Trippitorial: Class Warfare

When Rick Perry pulled out of the Republican race, I expected him to endorse me, but instead he endorsed a Newt. I don’t blame him though. Newt probably yelled at him, and we know how mean Newt can be. Maybe he thinks he can be Newt’s Vice President. He could be the new Dan Quayle. Nobody’s would assassinate Newt Gingrich if Rick Perry was the Vice President.

Jon Huntsman was poised to endorse me, but obviously somebody got to him and he ended up endorsing twit Romney. It’s almost like they don’t even want to acknowledge I’m in this race even though I’m not.

And then Huntsman accused ex-president Barack Obama (if I get in this race) of provoking class warfare. The only thing Jon Huntsman provoked was James Tripp, even if I’m not running.

Who is causing class warfare? The people eliminating the middle class. It’s not the people being eliminated. Shut your pie hole! It’s like Newt Gingrich blaming me for him eating too many Twinkies! Shut your pie hole, Newt and you won’t get so fat! If you’re not a poster boy for gluttony, then you’re probably a poster boy for something else that may explode at any minute from a continual internal combustion of bile.

The class who benefit by exploiting another class doesn’t want it pointed out. They’d make it illegal to discuss if they could get away with it. They’d call it sedition, or some word like that that fat people say to keep skinny people from eating the food.

But I digress, and it’s a good thing too. The upper class accuses the lower class of fomenting a class war to silence them. The rich foment a class war by hoarding all the wealth. If the poor foment anything it won’t be a war, it will be a revolution. Wars are for the rich. You need uniforms. The poor can’t afford uniforms! They’re lucky to have shoes!

So shut up about a class war, because if you want a class war, you’ll get a class war. At least that’s what Rambo said…I think.

Be careful what rhetoric you pursue, you may not like where it takes you, you silly primary Republicans! Put that in your twitter and tweet it!

From the Archives: The Fenced Letter

When I was a reporter for the Martha’s Vineyard Times during the nineteen-eighties, one of my beats was the town of Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts. A story I covered concerned a private beach club, the East Chop Beach Club, suing the town over the ownership of a bulkhead.

At the turn of the 20^th century, the body of water adjacent to the beach club was known as Squash Pond and was probably fresh water. At that time, about 300 feet of beach land was taken by eminent domain and a channel was dredged, creating a salt water harbor. In the 1930’s the town built a bulkhead. In order to do this, Oak Bluffs was granted an easement to give them access to build and maintain the bulkhead. Members of the town and residents of Oak Bluffs both shared the use of the bulkhead. In 1958, the beach club became a yacht club but kept the beach club name. The town said that they maintained the bulkhead until 1978, when the private club constructed a gate at the entrance to the bulkhead, limiting the town’s access.

The town owned two acres of beachfront adjacent to the club and you had to cross over club owned land to get to it. This easement remained unobstructed and I would often use that stretch of beach as it was close to where I lived. I would also jog through there during my morning run. One dawn I noticed that the club had started to construct a second fence. This one was on the beach separating their beach from the town beach. It was an eyesore.

By this time, I had quit the Martha’s Vineyard Times twice, which is another story. I was working at a radio station, but this didn’t seem like much of a radio story. It was more of a literary event. I decided to write a letter to the editor and in addition to my former paper, I also submitted it to the Martha's Vineyard Gazette, which was established in 1846. The Martha’s Vineyard Times was established right before I got there. That’s another story.

I remember when I hand delivered the letter to my old paper, the News Editor asked, “Is this an exclusive? Are you just giving this to us?”

And a reporter who knew me better than he did said, “No, he wants this to be read.”

She was right. I gave the letter to both papers. As a matter of fact, I gave it to the Gazette first. They had an earlier filing deadline.

So here’s the letter I wrote. There’s a lot of metaphor. You may be able to tell I had recently graduated from college with an English degree. Some people liked this letter. Some people did not. This is what it said:

August 12, 1985

To the Editor:

I was sitting on the public beach in East Chop early one morning late last week, reading a book, when Robert Frost suddenly said, “Something there is that doesn’t love a wall, that sends the frozen-ground-swell under it and spills the upper boulders in the sun, and makes gaps even two can pass abreast.” It was not an unusual thing for the poet to say. He had said it before.

I looked up from the book and noticed that someone had started to build a wooden fence to separate the town owned beach from that portion claimed by the East Chop Beach Club. Whoever the builder was must have done it during the night or on a previous day, for there was no one at the half completed structure to take responsibility for what was being done.

"The gaps I mean," Frost said, "No one has seen them made or heard them made, but at spring mending-time we find them there."

I stood up and walked over to investigate the fence builder’s handiwork. I brought the book with me.

It was shaping up to be a fine fence as fences go. The builder had gone to the trouble of pouring concrete into the sand to anchor the wooden poles. Further down the line, there were already other holes dug to pour more concrete in to anchor more poles to complete the structure.

As I said before, it was early. The beach was deserted. I looked over at the beach club building and its structure seemed to say, “Good fences make good neighbors.” I think if there had been a member there, I would have asked him to explain.

And Frost said, "We do not need the wall: He is all pine and I am apple orchard. My apple trees will never get across and eat the cones under his pines.”

Although I don’t always agree with Frost, he was right this time. But I didn’t tell him because I would never hear the end of it. I put the book down and ran into the water. There, the beach club had no authority to build a wall.

On Saturday I returned to the beach with my book and the fence was almost complete. There was someone in the employ of the beach club making a great deal of noise, banging wooden boards onto the fence. The worker then proceeded to staple signs to the board which read: "WARNING! NO TRESPASSING. THIS IS PRIVATE PROPERTY. Hunting, Fishing, Trapping or Trespassing for any purpose is Prohibited Under Penalty of the Law." It was a common sign, not made expressly for the club.

When the worker was done, so was the fence done. He returned to whatever his other duties were at the club. Perhaps he worked at the front desk making sure that everyone who passed his way was a member.

"Before 'I built a wall," Frost took up where he had left off a previous day, "I'd ask to know what I was walling in or walling out, and to whom I was like to give offense." The poet sounded angry, but the beach club did not listen.

I put the book down to go for a short swim. On my walk to the water I wondered if there would be more fences at the bulkhead if the beach club won the pending land court case.

"Something there is," Frost grumbled as I dove into the sound, "that doesn't love a wall, that wants it down.”

Oak Bluffs

The Editor of the Martha’s Vineyard Times gave the letter the headline: “Frost on Walls.” I forget what banner was used by the Martha’s Vineyard Gazette. One of my roommates, who sold ads at my paper, asked me if I really had a Robert Frost book with me. I said, “No.” That seemed to bother him. He shouldn’t have been bothered; the letter was the result of the scars of a New England liberal arts education. It was bound to come out that way. He had had a New England business school education---different perspective. It probably would have bothered him to know that I really wasn’t at the beach that first day. I was just jogging through. That’s when I got some of my best ideas. One of my other roommates was a typesetter for the Gazette. She typeset my letter. She didn’t get it either. She thought I was weird. Those two were actually having summer sex with each other---nothing serious. I’m not sure if they got each other.

It turned out I was right to put the letter in the Gazette. Someone on the Planning Commission told me his father read the letter out loud at the dinner table. The next time the Planning Commission met, they determined the fence was built without a permit and they made the East Chop Beach Club take it down.

I don’t know how the lawsuit turned out. I didn’t stay on the island much longer. I did an internet search and I couldn’t find anything about it. I don’t really care anyway. That’s not the point of the story.

I remember that every time one of the DJ’s at the radio station saw me he said, “Something there is that doesn’t love a wall, that wants it down.”

Tripptitorial: Corporations Want to Control Everything!

From this day forth, I will no longer be known as James Tripp. I will be known as James Tripp, Inc. I recently incorporated to avoid federal election spending limits and for the limited liability because I’m liable to do anything. Was’t Hamlet wronged Laertes? Never Hamlet. Twas Hamlet’s corporation.

People are not corporations. Sure, anybody can put an Inc. on their name, but a corporation is so much more than an individual. For example: an individual would not think to patent his own DNA, but a corporation would! As a matter of fact, I don’t own the licensing on several of my chromosomes, which can sometimes be a problem.

Corporations want to control everything! They want to control the internet! I’m afraid to look at porn on the internet, because they’re probably looking at me! The big media companies would like to turn the internet into something they can control, but they can’t control James Tripp!

I don’t care about the intellectual property rights of corporations; they’re rights they stole from my friends! I remember the non-union deals everyone was getting on those cable shows that ruined stand-up in the 80’s and 90’s. They were $300-$500 buyouts for unlimited rights. Now the producers of those shows are selling the performances on DVD, on Hulu, Netflix and any other means of distribution not yet created and none of my friends are getting paid anything! But Budd Friedman was able to buy a new monocle. Now he can see out of both eyes. Fie on corporations, I say! Fie!

You know what scares big media corporations? In the digital age, intellectual property originators don’t need them. We no longer need the middle man and creative corporate accountants to get paid. We just need to set up a website and reach our audience directly. That’s what scares them.

Corporate interests want to put a stop to this. They want to keep artists on the plantation. They’re trying to change the way the internet operates to make it more like radio and TV where they control the content.

They want to reshape the internet, which was created by the government with taxpayer money, so that their content and services---and those of companies that pay steep fees---will travel quickly along a “fast lane.” Everything else, like “Comedy Nation This Week” would be stuck in a “slow lane.” They want to charge different prices for different things. They also want to be able to charge website owners rates for them to be able to access their customers. They want to make money off of both sides.

SOPA and PIPA are a flanking a move in the corporate attack on net neutrality. You think traffic’s bad in LA, wait until you get in the internet slow lane. Hey, I have enough troubles already. Not only do I have road rage. I have walking rage. Now I’m gonna have internet rage.

Maybe it’s time to re-regulate the mainstream media. Regulation of vertical monopolies is not necessarily a bad thing. This is James Tripp, Inc.; I’ll be back next week with another Trippitorial, God Damnit!

Are Two Parties Enough (For a Real Democracy)?

Two political parties for one country is two too many---especially these two. Two-two parties goodbye.

The Democrat and Republican parties are different legs on the same beast and I hope they don’t lift them up.

In any modern election cycle, the same special interests finance both sides, which is waste of good money the board could be using to give themselves bigger bonuses. Why should these rich corporations have to spend twice the amount of money for the same influence they’ll be granted if either side wins? Talk about wasting resources.

It doesn’t matter whether a Republican or Democrat is in office, the same lobbyist will also be. We need two political parties like we need the hole in Mitt Romney’s head. Everyone should just follow me and the enigma is I’m not going anywhere.

We need a new American Whig party to defeat the imperial rule of the Republicrats! It’s like a fisherman once told me, “Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish, and I’m out of a job!”

I say we should bring back Thomas Jefferson’s Democratic-Republican Party. It’s about time somebody took aim against Alexander Hamilton! Phooey on those Federalists, I say! Phooey!

Myself, I’m a member of your party, because I believe in the things that you believe in: the good things, the right things, the things that make us all proud to be Americans. It is the party of a thousand points of view and I agree with every one of them.

Tripptitorial: Campaign Self-Financing

We have to change the way campaigns are financed. Too many rich people are running vanity campaigns with unlimited self-financing. Contributors want bang for their buck. When these kinds of candidates get into office they’re going to owe themselves favors, which I think is a sin in the Catholic Church.

Are these the kind of representatives we want in Washington? Are these the kinds of representatives we still want in Washington?

According to followthemoney.org, Mitt Romney contributed 65.04 % of his 2002 campaign for

Massachusetts Governor himself for a total of $6,150,570. And what did he get for his six million dollars?

The office of Governor of the state of Massachusetts. He’s no Oscar Goldman.

When he ran for Governor in a liberal state, he ran as a liberal Republican. When he decided to run for President in 2008, some of his liberal positions did not mesh with the far right Republican base he needed to win in the primaries. But he was the Six Million Dollar Man. “We can rebuild him. We can make him more conservative than he was.”

But his campaign needed more money--- more of Mitt’s money. Romney’s campaign for President raised $88.5 million in 2007, according to opensecrets.org, but $35.4 million of that was contributed by the candidate, which turned out to be a bad investment. He was no Steve Austin. Even “The Bionic Woman” ran for three years, although I didn’t really watch the remake…but what you’re listening to has digressed.

In this election cycle, Romney has his own Pac of Pacs and Super Pacs and mediocre Pacs which can contribute to his campaign. Is it fair for one man to have so many Pacs when I don’t even have one? I say, “No.” And it wouldn’t surprise me if the Mrs. had a Pac, man! What a horrible bump in a monologue that seemed to be leading somewhere.

Jon Huntsman has self-financed 50% of his campaign according to opensecrets.org, contributing $2,249,481 through September 30, 2011.

Governor Rick Perry contributed no money to his own campaign, so he’s not as dumb as he may seem.

Herman Cain contributed 13% of the total cost of his campaign through September 30, 2011 or $675,000. That’s a lot of pizza dough and an offer a lot of people refused.

Newt Gingrich so far has not contributed to his own campaign. I guess they wouldn’t let him charge it.

Fred Karger, the first openly gay man to seek the Republican nomination, confirming the fact that he’s more confused than even he realizes, contributed $300,924 to his run which represented 84% of his campaign budget through September 30.

Former Governor Buddy Roemer, the only Presidential candidate talking about campaign finance reform spent $45,100 of his own money just to be excluded from the debates for not having enough money. Roemer made a pledge not to accept any Pac money or pledges greater than $100, so we won’t be hearing any more about him.

If I run for president, I pledge not to accept any campaign contributions, especially from myself.

It’s one thing to throw my vote away, but my money? Maybe my campaign can get a bailout from the government. It really doesn’t matter which one.

I’m a little concerned that only 1% of the 99% are representing 100% of the 99% and I think it’s time somebody started protesting about this, but not me. I’m not a trouble maker. It’s just that the people in the Occupy movement aren’t 99% of the people. They’re probably not even 1% of the 99% of the people they say they represent. They’re not the only ones getting the business from business. They’re just the ones with sleeping bags and no toilets, but that’s no reason to listen to them. I have things say too. Listen to me. I am a spokesman for the 98% of the 99%.

The only trouble is, I have nothing to say, but that’s no reason not to say anything. Long live the ninety-eight!

First of all, my landlord’s an asshole. I want to state that right off. I have rent control, so the landlord doesn’t want to fix anything. The landlord wants me to move out so he can raise the rent. “Fuck-you, landlord. I’m not moving out. Fix the sink!” The only way I get repairs done is if I call the building inspector, which I have to do every six months. I’m on a first name basis with Building Inspector Yen, but that’s no reason to use his first name.

Secondly, how come I never got on “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson?” What, did he think he was some kind of a big shot? Is it because I didn’t have tits and didn’t blow Jim McCawley?

The 98% of the 99% have a lot more to say than the 1% of the 99%. I think I’m proving that. I don’t think the 99% are saying anything, which makes me think we’re a lot alike, but that’s not important. What is important is that we’re different.

Here’s something that bugs me---people who make lists of things that bug them. I got things that bug me too! Who needs to listen to your list? Stupid 1% of 99%.

Too big to jail banks are a big problem. I get it, 1% of the 99%. Maybe you’re right about that. The banks are bigger now than they were before the crash. That’s bad. I get it. I saw “The Merchant of Venice,” the one with Al Pacino, and I could be wrong, but he doesn’t look Jewish---maybe a Northern Italian Jew (Are there any?), but I digress, and it’s not worth protesting, and who knows, maybe this digression is more interesting than the body of words that surround it and maybe I should digress more often, but that’s a digression, also not worth protesting. There are at least 1% out of 99% of you who are not amused by this, maybe more.

My bank has all kinds of new regulations, and somebody ought to complain about that, but not me. I got a letter the other day saying I have to have money to keep an account. Stupid bank. They’re gonna lose a perfectly good customer!

Bank of America and Citibank wanted to start charging a $5 monthly debit card fee but people wouldn’t pay so they backed off. Fuck you, Bank of America and Citigroup, although in the interest of full disclosure, I do own stock in Citigroup. Fuck me.

Unemployment’s a problem. I get it, one per centers of ninety-niners. You don’t have a job. I don’t have a job either. You don’t hear me complaining. Do you think people pay me for this? They don’t. I’ve been unemployed for so long now that I had to put it on my résumé. But just because I’m unemployed, that’s no reason to get a job. Why should I go to work for a corporation like some serf when I could be surfing if I surfed? So I can buy a big new plasma TV and fancy new car and food?

Here’s another thing to complain about---but not me. I won’t be complaining. There are too many media companies. I don’t have that kind of time. With 5 different corporations controlling the flow of mass communication in this country, it just gets confusing. We need more media consolidation. News Corporation should buy everything, including lobbyists, so we can get one consistent message. I don’t know what that message should be yet, but it will be for immediate release…Maybe, “Sale Thursday!”

If News Corporation owned everything, we wouldn’t have to pay politicians so much to run for office. Who needs campaign finance reform when News Corporation can tell you who to vote for? Why make politicians collect a bunch of little checks when it’s so much easier to just collect one big one?

The Supreme Court said that corporations are people, but I still won’t visit them on holidays. If corporations are people, how do they fuck? I know how they fuck me. I don’t even have the rights to the patent on my own DNA, which can sometimes be a problem.

There are already seven billion other people in the world and only 106 of them are following me on Twitter. Maybe corporations should count as people. Then they could follow me.

Corporations are not people. They have more rights than people. My friend, Ernie, went public and he got arrested. Corporations should not have unlimited free speech rights. Just ask the Marlboro Man. You can’t. He died of cancer. Corporations shouldn’t have the same rights to free speech as people and I’m not so sure we should give it to the Supreme Court. Maybe they ought to shut up. That’d set a new precedent. I have contempt for this Supreme Court. It was a five to four decision. With a Supreme Court like this, who needs elections?

Don’t get me wrong. I love corporations. Why, some of my best friends are incorporated! I wouldn’t want one to marry my sister. I’m thinking of incorporating myself to avoid federal election spending limits and for the limited liability because I’m liable to do anything. “Was’t Hamlet wronged Laertes? Never Hamlet. Twas Hamlet’s corporation.”

At this point, I should probably point out that I forget the point, but that’s not important to the point I’m trying to make. My fellow ninety-eight per-centers, this country isn’t a Republic, it’s a privately held corporation, founded in Philadelphia, more recently a Delaware corporation, soon to be relocating to Switzerland, but that’s no reason to occupy it.
