JH: It is not the title of his talk, but Kelly's point is that Technology IS a complex life form in its own right, and he defines technology essentially as organization and information, which is the same stuff as life. As such, it has been evolving since the origin of the Universe. We did not invent technology, we are though accelerating its evolution. We are doing this by creating more options for it to evolve, effectively evolving its ways of evolving.
Treating technology as having a life of its own is a powerful vision. It does not mean that all technology is used for good, or has a positive effect on other forms of life, but like children, a technology is never intrinsically bad. While I fail to see the argument for an inescapable point of singularity (Kelly does not either by the looks of it), I do see the need to embrace technology as part of the same stuff as everything else, the same stuff as us, as the ecological complex. If we cannot reconcile the two+ systems it is not likely to be technology that loses the chance to persist.... As technology becomes more diverse and advances, it becomes more like other living systems, so perhaps we are living through an era of apparent dichotomy, when the bigger long term picture is of a single pattern.

via ted.com

JH: First post for a long time on this blog, and it is another TED talk. This lecture really captures what has become my World view on the eco debate. Let me introduce a couple of the major themes:

The first point is that it is not just about one dimension, like CO2. Atmospheric carbon is a very important metric, but it is not the only one that counts. We could reduce our emissions in ways that would not necessarily reverse our predicament. According to research presented in this lecture there are 9 dimensions that define the boundaries of our action on the planet. Modeling the Earth's environmental systems and our impact on them is a quickly developing area of science. As this talk suggests, there is the foundation of the knowledge and science to allow us to formulate a new way. It must not be rigid science, but at the same time science has to be understood and respected.

The second point is that it is a mindset change that is required. We need to think, not in terms of restricting damage within the old model. We need new ideas and approaches, to set up new systems that allow us to support 9bn people but while living within those 9 boundaries. So one side of this challenge is about creating new science, new technology and hence new systems with enough redundancy to be stable.
Although this represents a massive challenge, literally the biggest we have ever faced as a species, we can at least face up to it with a positive attitude.Yes, what a scary 40years ahead (if you watch the lecture you will see why 40yrs) but also, what an interesting time to live through and be part of.

I recall another TED video from marine biologist Jeremy Jackson, entitled "How we wrecked the ocean", who documented the terror that has been reaped on the oceans in the last 40years. Given what he had witnessed, and the trends he sees continuing, he could not help but be pessimistic. His closing comment, which I have thought about many times since, was that for him this was no longer about saving species, reducing C02 emissions etc etc. It was now much bigger than that. It is about the intellectual integrity and dignity of mankind as a species. Are we going to let this happen? Or are we going to step up to the challenge of finding a new way.

This I see as the rallying call for the other side of our challenge - the intellectual, emotional, psychological side. The right, positive, collaborative mindsets need to emerge, and like the science it cannot be too rigid or one dimensional, since systems like that are never robust. This parallel challenge, let's call is 'mindset innovation', will take just as much invention and creativity, and is every bit as necessary, since without it the new solutions will neither be found nor adopted.

I just revisited this talk after 6months or so, having first found it on Smart.fm, and I have to say it is just as brilliant the second time round.
These 19mins fundamentally shifted my attitude to educating my children, just as my wife and I have to start taking the issue pretty seriously. And it is wickedly funny too.
Sir Ken Robinson advocates a major rethink of the values that underpin education systems, and his case is urgent and compelling: "Picasso once said this: he said that all children are born artists. The problem is to remain an artist as we grow up. I believe this passionately: that we don’t grow into creativity, we grow out of it. Or rather, we get educated out if it. So why is this? " His point is not about painters, but creative thinking, and meaningful expression. Do we structure education to support the development of our children in this way? No! Robinson's assertion is this:
"Now our education system is predicated on the idea of academic ability. And there’s a reason. The whole system was invented – around the world, there were no public systems of education, really, before the 19th century. They all came into being to meet the needs of industrialism."
This system, specifically the bias placed on certain types of ability over others within that system, is not adequately serving us now, and it certainly will not in the future.
Check out the full video to see what he advocates as an alternative way of thinking.

When I was working as an advertising planner in the Ogilvy London office in my first year out of University (2002) Rory Sutherland was a resident guru, and was well ahead of the curve in terms of where digital communications were going. Now he is an Ogilvy VP, and his brilliance is recognised broadly enough to get invited to TED (http://www.ted.com/).

In my year and a bit working in the London advertising scene I met a lot of flashy ad-people, but I also was lucky enough to work with some immensely inspiring intellects and personalities, Rory being a good example. The fact that people with his blend of wit & wisdom about people and society, as well charisma can find a satisfying life as an ‘ad-man’ is one reason I am still enthused by the industry, although I have to say the British scene seems to do best at attracting brilliant eccentrics. Here is the talk:
http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/rory_sutherland_life_lessons_from_an_ad_man.html
His narrative is brilliant, and the messages true - like so many of the TED talks, 15mins of inspiration... It makes the obvious but usually forgotten point that all value is perceived value, and so just by changing people’s way of looking at something, you can greatly change the object's perceived value – and he shows some hysterical examples to prove it. The counter examples are also enlightening - how other solutions to changing perception have been attempted.

His defense of the advertising industry went as far as explaining that having a bunch of people thinking up ways to increase intangible, perceived value in the World is a beneficial thing for society, and environment, all firmly tongue in cheek of course. As an ad-guy very much at home on the social web, with a big blog and Twitter following, he makes a great role-model for contemporary 'ad-men'.

Personally I do not believe that all the value created in the advertising industry is of benefit to humanity - it depends what you are measuring the value against, right? But either way working with talented people with an interesting take on the World is going to make the experience more rewarding....

Is there anyone who inspired your career recently? Can you recommend any other TED talks we should all check out?

Alien-Eye currently boasts 5 extremely talented (+ opinionated) visual creators, spread across video, design & multi-media. Our work flows seem to provide for a healthy amount of down-time (“I am just waiting for this effect to render”, “I can’t get started until these files have copied over” etc etc) for them to exchange news and opinion, often heatedly, about the things they love most. Common topics include, in no particular order: cinema, video cameras, YouTube hits, iPhone apps, web apps, Apple / Mac releases of any kind, other creators... For an amateur like me some of this is just noise, but a lot more of it is pretty cool info that I would never get to absorb if they were not around.
One example of where I have acted on this is my camera. Stills cameras have been a recurring theme among the creative chitterers for many months now and when Franceso (multi-media, apps) brought in the catalogues for the new Canon range my ears perked up, as I had been thinking to replace my aging Pentax digital SLR.

A long time Pentax fan, I used the classic Pentax MEsuper from when I was a kid, which I will always love I think:

And when it was time to go digital I bought Pentax first digital SLR (*ist DS) – which has been a good servant, but is now super-superseded). The killer feature that had me over in our studio gleaning through Canon brochures was the incorporation of HD video into a consumer SLR camera.
I am for the most part a stills guy, but there are certain moments when one of the kids is putting on a performance or whatever it is that you really need a video. I never want to shoot reels and reels of video. Usually a minute or two at max is enough. So I do not need a specialist video camera, but I want something better than the Jpeg string that the Finepix we have kicking around the house can capture.
Currently 2 of Canon’s SLR cameras take HD video: the Kissx3 and the Kissx5. Here is the Kissx3 - which is what I went for:

The compactness and simplicity of Pentax cameras that I always loved has I think been adopted in recent years by Canon, at least in their consumer / prosumer models, I suspect in part to capture the female market in Japan. So something like the Kissx3 is compact enough to allow you to carry it around easily along with the 3 bags full of kids things that we seem to have to take everywhere these days and that I end up lugging, and have great results on the point and click settings, and yet equipped enough to be able to set up a shot just how you want it when you have the time and motivation. And on top of that the amazing HD video quality is a pure bonus. Check out this clip of Kirren and my mother-in-law’s beloved cavalier. The focus ring is less than ideal for video, but actually the resulting effect of not getting a sharp image first time I found quite endearing, almost reminiscent of old home-shot cinefilm footage:

Another recent purchase among the alien-eye creative team is the Canon Powershot G11. I think this is a really smart buy too, for lots of reasons, not least the vari-angle LCD display. If you are like Ryan (Film / video) and me, you end up shooting from an inch off the ground pointing up, or some

where else where you could never get your eyeball perpendicular to the screen, let alone against the viewfinder. Having this on a camera of this size is very cool:

I also like the look of the Panasonic’s Lumix cameras – particularly this slightly retro look, and the combination of Panasonic electronics with Leica lenses is pretty unstoppable:

Dicky (Film / video) was back from Taiwan to join this conversation, and his typically sagacious two-cents was that, above anything else the feel of a camera in your hands is the most important thing, and that is something unique to you, so going to a shop and playing around is going to help you fall in love with the camera for you, rather than looking at specs online or in a brochure. I second that.

What do you think? Is there a camera you are in love with? This alien-eye debate is very much open to all parties....

Kirren, our second lovely little horror, turned 2 recently. Those 2 years flew past. We are only just realizing we do not have any babies anymore, but 2 little boys. My wife made a cake decorated as Anpan-man, the Japanese character who Kirren is in love with at the moment. Kirren has a couple of T-shirts with anpan on the front (he is wearing one of them in the video here too).

We do not know how he has got so into him – he hardly has anything with anpan-man on it. Must be at the nursery, and the fact that anpan-man’s face is to a toddler what a jar of honey is to Winney the Poo. He gets really upset when it is time to get changed out of this T-shirt and will try to stop us from separating him and his rosy cheeked hero, so even something as simple as getting in the bath can become a frantic wrestling match. But just seeing the expression on his face in this video makes it all worthwhile!

And here is how you can become an “Overlord”. Points systems are a pretty effective way of creating stickiness for a web community or application I reckon, particularly when you can use them in interesting ways. In Ameba http://www.ameba.jp/ (Japanese version of Tumblr? Currently 5.6m users) for instance, you can use your ‘Ameba Gold’ to deck out your virtual space and buy cute clothes for your avatar – before you ask I am not hooked on that, but it seems to be working for Ameba... Don’t think Wakoopa is offering me anything other than a goofy character widget, and I don’t mind being cast as a follower type devotee anyway.... It just sits there in the background sending my usage data off to their servers, and let’s me see how much of my life I am investing behind a computer screen!

I gleaned this from Wakoopa ( http://wakoopa.com/), which I have had installed for a month or so now. It is an application that tracks what applications you are using, and shows you in pretty graphs (see below). I suspect it is biased by the fact that their data comes from their own install base, who are likely to be more heavy-user types, so biased towards Firefox, but anyway, I thought it was an interesting take on the browser wars, that is usually expressed in recorded sessions, rather than total time.
My application usage for the last week looks like this:

Office Entourage (desktop email), Safari and Google Docs are neck and neck. Alien-eye is on the Google Apps system, and I see myself doing email in the Gmail interface more and more in the future. Skype is pretty high: we do a skype chat every hour on Sunday with my parents, not least so they can interact directly with the kids (as far as Sennon and Kirren’s consciousness is concerned, Granpa and Granma are in the room, I am certain). Also tried out the new screen-sharing function in Skype this week with a friend. We were showing each other photos in Picasa using the screen sharing. Quality was not out of this world, but good enough.
Here is my usage breakdown by category:

Last Friday was a long day! I wonder what this looks like across the whole user-base? As cloud based services grow and grow I guess the office share would lose out more and more to the internet. And Wakoopa will be the go-to-guys when you want to see those trends.
Also noticed they have a points system that maps to user archetypes. I am currently a “devotee”, but there are still 3 ranks above me! Not sure I want to go any further. You can increase your points by wasting even more time on the web, also by contributing reviews for software and aps – Wakoopa is a reviewers community as well...
Let me know if you are using this, and what it is telling you. For my work I need to get around quite a lot, so I am not tied to my desk everyday, but what would this look like for people who are?

...on radiation? Perhaps... yes. Most of us will never read a book about radiation for the rest of our lives. That's why there is a very brief website summarizing the book's message and highlighting its significance (phew!) : http://www.radiationandreason.com/
But I would still highly recommend you read it. I am a physics major, so i don't count, but my Dad read it, and he thought the world should sit up and take notice. As did my Uncle. And they care about gardens and beer and happy grandchildren...
The author is Prof Wade Allison, my Physics tutor at Uni. He is an expert in nuclear physics (he is the sort that bangs sub-atomic particles together while the rest of us are playing pool down the pub). Significantly, he is also an expert in the application of radiation used in medicine; so radiography, chemotherapy, MRI scanning - all that amazing lifesaving technology. This means he is an expert in how radiation interacts with & its effects on living tissue, cells, AND the biological mechanisms that respond to a radiation dose.
I can vouch for the fact that he has no political axe to grind. He is a professional scientist, and a professional educator, and he simply wants the general public to understand the truth. And the fact is, as it stands, they do not. The word 'nuclear' has been so abused that our thinking is not based on fact or objective observation. It has been 'spun', badly, then left to fester.
The implications of the truth in this book are pretty huge. "Radiation is about a thousand times less hazardous than is suggested by current safety standards". That is enormous! Think about the thickness of reactor walls in power plants, think about the precautions taken in transporting nuclear material.... Society has got it way out of proportion.
The book is not trying to spin things in a new direction. Like I said, it is just about presenting the facts, which are compelling. But frankly I really wish someone would use this book to spin things in a new direction, because if we could get over this block about nuclear energy, as a race we could be carbon neutral pretty quickly. Isn't that worth looking into a bit deeper?
This is a controversial discussion, but we need to have it out. So please let me know if you see things differently!

Vosik, a dear friend from Uzbekistan, just pinged me asking ‘what is cream tea’. I will forgive him for not knowing about this very British tradition, best enjoyed on a sunny lawn, typically at around 4:30 in the afternoon, coincidentally exactly the same time he brought it up.
What you may not know is that the cream tea tradition originates in the West Country of the UK, specifically Devon, where my parents live, and Cornwall, where all my Dad’s family err from.
The original Devon method spreads cream on top of the scone, and dollops jam (typically strawberry) on top of that, whereas the Cornish takes their’s with the jam spread first, and the cream then dolloped on top.
In the same way that VHS conquered Betamax, the Devon method became the accepted practice, but NOT in Cornwall to this day. I have witnessed this many a time at my nan’s house over the years. Mind you, I have seen her dollop cream on a piece of toast. The cream down there is pretty special, so who can blame her. My wife by the way is a sucker for cream tea, but Devon method.
I would take either at this point – anyone know where I can get a nice cream tea in Tokyo?

Raining raining again, which makes the run to the nursery on the bikes a bit more stressful in the mornings, especially when Kirren is playing up, but in general, I don’t dislike rain. Must come from being from the Westcountry, where we get our fair share.
I watched “In the Shadow of the Moon” recently, the documentary about the Apollo missions to the moon. It blew me away. I showed bits of it to Sennon as well, and he was shouting 10..9..8.. rocket lift-offs for a week. The backdrop is obviously one of the most profound moments in human history, yet the job of getting there and back was of course a very practical one.
One of the astronauts interviewed said that ever since returning to Earth from the barren rock that is the moon, and the vast nothingness of space, he has never once complained about the weather. All those people who think we can run off into space once we have screwed up mother Earth should watch this. 'Inhospitable' does not even come close. This movie also explains why they never sent any Brits or Japanese up there – they would never be able to start a conversation again. Here is the film HP:
http://www.intheshadowofthemoon.com/
Have you seen it?
As the stack of unsorted business cards grows ever higher next to my desk, I have been wanting to find a better solution for managing contacts for myself and as a company, and in BatchBook ( http://www.batchblue.com/ ) I might have found just the thing.
Their system does all the basics nicely, plus it allows you to customize tags and what they call SuperTags to make it easier to categorize and search. What’s a “SuperTag”? Essentially they are customizable datafields. So I could for instance make a new SuperTag called clients, and within it create four separate fields: Past, Present, Potential and Runamile.
The UI does not have a Japanese option, which will make it harder for my Japanese staff to get into using it, but at least the data itself can be in Japanese. If there was only an automated meishi input plugin...!
Only on the 30-day trial at the moment, but once I get all the SuperTags going I am not going to want to give them up!! Very sticky.... Not expensive either.... Still open to suggestions though, so let me know if you have any!

had coffee yesterday with Philip Harper, our second chat . He is the only foreigner ever to be accepted into the traditional art of sake brewing. he is running a brewery down north of Osaka. We share cornish roots, and we went to the same university, albeit him a bit before me, so it is interesting to compare life paths, but have to say he has gone much deeper into traditional japanese culture than most of us ever manage, so he has an amazing story to tell. . he is a great guy and infectiously passionate about sake. i am trying to think up ways i can help him to revive this precious culture. His label is called "Tamagawa". I could start by drinking that - should not be too painful! Good sake is very easy to drink, and easy to match to food, more so than wine.
Japanese Shochu is pretty popular these days, but is anyone drinking sake?

Check his most recent book on Amazon: The Book of Sake: A Connoisseurs Guide by Philip Harper: http://amzn.com/4770029985

Second BBC post of the day - been following this in the last couple of weeks after England surprisingly won their first two games, but then got knocked out by NZ in the semis. I am not such a fan of the one-day format, but there have been some exciting games in this tournament.... never anyone to talk to about Cricket around me here in Japan - anyone else followed this?

It was the japanese Grand Prix yesterday at Suzuka. Combination of fellow brit Button trying to close out the World Title, the fact that he is really into japan (no doubt thanks to his hot Jpese girlfriend Jessica Michibata) and the fact that i was down at the Suzuka circuit last year for work so got a feel for the scale of it, all meant i was fairly into it. I ended up following it on my mobile while shopping in Shinjuku while trying to keep the boys in control!
