nigeria v Algeria : Super Eagles gives update on injuries

2019-07-13T09:25:00.000+01:00

The Super Eagles trio of Ahmed Musa, Odion Ighalo and Chidozie Awaziem have been cleared for their Africa Cup of Nations semi-final clash against Algeria on Sunday.

There were fears that the players may not be fit for the match after they picked up knocks in the 2-1 quarter-final win over South Africa on Wednesday.

But the team’s Media Officer, Toyin Ibitoye, has offered positive updates.

“Everyone is fit for the game against Algeria.

“We pray not to have any issues during our last training ahead of Sunday’s match,” Ibitoye told reporters.

Transfer: Neymar gets five year deal at a Spanish team

2019-06-25T11:40:00.001+01:00

Paris Saint-Germain superstar, Neymar has finally agreed on a five-year contract with Barcelona.

According to Spanish newspaper, Sport, the 27-year-old has verbally accepted Barcelona’s offer ‘without hesitation’ as he is aware of the high transfer fee that the La Liga champions will need to spend in order to re-sign him from PSG.

This is coming after the forward, over the weekend, accepted to fulfil all three conditions from Barcelona in order to force a move back to Ernesto Valverde’s side.

Neymar has been consistently linked with a return to Barcelona since joining PSG in 2017 for a world-record deal of £222 million.

The Brazilian international earlier this week revealed his intention to leave PSG for Barcelona in this summer’s transfer window.

“I do not want to play anymore in PSG. I want to go back to my house, where I should never have left,” Neymar told Mundo Deportivo.

He was left out of Brazil’s 2019 Copa Americasquad after rupturing ankle ligaments in a friendly match against Qatar few months ago

Transfer: Real Madrid speak on signing lionel Messi

2019-06-24T09:49:00.000+01:00

Real Madrid director, Jeronimo Farre, has disclosed that the club is yet to sign Barcelona captain, Lionel Messi, because the Argentine international has not been feasible or affordable.

He also stated that Messi is yet to play for the Los Blancos because Zinedine Zidane’s side has not been able to make it happen.

Messi has been at Barcelona since his days as a teenager, with the 32-year-old developing into one of the best players of all time in the world.

“If Messi hasn’t played in Madrid it’s because we’ve not been able to make it happen,” Farre told El Mundo.

“Because he hasn’t been feasible or affordable.

“The other mega star was Cristiano Ronaldo and Madrid enjoyed his talent for nine seasons.”

Farre added, “Real Madrid are the most successful team on the continent.

“We had our lean times, but we had Alfredo Di Stefano’s cycle with great players who gave us the first five European Cups.

“Under Florentino [Perez]’s presidency we’ve had another brilliant time with Raul [Gonzalez], [Luis] Figo, [Zinedine] Zidane, Ronaldo Nazario, [Gareth] Bale and, above all, Cristiano Ronaldo. Their contributions have been crucial.”

Paul Pogba publicly admits he is leaving Manchester United this summer

2019-06-16T11:29:00.000+01:00

The Frenchman has confirmed he is ready for a new challenge amid rumours over his future.

Paul Pogba has publicly admitted for the first time he wants to leave Manchester United this summer.

Speaking to reporters in Tokyo, the Red Devils midfielder said it 'could be a good time to have a new challenge'.

Pogba continues to be linked with an exit from Old Trafford after a tumultuous campaign for the Frenchman last term.

He fell out with boss Jose Mourinho before the Portuguese was axed in December, before a turnaround in form following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's return to the club.

But his performances dropped off again towards the end of the season, with Real Madrid keen to take him to the Bernabeu.

Juventus have also been linked with signing Pogba for a second time, but Real boss Zinedine Zidane is desperate to seal the deal.

“Like you said, there is a lot of talking and a lot of thinking as well,” Pogba, 26, said.

“For me I have been for three years in Manchester and have been doing great; some good moments and some bad moments, like everybody. Like everywhere else.

“After this season and everything that happened this season, with my season being my best season as well... I think for me it could be a good time to have a new challenge somewhere else.

"I am thinking of this: to have a new challenge somewhere else.”

Pogba joined United for a second time in an £89.3million deal in August 2016.

He has scored 24 times in 92 appearances for the club and was the only player outside of Manchester City and Liverpool to be named in the PFA Premier League team of the year in 2018-19

LOOM users storm headquarters to demand for their money

2019-06-16T10:22:00.000+01:00

A new report confirms that some Nigerians stormed the headquarters of Loom in Lagos, yesterday to demand for their money after rumours of the Ponzi scheme crashing

Loom, is a Ponzi Scheme which involved a Peer to Peer Method without any visible investment.

When some of its investors stormed their office in Lagos yesterday 15th June 2018, no staff was on ground to attend to them.

Recall in May, the Securities and Exchange Commission issued a warning to Nigerians investing their in the scheme not to.

Mary Uduk, Acting Director-General of the commission said;

“We are aware of the activities of an online investment scheme tagged ‘Loom Money Nigeria’.

“The platform has embarked on an aggressive online media campaign on Facebook and WhatsApp.

“They lure the investing public to participate by joining various Loom WhatsApp groups to invest as low as N1,000 and N13,000 and get as much as eight times the value of the investment in 48 hours.

“Unlike MMM that had a website and the promoter known, the people promoting Loom are not yet known and this pyramid scheme operates through closed groups mainly on Facebook and WhatsApp.

Sanwo-Olu increases LASTMA allowance by 100 percent, cautions the officers against corruption

2019-06-14T16:49:00.001+01:00

Lagos State governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu Friday announced a 100 percent increase in the allowance for the staff of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

“Today, I visited the LASTMA office to interact with the officers on how to improve travel time within Lagos,” Sanwo-Olu said on Twitter on Friday.

“I also announced a 100% increase in their allowance effective from July,” he added

The allowance increase is one of the governor’s bid to demonstrate his determination to eliminate traffic gridlocks in Lagos State.

Sanwo-Olu during his campaign had promised to ensure eradication of gridlocks on roads if elected governor in the 2019 elections.

“I have come up with five levels of plans called the five pillars. The first one is traffic management and transportation, we are going to be heavy on that, “Sanwo-Olu said during an interview on Channels Television breakfast programme, Sunrise Daily in December 2018.

“I have done a study in the last six weeks, people have complained a lot about traffic management,” he added.

Traffic gridlock has remained a huge challenge in Lagos State, especially during the rainy season and the festive period. Often times armed robbers usually take advantage of the gridlock to rob motorists and commuters.

Besides, the security challenges it poses, the gridlocks also have a major economic impact. According to reports, $10 billion is lost annually due to the notorious gridlock around the Apapa axis of the state.

The governor had also in May signed an Executive Order titled: Enforcement of Law and Order in Respect of Traffic and Sanitation Matters.

He said his government would have zero tolerance for environmental abuse, including, disregard for traffic rules, illegal and indiscriminate dumping of refuse, construction on drainage points and obstructions.

However, the governor said he would not condone corruption or bribe-taking by any official, charging them to be respectful when arresting any offender. “Lagosians expect a corrupt-free LASTMA that will not be collecting bribes; therefore, you should be respectful and courteous even when you are going to arrest an offender.

Not again! Gorrila swallows N6.8 million in Kano Zoo

2019-06-14T16:19:00.000+01:00

A finance officer at Kano Zoological Gardens has claimed that a gorilla swallowed N6.8 million that went missing under their watch.

The finance officer, according to radio station in the state, Freedom Radio, said the gorilla “sneaked into their office” and carted away the money before swallowing it.

The money was generated from tourists who visited the zoo during the Eid celebrations.

The managing director of the zoo, Umar Kobo, confirmed that the money is missing and that the issue is being investigated.

“The issue is under investigations for now and I don’t want to say anything on the matter, many journalists have come to meet me but I don’t want to talk anything. What I can confirm is that money is missing,” he told the BBC Pidgin.

BBC reported that 10 persons, including those on duty when the money went missing, have been arrested.

“Yes, it is true that money from five days of Sallah festivities is missing from the Kano zoo,” Abdullahi Haruna, police spokesman in Kano told BBC pidgin adding: “As at now, we have arrested 10 members of staff of the zoo including the security man and those working in the finance unit.

In February 2018, Philomina Chieshe, a sales clerk in the office of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in Benue state, alleged that a snake swallowed N36 million, being proceeds from sale of scratch cards.

Eden Hazard during his Real Madrid unveiling 2 Eden Hazard during his Real Madrid unveilingCredit: AFP or licensors Hazard, 28, joined Los Blancos for a fee of £150million as Real’s spending spree continued.

The Belgian playmaker gave a speech during his presentation in which he predominantly spoke French and attempted to address the crowd in Spanish. After going on to the pitch, he kissed the badge and did some kick ups to please the supporters. But it is clear that Real fans still want another marquee signing to be made by Florentino Perez.. as they chanted

“We want Mbappe, we want Mbappe!”. Mbappe – who scored his 100th career goal in France’s 4-0 Euro 2020 qualifier win over Andorra on Tuesday – is on Real’s wishlist.

In the meantime, the Spanish giants have Hazard and he is delighted to be there. At his unveiling, he said: “When you play for a team like Real Madrid there is not one single star, the team is the star. "I have been at Chelsea for seven years, but now I am the new guy in the team and I try to contribute as much as possible.

Watch the presentation video below “I believe everyone knows that Zidane was my idol since I was a kid. “That he is now Real Madrid coach was an important factor, but not just that. I already wanted to play here. “The position is not a question for me, the coach will decide. But I always like to play on the left, or as a No 10. But if I have to play another position I will do it for sure.” Watch the video below :

Premier League 2019-20 fixtures revealed, Chelsea to face Manchester United in opening weekend

2019-06-13T10:31:00.000+01:00

Manchester United and Chelsea will meet in a mammoth clash on the opening weekend of the 2019-20 Premier League season after the fixtures for the new campaign were revealed on Thursday.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first full season in charge of the Red Devils begins with a tough game at Old Trafford on August 11 against a Chelsea team without Eden Hazard.

Tottenham also face a difficult start to the new season with the Champions League runners-up to play Manchester City and Arsenal away from home in their first four games.

Manchester City are looking to win a third consecutive Premier League title - having clinched the trophy on the final day of last season.

Pep Guardiola's side won the league by one point ahead of Liverpool following their 4-1 win at Brighton and they will be confident of getting off to a flying start this time around.

City have been given a relatively comfortable opening few games against West Ham, Spurs, Bournemouth, Brighton, Norwich and Watford.

Things get an awful lot trickier in November though. Liverpool, who pushed City so close last season, welcome their title rivals to Anfield on the weekend of November 9.

City then host Chelsea two weeks later before rounding off the month with a trip to Newcastle. The first Manchester derby of the season takes place in December before City and United meet again in March.

Liverpool will play the first match of the new campaign when they start with the first Friday-night match against newly-promoted Norwich at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp's side will be hoping to maintain momentum after their Champions League final win over Spurs and then play at Southampton and at home to Arsenal in their first three fixtures.

Liverpool and Manchester City then meet in the reverse on April 4, which could have major implications for next season's title race.

The Reds and their Merseyside rivals Everton meet for the first time in December at Anfield before renewing their rivalry at Goodison Park in March.

For the first time in eight seasons there will be no Hazard gracing the Premier League following his £150m switch from Chelsea to Real Madrid.

The Blues, who finished third last season, will be weakened by his departure as they fight an impending transfer ban this summer too.

Maurizio Sarri is unlikely to be in the Chelsea dugout next season but after heading to Old Trafford in week one, things open up nicely for the Blues.

They host Leicester and then face a pair of promoted teams in Norwich and Sheffield United.

Champions League runners-up Tottenham claimed fourth last year and Mauricio Pochettino's side host Aston Villa in their lavish new stadium to kick off the season before a tough run of games sees them play away at City and Arsenal either side of hosting Newcastle.

Arsenal will be hoping to usurp their fiercest rivals after finishing fifth last season and their second meeting of the season against Spurs takes place in April.

The Gunners, meanwhile, head to Newcastle on the opening weekend, then host Burnley before travelling to Anfield and welcoming Spurs to the Emirates on week four.

Unai Emery will not be looking forward to Christmas this year though as his side play at home to both Chelsea and United on December 28 and January 1 respectively.

While those aforementioned six clubs will be fighting for the title, Norwich, Sheffield United and Aston Villa's aims will be to emulate Wolves in staying up.

All three teams have sampled Premier League football before and will hope their current time in the top flight extends beyond the 2019-20 campaign.

Norwich, the Championship winners, face a difficult start to life back in the big time when they travel to Anfield.

There is definitely a chance to pick up some early points for Daniel Farke though as his side then have two home games against Newcastle and Chelsea before heading to West Ham.

Sheffield United will also fancy themselves to get some points on the board in the early stages of the season. Their first game in the Premier League for 12 years will be a trip to the south coast to take on Bournemouth before they have two home matches against Crystal Palace and Leicester.

Manchester United have officially announced their first signing of the summer

It had previously been reported by the club’s official sitethat a deal had been agreed in principle, but United have now gone a step further and unveiled him as their player with pictures and video.

Buhari records victory at election Tribunal

2019-06-12T15:53:00.000+01:00

The Coalition 4 Change (C4C) and its Presidential Candidate in the February 23 presidential election on Monday withdrew their joint petition filed against the re-election of Muhammadu Buhari as president at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal.

Buhari

The dismissal was sequel to an application for withdrawal of the petition filed by the party (C4C) and its presidential candidate, Geff Ojinika.

In their petition, marked CA/PEPC/003/2019, they prayed for the cancellation of the election that produced Buhari as the winner on grounds of gross irregularities and violation of Electoral Act 2010, as amended.

Justice Mohammed Garba granted the oral application filed by Mr Obed Agu, Counsel for the petitioners that transmitted the intention of his clients.

Garba, who replaced the former Presiding Justice of the tribunal, Zainab Bulkachuwa held that the petition remained withdrawn in the absence of any objections.

Speaking to newsmen after the session, Agu said the remote reason for his clients’ withdrawal was not unconnected with the new position of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party to contribute positively to the growth of Democracy.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the tribunal held another round of pre-hearing session where parties cross checked their processes preparatory to full commencement of proceedings.

Garba, who was drafted from the Court of Appeal, Lagos Division insisted that the tribunal’s practice direction would be strictly followed.

The judge, therefore, adjourned proceedings until June 11 for the hearing of some interlocutory motions.

NAN reports that three petitions against the re-election of Buhari are now before the panel of the Presidential Election and Petition Tribunal.

They include the one filed by the People Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential Candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar marked CA/PEPC/002/2019.

Another of the pending petition is the one filed by Hope Democratic Party (HDP) and its National Chairman and presidential candidate, Chief Ambrose ‎Owuru.

The other surviving petition is the one instituted by the Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM) and its presidential candidate, Pastor Aminchi Habu, marked CA/PEPC/004/2019.

The petitioners had claimed the presidential election was marred by widespread malpractices, thereby failing to comply with statutory provisions of the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act.

The petitioners have all also joined the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, and the APC as respondents.

Meanwhile, Buhari and his party, are urging the tribunal to strike out all the petitions for being incompetent, malicious and without substance.

DEMOCRACY DAY: Obasanjo, Jonathan absent as Buhari names Abuja National Stadium after MKO Abiola

2019-06-12T15:37:00.000+01:00

From left: Jonathan, Obasanjo and Buhari

Despite President Muhammadu Buhari’s arrival and the commencement of the event, former presidents and head of state, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan and Yakubu Gowon, respectively, were still absent at the Eagles Square venue of the 2019 Democracy Day celebration to mark 20 years of uninterrupted return to civil rule.

According to the schedule of the event, former presidents and Heads of state were supposed to arrive the venue by 9.35am.

But, as at 10:04 am when President Buhari arrived the venue, the former Nigerian leaders had still not arrived the venue, The Nation’s report claimed.

President Muhammadu Buhari has, on Wednesday, arrived the Eagles Square venue of the Democracy Day celebration at exactly 10:04 a.m.

His arrival ensured the commencement of the 2019 June 12 Democracy Day celebration being attended by world leaders.

The President waited to receive other world leaders before taking salute on the Saluting Dais and rendition of the National anthem.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo had arrived the venue about five minutes before the President.

The new Senate President, Ahmed Lawan and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila have also arrived at the Eagles Square.

Members of the late MKO Abiola’s family, including Kola were also at the Eagles Square.

Buhari also rode in a special inspection vehicle to inspect guards on parade and acknowledged cheers from the invited guests.

All the troops are also to carry out parade march in slow and quick time.

While military musical display, silent drill and cultural troupe performance are planned for the celebration, all troops will also take part in advance in review order.

The President is expected to deliver the Democracy Day Address before the celebration comes to an end.

However, President Muhammad Buhari has announced the change of the name of the National Stadium, Abuja, to MKO Abiola Stadium.

Buhari and MKO Abiola

Mr Buhari made this pronouncement during his speech at the Democracy Day celebration on Wednesday at the Eagle Square, Abuja.

June 12 was signed into law on Monday as Democracy Day as a mark of honour to Mr Abiola, the acclaimed winner of June 12, 1993, presidential election.

Abuja National Stadium

Highlights of the president’s speech on the occasion included the issue of infrastructure provision to rural areas to engender micro-economy in the country.

Mr Buhari also pledged to continue the fight against corruption, insecurity and economic development, adding that “we will enshrine a Nigeria that works for Nigerians and not just a few people” during his second tenure.

Champions league final to be replayed after Nations cup (see why)

2019-06-06T11:38:00.000+01:00

The second leg of the African Champions League final will be replayed after a VAR issue led to Moroccan club Wydad Casablanca walking off in protest and Tunisian side Esperance was awarded the victory.

Wydad refused to continue playing because their equalising goal with around 30 minutes remaining in the second leg was disallowed for offside and no video replay was available. The players had not been told the video system wasn’t working.

After a long delay, Esperance was awarded the Champions League title. But that outcome was overturned by the Confederation of African Football executive committee on Wednesday at a meeting in Paris, with the conduct of Esperance denounced.

No official announcement, or explanation behind the decision, was immediately made by CAF. However, committee members and the two clubs confirmed the decision.

Esperance are expected to appeal against the ruling, club officials said on Wednesday.

The Moroccan Football Federation, whose president Fouzi Lekjaa is a powerful figure within the CAF executive committee, said that the players had not been informed about the VAR technology being faulty.

Rules set by the game’s lawmakers, the International Football Association Board, state that a match cannot be invalidated because of VAR technology malfunctioning or if there is a wrong decision involving VAR.

The game will not be replayed until after the African Cup of Nations finishes on July 19.

The first leg in Morocco ended in a 1-1 draw and Esperance was leading 1-0 in the second when the controversy erupted in the second leg.
