Dancehall star Shaggy bearly recognized by new Generation - replacing major lazer on a show

At the show, he will perform alongside rapper ASAP Rocky after Major Lazer dropped out for a last-minute commitment in France last week. While many students were surprised by the choice, those interviewed said they were excited to revisit some of the hits Shaggy released during their childhoods. Shaggy’s website and Facebook page confirm his May 17 performance on Gold Coast lawn. Programming Board, however, declined to comment on Shaggy’s selection. Shaggy, born Orville Richard Burrell, is a former Marine who fought on the frontlines in the Persian Gulf War. His stage name was inspired by his shaggy hair and the name of Scooby-Doo’s companion in the popular animated cartoon franchise. Shaggy is primarily known for his hit song “It Wasn’t Me” (2000) and won a Grammy in 1996 for his album “Boombastic.” Two of his songs reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and “Hot Shot” (2000) was certified six times platinum in the United States. Matt Garczynski ’14 was surprised Programming Board chose an artist who he has not heard mentioned in over a decade. “He’s not relevant, he’s way in the past,” Garczynski said. “But it’ll still be fun in the way it would be if they brought back a band like Blink-182.” Garczynski said Shaggy still has name recognition and will make for an interesting pairing with rapper ASAP Rocky. Since Shaggy played a “significant part” in her childhood, Kelsey Sipple ’16 said she is excited to feel nostalgic about the past. Many students interviewed also did not know much about the singer. Jacob Savos ’16 said he was unfamiliar with Shaggy. “I don’t know who he is, but I’m sure he’ll still be a good addition to the show,” Savos said. “I think the majority of people will definitely like his style of music. All the reactions I’ve seen have been very positive and people have been very excited.” Maya Herm ’13 said Shaggy is an upgrade from last year’s Green Key weekend, when Programming Board did not host an official concert. Herm said she thinks Shaggy is a bigger name than Major Lazer. Myles McMurchy ’16 said Shaggy’s style might not appeal to all students. “I think he will appeal less than Major Lazer because Major Lazer is at the forefront of the dance and electronica music that is really popular right now, whereas Shaggy is a reggae artist, which is not as mainstream,” he said. McMurchy added that he thinks Shaggy’s music is “a lot of fun” and the student body will have as much fun watching Shaggy perform as they would at a Major Lazer performance. Shaggy is credited with making reggae music more accessible to the American public at the turn of the century. By 2001, his album “Hotshot” reached the top of the charts over albums from major artists, including Jennifer Lopez and The Beatles. Rolling Stone magazine’s David Fricke called Shaggy “Dancehall reggae’s genial ambassador” in 1997. Shaggy’s 2002 and 2005 albums failed to garner as much commercial success as his previous efforts. Recently, he has been focusing on live performances and concerts over making albums. Shaggy will perform at 7 p.m. on Friday on Gold Coast lawn.

It was recently reported by AFP that Canada's navy was red-faced Wednesday after it was revealed that two of its warships had an embarrassing brush with Jamaica's former prime minister on a fishing trip in the latter's own waters last year. Canadian naval reservists were participating in an American-led anti-drug trafficking operation in the Caribbean when they intercepted former Jamaican premier Bruce Golding's fishing trawler on March 27, 2012. HMCS Goose Bay and HMCS Kingston pulled up alongside what Jamaican officials recently described to Canadian media as a vessel with "a retired senior political figure on board." They also said the warships were in Jamaican waters without permission or knowledge. Golding, an avid fisherman who was prime minister from 2007 to 2011, meanwhile confirmed to radio station Nationwide 90FM that he was the official who had the run-in with the Canadian navy. During the encounter, one of the maritime coast defense vessels reportedly fired its weapons. But Golding said he was not harassed, nor searched. He told Nationwide 90FM that a small inflatable speedboat carrying 10 men was dispatched from one of the warships and "came directly alongside me, at which time I discovered that they appeared to be foreigners, they were all white people... and they were all in uniform." The Canadian military was not immediately available for comment. But officials told Postmedia News the warships had been mistakenly operating in Jamaican territorial waters, and blamed the error on outdated navigational charts that "did not accurately reflect the territorial waters of Jamaica." amc/adm

Urban gossip site MediaTakeOut first broke the rumors on Wednesday (December 28), claiming that Beyonce booked out an entire floor at the luxury St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital in New York City ahead of her arrival.
According to MTO, a nurse at the hospital confirmed the story, stating that they are expecting a high profile celebrity.

Jubilant PNP supporters converged on the party's Old Hope Road headquarters on Thursday night as news spread that victory had been achieved. As the crowd swelled, the Party President flanked by several of the winning candidates gave her victory speech. Mrs. Simpson-Miller said there is a lot of work ahead for the incoming Government adding that her team of Ministers will be installed shortly. She called for a united Jamaica as it embarks on a path to growth and development. “Work with us as we will be working with you. Consultation, dialogue, working together to move this country forward. We’ll be working for development with job creation and you will hear more from us,” she said. Mrs. Simpson-Miller also promised to lead a government of transparency. “We will tell you as it is, we will hide nothing from you. CROSS ROADS (Observer): WITH some 30 minutes to the close of the polls the Electoral Office of Jamaica is reporting that some 42.35 percent of Jamaicans or 697,937 individuals have cast their votes as at 3 this afternoon in the 2011 General Parliamentary Elections.

In the meantime the EOJ has said the results from 341 stations are outstanding. There are a total 6629 polling stations.

The Electoral Office of Jamaica is reporting that some 29.76 percent of Jamaicans or 490,509 individuals have cast their votes as at 3 this afternoon in the 2011 General Parliamentary Elections.

A total 1,648,036 million electors are expected to go to the polls today. Voting began at 7:00 am and is expected to close at 5:00 pm today.

The polls will open at 7 a.m. today and will close at 5 p.m. The Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) says some 6,629 polling stations will be opened in the 63 constituencies across the island. The EOJ will be using the electronic voter identification and ballot issuing system in eight constituencies today. The EOJ’s public education officer, Christin Senior, says the electronic voter identification and ballot issuing system is being used in constituencies where there is a high risk of voter irregularities. The system will be fully rolled out in St. Catherine Eastern, St. Andrew West Central, St. Andrew South Eastern, Kingston Central, and St. Andrew Western. Senior says the system will be used only at some sections of St. Andrew North West and St. Andrew North Central. ust over 1.6 million electors are on the voters list and 150 candidates are contesting the election. The Jamaica Labour Party and the People’s National Party each nominated candidates in all 63 constituencies. KINGSTON (Gleaner): One of the attorneys for popular Jamaican artiste Vybz Kartel, yesterday released a letter over the entertainer's signature dismissing media reports that they have been sacked. "I have not authorised any change in my legal team in whom I have the fullest confidence," read a section of the three-paragraph letter signed by the artiste, whose given name is Adidja Palmer. The letter blindsided attorney-at-law Hannah Harris-Barrington, who yesterday repeated claims she made in a radio interview on Monday that she has been retained to represent the entertainer. Harris-Barrington, who is also the attorney for another jailed dancehall star Ninja Man - given name Desmond Ballentyne - told The Gleaner she has two letters, given to her by Palmer during separate jailhouse visits last week, to support her claim. "I really don't know what is happening," she said. Despite this, Harris-Barrington said she was willing to step away from the case. "If that (Palmer's letter) has today's (yesterday's) date then that must mean he has given them back the case and that's fine," she said. Palmer, in the letter released through his attorney Christian Tavares-Finson, said: "I have not retained or engaged the services of Hannah Harris-Barrington to represent me in any matter and she is not authorised to speak on my behalf or to discuss my case." His letter added "This serves to confirm that I have retained the services of attorneys-at-law Tom Tavares-Finson, Michael Deans and Chris Tavares-Finson to represent me in all the matters for which I am currently before the court." WASHINGTON (AP) — The State Department is warning Americans around the world of the potential for terrorist attacks against U.S. interests following the exposure of an alleged Iranian plot to assassinate Saudi Arabia's ambassador to the United States. In a new worldwide travel alert issued late Tuesday, the department said the foiled scheme could be a sign that Iran has adopted a "more aggressive focus" on terrorist activity. It said Iranian-sponsored attacks could include strikes in the United States, where the alleged plot against the Saudi envoy was supposed to have taken place, as well as other countries. "The Department of State alerts U.S. citizens of the potential for anti-U.S. actions following the disruption of a plot, linked to Iran, to commit a significant terrorist act in the United States," it said in the warning that expires on Jan. 11, 2012. "The U.S. government assesses that this Iranian-backed plan to assassinate the Saudi ambassador may indicate a more aggressive focus by the Iranian government on terrorist activity against diplomats from certain countries, to include possible attacks in the United States," the alert said. Anoka County sheriff's investigators say the neighbour called to report he had surveillance footage of Amanda Rose Owens sneaking into his East Bethel home through a dog door. The St Paul Pioneer Press reports that the neighbour set up the camera after $300 and several items were stolen. Investigators say Owens admitted she had broken in three times. She said she need money so she could pay for 20 to 30 pornographic DVDs she bought. Owens was charged Wednesday with second-degree burglary. She does not have a listed phone number and it wasn't clear Saturday if she had an attorney.

NEW YORK, (WAll Street Journal) By VAUHINI VARA California Governor Jerry Brown on Saturday finished signing the California Dream Act, under which California students who are undocumented immigrants will qualify for state-funded financial aid for college. The controversial bill is the highest-profile act to expand undocumented students' access to higher education after a federal Dream Act, which would have given undocumented students a path to short-term permanent residency status, failed last year to attract enough support in Congress. "The Dream Act benefits us all by giving top students a chance to improve their lives and the lives of all of us," Mr. Brown said. Under current law, undocumented students pay resident tuition rates if they have graduated from a California high school and affirmed that they are in the process of applying to legalize their immigration status. Starting January 1, 2013, those students will be eligible to apply for state-funded Cal Grants and other public aid. The legislation builds on a previous bill signed into law in July, which makes financial aid from private sources available to the same pool of students. The two laws are collectively known as the California Dream Act. The California Department of Finance estimates that 2,500 students will qualify for Cal Grants as a result of the bill, at a cost of $14.5 million. The overall Cal Grant program is funded at $1.4 billion, meaning that 1% of all Cal Grant funds will be potentially impacted. The bill's passage comes as several states have revisited their immigration laws in the wake of last year's defeat of the federal Dream Act. In Alabama, a controversial new law lets officials check the immigration status of students in public schools, which the federal government is seeking to block. Meanwhile, Illinois in August passed its own Dream Act, which gives undocumented students access to privately funded grants. But California's bill is especially significant because it is the nation's largest state and home to far more undocumented residents than any other. It is also the first bill that uses public funds to help undocumented students. "As a result of the failure of Congress to pass the Dream Act, we now have both pro-immigrant youth legislation and anti-immigrant youth legislation" that states are pursuing on their own, said Kent Wong, an immigration expert at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Stem cell research finds Cure for Aids

WASHINGTON — A US cancer patient who received a stem cell transplant has been cured of HIV, said a team of German doctors whose research was published in the peer-reviewed journal Blood on Wednesday.

"Our results strongly suggest that cure of HIV has been achieved in this patient," said the study.

The results suggest the first such cure for the virus that causes AIDS, though experts caution it may not be safe or feasible for the wider population.

The subject of the study, an American in his 40s who is often referred to as the "Berlin patient," received a stem cell transplant as treatment for acute myeloid leukemia in 2007.

The stem cells came from a donor with a rare gene mutation that makes it impossible to contract HIV.

The study showed no sign of HIV more than two years after the transplant, even though the patient had ceased anti-retroviral therapy to suppress HIV.

The research team was led by Kristina Allers and Gero Hutter at Charite - University Medicine Berlin.

Commenting on the findings to the Miami Herald, US AIDS researcher Margaret Fischl said the process was too radical for use in the general public, and carries harsh side effects, but showed promise toward developing other cures.

"I would call this a functional cure," Fischl was quoted as saying. "It's on the level and a very remarkable case. But would we do this with an HIV patient? No."

The journal Blood is a publication of the American Society of Hematology.

German man castrates teenage daughter's 57-year-old boyfriend

Helmut Seifert, 47, an ethnic German originally from Russia, was enraged when he heard his 17-year-old daughter was having a relationship with Phillip Genscher, 57.

He went to police in the town of Bielefeld where he lives but officers said they were powerless to intervene.

"The man then recruited two work colleagues at his factory and then went to the house of the victim," said police.

The man was close to bleeding to death but managed to call police. His life was saved but he remains a eunuch for life.

Seifert pleaded guilty and will be on trial for attempted murder next year. But he has remained silent on who his accomplices were.

He told police: "I received a phone call anonymously that my daughter was involved with a guy 40 years older than her. You said you couldn't stop him – so I did.

"I saw it as my duty as a father."

Gregory Isaacs body was flown to his native home Jamaica on Thursday for funeral service which is scheduled for the 20th of November at the National Indoor centre the same place where Babyface Edmonds will be having his show tomorrow. The burial will be at Dovcot....the family would have preferred the heroes park site. Well wishers can view Gregory's body on the 19th of November at the same venue as the funeral service. Gregory apparently died from lung cancer in England on October 25, 2010.

A wake (nine night) was held for Gregory Isaacs in London on Tuesday night. There were no indication of any of his wives were present, but chances are at least one them would be. It has been more or less confirmed that Gregory Isaacs apparently had two wives with one being Jamaican, "the original wife" since the early 1980's and the other wife is his recent spouse who is of British origin. His first wive lives in Jamaica did not have any children for him but took care of ten out of twelve children that Gregory had with various women. Even though the marriage frizzled it appeared that no official divorce came through. There appear to be no serious talk of claims to estate as yet however it is matter time before the wives would have to "face the music".
Present at the wake were the likes of Dennis Alcapone and Singer A.J. Franklyn who had great praises for the late great singer.
There will be a memorial service in London next week after which the body will be flown to Jamaica on Thursday the 11th for a state funeral and burial according to reports.

Word out is that Grogery Isaacs family wants the singer to be buried in the National Heroes Park. This they say is due to the immense contribution by the late singer to the Jamaican Culture and Country itself. Heroes park is a dedicated area in Kingston, reserved for the burial of national heroes, Prime Ministers and cultural icons such as Louis Bennett, Ranny Williams and Dennis Brown who were all buried there.
The government has indicated that they have not received any application for Isaacs to be buried at the park.
Though the late Gregory Isaacs was a great Reggae singer he didn't have a spec free life style. According to wickipedia Isaacs served a six month prison sentence for firearm possession in the early 1980's and was said to be involved in drug dealings. The singer was said to have been arrested at least 27 times- now that's a bad MF. Rumour has it that his criminal record and additional unconfirmed speculation that the singer had two wives were put forward as reason for the singer not having an advantage to be allowed in the park. Some are saying if Dennis Brown is there he should be there.

Freddie McGregor Son ..or Chino got his identity robbed recently according to reports. Chino was a victim of breach of privacy, an hacked email. Someone broke into Chino's email and sent messages indicating that he lost his travel documents and credit card and he is stuck in England and is in desperate need of money to barrow, even providing an account number to lodge funds . According to the report Chino the BIGSHIP Singjay indicated that this is totally false and is making his fans, friends and well wishers that this is a scam.
