OVM | New Webstore

This past year was filled with surprises and important moments: working in a new warehouse studio in downtown LA, unveiling my second solo show at Martha Otero Gallery, the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, and the release of my monograph, Rebus. Unexpectedly, I also started developing a line of fine jewelry, scarves, and objects with support from my friends in Japan. I traveled to Tokyo 5 times in the past year, before and after the tsunami, to shepherd OVM into existence. As I explored this new medium, motifs in my work found new expression in precious metals and materials.

Drawing inspiration from forms in nature, OVM is a place of luminous fantasy and dark decay. Four major series of fine jewelry will be released this next year, along with textiles and design objects.

My fine art will continue to exist at www.jamesjean.com, while www.ovmlove.com will now act as my exclusive webstore, featuring my books and prints along with new offerings from OVM, which can been seen below.

Over 4 years ago, I was given a sketchbook to draw in by Dice Tsutsumi and Gerald Guerlais. The book, handbound and encased in a gorgeous wooden box, was already filled with beautiful drawings and paintings by well known illustrators and animation artists. The book would be passed from artist to artist, and, once filled, would be auctioned off and published to benefit the international literacy non-profit, Room to Read.

The drawing is loosely based on some elements from The Story of the Eye by Georges Bataille.

I will be in Brussels, Belgium to sign copies of Sketchtravel and the French edition of Rebus on October 13th and to attend the auction event on October 17th at Pierre Bergé & Associés.
Thanks to everyone who made it to the REBUS book launch event at Art Catalogues at LACMA this past Sunday. Up until September 7th, you can see the painting above along with original sketchbooks and other work, including a prototype of an iPad app that I designed. FYI, parking is free on 6th Street behind the museum, and entrance to the grounds and Art Catalogues is free as well. Art Catalogues will have the OVM Escape scarf and REBUS on view and for sale. Tim Burton is also on view, so perhaps make a day of it.
