If you do get offended, get a life!

It is a general perception that cosmetic surgery, whether it is necessary or not, is only something for the rich and/or famous. Which brings me to my point, surely if you are earning truck loads of cash and are deemed a media figure you pay careful attention to little things like, oh a missing front tooth. Why oh why has football tycoon, Irvin Khoza, in all his wealth not gone to a dentist and had that missing incisor seen to? By no means am I campaigning for people to go out and have random surgeries so as to fit the image the media has created for us as a benchmark, but rather a little self pride. So Mr Khoza, extract a few bob out your bank account and have that gaping hole seen to, it is the World Cup year after all.

Most 18 to 25 year-olds will agree that their diet is hugely affected by which watering hole they just so happened to be sinking a few cold ones at. Whether it’s the five minute walk to the nearest petrol station for a ‘sausage roll’ or the surprisingly palatable ‘boerie roll’ sold on the side of the street. For me it was the 10 metre stagger to Steers where I would invariably order the same thing: ‘Club Sandwich and chips’ for a then whopping R19.99.

The combination of bacon, cheese, chicken mayo and freshly toasted white bread was just magical. Despite the fact that one’s taste buds were rather diluted by the evenings excesses, the club sandwich still managed to hit the spot. Whether it was the combination of flavours, or the differing textures or the mere fact that there were two, that’s right, two meats on this culinary master piece made the extra wait all that more bearable.

So imagine my surprise when ordering my beloved ‘club sandwich and chips ‘only to be told it was no longer on the menu. WTF? Surely not? The Club Sandwich, are they sure? This piece of sandwich genius was surely far too valuable an asset for them to discard off the menu? I was bitterly disappointed and even decided to boycott Steers in protest.

So my question to you is, Should Steers bring back the ‘Club Sandwich and Chips’? Vote on this week’s poll.

Who wants a chuckle? Take a look at this misguided attempt at a protest, www.boycott-2010-world-cup.co.nr. Apparently these clowns have 258 Vleisboep fans and counting. I know by posting this piece in a way I am giving the site airtime, but it is well worth a look as the content is highly questionable and hilarious at the same time. These alarmists are nothing more than spiteful fools that abandoned a ship that ain’t sinking.

To quote one of their contributors, Michael Waddacor: “Stupid people shouldn’t breed, especially when they’re sanctimoniously obsessed about always being correct, knowledgeable and even erudite.”

Living in South Africa you’d swear the reasons for world hunger, global warming or little Johnny’s snaggle tooth were one and the same. Racism. That’s right, bigoted racists are the root of all evil in this land. This reasoning is an everyday occurrence and quite frankly is becoming tedious. Surely the dog eared race card needs to be put to rest and allowed a well deserved retirement?

Perhaps a practical approach would benefit all and sundry as opposed to making outlandish accusations and boring us with the same tune. I have as much joy listening to the ‘Best of Kenny G’ every time I step in an elevator or the delightful ‘Greensleeves’ when on hold. Let’s change not only our tune but our approach too.

This week has seen the rift between the ANC Youth League and the SACP widen as the war of words continued with the main contributors being court jester Julius Malema and the “white messiah” Jeremy Cronin.

Growing up we were always told: “Politics is for grown-ups”, but in all honesty the pathetic ‘tit for tat’ way in which these political figures have gone about things is juvenile. The ANC Youth League president even went so far as to send Cronin an SMS airing his disenchantment. Grow up FFS!

Taking up his position at fine leg the ‘Mdingi Express’ was swarmed by expectant wannabees all seeking that coveted autograph. “Tini, Tini, Tini, Tini” rang out as the laaities jostled for the best position at the boundary fence. Us older mob couldn’t care less we had just witnessed a Daryll Cullinan master class and were enjoying a bevvie or two. “He doesn’t deserve to be there,” one commented about the fast bowler’s Test debut. “What about David Terbrugge?” another added.

How naïve those statements proved to be as Makhaya Ntini is about to play in his 100th Test match for the Proteas. Take a bow Makhaya as you go down in history as one of South Africa’s cricketing legends.
