Long before Do Spiders Leave Footprints? and my more recent writing, I published a collection of blogs about London: nightlife, hotels, theatre, travel and all sorts of other subjects.

Some of them date back to 2008 and 2009. Several grew into substantial archives with contributions from professional writers; others remained small experiments. Revisiting them means being honest about both.

Then life happened. I spent time in Budapest, Covid disrupted nearly everything, and there were other unexpected chapters along the way.

Now I'm back in London and bringing the useful parts of that portfolio back into view. The plan is to preserve dated material and credits, check what still works and add new coverage where there is something worth saying.

It feels rather good to return to something that predates so much of what I'm doing today.

I'll share some of the more interesting discoveries here as the blogs come back to life.

The New Dystopia: When Nobody Is Actually in Control

Dystopian fiction does not need a single villain pulling the strings. Sometimes the uncomfortable story is about competent people, legitimate safeguards and systems whose responsibilities overlap without anyone possessing a complete view.

Readers interested in institutional and technological power in Dave Eggers’s The Every, Don DeLillo’s White Noise or William Gibson’s Pattern Recognition may find a related question here: what happens when a system knows enough to warn us, but knowing is not the same as having permission to act?

From the novel — Chapter 25 — PERMISSION

The rain began on a Sunday and became a problem on Tuesday.

By Wednesday roads were closing, trains were slowing and one hospital had moved patients from a ground-floor ward.

At 02:17 Compass predicted that the B147 would become impassable within two hours.

Confidence: 0.86.

It recommended closing the road.

The county control room was staffed overnight, but closures above a defined threshold required a duty manager.

The duty manager was asleep.

The alert woke him at 02:23. He opened it at 02:31, checked the river gauge, saw that it remained below the physical closure threshold and called the highways supervisor.

No answer.

At 02:48 Compass updated the prediction.

EXPECTED IMPASSABILITY: 03:51. CONFIDENCE: 0.91.

The supervisor answered at 03:04.

At 03:10 Compass recommended immediate closure.

At 03:18 a crew was dispatched.

At 03:37 the first car entered standing water.

It stopped.

A second stopped behind it. Another approached from the opposite direction.

Fire crews removed four people. Nobody died. A firefighter carrying a dog through waist-high water was on the front page by breakfast.

The road was formally closed at 03:52.

Mr Vale read the timeline at 08:11.

Sanjay was already in his office.

“The system was right.”

“Earlier,” Sanjay said.

By Thursday the timestamps were on television.

“If the system knew,” a presenter asked a minister, “why didn’t anyone act?”

“Because knowing is not authority,” Sanjay said to the screen.

The emergency review began the following week.

A county representative warned that closing every road predicted to flood would close some roads that stayed dry.

Historical false-positive rate for comparable predictions: 7.4 percent.

A fire officer looked at the figure.

“Seven percent is not nothing.”

“No,” Mr Vale said.

They moved to reversibility.

A road closure could be reversed. A generator could be moved again. A warning could be corrected.

Medical treatment was different.

Arrest was different.

Compulsory evacuation was harder to undo than changing a traffic signal.

By the end of the day the whiteboard had three columns.

REVERSIBLE.

REVERSIBLE WITH COST.

NOT PRACTICALLY REVERSIBLE.

The question behind the scene

This fictional incident appears in Do Spiders Leave Footprints?, my near-future London novel about useful technology, human judgement and the limits of institutional control. Compass does not need to be an evil machine for the situation to become difficult.

The safeguards have reasons to exist. So does the urgency. The scene asks what responsibility looks like when accurate predictions, legal authority and human action operate on different clocks.

Memory, Evidence and Unreliable Certainty in Literary Fiction

Books about memory and identity sometimes involve amnesia, altered records or elaborate deception. Ordinary family recollections can be just as unsettling. Two people remember the same event differently; a photograph settles one detail while leaving the experience itself unresolved.

I’m interested in the space between evidence and certainty. Readers of Kazuo Ishiguro’s The Buried Giant or the layered experience of time in Emily St. John Mandel’s Sea of Tranquility may recognise the question, even though the setting here is a family kitchen.

From the novel — BEFORE — opening section

Adrian explained that he was writing down the earliest things he remembered before checking photographs, records or other people’s accounts.

“Before you ask us?” his father said.

“Yes.”

His mother looked up from the vegetables.

“Bit late.”

Adrian ignored her.

His father asked about the other memories and listened properly to the answers. His mother corrected one date. His father disagreed with her correction. They argued about it briefly while passing the potatoes, then moved on without settling it.

Adrian looked from one to the other.

Neither appeared troubled.

After dinner his mother began stacking the plates.

“What happened afterwards?” Adrian asked.

“With dinner?”

“The bite.”

“We took you to the doctor.”

“I mean after that. With spiders.”

She stopped with two plates in her hands.

The amusement left her face, though not completely.

“You stopped picking them up.”

“Immediately?”

His mother looked at him for a moment.

“I think so.”

Then she carried the plates into the kitchen.

Adrian had no memory of deciding not to.

His sister Julia, asked separately, remembered everybody searching beneath the cupboards with a torch. His father thought there might have been one. His mother did not remember it at all. Adrian had remembered the torch before asking any of them and distrusted the memory afterwards.

The medical note survived.

SMALL PUNCTURE WOUNDS / LOCAL SWELLING.

POSSIBLE INSECT OR SPIDER BITE.

No species.

No certainty.

His mother also said the kitchen had been blue.

Adrian said no.

Yellow chair. White cupboards. Brown floor.

She found a photograph.

The cupboards were pale blue.

The chair was red.

Adrian looked at it for a long time.

“That isn’t the chair.”

“It is.”

“No.”

“You can see it.”

“That isn’t the chair I remember.”

His mother laughed.

“You were four.”

The photograph showed a chair.

His memory contained another.

He still remembered yellow.

He still remembered the spider.

What he did not remember was the child his mother described before it: fearless enough to be useful.

The question behind the scene

This passage opens the wider inquiry in Do Spiders Leave Footprints?, a literary speculative mystery set in near-future London. Its people use records, memories and technology to make sense of their lives, but a more accurate detail does not automatically make an explanation complete.

The excerpt is intentionally offered without resolving the disagreement. The novel is about what evidence permits us to conclude, not simply finding a hidden liar.

From the novel — Chapter 21 — BETTER

The trains got better before anyone agreed what better meant.

They were more punctual. Buses arrived more evenly. Ambulances crossed junctions faster. Roadworks collided with one another less often.

Nobody had invented a single machine that did this. The systems already existed. What changed was that more of them were allowed to listen to one another.

The transport authority called the programme OneFlow.

Mara first noticed it on a Thursday evening because her train changed platform before anybody became angry.

She was standing beneath the departure board at 17:42 with perhaps two hundred other people.

PLATFORM 4.

Then:

PLATFORM 6.

Her phone vibrated half a second later.

MOVE TO PLATFORM 6. WALK VIA EAST STAIRS. LESS CROWDED.

People around her received different instructions. Some were sent west. Some were told to wait.

A man beside Mara looked at his screen. His told him to stay where he was.

“Useful,” he said.

“I’ll let you know.”

Mara took the east stairs. By the time she reached platform six, the train was arriving.

There were seats.

Her phone displayed:

ARRIVAL 18:16. 4 MINUTES EARLIER THAN ORIGINAL ROUTE.

“Nice,” Mara said.

YOU’RE WELCOME.

She smiled despite herself.

At home Tom was cooking. He had chopped everything before she arrived, which was still unusual enough for Mara to notice and common enough that she did not mention it.

He knew about OneFlow because everybody in logistics did and claimed it was stealing their best ideas.

Mara reminded him that his best idea had been delaying parcels.

“Visionary,” Tom said.

Ellie looked up from the table. “Can systems steal?”

Tom tried to refer the question to Mara because she had opinions about terms and conditions. Mara rejected the promotion.

Ellie tried again. “If it uses your idea and makes it better, is it still yours?”

Tom opened his mouth, then closed it.

Mara laughed. “Good question.”

“That means you don’t know.”

“Yes.”

Ferraris capable of speeding at 195mph are rarely pulled over for driving too slowly but a dimwit cop did just this because he needed to fabricate a reason to harass a middle aged man on a drive with a friend.

The policeman actually thinks this was a good idea because the Ferrari could have been stolen. If every policeman followed the same school of thought as this bright spark owning a Ferrari would be a miserable experience in the UK. Is this police harassment or a duty of care where the force should consider that anyone owning anything expensive is a criminal? Stephen Fry is Camp / MP Expenses

The MPs expenses scandal, AKA 'expensesgate' to journalists with too many coffee breaks, has been the hot topic of conversation this week dividing the country between those stealing from the country and those being stolen from, oh and Stephen Fry's camp (those clever enough to realise they're too stupid to have their own opinion and so agree with whatever Stephen Fry says; that was not just an opportunity to remind you Stephen Fry is camp).

The nicest thing about the scandal is the opportunity to see so many MPs in the news, who would normally be invisible to the public eye (they could be busy supervising moat tending, taking a dip in a luxury swimming pool or romping with a horse in fresh tax-payers manure), taking the lime light to speak passionately about the reasons they saught office - expense claims.

We have established the majority of MPs are as dishonest / more dishonest than Stephen Fry and that Gordon Brown wears make-up - is that expensed? - but my biggest concerns are over Michael 'The Speaker' Martin. HE needs a good probing (are you up to it Sir Fry?) as there must be a reason for his comparitively greater concern over the missing documents than the fraudulent expenses claims. Was he expecting his name to appear?

Update: Apparently an MP has filed an expenses claim for a callout to fix the expenses leak.

Pharmaceutical Company Increases AIDS to Africa

I, James, am not a big fan of pharmaceutical companies which is predictable as they seem to s*xually molest and abuse the government at every opportunity.

The pharmaceutical companies fopr example were largely responsible for the worldwide policy to introduce smoking bans supported by Nicotine Replacement Therapy.

They also have control of all the life saving drugs we need - and will need more when the planet is so polluted that cancer becomes a right of passage for everyone, smoker or non-smoker - yet they make billions of pounds per year from limiting the supply of them or overcharging for them.

Bayer Group - the World's 3rd biggest pharmaceutical company - has been caught out with some typicaly evil behaviour - this is the company that invented Heroin and Mustard Gas so they do have previous. Yes the lovely chaps at Bayer, in cahoots with the FDA, knowingly sent HIV contaminated vaccinations overseas as it was more profitable than destroying them.

I am all for AID to Africa but AIDS to Africa?

The government loves to get others to do their dirty work and there is a prime example of that tactic in practice today with the government's decision to employ Boots and other Pharmacies in helping roll out their ill fated ID Card Scheme.

As part of a plan - ever helpful in distracting people from the $1T theft that has occurred as part of the credit crunch and/or the resulting sh*tty state of the UK (economy) - the government intends to blow some of the money they've been busy printing, and a £60 IDiot tax for all those signing up for cards, by offering up to 62 million customers and the best part of £4B in revenue to the chemists.

Unsurprisingly the National Pharmacy Association and some twat from Boots think it's a good idea.

Boots have benefited substantially from the Smoking Ban and government commitment to Nicotine Replacement Therapy (patches) as the preferred method for giving up smoking. They have also been instrumental in reframing the issue. This begs the question WHO in the decision making tree of the government has an interest in Boots or is Home Secretary - Gordon Brown thought he was appointing his typist - Jacqui Smith just hoping 'to get the Boots points' to spend on hair removal cream out of the deal?

Frustrating isn't it. You're trying to do your job protecting a thin blue line around the biggest plutocratic organisation the world has ever seen, the G20. All of a sudden without warning a bunch of c*nts (pardon my French but that is a police term I'd imagine) arrive, start objecting to their enslavement and the destruction of the world at the hands of said Plutocrats. They start singing, even SHOUTING, and generally getting on your tits.

But that's not all. To cap it off some 'protesters' aren't even protesting. They're just average citizens going about their daily business.

"Didn't we scare those numpties enough to make them stay home", you think.

I am sure you will agree it's certainly enough to make even the most experienced brown shirt, I mean bobby, see red.

So... faced with this terrible frustration what do you do?

Well of course we all know the answer, just ask your sergeant if you've forgotten. Whip out your baton - try and not think about the lovely long hard smooth shaft until you're back in your panda car - and start twatting people.
