Heavy Compaction will begin on the Albany Island when the dozers are able to cross the south channel which is expected to be during the week of January 2- 5, 2012. (Note that it will be at the owners discretion to mobilize their equipment across the south channel). Snow bridges have been constructed starting with one lane and are about 95 % completed. The ramp at the Albany South Channel (south side) was constructed and snow has been harvested and piled near the ramp.

Heavy compaction has begun and is about 50% competed. Dozers are continuously dragging up to Wapsikau. The dozers removed the shell ice at km 95. Flooding at the South Albany channel and the shortcut to Kashechewan continues on a daily basis. Ice measurements will be taken during the week of January 2 - 5, 2012, and Road surface preparation is expected to commence this week as well.

Our foreman, Edmond Edwards continues to monitor the progress daily and spends a great deal of time on site to ensure that our quality assurance and quality control program is carried out.

Section #3 Half Albany Island to Big Willow

Initial snow compaction was 100 % completed on December 12, 2011. Snow bridges have been constructed and are flooded when additional lifts are constructed. Snow had to be harvested to ensure that there would be adequate snow to construct the snow bridges. Heavy compaction is about 80% completed and the Dozers continue to drag on a daily basis. Road surface preparation is expected to commence during this week of January 2 – 5 2012. The North Albany continues to be flooded and it is near the target thickness of 43 inches. Ice measurements will be taken during the week of January 2 – 5, 2012.

Our foreman, Silas Reuben continues to monitor the progress daily and spends a great deal of time on site to ensure that our quality assurance and quality control program is carried out.

Section #4 Big Willow to Attawapiskat

Initial snow compaction was completed 100% on December 15, 2011. Road clearing and light compaction started on December 16, 2011 and is about 95% completed. Crews from Section # 3 constructed a one lane snow bridge at Big Willow to assist in the construction with Section #4 as they start construction later than other sections on the James Bay Winter Road. Dozers have crossed the Attawapiskat River and are working south building ramps at all major crossings. Flooders are building berms at the major crossings and flooding them. Heavy compaction will commence when all snow bridges and ramps are constructed as this section has many deep seated creeks. Road surface preparation is expected to begin during the week of January 9 – 13 2012.

Our foreman, Steve Hookimaw continues to monitor the progress daily and spends a great deal of time on site to ensure that our quality assurance and quality control program is carried out.

Conclusion

It is expected again this year that we will have partial road openings on the James Bay Winter Road, which is a direct result of the later start up of construction in Section #4 due to required flooding on the Attawapiskat River prior to deployment of heavy equipment.

The official road opening to light traffic is estimated to be in effect on or about January 13, 2012 up to Section #3 which is the turnoff to Kashechewan.

Given the type of freeze up conditions we had and the lack of precipitation, frost penetration was successful this year and we were able move faster than expected in our planned construction time frame. Minor road clearing was carried out due to the low amounts of precipitation that we had, however snow harvesting continues.

Ice measurements will be conducted during the week of January 3 – 7, 2012 by our staff and these measurements will dictate the flooding activities.

Heavy compaction is beginning or has begun and we are anticipating the start of ice capping in sections 1-3 during the week of January 9 – 13, 2012.

Wally J.
