Padmashree Dr. PR Krishna Kumar, Managing Director, Arya Vaidya Pharmacy, Coimbatore visited as chief guest to SDM college of Ayurveda and Hospital, Hassan for the Shishyopananya (Induction Ceremony) program held on 17^th Nov. 2014. There was an interaction with students and staff of the institute on the eve of this program. A gist of this interaction has been depicted here in the form of question and answers.

Can an Ayurvedic student be successful without a familial Ayurveda back ground?

There is a thought process in Ayurveda graduates that without a familial back ground, it is difficult to establish himself as a successful vaidya. It is not true. You have already investing your valuable five and half years for obtaining a degree in Ayurveda and this should become a background for you. During this period, dedicate yourself completely in acquiring knowledge through teachers from texts and from the observation in patients. You need to contemplate on whatever little is taught every day and convert into wisdom. Also ask your teachers with real interest to explain more whenever you find any topic unclear.

What should be taken when differences of opinions of Acharyas on the same issue?

At times you may be confused to follow when you see different author’s opinion on same issue is different. In such conditions, you need to go the exact context where this difference is observed. There are different meanings a single word in Ayurveda and ensure yourselves that you have taken the right meaning. There is revision in Ayurveda from time to time and that difference may be part of revision that took place. However, traditionally in Kerala, Astanga Hridayam was only the main text of reference and other texts were studied as it needs. It is always good to study one Brihattrayi thoroughly and you will be able understand the differences if any in other texts very carefully.

What is scope for career of Ayurveda graduates?

Of course, career has been the matter of concern for Ayurveda graduates. But remember your first focus should be to imbibe the exact knowledge explained in Shastras. Once you have the asset of true knowledge, people and money flow towards you. It is not fair to aspire for luxuries in the initial period of career. You must be ready to go and serve in villages or even to tribal people in the forest and serve them. Initially, your earnings may be less, but once you are established as a faithful physician, it is not so. For example, there was an astrologist to me who was taking few rupees for seeing horoscope. Once a patient from abroad came and shown his horoscope and he was given with all details and that foreigner gave him fifty thousand rupees and he also promised to send the same amount every year. See, the difference. All that he served to general public has been paid back by a single person. These miracles can happen to any Ayurveda vaidya who is dedicated and do his duties sincerely. Good news I can share with you. There are about fifty four thousand schools in the country and there is a planning to set up an Ayurveda clinic in every school in a new health project and I am sure there is huge requirement for Ayurveda doctors. But sad part is that there is very less quality doctors in Ayurveda. If you compare Ayurveda and Modern doctors in a locality, for every ten modern doctors, there are at least five good doctors, three may be mediocre and remaining two may be substandard. But if you take ten Ayurveda doctors in a locality, hardly we get one good doctor and remaining remain substandard. This has to be changed. There is an urgency to improvise the quality of efficiency of Ayurveda doctors.

How astrology helps in Ayurvedic clinical practice?

Ayurveda clinical practice can well be aided with modern technologies such as modern diagnostics. But one thing that can Ayurveda clinical practice is astrology. I strongly believe there is a close connection between disease manifestation and our Karma not only of present life, but also of previous births, ancestral one. Otherwise, what is the logic for a two year baby to carcinoma or other deadly diseases? This has to be elicited through horoscope and proper pujas or ritual should be carried out to get over from that for the treatment to become effective. Horoscope is modern MRI for an Ayurveda practitioner. Many skin diseases, spinal diseases and many other conditions have their karmic root. Without setting it right, sometimes even the effective treatments will not give any results.

What is need of standardization of medicines?

Standardization in pharmaceutical preparation is a need, that’s true. But we must take care that any shortcut in the name of standardization should not harm the quality of the medicine. Let me tell you an example. For the preparation of Ksheerabala taila, since earlier times we were taking 108 days, means only three batches in a year. Once I tried in a different way, by boiling the oil with medicines day and night and the time period was reduced to 54 days. As soon as it went to markets, doctors started calling me, that there is some problem with the taila of present batch, it is not with quality of earlier days. Immediately, I realized the difference and shifted back to the original practice of preparation. But I am against the application of modern technologies. Modern packaging system and vessels and heating technology have reduced a lot of human efforts and hours. Modern dosage forms like capsules etc. too can be prepared. But remember, many medicines which are freshly prepared are most effective. As far possible try to use freshly prepared medicines to the maximum extent to get better results. If patient is not cooperating with you for this, you can use prepared Kahayas and capsules etc. But with results get compromised. Standardization is not only the issue, ethics is more important. Certain wrong practices like reusing oil which is already used is not acceptable.

What is the focus of research in Ayurveda?

The main focus of research in Ayurveda should be systematically documenting the clinical cases. This is what we tried at our hospital with new software we developed and it was well received by scientific community. It will show whether the results can be replicated or not. Recently a scientist from abroad just asked us Ayurvedic management of acne and we downloaded all the acne cases we treated and he was surprised to know how systematically it was documented. Then he showed interest to carry out a research on a single herb which is acting effectively on skin conditions.

What is your opinion on heavy metal issue?

Heavy metal issue of Ayurvedic drugs has to be seen in both the angles. If proper purification of metals used in Ayurveda is done, there is no risk at all. But out of commercialization, if industries compromise with this process, there is definitely risk involved. The current permissible limit of heavy metals is questionable. Many of Rasa formulations do contain more than that, but are safe, provided prepared properly. The author who has published the articles in JAMA on heavy metals issue in Ayurvedic drugs has now wished to revisit his statements and experiments carried out.

How to build trust on Ayurveda among the general public?

There is a need to educate the people about Ayurveda. This has to begin with childhood studies. There was a demand from CBSE include basic knowledge about Ayurveda in their syllabus. Our research director worked out on it and submitted a syllabus to CBSE and this is being taught now. Even HRD minister has asked us to prepare syllabus to create awareness that can be included from lower primary itself. I hope we will be able to do that too in due course.

Advice to students

Now let me brief you certain rules to become a good student of Ayurveda. It is better to study in the early morning than at late nights. Whole day activities in the day make you tied and with that tired mind very less can be grasped if you opt for late night studies. Instead, wake early in the morning at Brāhmī Mūhūrta around 4.30am. There is no much freshness and grasping rate will be very high at that period. One hour study at the early morning would be equivalent to three to four of study in the evening or late night. You work hard for five and half years of Ayurveda graduation and you can enjoy whole of your life.

China to roll back regulations for traditional medicine despite safety concerns

Support for traditional medicine in China goes right to the top. President Xi Jinping has called this type of medicine a “gem” of the country’s scientific heritage and promised to give alternative therapies and Western drugs equal government support. Now the country is taking dramatic steps to promote these cures even as researchers raise concerns about such treatments.

From early next year, traditional Chinese medicines may no longer be required to pass safety and efficacy trials in humans in China. Draft regulations announced in October by the China Food and Drug Administration (CFDA) mean traditional medicines can skip such costly and time-consuming trials as long as manufacturers prepare ingredients using essentially the same method as in classic Chinese formulations. The State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the CFDA will compose a list of the approved methods.

The Chinese government has been forcefully promoting traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) as an alternative to expensive Western drugs. Doctors of Chinese medicine have welcomed the new policy, saying that it will make it easier for companies who produce such medicines to get drugs approved and make them available to patients. Lixing Lao, director of Hong Kong University’s School of Chinese Medicine, says that although traditional medicines will no longer need to go through clinical trials, the CFDA will still require remedies to undergo preclinical pharmacological testing and drug-toxicity studies in animals or cells to gain approval.

In Rare Move, Ayurveda Expert Appointed Secretary Of AYUSH Ministry

NEW DELHI: Breaking convention of appointing bureaucrats as secretary, the government on Wednesday appointed an Ayurveda expert to the AYUSH ministry. Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, who was appointed the special secretary in June this year, has been made secretary in the AYUSH ministry, according to an official order. The three-year tenure of Mr Kotecha, a former vice-chancellor of Gujarat Ayurveda University in Jamnagar, will also include his term as special secretary, the order said.

Last year, a World Bank expert Parameswaran Iyer was the first lateral induction in the government as secretary of the department of drinking water and sanitation. But Mr Iyer, who is leading PM Modi's Swachh Bharat initiative for rural areas, was not really an outsider. He had started out as an IAS officer but kicked his job after a foreign stint to remain with the World Bank.

Making room for Mr Kotecha is Bihar cadre IAS officer of the 1983 batch, CK Mishra, who was the health and Ayush secretary. He will be the new environment secretary, in place of senior IAS officer Ajay Kumar Jha, who will now be the new expenditure secretary.

Mr Mishra will take over as Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change as early as Thursday.

Mr Mishra was appointed the Health Secretary in July last year. He recently received the award on behalf of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for the best department for its contribution during 'Swachhta Pakhwada', an inter-ministry initiative of the Swachh Bharat Mission.

Instead of Mr Mishra in the health ministry, Preeti Sudan, a 1983 batch IAS officer of the Andhra Pradesh cadre, will assume the role of secretary.

Prior to this, Ms Sudan has served in various capacities in the Union Ministries including Ministry of Women and Child Development and Ministry of Defence. She is currently Secretary, Department of Food and Public Distribution in the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution.

GST Council slashes tax rates for Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and Homoeopathy drugs from 12% to 5%

Considering the representations made by the Ayurveda industry, the GST Council has slashed goods and services tax (GST) rates for the unbranded (classical) Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and Homoeopathy medicines from the present 12% to 5 %.

The reduction in the tax rates has come for a total of 27 items including classical Ayush drugs and certain food preparations.

Tax rate for food preparations put up in unit containers and intended for free distribution to economically weaker sections of the society under a programme duly approved by the Central government or any state government, has been reduced to 5% from the present 18%.

The decision to this effect came in the 22nd GST Council meeting held under the chairmanship of the Union finance minister on 6th October, 2017.

According to industry sources, 90 per cent of the ayurvedic products now available in the market are branded ones (proprietary drugs) and this reduction will not fetch any good result to the industry as it will benefit only the classical drug manufacturers.

West Bengal allows AYUSH practitioners to practice modern medicine including Antibiotics

West Bengal: After deliberating over the issue of allowing AYUSH practitioners to prescribe modern medicine, the state government of West Bengal has now decided to give them a go ahead, permitting certain practitioners of the Indian System of Medicine to practice modern medicine, but with some riders.

The approval comes in the form of a notification from the Health and Family Welfare Department ( AYUSH Branch), Government of West Bengal that declared that the persons holding qualifications specified in the second schedule to the Indian Medicine Central Council Act, 1970, and duly registered under the concerned state council in West Bengal, shall be entitled to practice the drugs of modern medicine in the state.

However, the notice has specified that the said permission is limited to the drugs those mentioned in the schedule A below, to the extent of training imparted to them as per the syllabus prescribed from time to time by the Central Council of Indian medicine under the aforesaid act of 1970.

Antimalarial (National Treatment Protocol to be followed)

University of Missouri Team Develops Non-toxic Gold Nanoparticles for Ayurveda Treatment

An Indian American professor, Kattesh Katti, and his research team at the University of Missouri have partnered with Tamil Nadu-based company Dhanvantari Nano Ayushadi in hopes of revolutionizing Ayurvedic medicine.

Ayurvedic medicine, also called Ayurveda, is a holistic medicine system originated in India thousands of years ago that uses herbal compounds, special diets and other healthcare practices to further help conventional preventative and disease treatments, according to a Missouri news release.

Katti and his team have developed a non-toxic delivery method using gold nanoparticles that may revolutionize Ayurveda, the news release said. His technique for producing the nanoparticles was licensed by Dhanvantari Nano Ayushadi.

The medicine uses different combinations of chemicals from natural herbs, spices, fruits and vegetables in combination with metals such as gold, silver and copper, the university said

The combinations strive to treat a number of disorders.

“In the past, metals predominantly used in holistic medicine have been crushed and burned; caregivers grind the ash with herbs to produce an ingestible treatment,” Katti, the curators distinguished professor of radiology and physics in the MU School of Medicine and the College of Arts and Science and senior research scientist at the University of Missouri Research Reactor, said in a statement.

“However, the ways in which those metals are procured often involve mercury; other toxic means to extract the gold or other alloys can be deadly if ingested in the wrong amounts. The gold nanoparticle production methods use a green technology that effectively eliminates the toxicity associated with these treatments,” Katti added.

The research team developed green nanotechnologies to produce phytonano medicines — the compounds used to form Ayurvedic medicine. The therapies are less toxic to the body and could provide alternatives to current treatments for diseases including cancer, arthritis and diabetes among others, the news release noted.

The technology is patent pending.

“These successful production runs within the DNA premises and the efficient training of our personnel fully fulfill the requirements signed in our contract,” Abhaya Kumar Jain, chief executive of DNA, said in a statement.

“We look forward to a long-term working and collaborative relationship with Dr. Katti and his team as we collectively advance the field of nano-Ayurvedic medicine to develop the next generation of health care products for the care and treatment of patients across the world,” Jain added.

Research and product development using the green nanotechnology techniques developed in Katti’s lab will continue at the facility in India, according to the university.

Using Indian Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy guidelines, DNA will continue to test formulations that could provide complementary therapies to chemotherapy, radiation and other traditional treatments, Katti said in the report.

“We are excited that two great minds, Mr. Abhaya Kumar Jain, a pioneer in the Indian pharmaceutical industry, and Professor Kattesh V Katti, globally recognized as the ‘father of green nanotechnology,’ have come together to bring nano-Ayurvedic medicine technology to India,” Anantkumar Hegde, an elected member of the Indian Parliament, said in the report.

Added Katti in the report, “The nano-Ayurvedic medicine approaches are built on rigorous scientifically validated methods. I am excited to be a part of this important journey using nano-Ayurvedic medicine approaches for treating, healing and curing various diseases. I have always dreamed of helping humanity through my science, I can now see that I am able to use my interdisciplinary green nanotechnology approaches for the development of Ayurvedic products.”

Govt amends law: Ayurveda, Unani doctors to practice allopathy in MP

BHOPAL: Now Ayurveda and Unani doctors will able to practice allopathic medicines in Madhya Pradesh. Twin bills were passed in the state assembly on Friday to enable these doctors to prescribe allopathic medicines. This is being done to meet out the shortage of doctors , health minister Rustam Singh told the house.

Two bills-Madhya Pradesh Ayurvigyan parishad (sanshodhan) vidhayak 2016 and MP Ayurvdic ,Unani tatha prakritik chikitsa vyavsai (sanshodhan) vudhayak 2016 were passed on Friday amidst opposition from the Congress.

Bala Bachchan, acting leader of the opposition said, "Now the affect of Vyapam scame is clear. More than 1000 doctors have been denied their degrees after the scam. The MBBS takes more than 5 years to complete, here you will train them in 3 months only."

He said that the government would withdraw the bill.

Ramniwas Rawat, chief whip of the Congress said, "this is highly objectionable. This government is playing with the health of the people. The government has not even taken the permission of medical council of India (MCI)."

Rawat also said that the government is not paying doctors well which is why no doctor is interested in government job. On the other hand doctors of Deepak foundation of Gujarat working for MP government get Rs 1 lakh salary.

Bachachan said that "by taking help of Deepak foundation, the government wants privatisation of health services in MP."

But health minister Rustam Singh assured the house that, "the Ayurveda and Unani doctors will be allowed to practice on 72 medicines. This is a temporary arrangement and as soon as doctors are available this would be withdrawn."

He said that some states like Maharashtra and Gujarat have also been following this practice.

UGC tells varsities to start PhD programmes for AYUSH disciplines

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked universities to start PhD programmes under Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) disciplines.

In a circular to all Central Universities UGC secretary Jaspal S Sandhu has said the Central Councils set up for research in these disciplines will sponsor 200 students for pursuing PhDs every year.

He also said the government has asked the Commission to issue an advisory in this regard. “AYUSH is aimed at developing Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) systems for healthcare of the people imbibing scientific interventions.

As per the letter, each of these five disciplines conduct clinical and basic research studies in collaboration with reputed scientific institutes:
Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy
Central Council for Research in Yoga & Naturopathy
Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine
Central Council for Research in Siddha

These Councils further desire to enhance research opportunities through PhD fellowship programme for the development of AYUSH, the UGC letter said.

It is intended to sponsor annually 200 candidates (125 PG of AYUSH and 75 PG of Science & technology streams) for pursuing Ph.D on AYUSH research topics, it added.

“Accordingly, it is requested that you may include AYUSH disciplines in your esteemed university and in the affiliated colleges for enrollment of candidates in the PhD programmes and avail fellowship from the concerned AYUSH Research Council,” the UGC said.

Entries Invited for awards on popular and scientific writing in Ayurveda Rashtriya Ayurveda Vidyapeeth invites entries for following awards on popular and scientific writing in Ayurveda. These awards are instituted to promote the popular writing in ayurveda for common people in the common language as well as scientific writing in Ayurveda for academicians and researchers in the scientific language. The awards are given in following categories. The last date for submission of entry in each case is 1 January 2017.

Category A: Award for Popular Writing in Ayurveda Two awards are given for popular writing in Ayurveda respectively in Hindi and English . Each award carry a cash prize of Rs.10000/- , a citation and a certificate from RAV. These awards are given to a best piece of writing/ featured article appeared in any national daily, weekly/monthly or quarterly news paper/ periodical during the preceding calander year ( 1 january to 31 december 2016). The published article should have a minimum length of 1000 words .

Category B: Award for Scientific Writing in Ayurveda This award is given in following three categories
a) Student scientific writing award : is given to MD / PhD/ M Phil students of ayurveda for their published research work in a national /international scientific journal of repute. This award may carry a cash prize of Rs. 20000/- , a citation and a certificate from RAV.

b) Senior scientific writing award : is given to a faculty member, physician, independent researcher or practitioner who has his scientific research published in a national/ international scientific journal of repute. This award carry a cash prize of Rs. 25000/- , a citation and a certificate from RAV.

c) Scientific writing award for best book / monograph in Ayurveda : This award is given to the best monograph/ book on Ayurveda published during the preceding year. The book should contain a minimum of 100 pages. This award carry a cash prize of Rs. 50000/- , a citation and a certificate from RAV. The publication sould belong to year commensing from 1st Janauary till 31 December 2016.

Following are the general rules for submission of application and selection process for these awards 1. The applicant should have a BAMS or equivalent qualification recognized by CCIM and should be registerd with respective registering authority.
2. Regarding the student category , the applicant should be a bonafied student of a recognized institution at the time of application. A certificate of this intent from the head of the institution is required in this regard.
3. There is no age limit for the applications. Any one of any age can apply in respective categories.
4. The publication should belong to the preceding year only. Old publications will not be considered. 5. Applications must be submitted on the given format along with four original copies of the publication( photo copies are not allowed). In case of an online publication, a soft copy of the article shall also be submitted.
6. An undertaking regarding the originality of the publication is required to be submitted along with the application.
7. In case of multiple authors , a consent from each of the author regarding submission of the publication for the award is required.
8. Author once awarded , may not apply in the similar category for next three years.
9. In case of multiple authors, the award sum may be distributed equally among all the authors .
10.A distinct review committee of eminent scholars, journalists and scientist pertaining to Ayurveda will evaluate all the applications in reference to their quality, relevance and aptness for the purpose of award in their respective categories. Best among all will be choosen for the award.
11.The awards will be conferred every year on the day of convocation of RAV.

BIMS, BUMS, BAMS reach Supreme court challenging crosspathy ban

New Delhi: Challenging the Delhi High Court decision of April 8th which clearly specified that BIMS, BUMS, BAMS, and other other practitioners of Indian Systems of Medicine cannot practice modern scientific system of medicine and prescribe allopathic medicines, National Integrated Medical Association and All India Indian Medicine Graduates Association are reported to have filed an appeal with the Supreme Court. The appeal came in the wake of the Delhi high court decision that had struck the clause Section 2(h) of the Delhi Bharatiya Chikitsa Parishad Act, 1998 (DBCP Act) and the Notification No.28-5/2004-Ay. (MM) dated 19th May, 2004 of Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM) that on the basis whereof the practitioners of Indian System of Medicine were claiming to have a right to practice in the Allopathic System of Medicine.

AMMOI urges PM to advise UPSC to consider Ayurveda as a subject in civil services exams

The Ayurveda Medical Manufactures Organisation of India (AMMOI) has urged the Prime Minister of India to advise the Expert Committee of the Union Public Service Commission to favourably consider the recommendation of AMMOI to the Union government and to the UPSC for inclusion of Ayurveda as one of the subjects both for preliminary and main examinations for civil services.

Saying that Ayurveda is not only a system of treatment but also a subject of medical science, AMMOI justified the necessity of inclusion. The point is that more than 15,000 BAMS graduates coming out from various colleges in India every year and several of them may opt for civil services provided Ayurveda is included as an optional subject. If UPSC considers it as a subject, it will definitely encourage the BAMS graduates to appear for the examination.

The prime minister’s office has forwarded the letter of AMMOI to the Ayush ministry and to the UPSC for deliberation and suitable actions. The ministry of Ayush has forwarded the same to the Central Council of Indian Medicine for their consideration. But, according to Dr D Ramanathan, general secretary of AMMOI, the UPSC has no interest in including Ayurveda as a subject in the civil services examinations and they are giving no importance to such a demand. Hence, AMMO has once again approached the Prime Minister seeking personal intervention in this matter.

He says that considering the interest of the Prime Minster and of the Ayush ministry, the CCIM can initiate steps to sensitize the UPSC in consultation with Gujarat Ayurveda University, Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi and National Institute of Ayurveda in Jaipur. It will also help UPSC to prepare the syllabus of the examinations also.

Dr Ramanathan said his organisation started to make this recommendation two years ago as several graduates in Ayurveda appearing for civil services and state government administrative examinations through non-Ayurveda subjects since Ayurveda is not included. He said AMMOI is ready to give training to the aspirants of IAS, IPS, IFS and IFoS from Ayurveda community once it is included as one of the main subjects. He said AMMOI now undertakes projects to impart suitable education and training to professionals working in the area of Ayurveda.

On behalf of the Ayurveda professionals in the country, AMMOI, the premier organisation of ayurvedic professionals in Kerala, will further communicate to the chairman of the Expert Committee of the UPSC to consider the request in the wake of immense support given by central government for the promotion of Ayurveda in the country, said he.

India develops Ayurvedic tablet than costs less than 10 cents to cure Type II Diabetes

Diabetes treatment in India might get cheaper as the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research launched on Wednesday the first scientifically validated Ayurvedic medicine that costs just Rs. 5 (less than 10 cents) to treat Type II diabetes.

The medicine named BGR 34 or Blood Glucose Regulator – 34 was developed by a team of researchers from National Botanic Research Institute (NBRI) and Central Institute for Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (CIMAP) in the research units of CSIR.

According to the information revealed by CSIR, the new diabetes medicine is the combination of six herbal extracts including daruharidra (berberis aristata), giloy (tinospora cordifolia), vijayasar (pterocarpus marsupium), gudmar (gymnema sylvestre), majeeth (rubia cordifoila) and methika (trigonella foenumgraecum).

Senior Principal and Chief Scientist at CSIRNBRI, Dr. A K S Rawat, while speaking to the media said that India is home to over 6 crore diabetes patients and there is a staggering growth in the number of patients recorded every year. The ayurvedic medicine, Dr Rawat says, will work effectively in controlling blood sugar. Moreover, it will limit the side effects caused by other drugs.

Dr CH V Rao, principal scientist of CSIR-NBRI said the key ingredients inhibit DPP-4 (an enzyme, which destroys the hormone incretin) and enhances insulin secretion.

“The product passed a series of tests and showed hypoglycaemic (very low levels of sugar in the blood) activity in experimental subjects,” he said.

“The pre-clinical studies of the drug revealed significant reduction in high blood sugar level in diabetes induced subjects, demonstrating effects similar to that of the reference stan dard anti-diabetic allopathic drug. It was also found to improve Thyroid Function Test (TFT) and Kidney Function Test (KFT) and lipid profile significantly besides providing antioxidant activity . No side effects were observed during the course of the study,” he added.

Dr. Anil K R Sharma, vice-president of Aimil Pharmaceuticals said the drug will be priced at Rs 5 per tablet. “It is available on all major chemist counters in the state,” he said. He said they chose Calicut to launch the drug as the global Ayurveda fest was being held in the city.

Earlier last month, the CSIR announced that they have been successful in formulating a medicine for treating type 2 diabetes but procrastinated the launch of the new drug to fall in line with the Global Ayurveda Meet, which was inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi on February 3rd , in Calicut, Kerala.

The new drug for diabetes has come out successful in the test carried out to assure its scientific validated for its efficacy and safety.

Pre-clinical studies of the anti-diabetic formulation have revealed significant reduction in high blood sugar level in diabetic patients and no side effect has been reported. The modern diabetes drugs are known for side-effects and toxicity.

India is one among the top countries with the highest number of diabetic patients along with the United States of America (USA) and China.

The discovery of the new medicine that can treat diabetes comes just a day after a Hyderabad-based lab confirmed that they have found a vaccine to prevent the spread of the Zika virus, which has been deemed by WHO as a possible epidemic. Also, for Prime Minister Narendra Modi the formulation of the new medicine is a triumph that can be highlighted as success of his “Make in India” initiative.

Kerala is considered as the birthplace of the traditional of Ayurveda and is home to the world famous Kottakkal Ayurveda Shala, where thousands of foreigners come each year for Ayurvedic retreat. Ayurveda is 5000 years old and is believed to be one of the first proven medical systems in the world. The two classic Ayurveda textbooks, Charaka-samhita and Sushruta-samhita are more than 2000 years old.

Army to throw open doors to alternative medicine

For the first time, the military is giving a chance to specialists in different forms ofalternative medicine, ranging from ayurveda and naturopathy to unani and homeopathy, to treat severely-ill soldiers, veterans and their dependents who have not responded to conventional treatment.

“Mainstream doctors have traditionally resisted alternative medicine treatment. But let’s be frank, we really don’t have the domain knowledge to dismiss it. The idea behind the experiment is to see if alternative medicine can work where allopathy has no answers,” said Lieutenant General BK Chopra, director general, Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS).

The AFMS, a cadre consisting of more than 6,000 doctors, is tying up with the ministry of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga and naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy) to kick-start the experiment.

The AYUSH had mooted a proposal to integrate the alternative medicine system with the conventional system, but the army suggested that a pilot project be undertaken first. The project will begin with 10 alternative medicine specialists being assigned to four army hospitals — Base Hospital in Delhi Cantt, Military Hospital in Jalandhar and Command Hospitals at Chandimandir and Pune.

AYUSH secretary Ajit M Sharan said some forms of alternative medicine had a legacy of more than 3,000 years but had not been exploited to their full potential. “These systems can be used to supplement conventional medicine for treating different types of cancers and TB, as standalone treatment for diseases like arthritis and dementia and also as food supplements. The tie-up will benefit soldiers,” Sharan added.

As part of the experiment, the specialists will be assigned to terminally-ill patients and those with some form of cancer. General Chopra said, “We don’t have much to offer to such patients and perhaps some other treatment could work for them. Alternative medicine systems shouldn’t be written off as they have evolved over centuries.”

The scope of the project could be expanded if alternative medicine treatment proves to be effective. This would give alternative medicine practitioners a bigger platform for research and could help address some myths about the systems they practice, Chopra said. “These traditional medicine practitioners will work under the supervision of army doctors to provide the best medical care to patients. Patients will benefit if we can find scientific evidence that suggests alternative medicine can cure or curtail diseases,” he added.

Requesting anonymity, a serving army doctor said it would be critical for the AFMS to monitor the experiment at every stage as traditional medicine has so far been a no-go area in the armed forces.

A central doctrine of Ayurveda postulates that human beings consist of three dosha prakriti or primary constitutional types that have been fixed at the time of conception.

A new study has established molecular basis for classification of individuals in accordance with three doshas or constitutional types of the ancient Ayurveda system of medicine.

Announcing the findings of the study at a press conference here on Wednesday, CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology Director Ch. Mohan Rao said “in my opinion, this is a major breakthrough linking our ancient wisdom with modern science”. Further studies could lead to development of new drugs and personalised medicine.

A central doctrine of Ayurveda postulates that human beings consist of three dosha prakriti or primary constitutional types that have been fixed at the time of conception. The three doshas are: Vata (relating to elements of space and air), Pitta (relating to elements of fire and water) and Kapha (elements of water and earth).

Each individual would have different levels of the three doshas, hence the diversity. The physical, mental and behavioural traits are based on these doshas and each person could be classified as belonging to one type or the other if one of the doshas predominates.

Seeking to know if such phenotypic classification has any molecular basis, a genetic-based study led by K. Thangaraj of CCMB in collaboration with six other institutions, was taken up six years ago.

Well-trained physicians screened about 3,400 people and the same sets of people were also screened by a software called AyuSoft developed by C-DAC. A total of 264 Individuals with more than 60 per cent of dominance of one dosha as determined by the AyuSoft were selected for analysis using nearly one million genetic markers (SNPs).

After extensive genetic and statistical analyses, 52 genetic markers were identified to significantly differentiate the three doshas, despite the different ethnic, linguistic and geographical backgrounds of the selected individuals, said Mr. Thangaraj. He said that one gene PGM1 was significantly associated with Pitta Prakriti.

“This is important because Pitta is associated with heat/ digestion or metabolism in Ayurveda and PGM1 gene is involved in several metabolic activities, providing further scientific evidence for Prakriti classification of Ayurveda”, he said.

Mr. Thangaraj said that further molecular studies could lead to sub-classification of each dosha and effective personalised medicine eventually. Manipal University, Manipal, Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara College of Ayurveda, Udipi, Sinhgad College of Engineering, Pune, Foundation For Revitalisation of Local Health Traditions, Bangalore, University of Pune and Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore are the other institutions which collaborated in the study.

The study was recently published in an open access journal Science Reports, Nature Group of Publications.

COMPLIANCE TO ABS GUIDELINES

Implementation of guidelines on access to biological resources and benefits sharing (ABS) as per Biological Diversity Act of 2002 is yet to take place in all the states in the country. The objective of the guidelines issued by the Union Ministry of Environment & Forests in November 2014 was to ensure sustainable use of bio-resources across the country. The government has found that Ayush companies have been the largest single beneficiary of bio-resources in the country as they have been commercially exploiting bio-resources for manufacturing their various products for all these years. The ABS guidelines empower respective state biodiversity boards to determine the amount of benefit sharing to be given by Ayush manufacturers to the state exchequer under the Act. In fact, notification of the guidelines on ABS have been held back for the past 10 years due to pressure from the industry groups during successive government regimes as it helped mainly Ayush companies to save thousands of crores of rupees that they would have to shell out as royalties every year.

ABS guidelines mandate collection from domestic and foreign companies 0.1 to 1 per cent of their ex-factory gross sales of products using biological resources and traditional knowledge of the country. As per the Section 7 and 24 (2) of the Biological Diversity Act, manufacturers extracting plant based materials for commercial purposes without intimation to State Biodiversity Boards shall be punishable under Section 55 (2) of the Act with imprisonment which may extend up to three years with fine or five years with fine or both. One of the main reasons for ineffective implementation of the Act and the guidelines is the lack of cooperation by the state governments. Only a few states like Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Sikkim, West Bengal and Maharashtra have started enforcing the provisions of the Biological Diversity Act so far although 28 State Biodiversity Boards and 34,000 Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs) have been set up in the country. BMCs constituted by the local bodies in States prepare, maintain and validate People’s Biodiversity Register (PBR) in consultation with the local people. Now only Maharashtra State Biodiversity Board started taking action against Ayush companies for non compliance of ABS payments by way of sending notices for recovery. Ayush companies in the state, however, are in no mood to comply with orders and planning to challenge the same. A critical statute like Biological Diversity Act needs to be implemented with extreme urgency and all the state governments have to cooperate with the Centre for the sustainable growth of Ayush sector. And the Ayush companies and their associations have a moral responsibility to participate in this exercise by giving a part of their earnings to the government for preserving bio-resources of the country.

Ayurveda Prakriti classification has genetic basis: Study

Ayurveda is among the oldest system of health, medicine, and holistic living. The central philosophy of Ayurveda revolves around facilitating each individual to understand his/her own body and mind, so that he/she can cultivate a healthy lifestyle accordingly.

To this effect, Ayurveda recognizes that each individual has a particular temperament and constitution (Prakriti) that is formed during the union of sperm and ovum itself, and hence it is genetic in origin.

Prakriti Classification of Individuals

Ayurveda classifies people into three categories of Prakriti based on the Dosha and the associating elements and Gunas (refers to 3 qualities – Sattva etc.) that are prominent in each individual. Doshas are three in number: Vata (related to movement), Pitta (related to digestion), and Kapha (related to cumulation).

Based upon which Dosha is predominant in an individual, people are classified into three categories of Prakriti– Vata, Pitta, andKapha.

Further, Ayurveda defines health and illness in terms of equilibrium or imbalance in theseDoshas. If a person’s Doshas are in sync with his Prakriti, then such a person is healthy. If the proportion of Doshas significantly differ from his Prakriti, then there is imbalance that leads to illness.

Thus, Prakriti classification not only plays a central role in cultivating a healthy lifestyle, but also in diagnosing the illness of a patient. Further, without knowing the Prakriti of an individual, no treatment is possible in Ayurveda.

Genetic basis of Prakriti Classification

For long the correlation between Genomics and Prakriti classification was hypothesized. Many studies in the past have tried to establish the correlation as well. But, a recent paper published in Nature journal by a team of Indian scientists has come upon definite results that clearly establishes a genetic basis for Prakriti classification.

The scientists screened a total of 3416 healthy men located at different geographical locations and belonging to diverse linguistic and ethnic groups. Out of 3416 men, 262, who could be clearly classified into various Prakriti types based on their examination by senior Ayurveda physicians as well as Ayurveda software, were selected.

The scientists conducted a genome wide ‘single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)’ analysis on those 262 subjects. The analysis revealed that there were 52 SNPs (genetic variations) that were prominently different from the three Prakriti types. Using the principal component analysis of these 52 SNPs, the scientists successfully classified their 262 subjects into theirPrakriti types.

The scientists further validated their findings by further analyzing samples of 297 Indians with known ancestry. The highlight of the study is that, the scientists were able to classify subjects into Prakriti types using SNP’s irrespective of their ancestry. Further, they found a gene PGM1 that correlates with Prakriti type-Pitta.

The study thus clearly establishes a genetic basis of Ayurvedic classification of individuals based on Prakriti and has provided scientific evidence for the same. This marks another successful attempt at bridging the gap between Ayurveda and evidence based scientific approach.

LUCKNOW: A scientifically validated anti-diabetes herbal drug, named 'BGR-34', was launched by a Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) lab in Lucknow on Sunday. A combination of natural extracts from plants, the drug is based on Ayurveda and has no side effects. The drug is for management of type-II diabetes mellitus.

The drug has been jointly developed by two CSIR laboratories, National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI) and Central Institute for Medicinal and Aromatic Plant (CIMAP). It was launched on the 62nd annual day of the NBRI for commercial manufacturing and marketing by M/s Aimil Pharamaceuticals Pvt Ltd, New Delhi.

"The drug has extracts from four plants mentioned in Ayurveda and that makes it safe," said Dr AKS Rawat, senior principal scientist, NBRI. It has been tested on animals and scientific study has found it safe and effective, with clinical trials showing 67% success.

The drug boosts immune system, works as antioxidant and checks free radicals. Though there are other anti-diabetes herbal drugs in the market, 'BGR-34' has been validated scientifically.

The drug will help maintain normal blood glucose levels, reduce chances of complications due to persistent high blood glucose levels and impart a good quality life to patients with high blood sugar levels.
The formulation was launched earlier by the Vice-President Hamid Ansari in February last year at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, but on Sunday, the product was launched commercially.

"We will manufacture it now and it will be available in market shortly, may be in the next 15 days," said V S Kapoor, marketing head of Aimil Pharmaceuticals for UP and Delhi. It will be available in the form of tablets and may cost Rs 500 for 100 tablets.
