Hot Chip

Hot Chip is back with the stunning fourth studio album One Life Stand, to be released on February 9, 2010 on Astralwerks.

One Life Stand is a full-blooded leap into the unknown, an album that is awash with Hot Chip's trademark creative bravery and a searing emotional intensity from first track to last. One Life Stand is by far Hot Chip's most complete body of work to date, an album that is more cohesive and more soulful than 2007's ambidextrous Made In The Dark and more ambitious than 2005's Mercury nominated and Grammy award winning The Warning. One Life Stand is an album that establishes Hot Chip as one of the most relevant and creative bands of our era.

With Joe Goddard, Alexis Taylor, Felix Martin, Al Doyle, and Owen Clarke at the helm it's no surprise that they borrow, create and take inspiration from a plethora of genres. One Life Stand sees a proliferation of influences that include the burgeoning U.K. funky scene, soul music, modern R&B, northern soul, gospel, golden age electronica, house, as well as the sounds of Arthur Russell, Prince and Theo Parish - which all sit effortlessly alongside the band's signature pop aesthetics, wild electronics, off kilter beats, and intoxicating musical experimentation in a way that only Hot Chip can execute.

Fans will have the chance to pre-purchase the album on Amazon starting this week. Check out the Hot Chip artist store in the coming weeks for exclusive streams and webisodes.

Paul McCartney

Following a massive tour of the U.S. this summer, Paul McCartney today announces his first European Tour since 2004. This December will see "Macca" play seven special arena shows across Europe, culminating with his first ever public performance at London's O2 Arena, which will be his only U.K. date of this year. Other firsts on this tour will include shows at Berlin's O2 World venue and Dublin's The O2. Paul's legendary live performances are a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience some of the greatest moments in music from the last 50 years.

Paul commences his tour in Hamburg - a city he is very familiar with. Incredibly, it's now 49 years since The Beatles historic visit, which created rock folklore and put Hamburg on the map as a musical Mecca for hundreds and thousands of music pilgrims over the years (for more on Hamburg check our Reeperbahn review here). This will be Paul's first time back in Hamburg (as well as Arnhem, Cologne and Dublin) since his 2003 Back In The World tour. Meanwhile, the people of Berlin will get their first Paul McCartney concert in 16 years, since 1993's New World Tour. December will take Paul back to Paris for the first time since he played an intimate club show at the Olympia in 2007.

.
London's O2 Arena will host Paul's final show of 2009, where he will bring the year to an end on a high. This will be his only live show in the U.K. this year. Paul's last U.K show was a massive sellout concert at Anfield Stadium in 2008. At the time the Liverpool Echo wrote, "If Anfield had a roof, Macca would have blown it off." The O2 Arena does in fact have a roof, so it's set to be a massive night of excitement and rock 'n' roll, Macca style. Although this is Paul's first public performance at the O2 Arena he is very familiar with the venue. In 2004, before the O2 Arena was up and running as the world's greatest music venue, Paul used the Millennium Dome (as it was known then) for rehearsals for his massive stadium 04 Summer Tour. The tour ended with Paul headlining the Glastonbury Festival which has gone down in rock history as one of the greatest festival moments ever.

Speaking about the tour, Paul said: "This is my chance to bring our current show home to where it all began. Starting in Hamburg, ending in London, and rocking everywhere in between, I'm very much looking forward to ending the year on a high."

2009 has been an amazing year for Paul. He kicked it off by teaming up with Dave Grohl to perform "I Saw Her Standing There" at the Grammys, where he was also nominated for two awards. In April, Paul performed in New York at the David Lynch Foundation's benefit concert, Change Begins Within, where he was joined on stage by Ringo Starr for a special finale. Paul also headlined the Coachella Festival (his first U.S. festival appearance) and performed a show to mark the opening of The New Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, a gig which sold out in seven seconds, setting a new sales record with tickets selling at a rate of 600 per second. July 11 took Paul to Halifax, Nova Scotia for his first ever concert there, which took place on the Halifax Commons. The mayor of Halifax described the show as the largest and most exciting concert in its 260 year history.

Following Halifax, Paul embarked on a five-week tour of the U.S.; Summer Live '09. The tour commenced with the inaugural run of shows at New York's Citi Field Stadium - the site of the former Shea Stadium where The Beatles made history in 1965 when they played a concert that set the precedent for the modern day stadium rock show. Critics hailed the Citi Field performances, seen by over 120,000 people, as the concert experience of a lifetime. The tour concluded in Dallas on August 19.

Those unable to make the European shows this Christmas can re-live the Macca magic with Good Evening New York City, a multi-disc CD/DVD featuring performances recorded at New York's Citi Field from Paul's Summer Live '09 tour.

We caught up with most of these artists to help shed light on just how deep Leftover Salmon's influence runs. So, fire up that audio player at the top of this article (featuring all the songs we're giving away in Part 2) and dig into some Leftover Salmon.

JamBase: Thinking about Leftover Salmon's 20 year history, how do you feel they have most significantly influenced the music world?

Vince Herman & John Bell - Leftover Salmon by Weintrob

JB: I notice a lot of new, and very cool, bands on the scene that have turned traditional bluegrass instrumentation up a notch. It wakes you up to the energy of our most recent generation. Leftover Salmon was working in that world years ago. I believe they are a crucial link to keeping bluegrass roots alive and evolving.

JamBase: In what way has Leftover Salmon influenced your own music or perhaps your life?

JB: Listening to and playing with the boys are genuine vehicles for having a good time. They are fun and funny to hang with, and I've never witnessed an ego-based moment in any of them. They are a rare reminder that music is best expressed with selfless awareness.

JamBase: On 9/9/2000 at Planet Salmon in Lyons, CO, you sat in with the band on a big "Nobody's Fault But Mine" jam with Jeff Austin, Pete Sears, and John Cowan. We are featuring this song in our live album giveaway and are wondering if you have any memories of that night, perhaps even the songs?

JB: At Planet Salmon I remember riding through the audience in a wagon wearing some freaky, wizard-y costume. I think we were throwing trinkets out to The People, Mardi Gras style. Mostly, I was trying to keep from falling off that particular wagon.

I was also invited to play "Nobody's Fault But Mine" with Salmon on a studio album - we did a couple run throughs, two live takes without overdubs, and picked one as the track. All of life should be that uncomplicated. I was truly honored to be included. I think there was beer involved. Col. Bruce Hampton was my chaperone.

Jeff Austin: Leftover Salmon has given so many young and upcoming artists - like I guess I once was - so much hope that if you just make music that has a great deal of originality, people will be drawn to it. Audiences will embrace you in a whole different way if you show them your heart and soul. That's what Salmon has given me over my time seeing them - a lot of heart and soul. And a lot of guts, too.

JamBase: On 9/9/2000 at Planet Salmon in Lyons, CO, you sat in with the band on a big "Nobody's Fault But Mine" jam with John Bell, Pete Sears, and John Cowan. We are featuring this song in our live album giveaway and are wondering if you have any memories of that night, perhaps even the songs?

Jeff Austin: The Salmon guys have always been so encouraging to me in a lot of ways - from Vince helping me book the first Yonder tours, to Drew selling me one of his mandolins - but, I'll never forget the early days when they would invite me up onstage, especially at Salmonfest. Yonder hadn't been a band but about a year, and Vince pulls me up and tells me to come play, and there I am standing next to him and John Bell. For someone who was just coming up and trying to make it in the music scene it was a huge showing of generosity through music. They didn't have to invite me up to play. They weren't doing it to gain anything; they just always wanted to share the music that they made. They were always so unselfish with the music, and they still are. Those early invites to sit in, to meet and play with some amazing musicians, it had an impact on me I'm not sure I can explain. It was like a huge pat on the back; a showing of belief and confidence from a group of guys I had - and still have - so much respect for. It is quite a personally moving experience every time I get asked to sit in with Leftover Salmon, and it's really fucking fun, too.

John Cowan

JamBase: Thinking about Leftover Salmon's 20 year history, how do you feel they have most significantly influenced the music world?

Leftover Salmon by Eric Abramson

John Cowan: To me, Salmon has always been a wondrous, curious mix of serious musicianship and the revelry of vaudeville, merry pranksters and carnival. I think we - the audience/the world - need to laugh while our souls are being opened by heartfelt music. The obvious answer to this is that Salmon brought not only their own music with mandolin/fiddle/banjo but John Hartford, NGR, Hot Rize, etc. to kids who perhaps never would have had the access to it.

JamBase: In what way has Leftover Salmon influenced your own music or perhaps your life?

John Cowan: I came from a place or school of thought where music, the study of it and performing it, is very self-centered, almost like jazz or classical. Seeing Salmon over the years and the way they literally "inter-acted" with their audience was really good for a lot of us old fuckers. It taught me that staring down at my feet with my hair covering my face and my eyes closed in concentration is a much harder, longer way to include the audience than making a conscious decision to let the audience be part of not only the "creative moment" but, in fact, BE the creative moment.

JamBase: On 9/9/2000 at Planet Salmon in Lyons, CO, you sat in with the band on a big "Nobody's Fault But Mine" jam with Jeff Austin, Pete Sears and John Bell. We are featuring this song in our live album giveaway and are wondering if you have any memories of that night, perhaps even the songs?

John Cowan: I remember it very well. The last time I ingested any psychedelic properties - that I can remember - was probably '85. I remember thinking, "A lot of people are tripping out here. That's cool!" Ha! It was the first time I met John Bell and probably the first time I met Jeff Austin. It was kind of actually like Mayor McCheese meets Dr. John (The Night Tripper) meets Kurt Vonnegut, and they go over to James Thurber's for cocktails. I've always loved this song. What's cool is everyone learns it from a different artist. I learned it from listening to Freddie King, who has always done it sort of uptempo, which is not how it is traditionally performed.

Performing with Salmon was/is always an exercise in letting my eight-year-old self hang out with my freshman-in-college self, hang out with my present-day self. It's ALWAYS nothing like you think it's going to be, but you know by their smiles that they have your back, so it's okay to surrender and just go ahead and jump off the cliff with 'em.

Pete Sears & Drew Emmitt - Leftover Salmon by Weintrob

Pete Sears: I met the guys from Leftover Salmon at a party Bill Graham was throwing at his place in Mill Valley, California. They were the entertainment that day, and their sideways, non-traditional approach to playing bluegrass made a strong impression on me. It was obvious they were all amazingly talented on their instruments and were also well versed in traditional bluegrass, but they gave it a more modern, quirky, anything goes slant, especially Vince's almost vaudevillian style as a frontman. He'd go barefooted onstage, which you don't see too often, and he's very good at connecting with an audience. He is also very good at adlibbing lyrics, if he feels so moved. I remember Drew on mandolin and Mark on banjo trading licks on the bus between shows; they were always playing and obviously lived for their music. To my knowledge, Salmon was the first band to fuse Cajun, rock, and bluegrass. It really was a new sound. I think they called it Polyethnic Cajun Slamgrass, or something like that. They helped influence a whole new crop of bands in similar styles, including The String Cheese Incident.

JamBase: In what way has Leftover Salmon influenced your own music or perhaps your life?

Pete Sear: Every band I've played with since 1964 in England has influenced me in one way or another, and Salmon is no exception. I already loved listening to traditional bluegrass, and loved Cajun and zydeco, so it was a lot of fun playing with Salmon, although often challenging. Peter Rowan and I had done a tour of Colorado as a duo, and piano had fit in with Peter's style of bluegrass very well. But playing with Salmon was sometimes a bit like falling off a boat in the open ocean and wondering if you are going to be a good enough swimmer to make it back to shore. They'd start off with a nice medium tempo blues or folk song or something then without warning launch into a manic bluegrass number in the key of B at 500 miles per hour, with everybody leaping around all over the place. I'd vamp along for half the tune on piano, not generally an instrument used in that kind of banjo bluegrass picking, knowing full well that at any minute they were all going to look at me expectantly to take a solo and wondering if my fingers were going to be fast enough to cut it. You just have to sort of say, "To hell with it," close your eyes, hunch your shoulders, and go for it. It was a lot of fun though. It seemed to work out okay most of the time...I think. I also played some accordion with them, there's a YouTube out there called "4:20 Polka" of us at Wavy's "Pignic" in Laytonville, California. Mark was still with us back then. He played some amazing banjo licks; the whole band played great that day.

JamBase: On 4/4/1997 at The Fillmore in San Francisco you sat in with Leftover Salmon on "Funky Mountain Fogdown." You also sat in with the band on a big jam of "Nobody's Fault But Mine" with John Bell, Jeff Austin and John Cowan on 9/9/2000 at Planet Salmon. We are featuring both of these songs in our live album giveaway and are wondering if you have any memories of either night, perhaps even the songs?

Sears, Emmitt, Bell, North - Leftover Salmon by Weintrob

Pete Sears: I do remember sitting in on those shows, but don't recall what we played. One show with Salmon sticks out in my mind. It was in Chicago. I played a slow blues with them and Sugar Blue sat in also, he played some amazing harp. They have a recording of it somewhere; I'd love to hear it some time. Afterwards, we all went down to the Kingston Mines and listened to R&B and blues into the early hours of the morning.

I did a few tours with the early Salmon, mostly between my gigs with Hot Tuna and Zero. They had an old yellow school bus, which had been modified with plywood. They gave me a bunk to use. It was a bit like going back to my early years touring England with my first band, The Sons of Fred, in 1964. We'd play six or seven nights a week all over the British Isles, traveling in an old, beat up van with a couple of guys lying on top of the amps in the back. We played a few TV shows and recorded at Abby Road Studios, then EMI, but most of the time we roughed it. Salmon's bus was full of music, laughs, and pot smoke. I hadn't smoked much for many years, so the secondary smoke gave me a nice mellow high. It was sort of like traveling in a big yellow joint with wheels. As well as respecting the band's musicianship, I liked them as people. The road manager, crew, everyone was into the music and played an essential part in keeping things running as smoothly as possible.

I remember one time I joined them for a few shows when they came through California. They were towing this fiberglass fish behind the bus. It was to spread word about saving our rivers from pollution. I got this crazy idea to get a friend of mine who had an old Stearman biplane to fly alongside the bus and film us as we crossed the Golden Gate Bridge. I used to fly this old plane myself; it was beautiful. He was unfortunately only able to make one pass due to restricted airspace. We did get a few seconds of shaky film though; it's hard to film out of an open cockpit. Not sure if I ever showed the band what we got on film that day. All I know is we had a lot of fun driving across the bridge looking up at the old biplane with the Pacific Ocean in the background, and parking over at the Marin Headlands. It was a beautiful sunny day; we laughed a lot.

Another incident sticks out to me. I remember being present at a band meeting in Denver when a large, well-known booking agency offered Salmon a chance to take everything up to another level. They declined out of loyalty to the guy who was already booking them. You don't come across that sort of selflessness much in this business. I was impressed. You could say by staying loyal to their booking agent they may have held themselves back from perhaps becoming a stadium band, but at the same time, that decision enriched their sense of personal integrity. I didn't play much with them after Mark died. I loved that man; he had a pure spirit. I have jammed with both Drew and Vince since the old days though. Leftover Salmon made an important mark on the music of an entire generation, and I am proud to have been a small part of it.

There has never been any lack of greatness in the career of Pearl Jam, but the band's ninth studio release, Backspacer (Universal), returns the band to No. 1 on the Billboard charts, and moreover, it provides a handful of soon-to-be classic tunes.

Every Pearl Jam album has had its place, but the previous three studio albums - Binaural (2000), Riot Ac (2002) and Pearl Jam (2006) - have all proved to be largely forgettable. Much of what defines Pearl Jam was recorded by 1998, ending with Yield. A major reason for Pearl Jam's return to such greatness on Backspacer is the work of producer Brendan O'Brien (Bruce Springsteen, AC/DC). Not coincidentally, O'Brien produced Vs. (1993), Vitalogy (1994), No Code (1996), and Yield (1998), and notably did not produce Binaural, Riot Act, or Pearl Jam.

Backspacer has all the classic Pearl Jam elements. There is plenty of intense vocal delivery from the great Eddie Vedder, beginning with the in-your-face "Gonna See My Friend," reminiscent of such past songs as "Even Flow" and "Do The Evolution." The radio hooks are there, too. "The Fixer," joining the likes of so many memorable Pearl Jam songs (beginning with "Jeremy"), is rightfully burning up radio airwaves across the country right now. And of course, the Pearl Jam versatility to harness soft tunes, without softening the band or its listeners, is apparent on "Just Breathe" and "The End."

So, don't be fooled by the not-so-classic-Pearl-Jam modern day corporate hype of the major iTunes and Target exclusive deals with Backspacer. Pearl Jam has proven it has never slowed down and will continue to impress as one of the last true remaining bad ass rock & roll giants.

Bolting at you with a cry of, "I want to fuck LeAnn Rimes," Impediments strut in like new day New York Dolls, celebrating the loss of control over spit-speckled vocals, vigorous handclaps, lusty piano rolls, caveman rhythms, and chomping guitars. Many talk of a garage aesthetic but these recent high school grads from Berkeley, CA get good 'n' greasy. These are the sounds of a "Pleasant Valley Sunday" spent on a handful of lil' white pills trying to pump Michigan rattle (MC5, Stooges, Mitch Ryder and Detroit Wheels) through a rusty punk pipeline. Recorded and engineered by Greg Ashley (Gris Gris), this is perfectly refined rawness, just enough of everything to inspire slam dancing, even if there's only your stuffed animals or unwitting neighbors to whack against. Snot-smeared and Nuggets aficionado friendly, this debut is a fucking cool loogie in the eye of rock's orderly, commercially conscious mainstream. A-freakin-men, you unruly whippersnappers!

As fans of Evan Dando's lively spins on such tunes as Suzanne Vega's "Luka", Simon and Garfunkel's "Mrs. Robinson," and "Frank Mills" from the musical Hair know, few acts from the 1990s commercial alt-rock boom could deliver a cover tune quite like The Lemonheads. And if you're the type of fan who prefers Dando karaoke to his original material, you need to check out his latest album since resurrecting The Lemonheads name, which is also his label debut for the otherwise metal-centric imprint The End Records.

Varshons is an 11 song set that finds Dando and co. delivering low-key covers of some of his favorite tracks from the deep nether regions of his album collection. For the most part, the album is centered around a pretty, alt-country haze, featuring songs tailor-made for this theme, from Gram Parsons' "I Just Can't Take It Anymore" and Townes Van Zandt's "Waiting Around To Die" to countrified renditions of songs that you never thought twang-worthy, including Wire's Pink Flag rave-up "Fragile" and an absolutely ingenious reading of GG Allin's "Laying Up With Linda" that really removes the crust from GG's tortured, controversial image to reveal the heart of a fairly great songwriter.

However, Varshons also contains some pretty neat surprises outside of the country box as well, most notably a fun run through "Dirty Robot" from Dutch electro-duo Arling and Cameron (featuring guest vocals from supermodel Kate Moss), and a scrappy, stirring reading of "Beautiful", Linda Perry's smash hit for Christina Aguilera that Dando makes entirely his own. Nothing against The Lemonheads' original stuff - I mean, "My Drug Buddy" and "Mallo Cup" are definitely Top 25 of the 1990s material - but perhaps Dando should follow the lead of his fellow Clinton-era alt-rock superhero-turned-cooler-than-cool cover act Matthew Sweet and prepare a second volume of Varshons for his follow up.

Back in 2005, Spencer Krug, arguably the hardest-working man in indie rock - he is the vocalist, pianist and guitarist of four different bands: Sunset Rubdown, Wolf Parade, Frog Eyes, and Swan Lake - gave the world a great song. It was called "I'll Believe in Anything." It first appeared on Sunset Rubdown's debut LP, Snake's Got a Leg. A few months later, it re-surfaced in a different version on Wolf Parade's first full-length album, Apologizes to the Queen Mary. The song, in a word, soared. Raw, powerful drumming backed by Krug's intense, melodic yelp yielded results that were passionate, dramatic, and touching in ways impossible for a songwriter to plan. It was the kind of song that made you either want to weep or stand up in the passenger seat of a moving car with half your body out the open sun-roof, while you closed your eyes, threw your hands to the sky, tilted your head back, and smiled because you were finally confident in your place in the world. Somehow, one line, the song's recurring lyric - "Nobody knows you and nobody gives a damn!" - encapsulated every wild emotion every teenager has ever felt - all the pain, love, confusion, remorse, regret, and hope. More than anything else, "I'll Believe in Anything" demonstrated Krug's ability to make chaos beautiful.

Unfortunately, nothing Krug has done since comes close. Anything he is involved in is doomed to be a letdown, including live shows.

All summer long, Krug and Sunset Rubdown - comprised of Camilla Wynne Ingr (back-up vocals, percussion, keys), Michael Doerksen (guitar, bass, synthesizers, drums), Jordan Robson-Cramer (drums, guitar, keys), and newest member Mark Nicol (bass, drums) - toured in support of their latest album, Dragonslayer (released June 23 on Jagjaguar), a sprawling, ambitious saga whose eight songs enjoy an average length of over five minutes. On October 27, Rubdown played their final North American date to an almost sold out club of mostly early twenty-somethings at The Troubadour, a small club in West Hollywood. Expectedly, the 75-minute set, including one encore, continued Krug's post-"I'll Believe in Anything" streak of fine but not great music. The band comfortably executed "You Go on Ahead (Trumpet Trumpet II)" and "Idiot Heart," two of the stronger songs from Dragonslayer. They unveiled a brand new song, which Krug clarified was about getting drunk and forcing your friends to take care of you (he then dedicated the song to his tour manager), and older material like "The Mending of the Gown," which was driven by the weaving together of a proggy guitar riff with Krug's brief, redundant, '80s pop piano notes, and "The Empty Threats of Little Lord," during which Krug repeatedly cried, "No, I am not that kind of whore!" These selections represented how consistently the band, throughout its half-decade career, has managed to create complex but accessible arrangements. Nothing, however, stood out. It was a show devoid of highs and even lows. The show was just fine.

Sunset Rubdown

"Idiot Heart" was perhaps the closest thing to a highlight. The song demonstrated one of the ways Sunset Rubdown is unique; they are one of the few bands that allow the lyrics to dictate the sound of the music, rather than vice versa. After Krug sang, "I was never much of a dancer, but I know enough to know you gotta move," Robson-Cramer sped up on the hi-hat, creating a synergy between lyric and music hard to find in any genre. The crowd erupted, letting loose into a semi-dance party.

"Silver Moons," also from Dragonslayer, should have been great. On record, when Krug and Ingr harmonize during the bridge, the sweet and child-like sound of Ingr's pipes gorgeously complement Krug's rough, fractured whimpers, essentially creating a third voice. Live, however, they didn't pull it off; it sounded like two people competing to be heard. Krug had a head cold, so that might have been the reason. At one point, he even apologized to the crowd that his voice sounded "fucked up." Other than that, he was his usual shy self and kept stage banter to a minimum, even ignoring the fan who kept yelling out, "It's always sunny with Sunset!"

The only surprise of the night was the opening band, Tune-Yards. Led by talented female vocalist Merrill Garbus, this three-piece, which included a touring bassist and guitarist, commanded the stage for a fast half-hour set. Garbus beat the hell out of a snare and a tom drum, strummed and fingerpicked a ukulele, scatted and yodeled, recording sounds on the spot and then looping them to create beats. She sang over these literally fresh beats as well as over funky bass lines in a vocal style that conjured influences as wide-ranging and perplexing as Aretha Franklin AND Alanis Morissette. The initial reaction of some was, "WTF?" but the music was angry, sexual, a lot of fun, and won the crowd over by the end. Sunset Rubdown should have been taking notes.

Galactic

New Orleans is a city defined by its unique and colorful history. It's for that reason that most tend to view the place as something of a musical museum while ignoring the town's vibrant and innovative new music. In New Orleans, the hip hop at the heart of today's culture emerged from an energetic, highly eroticized and occasionally gender-bending music called "bounce." And the truth is, all the town's seemingly disparate styles - jazz, brass bands and funk as well as the newer "bounce" influenced hip hop, are all intrinsically linked. There is a particular inclusiveness about the place, which connects both its people and their music. And now, for the first time ever, all these sounds have been combined on one original record. With Ya-Ka-May, long time NOLA residents, Galactic have made an album that reflects the city as they see it - blending all the town's distinctive sounds in a way no band has before.

Ya-Ka-May is set to be released Feb 9, 2010 on Anti Records. The album features established legends such as the Rebirth Brass Band, Irma Thomas, Big Chief Bo Dollis, Allen Toussaint and Walter "Wolfman" Washington with younger artists like Trombone Shorty and Corey Henry, John Boutte, Josh Cohen and Scully, and Glen David Andrews, as well as groundbreaking new "Bounce" artists like Cheeky Blakk, Big Freedia, Katey Red, and Sissy Nobby. The end result is New Orleans like it's truly meant to be heard, and pure Galactic.

Backyard Tire Fire

Backyard Tire Fire will release Good to Be on February 16, 2010 through the band's own Kelsey Street Records with distribution provided by Thirty Tigers/RED. Good to Be was produced by Los Lobos' Steve Berlin, who makes an appearance on every track on the album.

Good to Be is a culmination of guitarist/vocalist, Ed Anderson's thirteen year journey on the road of rock and roll. For the band's fifth full-length release, Backyard Tire Fire delivers an album full of workingman songs that provide an upbeat, glass half full approach to life. Drawing on inspiration from everyday events, Anderson weaves his way through the fabric of life making a patchwork of eleven songs that bear the message of empathy, humanity and hope.

Over their eight-year career as a band, Backyard Tire Fire has created a presence in the music world that is hard to ignore. The trio boasts an impressive roster of celebrity fans. Reverend Horton Heat's Jim Heath calls Backyard Tire Fire "one of the best and coolest bands out there." "My favorite band right now is Backyard Tire Fire and they sometimes remind me of early Wilco, Son Volt and Flaming Lips - they are my earworms these last few months," adds Johnny Hickman of Cracker.

The current Backyard Tire Fire lineup is Ed Anderson (guitar & vocals), Matt Anderson (bass, vocals), and Tim Kramp (drums). The band will kick off a national tour in February 2010, with dates to be announced soon.

Two preview tracks from the record have been posted to the band's MySpace page.
