This month has been very special for my career at Intel. A few weeks back i got to know that our social media team has been given an ‘Intel Achievement Award’ for the work we did in 2012. So when i got to know that our team had won, and that me and my wife were invited to San Francisco for the award ceremony, i was excited. And of course like most people would do, i wanted to share the news with the most important people in my life – my wife, parents and sister. The trip to San Francisco was amazing, it felt great to be part of the winning team, a memory that i will definitely cherish for a long time. But what touched my heart and brought absolute joy to me was that just days before i left for the award ceremony, i got this congratulatory greeting card from my mom. Well you see this is not the first time she has sent me a card, she has been doing this forever but what is so special about this card is that she must have really struggled and taken a long time to pen down these sentences. Last year around the same time my mom suffered from a stroke which made her loose some of her motor functions and sensation in her right hand, which is also her writing hand. The tough woman that she is – she has been practicing to use the hand and write again for many months now. I know it has been such a frustrating journey for her to relearn to write with her hand but that certainly has not deterred her from writing her son an encouraging congratulatory note.

Mom you are truly special and a gift from God. Your note to me is a true labor of unconditional and ever lasting love. Happy Mothers Day to you! I love you.

During my junior college days when I was tossing career options in my head, journalism was something that I was actively considering. And so in my pursuit to find out more, I decided to approach some journalists. Some were nice, some were even inspiring and then there were some who came across as dodgy. But there was this one guy in particular whose words made think real hard, he told me – “News is rare, most of what you will read or hear from a journalist will be their opinions formed based on some facts and many assumptions.” And then he said – “You know what is even more dangerous than lies, its half-truths”. I was quite saddened by what he said and in my quest to prove him wrong, I started picking up random published news stories and researching them. To my shock many stories had been miss-represented or had missing facts and even though some were factual, they just showed a very one sided view of a story. In short most of the stories were not well researched and just put out there to meet a deadline or an agenda. In my disappointment I went back to him to let him know about my findings and he said something even more profound – “Journalism is a lifelong commitment to the pursuit of the truth, it either enlightens a society or plunges it into darkness”. In this era of Social Media where everyone is now a journalist I wonder how much thought do people give to this underlining principle of commitment to the truth. And I wonder how many people are hurt and how many lives are destroyed with the half-truths that get published. Its something to introspect about. Think before you hit the like, submit or Re-tweet button. In the end only the truth shall set us free.

Getting married in 2012 has definitely made this year special for me, and I am thankful to God for all the blessings we have received from family and friends. But more than anything else I have been encouraged and inspired by some of my close friends who have endured unimaginable tribulations and tough times in 2012. Your resilience, steadfastness and rock like faith has moved my heart, you know who you are, you are my true heroes. To end I am borrowing a simple quote from Taylor Swift – “This is a new year. A new beginning. And things will change.” God Bless! And have an awesome 2013.

Today an innocent Indian girl died, clearly before her time, all due to the brutality of four scums of the earth and may they forever rot in Hell. I am angry, upset and even ashamed of my Indian roots but the reaction of the media, politicians and many sections of the Indian society has had my blood boiling. Many are behaving like it has happened for the first time and surprised that people in the country are even capable of this kind of crime. While truth is that many have all along been ignoring the signs, because some citizens and the political system in general has been so obsessed with their own selfish pursuits and greed. Yes! ‘personal greed’ is the mantra that many live by. As long its not our children, our home, our car, our career that is affected then its fine, rest we don’t care and it’s someone else’s responsibility. But some might argue that this is too much to ask for, then let me ask how many have even fulfilled their basic duty to their country and society.

To me if you fit in any of these points on this list then you don’t deserve to mourn for this brave girl’s death.

- If you evade your taxes or don’t pay your fair share of taxes. Maybe if you had there would be better transport infrastructure and this incident wouldn’t happened. Who knows maybe there would be more budget to have more security and cops.

- If you are a politician, member of parliament, or part of the government as a minister or civil servant or in the police force and you have siphoned off tax payers money or taken bribes to do your job. You are the actual rapist here and India doesn’t need you.

- If you as parents have always discriminated against the daughters in your family and made her feel inadequate, unequal, a burden to your life, participated or witnessed dowry harassment or girl child foeticide.

- Or you have enjoyed and foolishly exposed young impressionable minds to sleazy Bollywood item numbers that demean woman as a total sex object.

- Use your contacts or money power to escape punishment or rob some deserving student of their college admission. Screw your ‘Jugad’

- Damaged or polluted public infrastructure

- Skipped an opportunity to make things better in society with the infamous ‘Chalta Hai’ attitude.

Wake up India!! We all know where the problem lies.

This is a story from my engineering days; I had developed this great friendship with a hostel mate called Abhi. Abhi was very unique character and someone I spent countless hours just talking about the meaning of life. His thoughts ran deep and he had this thirst for a greater meaning to things, maybe that’s why we really clicked. Abhi’s room was a level below and so whenever I returned from classes, it was like a ritual to go say hi to him before I headed up into my room. And so one day I think it was in the month of June 1992, I did my routine visit to his cigarette-smoke filled room and he said something to me that I will never forget. He said “Jammy, I am going to play you a new song today that will stick with you for the rest of your life, it’s called Nothing Else Matters”. Well he was spot on cause even till today this song stirs up emotions in me. Here’s to great music!

Whenever i listened to the Gladiator Soundtrack, emotions would stir up in my heart and eventually i would tear. I thought it just made sense to write something that came out as an inspiration from this song, and so here it is. Please do listen to sound track while you read it and hopefully you feel what i felt.

Now You Are Free

His heart sank as he saw the sun set on his first day as a butterfly. To him it symbolized the end of all good things and life as he knew it. He felt he would never again see the birds in the wide blue sky, the colorful flowers that he could smell from a mile, and the magnificent journeys he had made in the day, would he ever experience them again? He prayed to his great creator to bring back the sun. He begged his creator that he was not done with his life and was not quite ready to give it up yet. Why do all good things have to come to end he wondered?

And as the darkness overcame the brilliant rays from the sun he could feel his life slip away. The night brought strange creatures and sounds and the butterfly knew he would not make it to see the light of the next day. At Dawn he saw a strange tunnel of light appear and he remembered the wise man from the day, whose hand he rested a while on. He recalled what the man had told him that moment “the darkest hour of the night is dawn my friend”, the significance of which he knew now. As he lay there on a leaf, an angel appeared and lifted him whispering to him “Now you are free”, “You are free from this world, free of from all your lives lived on this earth, free from your bonding and responsibilities. You can now rest in God’s kingdom where the sun never sets and birds never stop singing and love is in abundance”. “Now you are free”
