[How to] Recover iPhone Passcode

When you forget the password of your email,facebook or Twitter account you simply click "Forget my Password". But what about your iPhone? What if you set a ‘Restrictions Passcode’ a long time ago and now you can’t remember the digits?

You’ve got a couple of options. For starters, you could restore your iPhone as a new device through iTunes. You can’t restore from a previous backup, because your passcode is saved in that file

Your other option isn’t quite so painful. All you need is about 5 minutes and iPhone Backup Extractor for Mac OS X, which you can get here.
This guide is specifically for Mac OS X users. But if you meet the criteria and could really use some help recovering your iPhone passcode, dig in!

Step 1: Once you’ve download the free app, iPhone Backup Extractor, open it up and let it extract itself. You will then want to click ‘Read Backups’. A list of your previous backups should now populate. Just select the backup that you want to extract the passcode from.

Step 2: You should now be looking at a list of apps that have been backed up. Scroll all the way to the bottom and click ‘iOS Files’, and then ‘Extract’. I recommend extracting it to your desktop so you can find it easily.

Step 3: Extraction will take a minute. Once completed, open the folder it created called ‘iOS Files’. Look for the file named ‘com.apple.springboard.plist’, and open it up.

Step 4: As you scroll down this list of properties, you should see a key titled ‘SBParentalControlsPin’ and to the right of it a value. This is what your Passcode is, enter it in your iDevice, and thank Simon Blog for sharing this little tidbit with us.

It is important to note that jailbroken users, can also locate their passcode via SSH. All you have to do is navigate to ‘var/mobile/Library/Preferences’.

How to: Jailbreak Untethered iOS 4.2.1 using Greenpois0n.[WIN]

Members of Chronic Dev Team has finally announced the release of the long awaited GreenPois0n RC5 for Windows. This tool brings untethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak for all iOS devices. Keep in mind, the software is only available for Mac OS X & Windows. A Linux version will be coming very soon.

Follow the below guide for step by step instructions to convert your tethered jailbreak to untethered jailbreak on iOS 4.2.1:

STEP 1: Your device must be on iOS 4.2.1, then download GreenPois0n RC5 for Mac OS X from here. [Mirror]

STEP 2: Launch GreenPois0n RC5 then connect your iPhone into your Mac via USB and click on Jailbreak as shown below:

STEP 3: Follow the instructions shown on the screen to enter DFU mode:

[How to] Unlock iPhone 4 on iOS 4.2.1 / 1.59.00 Baseband after Jailbreak with Greenpois0n RC5

Now you can update your iPhone 4 to iOS 4.2.1 with preserving 1.59.00 baseband, which means that you will be able to unlock your iPhone 4 with ultrasn0w 1.2. Let's check out the full step by step guide after the jump

STEP 1: Download TinyUmbrella from here.

STEP 2: Open TinyUmbrella then click on "Start TSS Server"

STEP 3: Open iTunes.

STEP 4: Now, Click on "Restore" NOT "Update"

STEP 5: Now you will get "Error 1013" which means that your baseband has been preserved.

STEP 6: Exit iTunes.

How to Put an iPhone Into DFU Mode

DFU means Device Firmware Update. If a restore using Recovery Mode doesn't work you will want to use DFU Mode as a last resort. When placing your iPhone into DFU Mode it does not load the OS before attempting the restore

To put the iPhone into DFU mode so you can do an iTunes firmware restore follow these steps:
Step One
Open iTunes and connect the iPhone to your Mac.

Step Two
Press and hold the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button at the same time.

Step Three
After exactly 10 seconds release the Sleep/Wake button. Continue holding the home button until you iTunes pops up a message telling you that it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode.

The iPhone screen will remain black like this:

NOTE***: It may take a few attempts to get your iPhone into DFU mode. Generally, I hold down both buttons then release the Home button just before I think the Apple logo would appear. If you are still holding both buttons down and you see the Apple logo you are holding them down for too long!

At stock settings, the effect, while present, isn’t as pronounced as one might expect; but that’s nothing a quick adjustment of the Zoom, Pitch, and Roll in the settings section of the Settings.app won’t remedy.

All in all, DeepEnd is a pretty good jailbreak tweak; it does exactly what it says it does, and on top of that it’s free on Cydia for jailbroken iPhones on Ryan’s repo. Just add: http://rpetri.ch/repo/ to your ‘Sources’ in Cydia via the ‘Manage’ tab. iPhone 4 only.

Cydia added a new feature yesterday to bring Theme Center which includes all popular themes for your iPhone but Today Theme It is available as a Cydia package for jailbroken iOS device. Theme It comes with a clean, easy-to-use interface and quite few themes. Let's see how to install it.

STEP 1: You need a jailbroken device to perform this guide, you can use our guide posted here to jailbreak your iOS 4.2.1 device using Redsn0w.

STEP 2: Open Cydia, tap on Manage, then Source, edit and add the below repository source as shown in the screenshot below:

[How to] Put Custom Ringtone and SMS Notification into your iPhone

Following up on the earlier iPhone hacks is customizing the most common audio: ringtone and SMS notification. Apple has locked down custom ringtones and profit from them. The biggest problem is, their selection is scarce and sucks. Here’s a simple guide on how to upload the Ringtones:

Choose an MP3 file and trim it to 30 seconds or less – I use Audacity (download link) to do it
Import that MP3 into iTunes
Goto iTunes -> Preferences (for Mac) or Edit -> Preferences (for PC)
Navigate to Advanced -> Importing tab and set the “Import Using:” to AAC
Find the trimmed MP3 file inside iTunes, right click and choose “Convert Selection to AAC”
Right click the AAC version of the file and choose “Get Info”
Note the path to the file as indicated by the “Where” section under the “Summary” tab
Navigate to the location of the file and copy it to desktop
Change the extension of the copied file to “.m4r”
Open the files in iTunes and it should be automatically inserted under Ringtones category, which then can be transferred to iPhone

NOTE: I have tried to use “SoundConverter” and set the file type to be m4a. This actually doesn’t work. When I did it that way, the file will be uploaded but won’t be able to be played. It might have something to do with the file size generated by “SoundConverter” being too large.

SMS Notification is slightly more complicated than the Ringtones counterpart. SMS notification actually can’t be added, only modified. I also recommend shorter file for SMS notification. Here are the steps I take:

Trim MP3 files using Audacity (usually SMS notification should be shorter, roughly 3-4 seconds should be good)
Import the MP3 file to iTunes
Change the iTunes import to AIFF (Follow the ringtones guide to change importing mode in iTunes)
Find the AIFF file and copy to desktop
Change the extension to “.caf”
SFTP to the iPhone using Cyberduck (Mac) or WinSCP (Windows) or any other SFTP software
Navigate to the following directory: “/System/Library/Audio/UISounds”
Change one of the “sms-received.caf” file to “sms-received_.caf” where is an integer from 1 to 6 that is least preferrable
For example: Rename “sms-received6.caf” to “sms-received_6.caf” to replace the Electronic with custom sound
Upload the file on the desktop using the old name of that was changed
For example: if “sms-received_6.caf” is changed to “sms-received_6.caf”, upload the file using the name “sms-received6.caf”
Choose in iPhone the replaced tone
For example: if you replaced sms-received6.caf, then you should choose Electronic

UPDATE: Ringtone should be set to 30 seconds. Another way to trim the music is to use iTunes’ ‘start time’ & ‘stop time’ field. This field is accessible by right clicking the song then choosing Get Info -> Options. After performing that, you export the file as AAC then rename it.

UPDATE: As one commenter mentioned, the SMS Notification hack only works on jailbroken iPhone

[Guide to] Update to iOS 4.3 on your iOS Device Without Developer Account

iOS 4.3 beta 1 has been released couple of days ago with new features for both iPad and iPhone. Today, we'll show how to successful method to update your device to iOS 4.3 without a developer account.

Quick Guide on how to "hacktivate" iOS 4.3 without a developer account.

1st Method
1) Install iOS 4.3
2) "Jailbreak" with redsn0w 0.9.6rc8, you should see a white block in de upper left corner from your iPhone, reboot it
3) get iFunBox
4) navigate to "Raw File System" -> /System/Library/CoreServices
5) open SystemVersion.plist and remove the following lines:
ReleaseType
Beta
6) Reboot the iPhone
7) Activate your iPhone with iTunes

2nd Method (thx to joshingknight)
1) Restore to 4.2.1
2) Shift-Update and point the 4.3 IPSW. here’s important that you Shift-Update, not Shift-Restore!
If you want File System Access just jailbreak it like you were on 4.2.1 and reboot your iDevice when it’s stuck on a black screen, then you have FS Access with tools like iFunBox, but Cydia won’t work

[How to] Fix iFile Cocoa error 513

Having error on your iFile when you wanted to edit some files in your iPhone? This kind of permission or so called "Cocoa Error 513" can be fixed simply by using MobileTerminal.

Here's how you can solve it (Step by Step Guide)

Open MobileTerminal
When MobileTerminal starts up, type in su then hit return.
Now type in your password, default password if you did not change it is alpine and hit return
Type in cd /var/stash then hit return.
Now type in your MobileTerminal chmod -R 4755 /Applications/iFile.app or chmod -R 4755 /Applications.pwn/iFile.app and hit return.
Now reboot your iPhone/iTouch/iPad.

After reboot,your iFile should be working properly as it is. Enjoy.

***P/S: Red highlighted/Bold/Italic words is the command you need to type in your MobileTerminal.

[Guide] Boot Your Tethered Jailbroken iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad Using Redsn0w 0.9.6rc7 (Windows & Mac)

Few hours ago, the iPhone Dev-Team has just released Redsn0w 0.9.6rc7 with one click tethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak boot support. Now I will show you how to quickly boot your tethered jailbroken iPhone using RedSn0w 0.9.6rc7 for Windows and Mac. Check out the step by step guide after the jump.

For Windows users:

STEP 1: Download Redsn0w 0.9.6rc7 for Windows and the proper firmware for your device then place them in one folder, let's name it "Pwnage" on you desktop (Download links at the end)

STEP 2: Double Click on Redsn0w file to extract it.

STEP 3: Press on Windows icon at the task bar and type "run" then type "cmd" to start Command Prompt on Windows with Administrative privileges.

STEP 4: Input the following command :

For devices with the new bootrom:

%homepath%\Desktop\Pwnage\redsn0w_win_0.9.6rc7\redsn0w.exe -j -i %homepath%\Desktop\Pwnage\iPhone3,1_4.2.1_8C148_Restore.ipsw

For devices with the old bootrom (iPod 2G, iPhone 3GS):

[How to] Fix all types of Cydia's Error

**If you are having touble getting the "apt-get" command to work, you will need these packages installed**

Identify the Problem:This is probably a good place to start ... follow the steps to see if you can determine the problem with your Cydia:

1) Open Terminal on the device or through SSH.
2) Type the following:

su
alpine
apt-get update

3) Read the error message.

Sometimes just running the update command will fix the issue!

Cydia Crash on Load:

1) SSH into your device.
2) Navigate to the /var/lib/apt/lists/ folder.
3) Delete everything EXCEPT the partial folder.
4) Reboot.

Another possible fix is to SSH into root/private/ect/apt/sources.list.d and remove all entries except saurik.list.
This will delete all your manually added repos.

Cydia Won't Add a Repo:
There are very few possible explanations, here are a few:
1) The repo is down, check the forums for more information.
2) You typed it wrong, many people forget to put the / at the end of a repo url.
3) You aren't connect to a network ... pretty self explanatory.

Source Error:
A common error message would be Bzip2 error or the fact that a source is not functioning correctly.

IF A REPO ONLY ACCEPTS ONE DEVICE PER ACCOUNT YOU WILL GET THIS MESSAGE IF YOU ADD MORE THAN ONE DEVICE (our repo is like this)

If you cannot remove the source from Cydia or the problem persists, try this:

1) SSH into your device.
2) Navigate to the /etc/apt/ folder.
3) Backup the cydia.list OR sources.list.d file.
4) Edit the cydia.list OR sources.list.d file with a text editor and remove the entry related to the problematic source.
5) Reboot.

Crash After "Reloading Data":
If Cydia is crashing after the Reloading Data message then try this:
(If you don't have terminal installed, use terminal through SSH)

1) Open Mobile Terminal/Terminal via SSH.
2) Type:

su
alpine
dpkg --configure -a

3) Reboot.

I am unsure that this is a valid fix but if you try it let me know the outcome please.

Package Header Error:
If on startup, Cydia says there's an error with package headers do the following to fix it.

1) Open terminal and type:

su
alpine
dpkg --a configure

2) Respring just to make sure it reloads the data.

Icon is not Visible:
If your Cydia icon disappeared after you installed a new package and restarting doesn't get it back, follow these steps:

1) SSH into /applications/cydia.app
2) Copy the icon.png to your computer.
3) Delete icon.png from the device
4) Respring and a basic, white icon will appear for Cydia.
5) Copy the icon.png back to /applications/cydia.app
6) Respring and the normal icon should be there.

Reinstall Cydia:
If you can't find a fix for the problem and you really want it fixed, then try reinstalling Cydia.

1) Open Terminal on your device or through SSH
2) Type the following commands:

su
alpine
apt-get remove cydia
apt-get install cydia

3) Reboot

Another method of reinstalling Cydia is:

1) Download http://www.2shared.c...13e/Cydia.html?
2) SSH the package to /var/mobile on your device.
3) Open Terminal and type the following:

su
alpine
dpkg -i cydia.deb

4) Reboot (twice sometimes)

If none of the above worked then you will be forced to rejailbreak ... there is no other way!

Download Cyfix 1.4b to Speed Up Cydia.

Cyfix fixes those user-generated errors you get on Cydia when you enter a wrong repository URL. The repository may be dead, protected against you, or simply misspelled, resulting in errors each time you refresh and/or add/uninstall sources. Sometimes these sources don’t appear in the Sources list within the Cydia app GUI, so the regular user couldn’t even uninstall the offending repository even if he wanted to.

Update : Version 1.4b released ! Script optimized and one video added

Now with Cyfix, you run the script (requires root login) in terminal and enter the URL of the offending repository, and Cyfix will remove all traces of the repository from Cydia.

How to use :

Know how to connect with SSH
MobileTerminal on your iDevice
Place the cyfix script in /usr/bin on your iDevice with SSH and chmod it to 775. Log into root and type ‘cyfix’ in mobileTerminal to run. Enter the repo URL at the prompt and wait.

Changelog :

v1.4b – Added a fail safe trigger. Typing ‘exitnow’ in the url input will exit Cyfix immediately.

v1.3b – Added apt-get for plutil and wget; required for procedure and updating, respectively.

Apple has released iTunes 10.1.1 for Windows and Mac, this update of iTunes fixing Alot of bugs while syncing music and videos, as usual I advice for who has a jailbroken device to stay away from using this new version till we get the word from the Dev-team.

What's new in iTunes 10.1.1:
This release provides a number of important bug fixes, including:

Addresses an issue where some music videos may not play on Macs equipped with NVIDIA GeForce 9400 or 9600 graphics.
Resolves an issue where iTunes may unexpectedly quit when deleting a playlist that has the iTunes Sidebar showing.

The New Cydia by saurik and help from chpwn has now arrived and is a lot faster (It really is a lot faster) and is supposed to give fixes to some of Cydia’s flaws, bugs, and glitches.

Here's what you need to do:

Things you will need to have installed before installing Cydia:
A. iFile – found in Cydia
B. Open SSH – found in Cydia

1. Download the .deb file here.
2. SSH the file from your computer to anywhere in your iPhone filesystem.
3. Open iFile and open the location where you saved the .deb file.
4. Tap the .deb file and press Install.
5.Now REBOOT your iDevice.
6. You are now rocking the New Cydia!
[NOTE: If you have Safari Download Manager you can download the Cydia .deb that way and then you can skip the OpenSSH step]

How to : Save and Reinstall A List of Your Cydia Apps

In case you upgraded your device to a newer version of iOS and want to keep your Cydia apps, themes, tweaks, package and etc from losing, here's a few simple steps to save your Cydia apps list and reinstall it again to your device.

Save your Cydia apps:

Open Mobile Terminal (you can get it from Cydia)

Enter this command: "dpkg --get-selections> cydia-apps.txt"

Now we have created the Cydia app list file which called "cydia-apps.txt" in " / var / mobile "

You are done, use your favorite SFTP client (Cyberduck (Mac OS X) or WinSCP (Windows) to SHH into your device).

Reinstalling your Cydia apps again:
Now I will submit the file called "cydia-apps.txt" to "/ var / mobile", after reinstalling Cydia and Terminal, type this commands:

"su"

Type your password (default password: alpine)

"dpkg-set-selections "

"apt-get dselect-upgrade"

If you found problems type this command: "apt-get dselect-fix-missing-upgrade"

Apple Put a Baseband Requirement on iOS 4.2.1 [WARNING]

Apple has iOS4.2.1 but not alone, it has merged some traps with this version for jailbreakers and unlockers with the introduction of a baseband requirement for iOS 4.2.1. Precisely, if you are using Saurik’s server or tiny umbrella and trying to restore 4.2.1 on an iPhone 4, you will end up in recovery mode and tiny umbrella will not be able to pull you out of recovery.

Wondering how to backup your important notes on your iphone? Heres how without using any apps or program. =)

How to backup Contacts :

Navigate to /private/var/mobile/Library/AddressBook
There will be two files save them on your computer.

How to backup Messages :

Navigate to /private/var/mobile/Library/SMS
Save sms.db on your computer

How to backup Calendar:

Navigate to /private/var/mobile/Library/Calendar
Copy Calendar.sqlitedb to your computer

How to backup Notes:

Navigate to /private/var/mobile/Library/Notes
Copy notes.db and notes.idx to your computer

How to backup your Call History:

Navigate to /var/mobile/Library/CallHistory/
copy call_history.db to your computer

How to backup your Picture:

Navigate to /var/mobile/Media/DCIM/100APPLE

copy images you want to your computer

To restore these databases after updating and jailbreaking navigate to specified paths and replace the files with you copied and saved earlier.

Jailbreak 4.2.1 iOS iPhone 4, 3gs, 3g, iPad, iPodTouch with Redsn0w 0.9.6b4 [ How to Guide ]

The bad new is that right now, the redsn0w 0.9.6b4 is a tethered or semi-tethered jailbreak for some devices (i.e. you will lose your jailbreak every time you reboot your iDevice, so you have to follow the following steps every reboot to have a jailbroken device )

Untethered Devices:

iPhone 3GS (old bootrom)

iPhone 3

iPod touch 2G (Non-MC Model)

Tethered Devices:

iPhone 3GS (new bootrom)
iPhone 4
iPad
iPod touch 2G (MC Model)
iPod touch 3G
iPod touch 4G

NOTE: Those of you who rely on a carrier unlock stay away from Redsn0w and iOS 4.2.1.

GUIDE:

STEP 1: Download redsn0w 0.9.6b4, iOS 4.2.1 for your device(download links at the end).

STEP 2: Update to 4.2.1 firmware using the IPSW file you just downloaded via iTunes 10.1.

STEP 3: Launch Redsn0w 0.9.6b4, and browse for iOS 4.2.1 firmware final version

STEP 4: Select "Install Cydia" and click on "Next"

STEP 5: Now make sure your device is both OFF and PLUGGED IN to the computer before you click “Next”.

STEP 6: At this stage you will need to put your iPhone in DFU mode by holding “Power” button and then while holding the “Power” button, you will now have to hold “Home” button too. Now after few seconds release “Power” button but keep holding “Home” button until installation begins.

STEP 7: You will Get a Jailbroken Device on the latest iOS 4.2.1 as soon as the process ends.

STEP 8: This step is only for these devices iPhone 4, 3GS (New Bootrom), iPod touch 4G, 3G, 2G, iPad. While this is tethered jailbreak and whenever you want to do anything related to jailbreak like SSH your device, or running Cydia, you must first run your device in the so called “jailbroken state” on every reboot by using “Just boot tethered right now” option.
