The Bill Cunningham Show coming to The CW this fall

The CW television network and Tribune Broadcasting have reached an agreement for the network to air Tribune's The Bill Cunningham Show as part of its weekday afternoon lineup beginning in September. The show will air Monday through Friday at 2 p.m. CT.

Cunningham, an attorney and nationally syndicated conservative talk radio host, launched his television show on Tribune Broadcasting stations last fall.

“We are very pleased to add The Bill Cunningham Show to our weekday afternoon block,” said John Maatta, The CW's COO. “Bill is a talented host with a fascinating program, and we know he’ll be a terrific asset for The CW and our affiliated stations.”

The CW programming is seen in the Tri-State on what's left of WAZE-CW19 (actually analog channels 4, 5 and 17) in the Evansville market counties; WQWQ/WQTV and KFVS-12.2 in the Paducah-Harrisburg-Cape Girardeau market counties, WBKO-13.2 in Bowling Green, and WBKI in Louisville.

Insight reaches franchise deal with Metro Louisville gov't: Company to pay city $3.5 million

The long-running dispute between Insight Communications and Metro Louisville government is over.

Metro Louisville officials and the company today reached an agreement to renew Insight's franchise agreements in the old city of Louisville and the outlying portions of Jefferson County, Ky. WDRB-TV reports that Insight will pay the city $3.5 million as part of the settlement, which metro officials will use to help offset a $12 million budget deficit.

Insight will also continue to provide internet service to schools and government buildings at no charge, and other customers will see no change in service or benefits.

The new arrangement will last until Time Warner Cable completes its $3 billion takeover of Insight, and another new franchise agreement will be negotiated at that time.

WDRB reports that the Time Warner takeover could be completed "in a matter of weeks." However, Insight spokesman Jason Keller, when contacted this afternoon, declined to comment.

In addition to the new franchise deal, Metro Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer says that he will continue working with Time Warner Cable to ensure that Insight's customer call center in Louisville is retained.

Evansville Rage games to be heard on 3 area radio stations

Evansville's newest professional sports team has announced that its games will be broadcast on three area radio stations this season.

The Evansville Rage indoor football team, which will kick off its season on March 17 against the Indianapolis Enforcers, will be heard on WYFX-106.7 FM and WRCY-1590 AM in Mt. Vernon, as well as WBTO-102.3 FM in Petersburg.

Chris Cooke and Jared Revlett will call all the action all season long on the radio.

The Rage is one of six teams in the Continental Indoor Football League (CIFL). The other teams include the Chicago Vipers, Dayton Silverbacks, Indianapolis Enforcers, Port Huron Patriots and the Saginaw Sting.

WKU Public Radio has new website, smartphone apps

WKU Public Radio, the public radio service of Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, has a new website.

The new site, which I found easy to navigate and also easy on the eyes, gives the visitor all that's needed to experience the best of NPR and WKU's own programming online. It's very good.

And, unlike so many sites nowadays which throw everything but the kitchen sink at the viewer, the notable lack of excessive and distracting clutter on the new website is indeed refreshing.

In addition, smartphone and iPad users will also want to take note of WKU Public Radio's new mobile apps, which can be found here. For phone users, both iOS and Android versions are available.

WKU Public Radio is in its 32nd year of serving Western Kentucky with unique, non-commercial programming that is always of exceptional quality. Four full-power transmitters and one low-power translator serve 1.3 million people across Kentucky as well as southern portions of Indiana and northern portions of Tennessee.

In the Tri-State area, listeners can find WKU Public Radio on the dial at either 88.9 FM (WKYU-FM, Bowling Green) or 89.5 FM (WKPB-FM, Henderson/Owensboro). Other transmitters are located in Somerset and Elizabethtown.

Catholic TV and radio network sues Obama administration over birth control funding

Under the new healthcare law passed last year, employers who provide health insurance coverage for their employees must also pay for birth control and other forms of contraception ... even employers whose religious beliefs forbid birth control in any form.

Now a Birmingham, Ala.-based Catholic television and radio network with a presence on cable TV and at least two radio stations in the Tri-State - EWTN - has sued the Obama administration over that new rule.

Birmingham TV station WBRC-TV reports that EWTN CEO Michael Warsaw says the rule means either his network must do something that is against its beliefs, or drop coverage entirely - but there's another catch. If EWTN drops its employees' insurance plan, the government will fine the network $600,000 in the first year, and a higher amount in succeeding years.

"It's not just a Catholic issue," Warsaw told WBRC's Clare Huddleston. "It impacts all of us who are part of the faith-based community."

Some say all employers should have access to contraception, but Warsaw stresses that it's not just about that. "This is not an issue about contraceptives. This is not an issue to healthcare services. This is first and foremost about freedom of speech and freedom of religion. These are constitutional issue[s] that the court needs to review."

Me-TV to celebrate Valentine's Day with special shows Sunday and Tuesday

This Sunday, Feb. 12, and again on Valentine's Day (Tuesday, Feb. 14), Me-TV will air Valentine's and romance-themed episodes from the network's collection of 'beloved' series.

On Sunday, viewers will see special episodes of The Brady Bunch, Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley, That Girl and many others.

On Tuesday, all of your favorite classic Me-TV shows - from morning until night - will have special episodes as well.

On the national scene, there's quite a bit going on in TV and radio today. Last night, of course, I told you that Fox's House is ending its eight-season run, but there's more. Read on for what's making news elsewhere across the country:

NEWS CORP. REPORTS UPTICK IN REVENUE: Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., which owns the Fox broadcast network, Fox News, Fox Sports and so on, reported its second-quarter financial results on Wednesday, which included revenue of $1.5 billion for the company's television operations, up 11% from $1.4 billion versus the same quarter last year. The TV part of the business brought in $189 million, up $38 million or 25% compared to the same period a year ago. [TVNewsCheck]

MARTIN MULL & FRED WILLARD WORKING ON TV PILOT: Comedians Martin Mull and Fred Willard - best known for Fernwood 2 Night - want to get back on TV, and they're working on a pilot for a new show set in their hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. [Cleveland Plain Dealer]

CNN SUSPENDS ROLAND MARTIN: Just days after sending tweets that were deemed anti-gay, CNN political analyst Roland Martin is off the cable network, suspended indefinitely. Martin later apologized, but it wasn't enough to keep him on TV ... for now. [AP via TVNewsCheck]

HUCK TO TAKE ON RUSH: Former Arkansas Governor, Fox News Channel host and one-time presidential candidate Mike Huckabee will be the latest to take on the undisputed leader of conservative talk radio, Rush Limbaugh. Cumulus Media, which owns more than 500 radio stations nationwide, will debut Huckabee's new radio show on April 2, and it will air opposite Limbaugh's long-running program. House ending its run on Fox after eight seasons

The producers of Fox's popular medical drama, House, have decided the time has come to bring the series to its end.

The show, which stars Hugh Laurie (who is also one of its producers), debuted in November 2004 and is currently in its eighth season.

The AP reports this evening that Laurie and his fellow producers released a statement in which they said they imagined Dr. House as an "enigmatic creature," and that it was best for him to vanish while there was still mystery in the air.

No date has been set for the show's series finale.

Sinclair announces lower revenue for fourth quarter, full year

Sinclair Broadcast Group, which owns Cape Girardeau, Mo. Fox affiliate KBSI-Fox 23 and operates Paducah, Ky. MyNetwork TV affiliate WDKA-My49 under a shared services agreement, today reported financial results for the three months and for all of 2011.

“We ended 2011 on a strong note with core broadcast revenues growing, and our largest advertising category, automotive, up almost 12% in the fourth quarter as compared to the same period in 2010,” commented David Smith, Sinclair's president and CEO. “As we look ahead to 2012, our outlook is for continued ad spending growth by the automotive industry, as well as an increase in political advertising in this presidential election year. In addition, we expect the market for television station transactions to remain active and intend on evaluating potential transactions as they arise.”

Net broadcast revenues from continuing operations were $180.8 million for the three months ended December 31, 2011, a decrease of 4.9% versus the prior year period result of $190.1 million. The company had operating income of $63.5 million in the three-month period, as compared to operating income of $81.5 million in the prior year period. Net income attributable to the company was $22.7 million in the three-month period versus net income of $33.1 million in the prior year period.

The company reported diluted earnings per common share of $0.28 for the three-month period versus diluted earnings per common share of $0.40 in the prior year period.

Net broadcast revenues from continuing operations were $648.0 million for the twelve months ended December 31, 2011, a decrease of 1.2% versus the prior year period result of $655.8 million. The company had operating income of $225.6 million in the twelve-month period, as compared to operating income of $240.8 million in the prior year period. Net income attributable to the company was $75.8 million in the twelve-month period versus net income of $76.1 million in the prior year period.

The company reported diluted earnings per common share of $0.94 in the twelve-month period versus diluted earnings per common share of $0.94 in the prior year period.

Schlesinger, who most recently worked at WNWO in Toledo, Ohio as that station's environmental reporter and morning meteorologist, is the new weekend meteorologist at WDJT in Milwaukee, Wis.

WDJT is owned by Weigel Broadcasting, a Chicago-based broadcasting company which also owns and operates the Me-TV and This TV networks, along with several TV stations in Chicago and Rockford, Ill.; Milwaukee; and South Bend, Ind.

Fiber cut affecting S. Illinois NewWave customers

From NewWave Communications comes word this afternoon that a damaged fiber optic line is affecting service for some of its customers in Southern Illinois.

Affected communities include Carmi, Grayville, Albion, McLeansboro, Valier, Sesser, Fairfield, Benton, Christopher, Buckner, Pinckneyville, Tamaroa, and Du Quoin.

"We are working on this as fast as we can to correct this outage," the company said on its Facebook page.

StreamingMedia.com criticizes quality of Super Bowl web stream

While NBC did a bang-up job with the Super Bowl telecast, the inaugural live web stream of the game was not a success, writes Tim Siglin of StreamingMedia.com.

From quality woes to time lag and limited viewing options, Siglin found much to dislike, although it should be noted that this was, after all, the first time the NFL had tried something like this with its Super Bowl broadcasting partner (in this case, NBC).

Siglin did at least give credit to the league and the network for offering the option.

REMINDER: Channel 14's afternoon lineup changes today

Don't forget: 14 NEWS (WFIE) is making changes to its afternoon programming beginning this afternoon.

Citing the growing popularity of Dr. Oz, the station has moved the show to the all-important 3 p.m. position in the lineup, where it will serve as a lead-in to 14 News at 4 p.m.

In addition to Dr. Oz's relocation, the other afternoon shows on 14 will also be moving:

Jeopardy moves to 2 p.m.
America Now will bookend Jeopardy! at 1:30 and 2:30 p.m.

UPDATE: Super Bowl XLVI DOES set viewership record, after all

UPDATE, 9:35 p.m.: Media Life Magazine reports this evening that, indeed, last night's Super Bowl did indeed become the most-watched television program in history. On average, 111.3 million people tuned in to watch the Giants beat the Patriots.

Super Bowl XLVI becomes the third consecutive Super Bowl to set a new record; until 2010's Super Bowl XLIV, the high-water mark had been the 1983 series finale of M*A*S*H.

PREVIOUSLY: While the numbers aren't all in yet, the overnight ratings are in for last night's Super Bowl on NBC.

The AP reports this morning that the game (which, if you've not heard yet, was won by the New York Giants) pulled in a 47.8 rating and a 71 share, which is just that close to the record tied last year when Green Bay defeated Pittsburgh.

The original record (a 47.9 rating and 68 share) was set, interestingly enough, when the Giants beat the Denver Broncos 25 years ago.

Evansville Basketball with Marty Simmons to air at special time Sunday

Evansville Basketball with Marty Simmons on 14 NEWS will air at a special time tomorrow.

The coach's TV show, which is hosted by Mike Blake, ordinarily airs on Sunday nights, but with the Super Bowl airing on WFIE tomorrow evening, the show will instead air at 10:30 a.m. Central time.

On this week's show, you'll also see a man whose face and voice are familiar to Aces fans (and sports fans in general) across the Tri-State: UE's director of development for athletics and radio voice of the Aces, Lance Wilkerson, is scheduled to make his first appearance on Channel 14.

NFL commish announces Thursday Night Football expansion: 13 games will air on NFL Network next season

UPDATE, 11:55 a.m. MONDAY - From loyal JDTVB reader Michael Shockley comes this update via Facebook:

Minor correction: There will now be 17 Thursday games. NBC gets the Week 1 game as it has had, but the peacock now also gets the Thanksgiving prime-time game after CBS and FOX handle the day games. The NFL Network package now covers 13 Thursdays from Week 2 through Week 15, not including Thanksgiving. (The news about NBC adding Thanksgiving was announced in December, but it kind of flew under the radar as part of the story about the networks extending their deals with the NFL. The deal also specifies that NBC might be able to "flex" games starting earlier in the season, and allows for CBS to air some NFC games and FOX to air some AFC games.)

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced this afternoon that the league is expanding its Thursday Night Football schedule on NFL Network to 13 games for the 2012 season.

The move will allow all of the league's 32 teams to play at least once in prime time somewhere on the schedule.

"Adding these games to the NFL Network schedule will give more players, teams, and cities the prime time stage,” Goodell said during his annual Super Bowl press conference in Indianapolis. "Our fans can now get an early start on the NFL weekend in the season’s first 15 weeks."

By expanding the Thursday schedule, the league will now play a total of 16 Thursday games next season, including the season opener (which will air on NBC) and, of course, the traditional Thanksgiving Day games (on CBS and Fox).

What remains to be seen, however, is whether or not Time Warner Cable (which will more than likely take over Insight Communications before the new season begins) and the league can at long last settle their dispute that has kept NFL Network away from the cable giant's customers here and elsewhere since 2006.

Technical difficulties scratch Local 7's Mater Dei/Forest Park game telecast

I've received word this afternoon that tonight's scheduled Local 7 SportsLive telecast of the boys' basketball game between Mater Dei and Forest Park has been canceled.

The game will be played as scheduled, of course ... it just won't be on TV. If you can't make it out to the game, you'll be able to listen to it on WQKZ-98.5 FM.

I'm told that technical difficulties are the reason for tonight's cancellation. It should be noted that WTVW's broadcast tower was hit by lightning a few days ago, and the strike damaged some very vital equipment. Crews have been working to repair things out there.

The next game that is scheduled to air on Local 7 is the Henderson County/Owensboro game on Feb. 17.

The Original Company buys Fairfield radio stations WFIW-AM/FM, WOKZ

Fairfield, Ill. radio stations WFIW-1390 AM, 104.9 FM and WOKZ-105.9 FM are being sold.

Wayne County Broadcasting announced this week that The Original Company, which is owned by Mark and Saundra Lange of Vincennes, Ind., will take over ownership of the stations once the FCC approves the sale. That approval is expected to take at least 60 days.

The sale price was not released.

The Langes have elected to retain the current staff of the three radio stations, WFIW reported on its website.
