted and ornamented to give a glossy and colourful look when these roll down on the roads.

The painters are almost completely illiterate people, but they come up with designs which are simple amazing and awe inspiring.

The popularity of the art can be ascertained from the fact that during Melbourne Commonwealth Games in 2006, Karachi to Melbourne Tram – a W-11 mini bus that one sees on the roads of Karachi, heavily decorated using bright and eye-catching colours, was taken to Australia to introduce to the Commonwealth countries the indigenous art of Pakistan.

Shortest and the Narrowest Streets of the world

Imagine what could be the length of the shortest street of the world - make any wild guesses. But you will be amazed to know that the shortest street of the world as entered in the Guinness Book of World Record is only 2.06 metres long or in other words 6 feet and nine inches. Amazing, isn't it?

This shortest street is the Ebenezer Place in Scotland.

Ebenezer Place, in Wick, Caithness , Scotland , is credited by the Guinness Book of Records as being the world's shortest street at 2.06 m (6 ft 9 in). In 2006 it surpassed the previous record (5.2 m, 17 ft) set by Elgin Street , Bacup, Lancashire . The street has only one address: the front door of Number 1 Bistro, which is part of Mackays Hotel.

The street originated in 1883, when Ebenezer Place was constructed; the owner of the building, a hotel at the time, was instructed to paint a name on the shortest side of the hotel It was officially declared a street in 1887.

Now a word about the narrowest street:

Spreuerhofstrae is the world's narrowest street, found in the city of Reutlingen , Baden-W¼rttemberg , Germany . It ranges from 31 centimeters (12.2 in) at its narrowest to 50 centimeters (19.7 in) at its widest.

The lane was built in 1727 during the reconstruction efforts after the area was completely destroyed in the massive city-wide fire of 1726 and is officially listed in the Land-Registry Office as City Street Number 77.

Leshan Buddha [ China ] - the World's Tallest Buddha Statue

The world's tallest Buddha statue dwarfs a visitor to Leshan, China. The 231-foot-tall (83-meter-tall) Buddha was carved from a riverside cliff in the 8th century to safeguard boaters on the treacherous waters below.

The Leshan Giant Buddha was built during the Tang Dynasty (618-907). It is carved out of a cliff face that lies at the confluence of the Minjiang, Dadu and Qingyi rivers in the southern part of Sichuan province in China, near the city of Leshan. The stone sculpture faces Mount Emei, with the rivers flowing below his feet. It is the largest carved stone Buddha in the world.

The Mount Emei Scenic Area, including Leshan Giant Buddha Scenic Area has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. It was not damaged by the 2008 Sichuan earthquake.

Construction was started in AD 713, led by a Chinese monk named Haitong. He hoped that the Buddha would calm the turbulent waters that plagued the shipping vessels travelling down the river. When funding for the project was threatened, he is said to have gouged out his own eyes to show his piety and sincerity. After his death, however, the construction was stuck due to insufficient funding. About 70 years later, a jiedushi decided to sponsor the project and the construction was completed by Haitong's disciples in AD 803.

Apparently the massive construction resulted in so much stone being removed from the cliff face and deposited into the river below that the currents were indeed altered by the statue, making the waters safe for passing ships.

At 71 metres (233 feet) tall, the statue depicts a seated Maitreya Buddha with his hands resting on his knees. His shoulders are twenty-eight metres wide and his smallest toenail is large enough to easily accommodate a seated person.

There is a local saying: "The mountain is a Buddha and the Buddha is a mountain". This is partially because the mountain range in which the Leshan Giant Buddha is located is thought to be shaped like a slumbering Buddha when seen from the river, with the Leshan Giant Buddha as its heart.
