Cafe Fiore Cita, Providing various Italian cuisine such as : Pizza, Pasta, Risotto, and other Italian cuisine that would be your recommendation while you visiting Ubud.
The cafe also providing imported Italian grand coffee and various fresh juices, located on the main street of Jalan Raya Sanggigan which has been the center of culinary area in Ubud. Last visited on December 25, 2011, the cafe were quite cozy with minimalist open air garden design and one big indoor room, combined with the shop which selling a various Kimono and accessories that imported from Japan.
The staffs were friendly and the food was goooooddd!!.. It's a little bit different with other Italian cuisine that you can enjoy in Bali, I mean like the Pizza crust, it was very good, it's a little bit tough inside but crispy outside, topped with soft melting mozzarella cheese and other protein stuff that very match with the crust.

As I wrote above this is the open air garden of the cafe, it quite cozy, especially in the evening.Very suitable to hang with friends or family.The decoration and exposure is also match and don't need to be worry to park your vehicle because the cafe is also providing good place to park your car or motor bike.

We're enjoyed a good time in Cafe Fiore Citta, and writes several articles so it can be your visit also while you have an opportunity to visiting Bali.

The History of Ubud

In many ways, the history of the Ubud area (not so much the modern day town) is the very history of Bali itself.

Ubud has a known history back to the eighth century, when the Javanese Buddhist priest Rsi Marhandya came to Bali from Java, and meditated at the confluence of the two Wos rivers at Campuan, just west of the modern day town centre. A shrine was established and later expanded by Nirartha, the Javanese priest who is regarded as the founder of Bali's religious practices and rituals as we know them today. At this time the area was a centre of natural medicine and healing, and that is how the name Ubud originated: Ubad is ancient Balinese for medicine.

Further temples and monasteries were established over the next 400 hundred years or so. The temple complex at Gunung Kawi, and the cave temples at Goa Gajah (just east and northeast of Ubud), are architectural remains from this period. Many of the dances, drama and rituals still practised in Ubud today, originated at this time. King Airlangga ruled all of Java and Bali in this era, and his seat of government was located in what is now the village of Batuan, just southeast of Ubud.

The Javanese Majapahit kingdom conquered Bali in 1343, and the key final victory was against the Pejeng Dynasty centred at Bedulu, just to the east of Ubud. A great flowering of Balinese culture followed, and the ancestry of Ubud's current day aristocratic families can be traced back to this period. In the sixteenth Century, there was a total transplantation of the Majapahit Kingdom to Bali as the Islamisation of Java forced them eastwards. Power flip-flopped between various dynasties and feudal lords, but the Ubud area remained a very important cog in the various regencies which ruled the island.

In 1900, Ubud became a Dutch protectorate at its own request, and the colonialists interfered little, allowing the traditional arts and culture of the area to remain relatively unchanged. The modern era of Ubud perhaps began in the 1930s, when foreign artists were encouraged by the royal family to take up presence in the town. From their Ubud base, the likes of Walter Spies and Rudolph Bonnet were instrumental in promoting an understanding of Balinese art and culture worldwide. From the 1960s onwards, travellers started to arrive in earnest, mostly intrepid types as the infrastructure was still very limited indeed. Since then, Ubud has developed rapildy into a high profile, top class international destination, whilst still maintaining its integrity as the centre of Balinese art and culture.

The first thing on most people's mind after hearing the news of a disaster like the earthquake in Japan is, What can I do to help?

ShelterBox: The U.K.-based organization, with 18 international affiliates, has launched an online fundraiser for the Japan relief effort. ShelterBox provides assistance to afflicted countries by delivering large utility boxes that contain a shelter and other emergency-relief tools. To give, go to your country's page and click "Donate."

International Medical Corps: To give to this global nonprofit's emergency-response fund, go to its site, fill in your information and select the amount you wish to donate (be sure to note if you want your donation to be a "recurring gift" for future relief efforts).

One of the them is charity event that has been held in Ubud - Bali, by the Japanese community that cooperated with Ubud local peoples. The charity was run very smoothly and all the donator was very enthusiastic.
The committee is also made a few of souvenir so the donator could buy it for donating, one of them is "HOPE T-shirts" which is quite unique and reflect how Bali is also care for the tsunami and earthquake victims in Japan.

Pray for Japan, Charity Event in Ubud (Arma Resort)

It's been a long time since I wrote my last article, this time I will write the report about charity event which aims to help earthquake and tsunami victims that happened lately in Japan. This event was held on April 10, 2011 at Arma resort, Ubud, Bali. With the theme "Pray For Japan" which is organized by Japanese community who lived in Ubud and Ubud local peoples that are sympathetic to the situation in Japan lately.

The event was planed to be start at 15:00 in the open field garden of Arma resort, but the rain was so big and the event was moved to the other stage with the roof still inside Arma. The organizers has worked very hard for the event to run smoothly, it seems not easy to held a fundraising event in the bad weather. I was planed to come to the event around 14:30, but the rain is so heavy and I waited for the rain until 17:00.

Once I arrived at the location, I was quite surprised by the audience that very enthusiastic about the event. The show of the event was very spectacular that performed by Balinese artists that has been very famous in Bali or even in the world such as Balinese choreographer and dancer "I Nyoman Sura", Bamboo percussion and ensemble "Suar Agung" that leaded by Balinese famous art directory "I Ketut Suwentra", and Balinese pop artist "Jun Bintang".

Here some pictures and video that I take during the event.

The Opening that performed by Balinese bamboo percussion "Suar Agung" the percussion was very magic, I guess this is the best bamboo percussion in the world. This orchestra is also performed along the event and collaborated with other artists that participated in this event especially with the dancers.

Awesome dance performed by "I Nyoman Sura", this guy was very successful bring the exotic sense into the stage, he moved like a spirit in sadness and sorrow in the beginning of his performance, and the spirits were show the passion to rise up as the symbolic of the Japanese that have to be rise up to rebuild their country and rise up their spirit of life.

Jun Bintang, this balinese pop singer sung 4 song, 3 song are his own created song, and 1 song is one love by Bob marley. The audiences are very entertained by his performance. His also collaborated with Nyoman sura that performed mask dance as you can see in the picture.

This video is one of Suar Agung Bamboo Orchestra's performance, the title of this performance is "Teruntuhan" the sound is not very good cause the children were also play the bamboo percussion that sell in this event for fundraising. I hope someday I can record the full version of this orchestra when performing.

We are praying for all of you in Japan, hope everything will be better and better, so Japan can rise again as before, or even much better than before

Located at Pengosekan street, Ubud - Bali, open for lunch and dinner from 11 am - 10 pm, Not like the generally restaurant, Taco Casa have a unique design, with the kitchen located in the main room of the restaurant, so the visitors can see the process of making the food directly. This restaurant serves a variety of Mexican cuisine that has its own characteristics in the presentation, the first visit I was very satisfied, welcomed very friendly by the staff and presentation of the foods are very beautiful and delicious. I ordered three kind of cuisine which are their recommendation menu for dinner. Soft Tacos with Beef, 8-Layer Burrito with Beef, and Fajitas With Beef. Beef are my own selection otherwise they provide Veggie, Chicken, Beef, and Shrimp.

Next from the kitchen they have open air space, this restaurant is also providing free WiFi connection and a lot of visitors enjoying their time in this space enjoying the foods while working with their laptop.

My first order, 8-Layer Burrito with Beef, this menu may be my favorite. very soft tortilla warping the red or cilantro lime rice, red or black beans, real cheddar or mozzarella cheese, fresh shredded lettuce, pico de gallo salsa, guacamole and sour cream.

My second order was Fajitas with Beef. Combination of Marinated meat, grilled with onion, bell peppers and wrapped with flour tortillas and served with guacamole, black beans and sour cream. The black beans was very fresh and creamy, it's remind me the Brazilian Feijão Preto, Very creamy and tasty.

I ask to the staff to add more chili and it very goooooddd, burn your tongue a little bit, but the black beans will calm it down, what a good combination.

One of my favorite restaurant in Ubud, If you decide to go for Italian food in Ubud, Pizza Bagus is just the right choice ! A perfect family place and probably the only real Italian restaurant in Ubud where you can find a large choice of kids food. located not too far from the center of Ubud in the Pengosekan area, the restaurant is also provide delivery service free charge for Ubud area, so you can just call this restaurant and ask them to deliver a delicious pizza to your place.
Last time I visited this restaurant I ordered two kind of pizzas, which are my favorite Pizza in this restaurant. it was "Pizza Sole" and "Pizza Salami and Peperoni" with Bintang beer ( my compulsory orders ^^ ) . I also took a few pictures of the restaurant and foods, so it could be your recommendation while you visit Ubud.

The main hall of the restaurant, designed quite simple and clean with a little touch of Italian decoration, here you can also enjoy several family games like dart game, table foot ball, and some toys for children.

Balinese Dance in Ubud, Bali

Wow,.. That was impressive! that's all that i could said after watch the dance show in Ubud, Bali.
The dance was performed in "Puri Saren" (Ubud Palace) near the Ubud market, it performed by 11 Balinese professional dancers that wearing different costume and portray different characters. The stage was not very specials, it just a simple decoration in the courtyard of the palace, but they could make the situation very unusual with Balinese traditional music in the background along the performance, they really deliver the emotions to the audiences.

The stories of the dance is come from epic hindu texts like the infused with local island myths. You can enjoy the dance almost everyday starts from 07:30pm in Puri Saren Agung, but sometimes it will be moved to another places depends on weather condition or Palace activities. Legong Keraton Dance
The Story is a fable of mahabarata epic. The story starts with Raksasa Newatakawaca causing great trouble in the heavens. Raksasa was trying to destroy the world and havens. In response, the God of Indra ordered the angels Supraba and Arjuna to fight Raksasa Newatakawaca. Before the fight love sparked between the angels Supraba and Arjuna while they were at place of Raksasa Newatakawaca. Finally, with the magic of Supraba and the cleverness of Arjuna Raksasa Newatakawaca was killed.

Truna Jaya Dance
This dance expresses changing moods characteristic of the transitional period experienced by the youth of Bali. The movement expresses the enthusiastic energy of youth.

Oleg Tamulilingan Dance
A modern dance choreographed by the late Mario in 1952, Oleg Tambulilingan has become a popular addition to the repertoire of dances included in a Legong performance. Originally, it was danced by only one girl and called Oleg, a general term meaning the swaying of a dancer. Later, a male part was added to make it a duet, and the dance gained a new theme depicting two bumblebees (tambulilingan) flirting in a garden.

Topeng Arsa Wijaya Dance
Topeng is the Balinese word of mask. people classify masks into two different categories according to their expressions. Topeng alus, or the "Soft Mask", represents the tender, lenient and gentle character, while the antagonist is topeng keras or the "Tought Mask" representing the hard and relentless character.

Baris Dance (Warrior Dance)
The marching warrior dance "Baris" is widely known as an improvised dance in which the lead dancer is accompanied and followed by the others. When they all are together they moved as one unified entity. the dance represents their preparations for going into battle.

Potong Gigi Ceremony (Teeth filing ceremony), Bali

After a while living in Bali, I finally got a chance to witness the ceremony of Potong Gigi (Teeth filing ceremony) done by my friend before her wedding ceremony with Balinese local man.

In the Balinese belief system, the ceremony helps people rid themselves of the invisible forces of evil - teeth are the symbol of lust, greed, anger, insobriety, confusion and jealousy. Filing the teeth therefore renders someone both more physically and more spiritually beautiful, as well as symbolising the rite of passage for an adolescent into adulthood.

Ceremonies are usually held between 4.00 am to 6.00 am, before the sun rises, and are accompanied by religious songs. After the tooth filing ceremony, the teenager is considered to be a mature adult. In recent years, families have taken to holding their children's ceremonies in a group in order to economise.

The preparation before the ceremony, my friend is in makeup by the professional Balinese makeup artist. it takes 45 to 60 minutes for the face makeup only.

Finally they begin to put the Balinese traditional dress on, it takes 30 to 45 minutes to put the dress on her.

The ceremony was led by "Mangku" (chosen priest), before Mangku began the ceremony he asked her to pray for the ceremony run smoothly.

When the filing is finished, the astringent betel pepper leaf (base) is rubbed on the ends of the teeth, and then the 'pedanda' places various other soothing, healing tinctures on the end of the initiate's tongues. The coconut shell receptacle of filing debris and saliva is then buried behind the ancestral shrine lest it be occupied by evil spirits.

Warung Pulau Kelapa | Cheap and unique Indonesian restaurant In Ubud

Warung Pualu kelapa is the new restaurant in Ubud, Bali. The restaurant is designed with Traditional Javanese style with the texture of old javanese carving around the walls. This restaurant is very unique and antique, I visited this restaurant last night, and quite surprise with the decoration that they made inside the restaurant, They use pure Javanese traditional furniture with classic photos as wall decoration around the wooden walls and a few wooden statues standing in the front of the entrance. This is the entrance of the restaurant, there is a little garden with small path in the front of the restaurant. The name board of the restaurant is made by the local artist using 100% wood as the material.

All furnitures in the restaurant are made of wood with a few wall hangings that give the impression of a classic building plus the wooden walls that surrounds the room which really makes this place very antique.

The price of the foods and drinks is very cheap, they provide various Indonesian foods and even some of the menu is only available at certain places in Indonesia. like "Pecel Blitar" and "Rujak Petis" with price Rp.12.000 or it's about USD1.3 per portion.

I ordered various menu to test the foods like Pecel Blitar, Rujak Petis, Nasi campur, Soto Ayam kampung, Tahu Petis, Tempe penyet, and Nasi Lodeh.

The Soto ayam kampung is good enough but a little bit tasteless, so I put a little salts and peppers to make my own taste.

The Nasi Campur, Nasi Lodeh, Tahu Petis are very good, it just the same taste as the original, and the Tempe penyet was very impressive, they mix delicious east Java style of "sambal" (Chili Sauce) with fried Tempe in the top of the sambal.

Indonesian foods is familiar with spicy taste, but in this restaurant they reduce the spicy taste so the other peoples who do not like spicy can also enjoy these dishes. But for you who like to enjoy the dishes with original Indonesian taste, they have an extra sambal that can be order separately to add more spicy flavor into your foods.

Kecak Dance With Funny Makeup and Body Painting

My visit to friend's village was very interesting, I was invited to see Balinese kecak dance that perform by the youth peoples in Celuk village, Banjar Cemenggaon. Actually I enjoyed the kecak dance performance for many times since i live in Bali, but they said "this is not usual" this make me very interest to see the dance in their village.

Once i arrive, they still make a preparation for the show and i was surprise for what they doing for the preparations. Usually kecak dance is perform by mens without using any makeup on their face or body, now i realize why they said this is not usual, they use funny makeup on their face and body, and the dance is a little bit different with the usual kecak dance that i ever seen. check out the picture and feel free to laugh

Their preparation before the show, using water paint to coloring face and body. The paint that being use is very safe for the skin, so there is no side effects after use.

They also have a makeup artist for the show, actually he is not a professional makeup artist but he is very helpful to take the place.

The show is very impressive and funny, they perform the dance for about 3 hours, with different chapters that performed by a different character. A little bit different with the usual kecak dance, they also perform some funny scenes during the show.

After the show they still have a lot energy, i wondering what they consume to be very active. They perform the dance for about 3 hours, and still have a lot energy to make visitors laugh after the show.

What i got from the event is, they telling a very valuable lesson to us, that the skills of a person is not limited to what is seen by the eye, but further we can be creative without any limits ...

The Story of Barong Dance

Barong Dance is one of the distinctive arts community of Bali, where Barong it self is symbolic of goodness with shape like a lion. in Barong dance it tells the story about battle between Barong and Rangda, Rangda is a symbolic of badness with shape like a giant with a big canine. Both of them is a reflection of human action in daily life with the good and bad behavior, or in Balinese it's call Dharma and Adharma.

Barong is like a doll which being moved by person inside it, Barong is very heavy, this dance usually performed by two big mans that lift and moving the barong from the inside.
The story goes that Rangda, the mother of Erlangga, the King of Bali in the tenth century, was condemned by Erlangga's father because she practiced black magic. After she became a widow, she summoned all the evil spirits in the jungle, the leaks and the demons, to come after Erlangga. A fight occurred, but she and her black magic troops were too strong that Erlangga had to ask for the help of Barong. Barong came with Erlangga's soldiers, and fight ensued. Rangda casted a spell that made Erlangga soldiers all wanted to kill themselves, pointing their poisoned keris into their own stomachs and chests. Barong casted a spell that turned their body resistant to the sharp keris. At the end, Barong won, and Rangda ran away.

Barong is probably the most well known dance. It is also another story telling dance, narrating the fight between good and evil. This dance is the classic example of Balinese way of acting out mythology, resulting in myth and history being blended into one reality.

To make lawar, vegetables are chopped, then given a mixture of herbs and spices, to add flavor and taste, lawar added with minced meat. Meat only as a complement, Balinese local peoples usually mix lawar with blood to make a red lawar. The 32nd annual Bali Arts Festival performances in 2010 will be held a month from June 12 until July 10, 2010, and will be opened by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, involving seven countries and 20 provinces in Indonesia. Seven Countries that participated in Balinese art festival this year that will showing art and culture are America, Japan, Korea, Belgium, Canada, India and Sweden. And 20 areas in Indonesia that will be involved in Balinese art festival are Malang, East Java, Gorontalo, West Jakarta, West Sulawesi,etc..

Balinese art festival this year takes the theme SUDAMALA which means explore the purity of conscience. The opening will be preceded by a music show, called Adi merdangga, Adi merdangga is Balinese music band which all the personnel is born from STSI (High school art of Indonesia) and followed by a parade of art and culture by each district in Bali, followed by participants from outside Bali and international participants, the festival will be centered in Art center that located in Denpasar and every day will hold a show of art and culture.

Tirta Empul Temple

Tirta Empul temple is located in Tampak siring sub-district, 30 minutes from Ubud and it's about 1 hour from Bali international Airport. I was visited to Tirta Empul Temple in the right time, when local peoples was doing "melukat" ceremony, melukat ceremony is a ritual to clean the body from negative element by washing their body in holy water that flowing from water spring inside the temple.

The holy water in Tirta Empul temple is have a lot of meaning for Balinese local peoples, there is more than 10 water spring that flowing to Tirta Empul temple, and each water spring have a different purpose and meaning.

The Tirta Empul Temple includes the traditional Balinese split gate along with shrines to Shiva, Vishnu, Braham, Mt. Batur, and Indra. There is also a large open pavilion in the main courtyard, useful for relaxing in the shade.But the main attraction here is a long rectangular pool carved of stone, filled with koi and fed by the sacred spring via 12 fountains. Worshippers first make an offering at the temple, then climb into the main pool to bathe and pray. Many collect the holy water in bottles to take home. Nearby there are two smaller pools fed by the spring.

Overlooking the temple on a hill above is a suprisingly modern building: the Government Palace, built in 1954. Originally a residence for Dutch officials, it was later used by former President Soekarno during his frequent trips to Bali.
