Maulana Abbas Met Jethmalani’s Kashmir Committee

Srinagar, Jun 04, 2011: Kashmir Committee headed by noted lawyer Ram Jethmalani today met separatist leader & Chief Patron of jammu & Kashmir Ittihadul Muslimeen (JKIM) Maulana Mohammad Abbas Ansari, here and held detailed discussions on the prevailing situation in Kashmir valley.
Jehtmalani and his team visited Maulana at his residence in Nawakadal area of the city.
Maulana told the Committee that Kashmir issue cannot be resolved through bilateral talks between New Delhi and Srinagar and involvement of Pakistan in the dialogue process is inevitable.
“Kashmir issue can only be settled by trilateral talks because bilateral talks could not prove result oriented up till now. Kashmiris would not accept Kashmir resolution against their desires”, Maulana told the visitors.
Kashmir Committee was constituted during the Prime Ministership of A B Vajpayee in 2002 to open a channel of dialogue mainly with senior separatist leaders. The committee had several visits to Kashmir until suspension of its operations. Apart from Jethmalani, other members of the panel are senior counsel Shanti Bhushan, academic and editor Madhu Keshwar and journalist M J Akbar. The panel members who are on five-day tour of the state will try to work out a solution by meeting every stakeholder in the political sphere of Kashmir and cross sections of Kashmiri society.
In his interaction with the visting Kashmir Committee, JKIM chief said that activating the Kashmir Committee was a ‘good step’ for Indian civil society groups to make headway on the Kashmir issue. He said that Indians as well as Indian parliamentarians have a great role in resolution of Kashmir. Flanked by other party members including Masroor Ansari & General secretary Ghulam Hussain, JKIM also called for restoration of fundamental rights of the people and annulling of draconian laws prevalent in the state.
Maulana reiterated that Kashmir was a political issue and not communal or law and order problem.
Maulana told the panel that the future of India, Pakistan and Kashmiris was linked to the Kashmir issue, and stability could not be expected in the region until an acceptable solution was found.
“63 years have lapsed but Kashmir dispute remains unresolved. During this period, besides several military standoffs, two full fledged Indo-Pak wars and two localised conflicts took place on account of Kashmir issue. Today Kashmir has turned into a dangerous nuclear flashpoint. Until Kashmir issue was not resolved in accordance with the wishes and aspirations of the people, peace will continue to elude the south Asia”, Maulana said.

Ittihadul Muslimeen Yet to decide on re-joining Hurriyat Conference

Srinagar, June 2: Miffed at the “double standards” of Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Jammu & Kashmir Ittihdul Muslimeen (JKIM) today said it will decide on rejoining the amalgam only if the Working Committee of the party authorizes it.
“We will decide on rejoining the Hurriyat only after a meeting of the Central Working Committee of the party,” a spokesman of the JKIM, which was suspended last month for meeting Centre’s interlocutors against the amalgam decision, said.
The Executive Committee of the Hurriyat Conference revoked the suspension of JKIM during a meeting yesterday.
“The revocation of the suspension order is a welcome step. The decision has not only cleared the misgivings but also vindicated our stand,” the JKIM spokesman said. “Since the issue has been sent to the CWC of the party, it is the only authority to decide the future course of action,” he said adding an “extraordinary meeting” would be called shortly.
Accusing the Hurriyat chairman of adopting “double standards”, the spokesman questioned why no action is taken against those constituents who are involved in parallel activities and issuing such statements which even violate the Hurriyat constitution.
“It is surprising that the Hurriyat chairman observes silence when parallel activities are being carried out by some constituents despite a leader speaking about division of the state which is not only unrealistic and unacceptable but also against the Hurriyat constitution,” the spokesman said.
“When our leader (Ansari) demonstrated traditional Kashmiri gesture to the guests in accordance with the Islamic teachings, he is shown the exit while no action was initiated against others,” he said.
Criticizing the separatist leaderships for meeting one delegation and leaving another, the spokesman said, “There are several committees active on Kashmir. After Dileep Padgoankar led interlocutors, another committee headed by Ram Jethmalani has reached Kashmir.
“Although both committees are similar and designed to recommend measures after holding talks, they cannot take a decision. But if Hurriyat stand is that the dialogue process can prove result-oriented and purposeful only when initiated at a higher level, then what is the meaning of ignoring one and meeting the other,” the spokesman said.
He said members of such committees are “government employees” and there is no difference whether they are appointed by government or not.
The spokesman said Pakistan’s involvement is imperative for a final solution to the Kashmir issue.
“We strongly believe in unity and our stand on Kashmir issue is clear that it cannot be resolved through bilateral talks. Pakistan is a historic party and sidelining it cannot help in reaching a final settlement,” he said.

Highway to Muslim Unity

All praise is to Allah who has ordered us to take refuge in His book and reminded us of the abundance of His blessings and the magnitude of His bounty. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone without associate. He made faith beloved to us and beautified it in our hearts, and made disbelief, wickedness and rebellion loathsome to us. We ask Him Most High to make us among those who walk in righteousness.

I bear witness that our Master Mohammed is the servant of Allah and His Messenger. He gathered the hearts of the believers in love, and joined them with ties of co-operation and affection, until they were to each other like a single structure, each supporting the other.

O Allah, praise, bless and give peace to our Master Mohammed, his family and companions, who united in truth and so succeeded. They helped each other in righteousness and piety and so became powerful and dominated. May they all receive the satisfaction of Allah the Most High.

O you who believe: Fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims. Hold fast, all of you, to the Rope of Allah and do not be divided, and remember Allah's blessing upon you, for you were enemies and he brought your hearts together until you became brothers by His blessing, and you were on the edge of a pit of fire and He saved you from it. In this way, Allah clarifies His signs to you that you be guided.

O Muslims: Know that union is strength and division is weakness. A building will not be strong except by the cohesion of its bricks. A tower will not arise except on correct foundations and solid principles. Because of this, the Prophet saw that to build the Islamic state after his emigration from Mecca to Medina, it would be necessary to build it on cohesion and cooperation between the Muslim community of Aws and Khazraj, and the Emigrants and the Partisans. He overcame the hatred, ill will and continual conflict that existed between Aws and Khazraj before his emigration, and made filial ties between the Emigrants and the Partisans until they assimilated in a single path united by the profession of monotheism. They were one against any who opposed them, loving each other, merciful upon each other and affectionate with each other, each feeling the others pain, living in happiness, stability and tranquility.

Brothers in Islam and belief: The Jews from the beginning of history have born a buried loathing of Islam and its followers. There is nothing more indicative of this than the saying of the Most High to His Prophet may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, 'And the Jews and the Christians will never be satisfied with you until you follow their community. Say, 'Allah's guidance, it is guidance.' And if you follow their whims after what has come to you of knowledge, you will have no supporter or protector from Allah.'

Because of this, the Jews from time to time stoke the fires of enmity and hatred between the Muslims. 'They want to extinguish the light of Allah with their mouths and Allah rejects except that He should complete His Light, even though the Unbelievers detest it.'

They tried it in the time of the Prophet may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, igniting the fuse of war between Aws and Khazraj after the Messenger of Allah may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him had made amends between them. It was almost a tribulation were it not for the Prophet may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him taking control of the matter by saying, 'Will you respond to ignorance and I am among you?' The two sides returned to their senses, cast aside their weapons and asked their Lord for forgiveness.

The aggression against Muslims, expulsion, destruction and annihilation that is happening now is only a ring in chain of repression and oppression to which the Jews and their supporters have become accustomed. I wish my people understood!

I wish my people understood that Allah has promised them victory. He Most High said, 'O you who believe, if you support Allah he will support you and make firm your feet.'

O Muslims: Do not forget that the Jews have you in their sites. The Messenger of Allah may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him may have put out the fire of tribulation that they lit between Aws and Khazraj, but how many tricks have they played after the Messenger may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him. The greatest of these was the tribulation that killed the third Khalifa our Master Uthman and the fourth Khalifa our Master Ali, may Allah be satisfied with them. The Jews continue according to their plans that were drawn up a long time ago to destroy Muslim unity because they know the danger that Muslim unity represents to them. We have Allah who said in His Book about those Jews, 'Every time they kindle the fire of war, Allah extinguishes it. And they strive to spread corruption in the earth. And Allah does not love those who spread corruption.'

Muslims are still heedless of all of this. They divided into groups and parties, until nations called each other to them as the Prophet may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him informed us when he said, 'Nations shall soon call each other to you as people eating call each other to the plate.' Someone said, 'Are we few on that day?' He said, 'On that day you are many but you are froth like the froth of a flood. And Allah will wrench awe of you from the hearts of your enemies, and Allah will cast weakness into your hearts.' Someone said, 'O Messenger of Allah, what is weakness?' He said, 'Love of this world and hatred of death.' Where are they from the saying of the Prophet may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, 'The analogy of the believers in their kindness, mercy and affection for each other is that of a body. If one limb complains the rest call each other to it in vigilance and feverishness.'

What we see now in Muslim countries makes hearts break with pain and regret. Muslim blood is spilled, their dignity violated, their Holy sites denigrated, for murder to expulsion, from destruction to annihilation. All of this and Muslims around the world look on as spectators. The annihilation of a people does not push them to act, nor do they shed tears over the remains of a martyr. Is this Islam? Is this in accordance with the saying of Allah Most High, 'Mohammed is the Messenger of Allah and those with him are harsh against the unbelievers, merciful among themselves. You see them bowing and in prostration, seeking bounty from Allah and satisfaction'? Or with the saying of His Noble Prophet may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, 'Muslims are to each other as a building, each supporting the other'?

Is this the unity of which the Lord of Power, Mighty is He, said, 'This is your nation, one nation and I am your lord, so worship me'?

The first Muslims were cohesive and merciful to each other. They felt each other's pain no matter how far apart their countries were. As the poet said:

If a calamity befalls the plains of the Nile
The mountains of the Levant shake because of it

So why are the mountains of the Levant now too busy for that which has befallen the plains of the Nile?

The civil wars that have befallen Sudan are part of the chain of events that are happening now in the land of Palestine and other Muslim lands. It is the work of the children of Zion and their supporters.

What a loss for the servants! How can they sleep soundly while their brothers are slaughtered and expelled? What will they say to their Lord on the Day of Judgment when he asks them about the right of a Muslim upon his brother Muslim? What will they reply? I wish they understood the poet who said:

Be together my children should a
Disaster befall you and do not split up
Spears if they gather together refuse to break
And if they separate they break individually

O Allah, lift up our torment! We are believers! Save us from the plotting of oppressive tyrants, and gather the Muslims. Unite the ranks of the Mujahideen, and write victory and triumph for the weak. You are the best protector and the best supporter.

I say this and I ask Allah the Almighty's forgiveness for you and me. Ameen

IuM Takes Mirwaiz Head On Over Suspension
Srinagar, Apr 27, KONS: Hurling a slew of charges against Mirwaiz Umer Farooq for serious constitutional improprieties in the past, suspended Hurriyat (M) constituent, the Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (IuM), on Wednesday formally challenged the alliance chairman’s “discretionary powers” to take action against the party and its patron for receiving New Delhi’s interlocutors on Kashmir.
In reply to a show cause notice issued against it by the alliance, the IuM sought to turn the tables on the Mirwaiz, citing his overturning the Hurriyat (M)’s original policy on 2009 general elections, meeting the all-party parliamentary delegation from New Delhi during the unrest last summer, and his silence on taday’s Panchayat Elections as instances of his numerous arbitrary decisions which, according to the party, had gone without censure.
It said that the decision to suspend Maulana Abbas was “devoid of munificence and mutual respect” as, according to it, the name of the IuM patron had been played up in an unfavourable light by “irresponsible” statements from the Mirwaiz.
Maintaining that the interlocutors had dropped in at the residence of Maulana Abbas totally unannounced, and that the latter’s hospitality in keeping with Islamic mores in no way violated the Hurriyat policy on the issue, the party rejected its suspension by the Mirwaiz as “unconstitutional, peremptory and one-sided,” saying that the decision had been taken without giving it a chance to clarify its position.
“Your decision is unconstitutional, as according to section 2 of the Hurriyat constitution the authority on such measures is vested solely in the majlis-e-shura,” the IuM chief Maulana Masroor Ansari wrote to the Mirwaiz in his 6-page response today, asserting that his party’s suspension had been the Hurriyat (M) chairman’s personal move and not of the alliance.
“It is altogether a different matter that three days after the IuM’s suspension, the Hurriyat majlis-e-shura decided that the chairman had discretionary powers in such matters. Legal experts deem the decision as a total violation of the 1993 charter of the Hurriyat Conference,” he said.
“The unseemly haste with which you have suspended the IuM is surprising and without precedent in forum politics, particularly in a diverse formation like the Hurriyat Conference,” he said.
“Constitutional violations by alliance constituents have never been decided with such haste, but action has been taken only after discussing them in the majlis-e-shura,” he said.
“And there are several instances pertaining to you personally or to your party which have never been raised,” he said.
“In a majority decision on the 2009 parliamentary elections, the Hurriyat executive had declared the polls as a non-issue, and the acting chairman had made the announcement in a press conference on April 15. But only a few days later, this unanimous policy was altered and a new announcement made. Had any formal session of the Hurriyat Conference been convened to overturn the previous joint decision?” Maulana Masroor asked.
“And today, when panchayat elections are being held in the state, why has the Hurriyat Conference tacitly upheld the same decision and not bothered to utter a single word? Why this criminal silence?” he said.
“During last year’s uprising, when the Hurriyat had unanimously decided not to meet the all-party parliamentary delegation from New Delhi, why did you receive them when they called on you at your residence?” he said.
“Did you not have prior notice of the visit? The black arm bands that you wore (at the meeting) to protest against the killing of Kashmiri civilians and other circumstances indicate that you had,” he said.
“Only a few days ago, one of New Delhi’s interlocutors had disclosed that they were in contact with separatists, and that a representative delegation from your party had met the team during its Rajouri visit. Why did you not take any action in this case?” he said.
“The manner in which you have dragged the name of Maulana Abbas is an attempt to impair the public image of the leader and the party which have been fighting for the Kashmir cause since 1960,” he said.
“Maulana Abbas, who had worked alongside Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah during the Plebiscite Front days but parted ways even with him when he reneged on his stand, needs no introduction,” he said.
“He has also been shoulder-to-shoulder with Sofi Muhammad Akbar and your own revered father, the martyred Maulana Muhammad Farooq, after the Mo-e-Muqaddas episode,” he said.
“The Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen has been active for the resolution of the Kashmir issue since 1960, and has a brilliant and unimpeachable record. Its leaders and activists have undergone untold suffering and tragedy,” he said.
“While its top leadership and functionaries have repeatedly become the target of circumstances, Maulana Abbas himself has spent nearly 10 years in jail for demanding the right of self-determination for Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.
“His position in the Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen is much greater than a constitutional authority, and you are fully aware of it,” he said.

Abbas’s suspension, IuM terms move unconsitutional
Srinagar, April 27: Responding to the “show cause” notice issued by Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq over meeting between the interlocutors and Maulana Abbas Ansari, Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (IuM) chairman termed the suspension order as an “unconstitutional and unfortunate”.
Mirwaiz had last week suspended IuM after its patron Moulana Abass Ansari held deliberations with the interlocutors at his residence at Nawa Kadal.
In the 6-page letter to Mirwaiz, IuM chairman Masroor Abbas said the issue was blown out of proportion. “Our party will not accept this because the one-sided action has led to a serious jolt to our credibility. We have been up for the Kashmir issue since 1960 and our party is working sincerely for the cause,” he said.
He termed the suspension of IuM from Hurriyat as unconstitutional and unfortunate.
Referring to Moulana Abbas Ansari’s meeting with the interlocutors headed by journalist Dileep Padgoankar, Masroor said the party patron neither violated the Hurriyat decision nor held talks with them. “He only welcomed the guests in lieu with Muslim tradition,” he said adding that the meeting was not a ‘secret’ one.
“We have also attached a copy of email in which Moulana Abbas Ansari has rejected offer by the interlocutors,” he said.
He further said the allegations leveled against the party and its leader are baseless and untrue. “They (interlocutors) had earlier sent us invitation via email for a meeting which we rejected. But when they arrived at our residence without any prior appointment how could we have turned the guests away,” Masroor wrote to Mirwaiz.
He said the IuM has declared that Hurriyat is an asset of Kashmiri nation and his organization will remain part of it. “We will work to make it (Hurriyat) stronger,” he said.
Meanwhile, Hurriyat (M) has called a meeting of its executive and general councils to discuss the issue.

IuM challenges suspension, Ansari Responds To Hurriyat Notice
Srinagar, Apr 27: The Ittehad-Ul-Muslimeen on Wednesday responded to the show-cause notice of Hurriyat Conference (M) saying that its suspension was ‘in contravention to the constitution of the conglomerate’ and they had rejected talks with the interlocutors.
In a six-page reply to the notice served by Hurriyat (M), the IuM president Masroor Abbas Ansari said that their suspension was against the constitution of the amalgam.
“We wouldn’t tolerate the way in which the name of our party patron Moulana Abbas Ansari was blown. Due to this unilateral action, some quarters tried to damage the reputation of the party and its patron,” the letter stated.
The party said that they had rejected talks with the interlocutors appointed by the Centre in the wake of last year’s unrest in which 117 youth were killed by forces. Copy of an email turning down the interlocutors’ invitation has also been attached with the letter, IuM said.
About the meeting of Abbas Ansari with the interlocutors on April 20, the party said they had neither violated the constitution of the amalgam nor held talks with them.
“But he only received guests, which is the duty of Muslims," the letter said.
Masroor further said that Moulana had made it clear to the interlocutors that talks should be held directly with the Prime Minister and not with ‘any employee of Government of India.’
“We also told them that for any dialogue on Kashmir the proposal of Hurriyat Conference should be implemented to show the seriousness of New Delhi and the issue should be solved through tripartite talks,” it added.
Hurriyat (M) is now meeting on Thursday to discuss a number of issues including the IuM letter.
“This issue would also come up for discussion tomorrow. It is a general meeting,” Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq told Greater Kashmir.

United Nations had accepted Kashmir as an international dispute

Srinagar: In an extraordinary meeting held at Jammu & Kashmir Ittihadul Muslimeen (JKIM) head office Srinagar, chaired by its President, Maulana Masroor Abbas Ansari and attended along with General Secretary Ghulam Hussain by other senior members, the Party unanimously decided that they will continue their door to door campaign in order to strengthen the organization from ground level.

While addressing a party meeting Masroor Abbas Ansari said that India is not sincere to settle the Kashmir dispute and is using delaying tactics. Maulana Ansari said that the United Nations had accepted Kashmir as an international dispute and passed resolutions for its solution. “The intransigent stance of India on Kashmir is the main hurdle to resolve the long-pending dispute,” he added. He said that the lingering dispute could only be resolved through implementation of the UN resolutions and India must take concrete steps in this regard. “The people of Kashmir have never accepted the illegal Indian occupation and will continue their struggle to achieve their right to self-determination”, Ansari maintained.

Ansari urged India to end its policy of oppression in Kashmir and create a conducive atmosphere for tripartite resolution of the Kashmir dispute.

Masroor Ansari said that the recent disclosures of Wikileaks about gross human rights violations were not new to the people of Kashmir who themselves were witnessing and bearing various forms of torture being inflicted upon them by the Indian police and troops for the last two decades.

Masroor Ansari appealed UN, OIC and human rights organizations including Amnesty International and Asia Watch to put pressure on India to stop human right violations and settle the Kashmir dispute.

24 Zilhajja: Eid Mubahilla

"But whoever disputes with you in this matter after what has come to you of knowledge, then say: come let us call our sons and your sons and our women and your women and ourselves and yourselves, and then let us invoke the curse of God on the liars." (3:61)

This Quranic verse refers to the famous event of ' Mubahila ' which took place in the year 10 A.H. against the Christians of Najran.

A deputation of 60 Christians of Najran headed by Abdul Masih their chief monk priest came and discussed with the Holy Prophet (S) the personality of Prophet Jesus (A). The Holy Prophet (S) told them not to deify Jesus for he was only a mortal created by God, and not God Himself. Then they asked who the father of Jesus was. By this, they thought that since he was born without a father the Holy Prophet (S) would helplessly accept Jesus' father being God himself. In reply to this question was revealed the Verse:

“Verily, similitude of Jesus with God is as the similitude of Adam; He created him out of dust then said He unto him BE, and he became.”

When the Christians did not agree to this line of reasoning, the top-mentioned verse was revealed enjoining upon the Holy Prophet (S) to call the Christians to Mubahila. To this the Christians agreed. They wanted to return to their place and would have the Mubahila the next day.

Early next morning the Holy Prophet (S) sent Salman al-Farsi (R) to the open place that was fixed outside the city for the historic event to erect a small shelter for himself and those he intended to take along with him for the contest.

At the appointed hour, the Christians witnessed the Holy Prophet (S) entering the field with Imam Hussain (A) in his lap, Imam Hasan (A) holding his finger, and walking beside him Lady Fatima (A) and followed by Imam Ali al-Murtada (A). The Holy Prophet (S) on reaching the appointed spot stationed himself with his daughter, her two sons and her husband, raising his hands towards the heaven said:

“Lord these are the People of my House.”

The Chief Monk on knowing that the baby in the lap of the Holy Prophet (S) was his young grandson Imam Hussain (A), the child walking holding the Prophet (S)’s hand was his first grandson Imam Hasan (A), the Lady behind him was daughter his only surviving issue was Fatima (A) the mother of the two children, and the one who followed the Lady was his son in law the husband of Fatima (A), addressed the huge crowd of the people who had gathered on the spot, and addressed them saying:

“By God, I see the faces which, if they pray to God for mountains to move from their places, the mountains will immediately move!

O believers in the Jesus of Nazareth, I will tell you the truth that should ye fail to enter into some agreement with Muhammad (S) and if these souls whom Muhammad (S) has brought with him, curse you, ye will be wiped out of existence to the last day of the life of the earth!”

The people readily agreed to the advice counseled by their Leader. They beseeched the Holy Prophet (S) to give up the idea of the agreed Mubahila and requested for themselves to be allowed to continue their faith, offering to pay ' Jizya'.

18th Zilhajj - Eid-E-Ghadir

On 18th Zilhijjah of the year 10 A.H. (10 March 632 CE) ,after completing the last pilgrimage ,the Holy Prophet(pbuh) along with around 100,000 Muslims reached a place called 'Ghadir-e-khumm' near Mecca. The following verse was revealed:

Ya 'ayyuhar Rasoolu ballig maa unzila ilayka mir-Rabbik. Wa illam taf'al famaa ballagta Risaalatah. Wallaahu ya'simuka minan naas. Innal'laaha laa yahdilqawmal kaafiriin.

O Messenger! deliver what bas been revealed to you from your Lord; and if you do it not, then you have not delivered His message, and Allah will protect you from the people; surely Allah will not guide the unbelieving people. [Quran 5:67]

On receiving the above verse, the Holy Prophet stopped at that very place & delivered a speech an extract of which is :-

[....It seems the time has approached when I shall be called away (by Allah) and I shall answer that call. I am leaving for you two precious things and if you adhere to them both, you will never go astray after me. They are the Book of Allah and my Progeny, that is my Ahlul Bayt. The two shall never separate from each other until they come to me by the Pool (of Paradise)." Then the Holy Prophet (pbuh) in an attempt to remind Muslims of his own authority over them said: " Do I not have more right over the believers than what they have over themselves? " Muslims answered unanimously " Yes, O' Messenger of God ". This served as a stepping stone for the announcement of his hier and vicegerent. The Holy Prophet(pbuh) held out the hand of Ali(as) and said:

The Holy Prophet then continued to say:

"O' God, love those who love him, and be hostile to those who are hostile to him."

Prophet Muhammad had been discoursing all the other revelations among the muslims regarding the tenets and practice of the faith and about material life, and what could this verse of surpassing urgency mean and why was he admonished that if he did not reveal that message then his mission would be unfulfilled! Why had he been warned so strongly by Allah to deliver the message right away.

According to Shia tradition, Prophet Muhammad had been apprehensive about declaring his own son-in-law and cousin Ali ibn Abu Talib as his spiritual (Amirul Momineen, Commander of the believers) and secular (Caliph, King) heir, for fear that it would divide the nascent Muslim community. The rich Muslims were already jealous of Hazrat Ali's favored position with Prophet Muhammad (being married to Hazrat Fatima, being his cousin, appointed as Commander at many important battles) and in the above revelation God reassures him.

Al Muayyad talks about the Gadhir-e Khumm appointment in his Majalis as follows:

"It must be borne in mind that after the death of the Prophet the belief in the Wilayat of the Imams from his progeny is as important a part of our religion as the belief in the Wilayat of the Prophet in his lifetime. This is supported by the Tradition according to which the Prophet is reported to have said at ‘Ghadeer Khum', "Am I not more precious to you than your own-selves." This is an echo of the Qur'anic verse which says, "The Prophet is more dear to the ‘Momins' than their own-selves to them." It is said, that in response to this question by the Prophet, when the ‘Momins' said "Yes, you are dearer to us than our own lives", the Prophet said, "O God, be witness to their admission". After this he said, "‘Ali is the master of one who acknowledges me to be his master. O God love those who love ‘Ali. Help those who help ‘Ali. Desert those who desert ‘Ali. Let the truth accompany ‘Ali wherever he goes."

Prophet Muhammad felt great relief upon accomplishment of his mission of declaring Hazrat Ali his successor and legatee, wasi, and thereupon received the final revelation:

"This day have I perfected for you your religion and completed My favor on you and chosen for you Islam as a religion" Quran 5:3.

"Surely those who swear allegiance to you do but swear allegiance to Allah; the hand of Allah is above their hands. Therefore whoever breaks (his faith), he breaks it only to the injury of his own soul, and whoever fulfills what he has pledged with Allah, He will grant him a mighty reward." Quran (48:10)

"And, He it is who made the stars for you that ye maybe rightly guided by observing them in the darkness of the land and the sea; Indeed we have made plain the Signs for the people who can know. Qur'an (6:98)

The Holy Prophet (sas) said:

"As the stars in the sky are the source of guidance to the travelers, the Holy Ones of my Ahli-Bayt (the Imams descended from the Prophet's family) are the source of guidance for the people. And, as the stars will remain in the sky until the day of judgment, the earth will never be without a Divine Guide from my Ahl al Bayt, that is an Imam".

Several verses in the Quran speak about the Light of God and Rope of Imamat which is a continuous chain (Hablillah) since Hazrat Adam, through all the Prophets including, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, Muhammad and after him through the hereditary Imams. The Mahdi - Savior that is referred to by all Prophets and religions is referred to the Noor of Allah, Living and present in Mowlana Shah Karim Al Hussaini Hazar Imam. Allahuma Salli 'ala Muhammadin wa Ahl-e Muhammad.

In the Fatimid era, Eid-e Ghadir became an even more important holiday as the Imams were also the Caliphs and many blessings were showered on the community.

"Morale and enthusiasm were kept up by the observance of various festivals of general Islamic nature; particularly those of Shia and Ismaili. Fridays and the two Idd days were the days of festivity. Moreover, the Shia festival of Idd-e-Ghadeer Khum and the 10th of Muharram were also observed.

Birthdays of the Ahli-Bayt (the Prophet's family) and the Imams and certain important dates of the year were celebrated. Imam took part in the celebrations of the festivals. Local festivals of secular origin, like the "Flooding of the Nile" and "Navroz" (beginning of spring) were also encouraged by the Imam. Imam al-Muiz would hold huge receptions at his palace; processions were taken through the town and the whole town was illuminated". - From History of the Imams

Everyday, we repeat in our prayers:"Guide us to the right path: The path of those whom Thou hast blessed." Quran (1:6-7)

Every time I read the Quran, I find more and more passages, pointing to this Grace of Allah, to the presence of the Everliving Guide.

"And say those who disbelieve: "why hath not a sign been sent down unto him (Muhammad)"; Verily thou art a warner and for every people there is a guide" Quran (13:7)

It also shows that voices are being raised at the international level to resolve the Kashmir issue and pressure is mounting on India.

Indeed the Kashmiris and pro-freedom leadership in Kashmir was encouraged by the statement of support from Ayatollah Ali Khameini which has clearly accepted Kashmir as a disputed territory.

As a symbol of Islamic unity and honour and the emblem of monotheism and spirituality, the Holy Ka’bah, during the Hajj season, is host to the ardent and hopeful hearts, who come hurrying from all over the world to the birthplace of Islam in response to the call of the Glorious Lord. At this time, the Islamic Ummah can have a bird’s eye view of its own great extent and diversity, seen through the eyes of its envoys who gather here from all over the world, and be witness to the profound faith that rules over the hearts of the followers of the True Religion, and appreciate its great and peerless heritage.

This self-discovery of the Ummah enables us as Muslims to become aware of the position which is worthy of them in the world, today and tomorrow, and to keep moving towards it.

The expanding wave of Islamic awakening in the world today is a reality that heralds a bright future for the Islamic Ummah. This powerful surge started three decades ago with the victory of the Islamic Revolution and establishment of the system of the Islamic Republic. Our great Ummah has continued to march ahead non-stop, removing the obstacles from its way and conquering new fronts. The sophisticated stratagems of the global Arrogance and its costly maneuvers aimed at countering Islam are also a consequence of these victories.

The extensive propaganda of the enemy to spread Islamophobia, its offhand efforts to create discord among Muslim sects, to incite sectarian prejudices, to bring about pseudo-confrontations between the Sunnis and the Shi’ah, to create disunity between Islamic states and to aggravate their differences, to change them into hostility and unsolvable conflicts, its employment of intelligence and espionage outfits to propagate corruption and immorality amongst the youth—all these are nervous and bewildered responses to the steady and firm advances of the Islamic Ummah towards awakening, honour and freedom.

Today the Zionist regime is no more the undefeatable monster of 30 years ago. The United States and the West are also no more the unquestionable decision-makers of the Middle East that they were two decades ago. Contrary to the situation that existed ten years ago, the nuclear know-how and other complex technologies are no longer considered inaccessible daydreams for Muslim nations of the region. Today the Palestinian nation is an acknowledged paragon of resistance, the Lebanese nation has single-handedly demolished the fake awesomeness of the Zionist regime and emerged as the victor of the 33-day war, and the Iranian nation is at the vanguard of the movement towards the looming peaks.

Today the arrogant United States, the self-styled commandant of the Islamic region and the real sponsor of the Zionist regime, is bogged down in the quagmire of its own making in Afghanistan. As a result of all its crimes against the people of Iraq, it is in the course of becoming isolated in that country. It is hated more than ever before in disaster-stricken Pakistan. Today, the influence of the anti-Islamic front which since the past two centuries has acted as a despotic overlord over Islamic nations and states and plundered their resources, is receding before the heroic resistance of the Muslim nations.

On the opposite side, the wave of Islamic awakening is steadily advancing and growing in depth day by day.

On the one hand, this hopeful and promising situation should inspire us, the Muslim nations, to keep marching ahead towards the desirable future with ever greater confidence. On the other hand, the past lessons and experience should make us more vigilant than ever before. This general imperative undoubtedly calls for greater commitment from religious scholars, political leaders, intellectuals and youth than the others and requires them to be at the vanguard of the struggle.

The clear and living message of the Noble Qur’an is addressed to us:

You are the best nation ever brought forth for mankind: you bid what is right and forbid what is wrong, and have faith in Allah. (3:110)

In this majestic address the Islamic Ummah is declared as one which has been brought forth for the sake of humanity. The aim of its birth is the good of mankind and its deliverance.

Its major duty is to urge what is good and to forbid evil while maintaining unshakeable faith in God. There is no ‘right thing’ (ma’ruf) more significant than rescuing nations from the satanic claws of the global Arrogance, and there is no ‘wrong thing’ (munkar) uglier than dependence on the Arrogant and servitude to them.

مولانا عباس انصاری نے اپنے خطبہ نماز میں اس بات پر تاکید کی کہ ہمیں موجودہ حالات میں عید کو سادگی سے منانا چاہئے اور عید کی خوشیوں میں ان غریبوں، یتیموں اور بیواوں کو بھی یاد رکھنا چاہئے جو موجودہ نامساعد حالات کی وجہ سے مشکلات میں مبتلا ہوئے ہیں۔ مولانا عباس انصاری نے عید الاضحی مے مقدس موقعہ پر حریت قائدین خصوصاً میرواعظ مولوی محمد عمر فاروق کی بلا جواز نظربندی کی مذمت کرتے ہوئے اسے مسلمانوں کے دینی معاملات میں بیجا مداخلت قرار دیا اور حکومت کو خبردار کیا کہ وہ ایسے دین مخالف اقدامات سے پرہیز کرے ورنہ اس کے جو بھی نتائج برآمد ہوں گے اس کی تمام تر ذمہ داری حکومت پر ہی عائد ہوگی۔

JKIM reminded the UN to implement its resolutions on Kashmir

Srinagar, 27 Oct, 2010: Senior Hurriyat Conference Leaders Maulana Mohammad Abbas Ansari & Masroor Abbas Ansari’s plan to march towards the United Nations Observers Office in Srinagar to remind the United Nation Body to implement its resolutions on Kashmir was foiled by State & Police authorities by putting him under house arrest at his residence.

President of Ittihadul Muslimeen Masroor Ansari described October 27 as the blackest day in the history of Jammu and Kashmir. He said it was on this day when India sent its armed forces to Kashmir to occupy it forcibly.

Ansari said India had promised right to self-determination to the people of Jammu and Kashmir through the United Nations resolutions but later on India backtracked from its promise and started delaying tactics to prolong its illegal occupation. He said that despite of the worst kind of oppression and suppression, India had miserably failed to crush the ongoing freedom struggle.

Ansari has said that if the US President, Barack Obama is serious to resolve the Kashmir dispute then during his upcoming visit to India, he should impress upon India for implementing the UN resolutions which guarantee right to self-determination to the Kashmiris.

Chief spokesperson of Jammu & Kashmir Ittihadul Muslimeen (JKIM) Ghulam Hassan Majrooh has strongly condemns the house arrest of Hurriyat leaders including party’s Chief patron Maulana Mohammad Abbas Ansari & President Maulana Masroor Abbas and said that such tactics would not suppress the ongoing freedom movement.

He appealed to Indian human rights groups to raise the voice against human rights violations and let the people of Kashmir decide their future according to UN resolutions. He said that stability of both India and Pakistan depends on a peaceful solution of issue of Kashmir according to the aspiration of people of Kashmir.

Meanwhile a huge procession was taken out from Mirgund, Pattan by Ittihadul Muslimeen workers which marched towards the United Nations Observers Office in Srinagar to present a memorandum to the said office to implement its resolutions on Kashmir. The protestors chanting pro Islam & pro freedom slogans rejected the occupation of Kashmir by Indian army on 27^th Oct, 1947. The march was foiled by Police by dispersing them through brute force.

PETITION TO THE PRESIDENT OF UNITED STATES FROM THE PEOPLE OF JAMMU & KASHMIR

Honorable President Obama,

We, the undersigned, want to bring to your notice that in 1947, India and Pakistan got their independence from British rule. Simultaneously, this led to the realignment of princely states between the two countries. It was at that time in 1947,that India, following its military intervention in Kashmir made a solemn commitment, promise and pledge to the people of Kashmir that they would be allowed to determine their political future through a free and fair referendum. India, Pakistan and the international community reaffirmed this pledge through the UNCIP resolution Aug 13, 1948 and Jan 5, 1949.

It is regrettable that for the last 63 years India has blatantly reneged on this commitment; while systematically consolidating its control over the disputed state of Jammu and Kashmir through brute military power Five generations of Kashmir have suffered immensely under the brunt of this large-scale militarization.

The last two decades in particular have seen massive deployment of forces not only on the borders but also in every street and town square, every village and hamlet in Kashmir. Protected by highly repressive measures like the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, Public Safety Act, National Security Act, which provide legal immunity to armed forces against prosecution, these forces have been committing widespread and systematic human rights violations with impunity.

However, inspite of this brutal oppression the people of Kashmir remain steadfast in their struggle for self-determination. This has been amply demonstrated by the ongoing non-violent agitation against Indian rule waged by our youth. To throttle our peaceful movement the Indian state in total defiance of its claim to be the worlds largest democracy has unleashed the lethal capacity of its high-powered arsenal stationed here on an entire population. The valley of Kashmir has been converted into an armed garrison where prolonged brutal curfew and militarized surveillance has become a norm. From June this year the Indian forces have shot dead more than 110 unarmed protestors and bystanders, mostly children and teenagers, many more lie injured, maimed and blinded. Almost every day unaccounted numbers are being illegally detained, tortured and humiliated.

We fear that this jackboot response and vengeful assault on our life and dignity is taking our next generation to the abyss of despair and anger. It is compounded by the silence and indifference of the world community. More than anything Kashmir is a humanitarian issue, and needs a humane course of action. The future of 14 million people remains at stake. How can we even begin to imagine a peaceful and stable South Asia?

It has been our sincere endeavor to engage in a meaningful process with the Indian State for the resolution of the Kashmir conflict. In fact many of us took great risks to tread the path of peacemaking and participated in multiple rounds of talks with the Indian government. However, the Indian State remains resilient in its resolve to tread the path of intransigence. Successive governments in India have failed to evolve a substantive and meaningful discourse on Kashmir. For them dialogue is about procrastination and crises management. This cavalier attitude on their part has severely damaged the credibility of the institution of dialogue. As of now it remains shrouded in skepticism and cynicism, as we continue to grapple with unfulfilled promises, false hopes and deception. India to us is not a democracy but a stratocracy seeking our surrender and submission

On the occasion of your scheduled visit to India as president of the United States of America, we wish to remind you Mr. President that during your election campaign you had stated that on assuming office you would make positive efforts towards the resolution of the Kashmir issue.

Mr. President, the Kashmir struggle for self-determination is at a critical juncture. It is vital that the international community responds and has an informed and substantive engagement with it. Prolonging this long standing conflict can only extract increasing human cost not only from the people of Jammu and Kashmir, but also from the people of South Asia. Kashmir conflict has dire consequences for the 1.2 billion people living in the entire region.

Mr. President, it is our ardent hope that during your visit you will use your influence to urge and prevail upon India to take steps for a peaceful and permanent resolution of the Kashmir dispute in accordance with the wishes and aspirations of the people of Kashmir. Kashmir is a political problem and it can be resolved only through political means. We have for long been advocating a meaningful result oriented dialogue between India Pakistan and the people of Kashmir. To facilitate this process we seek the appointment of a special rapporteur of international stature. The facilitation of a special rapporteur is indispensable to help rebuild trust amongst the stakeholders and reinstate their confidence in the processes of dialogue.

Mr. President, in the interim it is imperative that international efforts are accelerated to stress upon India to put an end to its policy of ruthless persecution and repression in Jammu and Kashmir and initiate practical measures which can help bring some relief to the hapless people living here.

• Withdrawal of armed forces from civilian areas.
• Release of political detunes, activists, and students
• Repeal of all repressive and draconian laws.
• Setting up credible and time bound processes of accountability to identify and punish those guilty of gross human rights violations.
• Restoration of the right to peaceful assembly, association and demonstrations.

Senior leader of Kashmir's All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) and Chief Patron of Jammu & Kashmir Ittihadul Muslimeen (JKIM) Maulana Mohammad Abbas Ansari has said that the appointment of interlocutors by Indian government to hold talks on Kashmir issue is a futile exercise primed for deceiving International Community and wasting time as it would fetch nothing. Asking Indian Government to adopt a realistic approach, the ex chairman of Hurriyat Conference (M), in a statement issued in Srinagar today said holding talks with the interlocutors of Indian government won’t serve any purpose.
Indian Home Minister P Chidambaram on Wednesday named three interlocutors, eminent journalist Dilip Padgaonkar, Information Commissioner M. M. Ansari and noted academician Radha Kumar to hold talks with all shades of opinion in Jammu and Kashmir as part of efforts to bring peace to the state.

The Statement of Maulana Abbas Ansari follows as under:
The government of India has announced the names of three interlocutors and has given them the job of holding talks with all shades of opinion in Jammu & Kashmir. We’ve never been against the talks and APHC was committed to bring about a peaceful and political solution to the dispute through meaningful dialogue, but we have said it again and again that Kashmir is a political dispute which could be resolved politically through peaceful negotiations keeping in view the historical perspective of the dispute. We think that no peace plan for Kashmir can go forward without realization of the right to self-determination of the Kashmiri people. The international community stands committed to the people of Kashmir and their right to self-determination and first Prime minister of India Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru has promised at different times to give the people of Kashmir this right. There are three parties to the dispute and till talks are held between all the parties involved especially the true representatives of Kashmiris, no headway can be achieved. On our part we are ready and willing to engage and sustain a meaningful and irreversible process of dialogue designed to develop and implement a solution to the Kashmir dispute that is acceptable to all sides – India, Pakistan and above all the people of J&K.

In the past, many interlocutors and committees led by KC Pant, Ram Jehtmalani, NN Vohra and others had been formed but they all failed in their endeavor. In the past we have talked to the level of Prime Minister. However these talks have not yielded any results because the aspirations of Kashmiris and root cause of the dispute was always neglected. Ironically, while extending talks offer India has always been reiterating that Kashmir is its integral part. It is not acceptable to Kashmiris who have been rendering unflinching sacrifices since 1947 for the right to self-determination.
In 2005, after years of back Channel discussions, we choose to start a meaningful dialogue process with the Government of India to resolve the Kashmir Issue and we continue to be committed to that objective. We took risks to do so and some amongst us sacrificed their lives to tread the path of peacemaking, while others amongst us paid with our credibility. We give some suggestions with a view to generating a favorable political climate for a purposeful dialogue but these suggestions were never taken seriously by the Indian government.
The initiatives taken by Indian government in the past to hold dialogue with Hurriyat Conference in Kashmir have suffered due to lack of seriousness and sincerity on part of Indian side. This failure has bred cynicism and destroyed hope. The non-serious approach of Indian government towards Kashmir problem has eroded the credibility of the institution of dialogue. The institution of dialogue deserves a serious approach and restoring its credibility, keeping in view the sensitivities embedded in the Kashmir issue. We were expecting that the Indian government will form the group of interlocutors, while taking into consideration past experiences regarding the dialogue. But it seems yet again, a causal approach has been adapted which again reflected New Delhi’s lack of seriousness with regard to the Kashmir issue. The appointment has once again trivialized and belittled the institution of dialogue and further eroded its credibility. It seems there is no change in the mindsets at decision making levels in New Delhi.

We think that Indian government again failed and showed its non-seriousness to resolve the Kashmir dispute by appointing a non political group which has no mandate to solve the Kashmir problem. Actually India wants to use the dialogue process to buy the time. Recent protests are the biggest threat to Indian rule in Kashmir in many years. The appointments are part of measures aimed at defusing tension. More than 100 Kashmiris have been killed since June in protests against Indian rule. It follows the thousands of lives already lost over the past decades due to the unresolved Kashmir dispute. The announcement of 8 point programme on 25th September and now the names of non political interlocutors is just the repeat of India's convention of confusing and deceiving the Kashmiris and the International community. We are now wary that this appointment of interlocutors represents only an effort at short-term crisis management on part of India and that there is no clear commitment nor path towards effective resolution of the Kashmir Issue and addressing the aspirations and interests of the people of Jammu & Kashmir. We have seen in the past that it is only when a major crisis erupts that visible efforts are made to engage and understand our aspirations. And as soon as the immediate crisis subsides, the demonstrated and inherent political complacency and negligence is restored.

In these circumstances, New Delhi's effort is a non-serious rather joking one. After the decision to appoint a set of interlocutors was taken at the Cabinet Committee on Security on September 25th, we were thinking that India will realize the sensitivity of the issue this time but it has not. In our joint memorandum to All Parties Parliamentary Delegation of Indian political parties, we had suggested constituting a Parliamentary Committee of all political parties of India and on the same pattern we suggested constitution of Parliamentary Committee of all political parties of Pakistan. Both these panels would have started dialogue and it would have given credence to the institution of the dialogue irrespective of what party would have been in power in New Delhi and Islamabad. Instead of working on that New Delhi, came up with this joke. There is no scope of engagement with them. We suggested some measures to improve the situation on the ground but no relief has been given to people and instead arrests, detentions, restrictions and curfews continue. Nothing of this sort has been done. We expected a political committee comprising members of the opposition as well as the governing parties. Such a committee would talk with Pakistan as well as with Kashmiri leaders.
By appointing academicians and journalists to the committee, the Indian government has sought to make light of the Kashmir problem. We think it is yet another joke played with the people of Kashmir.
It was high time for implementation of the Confidence Buildings Measures suggested by the Hurriyat Conference to Indian government. The need of the hour is to improve the ground situation in the Valley before initiation of talks. On one hand India wants to revive the talks and on the other arrests and harassment of Kashmiris is going on unabated. We have given four-point proposals to improve situation in the Valley but it has met with deaf ears and troopers and cops are leaving no stone unturned to crush the ongoing movement.
In these circumstances we think that the appointment of interlocutors is a mere waste of time and thus a futile exercise. No serious step seems forthcoming from New Delhi. They are just engaged in buying time. India should come forward seriously and include Kashmiris in tripartite talks to resolve the issue.

Nobody in Kashmir will accept interaction with Indian interlocutors as we have already put forward the suggestions and conditions for the talks before Indian government. We stick to our principle stand for future talks and will accept only tripartite dialogue that also for the resolution of the Kashmir issue once for all. I want to maintain that we are not seeking concessions but solution. Unless Indian Government officially accepts to solve the Kashmir issue as per the wishes and aspirations of Kashmiri people through tripartite dialogue, and releases all the prisoners concerned, repeals AFSPA and other draconian laws, starts demilitarization, halts Human Rights Violations; there is no justification of dialogue even the bilateral one. Kashmir dispute has reached such a stage where it demands involvement of the stakeholders at the highest level. So this long pending issue has to be resolved by the leadership of India, Pakistan and Kashmir in accordance with aspirations of Kashmiris

We want to make it clear that we do not doubt the integrity or credibility of the interlocutors. Although the three interlocutors are eminent and highly respected personalities in their respective fields, but we feel that their nomination for the Kashmir mission reflects a lack of appreciation of the problem at hand in the state. There is a journalist, an academic and a researcher. We have no problem with them but the issues are more political in nature and out of their reach. Radha Kumar, who heads the Nelson Mandela Institute of Peace in Jamia Milia Islamia, has been engaged in back-channel discussions with us when the Hurriyat Conference was chaired by Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and then Syed Ali Shah Geelani. She had visited the State several times and interacted with us on several issues related to Kashmir problem. Recently also, she was in the Valley and tried to meet Hurriyat leaders but we refused to met the delegation as we believe that the talks and atrocities cannot go together. Our immediate demand was that the torture, killing and arrest of innocent civilians must stop immediately. Mr Padgaonkar was part of Kashmir committee led by eminent lawyer Ram Jethmalani. Noted educationist and economist M. M. Ansari was a professor and director at the Hamdard University before becoming information commissioner.
In our view, the question is of deliverance and authority to take important decisions. One thing is clear that the Interlocutors have very less space to solve the Kashmir issue. So it may not serve any purpose. In view of the political nature of the present crisis, New Delhi should hold talks on it at the highest level. We had asked for constituting an all-party delegation of Parliamentarians of India and Pakistan to address Kashmir issue and pave way for resolution of the long-standing dispute. During the past 63 years, bilateral dialogues have failed to pave way for Kashmir resolution. This issue has sparked off three wars between India and Pakistan so far.

Indian Home minister has also said that the panel will cover views of all the three regions - Jammu, Ladakh and Kashmir. Now it is important to see whom they would be talking to in Jammu and Ladakh. As usual, they would be taking to those who are in the mainstream camp and have nothing against India and surely will skip those who are spearheading the peaceful protests against the Indian rule in their areas. That remains to be seen. Talking to people in Jammu and Ladakh would be okay, but the primary issue is Kashmir. It is a major issue, and New Delhi should have taken initiatives in line with the four-point proposal forwarded by us.

We also suggest to Hurriyat Conference and to the whole pro freedom camp that they should also put forward the joint penal of their own interlocutors to negotiate with the interlocutors appointed by the government of India as this is the time to introduce and internationalize the dispute to the world by appointing non political people like senior lawyer, journalist, educationist, economist and others, who are known in the public and have the credibility and knowledge to deal and negotiate with Indian leadership.

Senior APHC Leader and Chief Patron of Jammu & Kashmir Ittihadul Muslimeen (JKIM) Maulana Mohammad Abbas Ansari has reacted sharply to influential Sunni institution of India Darul Uloom Deoband and its social front Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind reference to Kashmir as an integral part of India and the demands of its people should be addressed within the framework of the Indian constitution.

In a statement issued on Monday in Srinagar, Maulana Abbas has termed it a sterile moribund rhetoric and said that “Although they (Darul Uloom) have talked about the excesses being committed on the people of Kashmir they have ignored the real problem of Kashmir and called Kashmir an integral part of India.’’

Ex Chairman of the moderate faction of the Hurriyat said, “We don't think there is anything to welcome in their statement. Their baseline toe Indian line and we don’t see Kashmir from a Hindu-Muslim perspective. It’s a political issue, which needs to be resolved taking into consideration the political aspirations of Kashmiris. Nothing is possible within the framework of the Indian or Pakistani constitutions.

He said Kashmir was an "internationally recognised dispute" and the problem could be resolved through dialogue among India, Pakistan and leadership of the state.

Maulana Abbas reiterated that Jammu and Kashmir is the UN mandated disputed territory whose political future is yet to be ascertained. ”Jamiat-Ulema-i-Hind (JuH), a body of Deoband clerics, on Kashmir reference to Kashmir as an integral part of India is contrary to the United Nations record. It is also contrary to various promises and commitments made by the Indian leadership to the people ofJammu and Kashmir in different international Fora and also on the floor of Indian parliament,” Ansari said.

Maulana Abbas stated that former Indian Prime Minister, Nehru’s words were still ringing and echoing when he said, “We had given our pledge to the people of Kashmir and subsequently to the United Nations; we stood by it and we stand by it today. Let the people of Kashmir decide.”

Maulana Abbas Ansari however, welcomed Jamiat's stand seeking revocation of “draconian” laws such as the controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act.

"We welcome Deoband clerics' stand seeking revocation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA). We also appreciate the concern shown by them over human rights violation in the Valley. But Kashmir is an "internationally recognized dispute" and it should be resolved through dialogue among India, Pakistan and leadership of the state", the statement said.

Maulana Abbas also appreciated the concern shown by them over "violation of human rights" in the Valley but at the same time said that highlighting the atrocities in Kashmir at the conference had been negated by the assertion that the state was an integral part of India.

“The conference did not focus attention on the basic problem at all,” Ansari said. “The entire stresswas on issues that spring from the basic problem.”

“The Deoband ulama should not have let anything prevent them from speaking the truth in discharging their religious obligations,” he said.

“They cannot be unaware of the historical fact that Kashmir was a separate and sovereign state which India occupied in 1947 solely by military power,” the statement said.

Asking Indian Government to adopt a realistic approach, the ex chairman of Hurriyat Conference (M), in a statement issued in Srinagar today said holding meetings with the delegation won’t serve any purpose.

Reiterating that Kashmir is a political dispute which could be resolved through peaceful negotiations, Maulana Ansari said that we’ve never been against the talks and APHC was committed to bring about a peaceful and political solution to the dispute through meaningful dialogue, but talks and atrocities cannot go together. So the torture, killing and arrest of innocent civilians must stop immediately.

"Unless Indian Government officially accepts to solve the Kashmir issue as per the wishes and aspirations of Kashmiri people through tripartite dialogue, and releases all the prisoners concerned, repeals AFSPA and other draconian laws, starts demilitarization, halts Human Rights Violations; there is no justification of dialogue even the bilateral one. All this will be a futile exercise and wastage of time. Kashmiris will keep on struggling against Indian rule more and more force and rigidity," Maulana said.

Referring to the Indian prime minister’s All Parties meeting and the decision to send an All-party delegation to the troubled Kashmir Valley to meet all sections of people and gather all shades of opinion, Maulana Abbas Said: "nobody in Kashmir will accept interaction with Indian Political parties as we have already put forward the suggestions and conditions for the talks before Indian government. We stick to our principle stand for future talks and will accept only tripartite dialogue that also for the resolution of the Kashmir issue once for all."

He said that Kashmir is an internationally accepted disputed territory with which the future of millions of people is associated. The international community stands committed to the people of Kashmir and their right to self-determination and first Prime minister of India Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru has promised at different times to give the people of Kashmir this right. Maulana Abbas said that no peace plan can go forward without realization of the right to self-determination of the Kashmiri people and reiterated that issue could only be resolved through meaningful dialogue. But such dialogue process was suitable only when the four point confidence building measures put forward by the APHC were taken into consideration. Then a permanent and sustainable solution of the dispute through meaningful parleys and keeping in view the historical perspective of the dispute could be achieved.

Jammu & Kashmir Ittihadul Muslimeen, JKIM (meaning 'Unity of Muslims', name written in Urdu, Arabic & Persian as: اتحاد المسلمين, Ittihadul Muslimeen) is a Muslim political party in (Indian held) Jammu & Kashmir founded to provide to the people of Jammu and Kashmir a viable, democratic and broad based political platform that would reflect their true will and aspirations and endeavor to realize the vision of a peaceful and prosperous future for the people of the State.
In 1962, Maulana Mohammad Abbas Ansari, an esteemed & revered Shiite religious personality and the Founder and Chief Patron of JKIM succeeded in discovering the cause of prevailing mental lethargy of the Shia Community of Kashmir and took positive steps to eliminate it. He felt the reform was necessary not only in academic field but also in political field. To work on the political front, the first and largest political party of the Shiite community of Kashmir named "Jammu & Kashmir Ittihadul Muslimeen" (JKIM) was established. JKIM works for the political, Social and economic welfare of the Muslims of Kashmir and demanded a UN supervised plebiscite in Kashmir. It has organized various seminars and conventions which called for the union of the divided parts of Kashmir and holding of plebiscite in accordance with the United Nations resolutions of 1948 - 49.

Political Activities of JKIM

JKIM appeared on the political scene of Kashmir in 1963 amidst the Holy Relic Movement when the episode of disappearance of Holy Relic of Prophet Mohammad (Peace be upon him and his household) from Hazratbal Shrine appeared in the Valley. To channelise people’s anger against the unfortunate episode of the theft of Holy Relic, a united front called “Holy Relic Action Committee” came into being which later assumed political overtones and guided people of Kashmir. JKIM president Maulana Abbas became its spokesman. The whole population rose as one man demanding not only the restoration of the Holy Relic but also the withdrawal of Indian occupation forces from the State. Ultimately the Holy Relic was restored.
JKIM was also instrumental in forming a political party named “Peoples Action Committee” in March 1964 to seek the right of self determination for the people of Kashmir. The government of India took serious exception to the activities of JKIM and Maulana was arrested in 1964. He was arrested again in 1965 for 15 months.
JKIM vehemently opposed the holding of “State political convention” in 1967-68 and described it as deviation from the path of truth. JKIM president reminded the participants that real solution to Kashmir Problem is in the right of self-determination & this Ideological stand saw him again behind the bars. During 1971 Indo-Pak conflict he once again advocated confinement of right of self determination to the people of Kashmir and to silence the voice he was again arrested.
After Indira Gandhi-Sheikh Abdullah accord of February 1975 the Plebiscite Front was wound up and Sheikh Abdullah revived his National Conference. JKIM opposed this accord tooth and Nail and described it as unacceptable to the people of the state. Consequent upon the signing of the accord, JKIM brought all the people of Identical Ideology on a single political platform and declared creation of “Peoples United Front” to work against the sell out. The then Pakistan Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto gave a call for strike on 28th February to protest against the accord and due to the hard efforts of JKIM & Peoples United Front the strike was total and telling.
The period 1975 -85 witnessed the continuous struggle of JKIM & Maulana Abbas against the occupationists and brutalities and atrocities of their puppet regimes in Kashmir. JKIM played the role of opposition leader when it was mandatory for a political party in Kashmir to seek blessings from Sheikh Abdullah. During this period JKIM always stood for the right of self determination. JKIM also launched the campaign against liquor trade in Kashmir. Ruling regime took strong opposition to these activities and Maulana was again detained and charged with mutiny and conspiracy against the Indian government. Trial was conducted in a closed room in central jail, Srinagar.
In 1986 JKIM assembled Muslim scholars, politicians and parties from all sects and sections on a single platform named "Muslim United Front" (MUF), on the fundamental issue of strengthening Muslim community. Its stance on Kashmir was clear and unambiguous; that it has been occupied by fraud and brute force and its people had yet to exercise their right of self determination. Maulana was selected conveyor of the Front. In 1987 Front accepted the challenge of the then chief Minister Farooq Abdullah to fight elections of state assembly to show the world that kashmiri’s does not consider itself to be a part of India emotionally. Although all the previous elections of the state legislature were massively rigged by the pro-Indian ruling parties, front fought elections. This election was the proverbial last straw for the people of valley. This was the turning point in the history of Kashmir which culminated in armed rebellion against Indian authority.
JKIM leadership along with Maulana Abbas was arrested in April, 1990 and released after two years of detention. After his release from jail Maulana Abbas along with his other colleagues has tried to give the right direction to the independence movement. He once again started organizing different political, religious, social and humanitarian organizations and played an outstanding role in the formation of "All Parties Hurriyat Conference" (APHC) in 1993. This forum provides a common platform and guidance to the ongoing freedom movement under a collectively and unanimous political leadership.
JKIM on the platform of APHC kept up its campaign for a just solution to the Kashmir issue, and continued, at every level, to discharge its duty of guiding the Kashmiri people and articulating their aspirations. The ruling clique, perceiving the historic alliance as a threat, was always on the lookout for a chance to break it and crush all efforts aimed at resolving the Kashmir issue. Putting these plans into practice, Maulana Abbas Ansari was arrested once again in September 1999.
The APHC on July 12, 2003 unanimously elected JKIM chief patron Maulana Abbas Ansari, as its Chairman at a meeting of the Executive Committee members. Out of the seven constituents, representatives of six parties were present at the meeting. Abbas Ansari was the fourth chairman of the Hurriyat who replaced Abdul Ghani Bhat on the latter’s completion of his three-year term. Ansari is also, incidentally, the first Shia to head the Hurriyat Conference.
As the true voice of the people of Kashmir and the person who represents the changing mood in Kashmir, Maulana Ansari headed the Hurriyat at this crucial juncture. Soon after taking over as Chairman, he called for an immediate ceasefire between the security forces and the militants. He also suggested the re-opening of the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road so that the people of both parts of Kashmir could meet their kin.
During his tenure as Chairman of APHC Maulana Abbas initiated a dialogue process with Indian government on the basis that it should be unconditional, level based and exclusively centered on Kashmir problem. An APHC delegation led by Maulana Abbas Ansari negotiated with deputy prime minister of India L. K. Advani in New Delhi on 22nd Jan 2004. The APHC delegation stressed that an honorable and durable solution should be found through dialogue. It was agreed that meeting was the first significant step in the dialogue process and a step-by-step approach would lead to the resolution of all outstanding issues relating to Jammu and Kashmir. The APHC delegation was committed to the enlargement of the dialogue process to cover all regions of Jammu and Kashmir and concerns of all communities. The next round of APHC discussion with Indian government took place in the latter part of March.
On May 21, 2004 in a crowded Public gathering at martyrs’ graveyard in Iddgah, Srinagar Hurriyat chairman Maulana Abbas Ansari announced that he was resigning his post in an effort to bring about the reunification of the coalition's factions.
On 7th April 2005, first passengers from either side of the Line of Control cross divided Kashmir as the first Srinagar-Muzaffarabad Bus Service was launched. Hurriyat leaders including Maulana Abbas Ansari visited Pakistan and Muzaffarabad in June 2005 crossing LOC by bus.

Three Fronts of Struggle

As all movements for right to self determination do, we have been struggling for our rights on political, diplomatic and religio-cultural fronts. Following are brief details of each of them:
(1): Political Front: We have been projecting our ideology, our Aims and Objectives and our demands through literature, open letters, memoranda, rallies, protest demonstrations, strikes, press conferences; conferences, seminars and meetings with dignitaries. We have been forming alliances with other Kashmiri organizations. We have also been launching campaigns in favor of or against different events and practices which have positive or negative effects on our freedom struggle. On scores of occasions, big number of our members including senior office bearers and those of our youth wing has been arrested after our protest demonstrations in J&K. On many occasions those arrested had to spend upto years together in Indian and IHK jails. On these occasions the demonstrators face baton charges and tear gas from police. (Details in the following pages)
(2): Diplomatic Front: Having been formed in 1962, JKIM started its very struggle on diplomatic front also. We attended international conferences, held press conferences and met dignitaries on international level. We also briefed diplomats collectively. We corresponded with international organizations and institutions. After his release, our Chief Patron Maulana Abbas undertook an overseas tour to present the freedom movement of Kashmir in its correct perspective and highlight the atrocities being perpetrated on Kashmiris. In United States, United Kingdom, Iran, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia he apprised the leadership and the public about the struggle going on the state and the repression unleashed by the Indian security forces. Maulana also gave a comprehensive presentation of the Kashmir cause at the OIC meet in Casablanca (Morocco) and Doha (Qatar) in 1994 & November 2000 respectively. Maulana Abbas was one of the senior Hurriyat leaders to meet the world leaders including Pakistan president, General Pervez Musharraf, Iranian President Syed Mohammad Khatami, Prime ministers of SAARC Countries, European community diplomats and foreign ambassadors in New Delhi. We apprised them about the political situation of Kashmir and invited their respective governments to mediate to resolve Kashmir issue.
(3): Religio-Cultural Front: JKIM is also active in religious and cultural fields. JKIM is bound to perform preaching and religious deeds under its wide range programme. It includes removal of communal & sectarian differences, revival of Islamic thought & philosophy and promulgation and issuance of Islamic rules. The official organ of the party “Monthly Safina” has illuminated the sleeping literary taste in the Urdu & English reading masses of the Valley. JKIM has set up committees and shadow organizations particularly “Al Abbas Relief Trust” to work in educational, cultural and social fields. Social reformation and welfare services have been stressed in the fundamental objectives of the Trust. The party is benefiting thousands of students with standard education in rural areas of Kashmir where monthly fee, uniform, books and other expenses of poor and orphan students is borne by the party.

Organizational Structure of JKIM

The organizational structure of JKIM is as follows:-
(1): Chief Patron: JKIM works under the leadership of a religio-political personality eligible for issuing religious decrees.
(2): Central Office Bearers: These include the President, Three Vice Presidents (the president of AJK is one of them); General Secretary, Deputy / Assistant Secretaries; Publicity Secretary; Chief Organizer, Dy. Chief Organizer; Secretary Finance and his Deputy. All the Central Office Bearers are nominated to the office by the members of Central Working Committee (CWC).
(3): Central Executive Council (CEC): 14 member CEC includes all the Central office bearers, three members (elected by CWC) and President and Secretary of JKIM youth wing. The CEC is the chief decision making organ of the organization.
(4): Central Working Committee (CWC): The 36 members of this 41 member committee are elected for two years by the General Council of JKIM and the remaining 5 members are nominated by the Chief Patron of the Party.
(5): JKIM has District Councils in all the districts of Jammu & Kashmir, Zonal Executive Committees, Tehsil Committees and basic units (branches) in different Mohallas and villages of the State. All these constitute the Central Electoral College or General Council of JKIM. The District Councils, Zonal Committees, the heads of the basic branches are elected by their respective bodies. The Central Committee of JKIM youth wing is elected by the heads of its Zonal Committees.
(6): Standing Committees: The work of different fields has been assigned to respective committees which function under instructions and guidance of the CEC through the President.
These Committees are:-
(A): Policy and Planning Committee: This comprises of the heads of all the Sub-Committees and the Senior Vice President, General Secretary and Presidents of all District Councils.
(B): Sub-Committees: These Sub-Committees are:- (1) Political Committee, (2) Diplomatic Committee, (3) Publicity Relations Committee, (4) Religious Affairs Committee, (5) Organizational Committee, (6) Finance Committee.
(C): Auxiliary Committees: The following Auxiliary Committees have been set up and are working at appropriate time: (1) Economic Affairs Committee (2) Human Rights Protection Committee (3) Educational Affairs Committee (4) Public Welfare Committee.

JKIM’s Stand on the Kashmir Issue

(1) Jammu Kashmir Ittihadul Muslimeen (JKIM) believes that the treaty of Amritsar of 1846 affecting the sale of Kashmir by the British Govt. to Maharaja Gulab Singh of Jammu is legally void, politically invalid, historically obsolete and morally inchoate.
(2) JKIM declares Kashmir issue as an unsettled International dispute which has threatened the very existence of Kashmiris as a nation besides endangering the peace and stability in South Asia. The peaceful and political solution of the Kashmir issue lies in giving the right of self determination by both the dominions India and Pakistan to the people of Jammu and Kashmir as promised by not only India and Pakistan but also promised by the security council of United Nations Organization.
(3) Despite the commitment made by Government of India in equivocal terms to ascertain wish of the people on the question of accession, by way of referendum, till date the Government of India has not fulfilled its promise and the condition of accession. It is settled that accessions can be either revocable or irrevocable. The Governor General of India itself made accession revocable and directed that the accession of the Kashmir state with dominion of India will be decided by the people of state. The Government of India itself did not accept the instrument of accession signed by the fleeing Maharaja.
(4) JKIM believes that the accession of Kashmir with India is inchoate. Government of India cannot hold people of Kashmir. It must and in fact is under an obligation to ascertain the will of the people. People of our state have absolute choice in the matter of their continuing with Government of India or to annual the arrangement. But under no circumstance Govt. of India can refuse to ascertain the political will of the people. In last 60 years holding of referendum on the question of accession has been avoided. JKIM believes that govt. of India is first interested in altering the community composition of our people purely on the basis of religion and then hold the plebiscite as and when the present majority community is reduced to minority. We won’t let this happen. We want referendum now and we will leave no stone unturned in our efforts to pressurize Govt. of India and Pakistan to hold plebiscite in the whole state so that the commitment made to the people of Kashmir on October 27, 1947 is fulfilled. For the purpose whatever means we may have to employ in achieving our political objective, will be adopted. Failure on the part of India to hold plebiscite provides complete morale basis to our movement and on going struggle. Our movement has roots in our conscience. It can never lie. Our generation after the other will fight. With every day the movement will become more intense and effective. Our movement has ideological basis. It cannot be suppressed no matter what the cost is. We are determined to alter the status quo and put an end to Indian occupation on our soil.

Political Ideology of JKIM

The main pillars of the political ideology of JKIM are:
(1) That Jammu Kashmir State spread over about 217,000 sq. kms and comprising Indian occupied areas (Kashmir Valley, Jammu and Ladakh provinces), Pakistani controlled parts i.e. Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan (all those territories that formed it on August 14, 1947)is an indivisible political entity and that the Whole State is a disputed territory. The whole State is geographically and politically one unit and indivisible. No part of this State is constitutionally or legally a part of any country.
(2) That Kashmir issue is not a territorial dispute between India and Pakistan but concerns the issue of letting Kashmiris exercise their inherent, internationally recognized, pledged, fully deserved and unfettered right of self-determination.
(3) That no solution of Kashmir issue, not based on free and unfettered will of atleast the majority of the people of the entire State, can be termed as an equitable one.
(4) That the best solution of the issue is to re-unite the divided Jammu Kashmir State, demilitarize all regions and give people the right of self determination. (However we concede that the final status of the State should be subject to the approval by the majority of the people of the entire State through a free and unfettered expression of their will.)
(5) That all citizens of the entire State should enjoy equal political, economic and social rights and freedom of expression and faith, irrespective of their race, religion, region, culture and sex.
(6) Any person who has been forced out of the State from 1947 till the attainment of freedom will have the legal right to return to the State and adopt permanent residence. (This would include the legal descendants of the people belonging to the State. The State shall be bound to provide legal and financial help to such people.)

Aims and objectives of JKIM

Within the ambit of and scope of foregoing basic principles and political ideology, following shall be the aims and objectives of the party:
(1) To strive for unity of Muslim Community and struggle for achieving religious tolerance and harmony with other religions and sects.
(2) To make peaceful political struggle to secure for the people of Jammu and Kashmir State the exercise of the right of self-determination in accordance with the UN charter.
(3) To strive and struggle for achieving people's all fundamental and human rights of life, faith, expression, assembly, property, trade and residence etc to the inhabitants of Jammu & Kashmir.
(4) Take legal and timely steps for protection and perfection of political position, geographical boundaries, cultural bequests and Islamic identity of Jammu & Kashmir.
(5) To co-operate with and seek co-operation of like minded parties, groups and individuals within and outside state in political and other matters of public importance.
(6) To establish contact and rapport with intellectuals, religious scholars, parliamentarians, politicians, academicians, journalists and other opinion building sections of societies of Pakistan and India and throughout the world and plead for their support to the cause of the people of the State.
(7) To work for betterment of Muslim Ummah and to take positive steps for maintenance of educational setup and removal of illiteracy, poverty, unemployment, social evils etc.
(8) Start an all round scheme to awaken religious and political consciousness to every member of the nation.

Basic Principles of JKIM

The basic principles of JKIM regarding politics and religion are as follows:
(1) Religion and politics are inseparable and for a clean politics Islam provides the best teachings, but at the same moment JKIM is against exploiting religion for materialistic benefits which true Muslims should abhor.
(2) Among the definite goals of JKIM is a strong and united Muslim community as we believe that freedom requires unity of all masses and a support of all classes. We have made it a main purpose of our struggle to bring Muslims on a single platform and establish a moment that would safeguard their future and revive Muslim ideals.
(3) The freedom struggle of the State of Jammu and Kashmir is a religion-based peaceful and non violent national liberation struggle. By describing it a non religious or secular movement or any type of communal agitation means playing with the sentiments of the majority of the State. Our party considers the freedom struggle in the State as people’s struggle for freedom against the foreign occupants and in contravention of international principles.
(4) That the people of the state only, as sole masters of their motherland are competent to determine the future status of the state. But the governments of India and Pakistan, even without having any locus stand in the matter of determining the future status of the state, do in view of the geo-political realities prevailing, practically emerge as parties involved and effected by the problem and thereby their concurrence becomes necessary for a practical, peaceful and lasting political settlement of the future status of the state. In no case, however, can the J&K problem is deemed to be a border dispute between the two or more countries of this region.
(5) That an early solution of the problem is essential or restore basic human rights to the people of the state and to relieve the sub-continent from political and socio-economic tension and to eliminate the possibility of a nuclear conflict in this region.
(6) Patriotism means faithfulness towards one’s country, towards its people, towards the history and culture of the community and safety and security of its borders and preservation of its sovereignty. Anybody or any party rejecting the internationally accepted interpretation of patriotism is not a patriot from our party’s point of view.
(7) The interpretation of “azaadi” is that the forcible occupation of the State is to be resisted by the people of all the five units of the State by organizing peaceful civil disobedience movement and demonstration of public power based on the principle of non-violence and through democratic process.
(8) Regarding the future of the State, JKIM believes that it is to be liberated from occupational forces and a society based on the concept of peoples power is to be established in which (a) every man and woman will have the freedom to pursue his or her economic, religious and political beliefs (b) the governing system will be based on the principles of democratic justice and religious harmony and tolerance (c) the state will be responsible for providing the people their basic needs, education, sustenance and medical facilities (d) no person belonging to the State will be forcibly deprived of his right to life and residence on the basis of his religious beliefs, ethnicity, caste, creed or language.
