Pulau Santap is a picnic area at the confluence of Sungai Benus and Cheringging rivers at Janda Baik. It's a long stretch of river and natural rainforest surroundings, making it popular with families for day trips or overnight camping. 'Pulau' means island, while 'Santap' is a royal word for eating - In ancient times, a small island rose above the confluence of rivers, where it was used as a leisure spot for meals by Pahang's sultans. Over time, the island was eaten away by erosion and no longer exists today.

Several resorts and chalets have opened up accommodation along this spot, but the main area has a small park with broad section of shallow river to enjoy.

Upon seeing this ragtag team in the vicinity, a kindly widow immediately offered help and tended to the mercenary's wounds. The man was thankful and deeply cherished the kindness. As a mark of respect for this kind widow, the leader of the warrior pack would always advise his men to call on the woman whenever they were in the vicinity.

Recently I made a trip to a truly luxurious destination, Idaman, a villa hidden away in the rain forest above Janda Baik, that's just 35 kms from Kuala Lumpur. If you are unfamiliar with this location, it’s towards Kuantan, not far after the exit for the Genting Highlands. The village has a little fruit and vegetable market that‘s a popular stop for people traveling along the Karak Highway. Up in the hills behind the village, you’ll find Tanarimba, a gated community set in over 700 acres of rainforest. One fifth of the area has been chosen for low-density development with an Eco-sensitive philosophy, while the remaining 500 acres is being maintained as a forest reserve.

After driving through the guarded entrance to Tanarimba, we climbed for about 15 minutes, passing paved roads but very few houses. When we arrived at Idaman, my first thought was that it was massive, and my second was to note the wonderful peacefulness of the place. We were greeted by the charming hosts, Mr. and Mrs. Yap, who went out of their way to make sure that all our needs were met. We were then given a tour of the house, starting with the imposing entrance hall.

Climbing just a few steps, we entered the master bedroom, and when I released that I would be sleeping here, I was thrilled. My room had a king-sized bed with sliding glass doors opening onto a huge balcony. The house, which sleeps 10, is built on multiple levels, and my room was almost at the top.

I felt as if I was floating amongst the treetops, looking over on a magnificent view of the jungle stretching way down below then on up to the mountainside beyond.

The walk-in closet was huge and the bathroom was even bigger, with a rain shower, a large Jacuzzi, two sinks and a bidet along with the WC.

In addition to the main door to the bedroom, there was a back entrance that led to a spiral staircase: up to the highest spot in the house, the office, and down to the main living room. This room was generously furnished with three couches, two armchairs and lots of cushions grouped around a large coffee table.

Two of the bedrooms were off the living room, one with a queen-sized bed and one with bunk beds, and they shared a bathroom. Going down to the lowest level gave access to the basement lounge, and two more bedrooms, both with queen beds and a shared bathroom.

The dining room and fully-equipped kitchen were on an in-between level and there was a pretty garden in the very center of the house. On the level below there was an open-air lanai with dining table, lovely for an al fresco meal.

A little further down was the swimming pool, which beckoned enticingly from the landscaped garden, and I couldn’t resist wandering to the tree house, an inspired addition that is perfect for a children’s playhouse, a quiet read, or for my favorite choice, a nap.

Mrs. Yap is from Thailand, and she delighted us with a Thai meal for dinner: Tom Yam Gung, Som Tam (papaya salad), Thai style Red Snapper, Chicken in Pandan, Kailan and Mixed Vegetables served with rice, all very tasty and delicious. So much excellent food and fresh air made me somnolent. It wasn’t long before I retired to bed with a good book so that I could relish a little quiet solitude before sleeping.

When I opened my eyes in the morning, the tall trees of the surrounding jungle were silhouetted against a red sky. It was just before dawn, and the birds of the Montana forest were whistling and warbling to welcome another day. Who could sleep amid such beauty? I moved to the daybed on my balcony to welcome the rising sun. Then I made a quick coffee, and went out for a meander up the hill. I stayed on the road, but there are numerous trails within the nature reserve, which would be fun to explore.

A Western breakfast was served and the morning passed all too quickly. We drove into Janda Baik for lunch, and I discovered why so many people stop there to pick up fresh produce. I bought passion fruit at a fraction of the price I’d pay in KL. Back at the house there was still time for a swim and a read, but inevitably it was time to leave. I must admit that it was difficult to tear myself away.

Idaman is filled with beautiful collector’s items - sculptures, woodcarvings, original paintings and plenty of books. It’s the perfect escape from the city, a haven in which to relax and gain nourishment for the soul. It gives new meaning to the words, “luxury tropical retreat”, and the memories of my room in the treetops will lull me to sleep for many nights to come.

Introduction

HAWA Resort & Training Centre not only caters for all your training needs but also give you a quiet and peaceful tranquil setting, primary jungle on one side and a crystal clear river on another. The resort cater for your conventions, seminars, any form of trainings, workshops, and family days as well as other recreational needs.

We are located at the secluded green enclave of Janda Baik in the state of Pahang, Malaysia. Janda Baik is set amidst a small valley bounded by thick rainforest with cool rushing brooks and waterfalls. A mountainside of dramatic peaks, valleys and ravines ranging from 1500 to 4500 feet above sea level, laced together with picturesque streams and waterfalls. Situated somewhere between the towering hills of Genting Highlands and Bukit Tinggi, it is no surprise that the climate here is much cooler at between 23° and 28°Celsius during the day and below 22°Celsius in the evenings.

A approximately 45KM north from the capital city of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, we are accessible by 30 minutes drive along the Gombak - Karak Highway. Also easily accessible by public transports from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), making us the perfect venue for all your corporate or recreational needs.

We put up for a night at Hawa Resort, after visiting Bentong Animal Farm. This resort was chosen by Starfield for stargazing activity.

I found this row of chalets to be the best accomodation at Hawa, located beside the river. Unfortunately, some of the chalets are facing the canteen and wash area which can be noisy and dirty. "Pulai" or "Sentul" chalet has the best location. It fits 2-3 people or a family of 4 with 2 young children.

Transport Directory

Drive from capital city of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur

Janda Baik is just 45 kilometers North of Kuala Lumpur. About an hour drive via Gombak-Karak Highway. After the first tunnel, turn left at Bukit Tinggi Selesa Homes to Janda Baik.

Or, make a U-turn and turn left after petrol station Petronas and McDonalds. On that left turn, all the way in and there will be a junction and a 'Welcoming Arch’, turn right to Janda Baik.

From here, it is the main access to Janda Baik. There are signboards along the roads. Along the journey, you will see TanaRimba and Electricsola Factory on your right side.

After the factory, goes straight until you reach 2nd concrete bridge or follows ILMU signboard.

Take Me Home, Country Road

A weekend getaway. A retreat. A private estate. A place I can call home. It was during the weekend that we took a one hour drive to the village of Janda Baik, through the winding and narrow country road, to be immersed in the beauty of nature that is Aman Rimba. To say that I was impressed would have been an understatement, for I was blown away to know that there is a 5-star class resort tucked in the middle of a laid-back kampung. Once we parked our car, someone came out from the reception area with a huge warm smile, welcoming us to this gorgeous estate. Following closely behind, another sweet lady was bearing a warm towel and a cold cucumber drink, for us. What did I tell you? I felt at home.

Towards Aman Rimba

Situated merely an hour’s drive away from the bustling metropolitan of Kuala Lumpur, Aman Rimba is nestled within the hills, the river and the natural tropical beauty to offer the essence of kampung life and serenity to those who seek it. The idea of starting a private estate came about from the wonderfully hospitable couple of Sabri and Wati. Both of them hailing from kampung, they wanted to preserve the rustic lifestyle and the safe haven that a kampung offers, to pass on to their children. Armed with an empty piece of 3-acre land, they built a suite after another, starting with the main wooden house with a room. They used this place as their weekend sanctuary, to relax, swim in the nearby river or even to have BBQ parties. Later, when the children grew up, they started bringing friends, and more people started to fall in love with this place. The rest, as they say, is history.

Aman Rimba Private Estate

The concept of Aman Rimba is selling privacy. The whole estate consists of 6 suites that can accommodate up to 20 persons.

“The entire 3-acre estate is your private home for the entire stay. We dedicate the entire place for you and your group and no strangers will be allowed in. All the 6 suites and all the facilities are only for you and your group to use.”

If that is not privacy, I don’t know what is.

1. Sireh

Sireh is the first ever suite to be built in Aman Rimba. It is also the one that retains the most charm, from its structure on stilts, to the wooden walls and the antique decorative items within, it certainly defines kampung-living with style. It’s obvious that much thought has been given on every detail within the house. The four-poster bed is romantic and modern, while the living area is traditional and comfortable, with wooden furniture playing the main role. If you’re bored, get a book from the nearby shelf, or lie down on the comfortable couch just next to the window while listening to the birds chirp. It’s hard not to love this house.

2. Serai

Situated merely a few footsteps away from the cafe is Serai, a standalone house that is surrounded by nature and has an outdoor shower to boot. They said this is the ‘old man’s home’ because it’s just so near to everything, one can practically roll out to the dining area.

3. Halia and Kunyit

Our home for that night was at Halia, a quaint suite that can sleep up to 4 persons. There’s a four-poster double bed and another pair of twin beds, presumably for the children. What I love about this suite was how it’s surrounded by so many windows! They certainly helped to keep the room temperature low, and we did not even need to turn on the air-conditioner to sleep that night. Just next to Halia is another suite called Kunyit, which has a similar bed configuration. In all the suites, there’s a shower with an open ceiling. Certainly gives a new meaning to showering under the stars, don’t you think so?

4. Kantan 1 and 2

Last but not least, a huge bungalow that’s situated in the deepest part of the estate is where Kantan 1 and Kantan 2 are. These two suites can be combined into one big unit or they can be separated via a partition in the middle, creating two standalone suites that can sleep up to 4 persons each. This majestic suite has a patio where one can sit back and chill out next to the pond, a huge living area with an LCD TV, a bedroom with a gorgeous 4-poster bed, a washroom with 2 wash basins and a bathroom with jacuzzi! What more can one ask for?

The Food

During our 2day-1night stay, we were spoiled with delicious food by the resident chef imported from Kelantan Delights restaurant. Staying in a kampung environment, what better way to feast other than with kampung food? We stuffed ourselves silly with Ayam Masak Hitam (black sauce chicken), Pucuk Paku (wild ferns), Sup Tulang and Sambal Machang, among others. The most memorable dish has to be the Sambal Machang, made from freshly plucked machang fruit from the orchard no less. This fruit bears resemblance to mango and has a pungent, tarty flavour that is perfect to be made into sambal together with spicy chillies. This sambal was delicious even with just white rice.

During dinner, we had the Korean BBQ and Steamboat, in the company of Michael Buble’s concert playing in the big projector screen. Yes, the dining environment was rather sensational, not to mention the really cool temperature at night, circa 22 degrees C.

The next morning, we were treated with a breakfast feast consisting of nasi lemak, the local favourite, breads, pastries as well as cereals. Oh, don’t forget the egg station on standby too, ready to prepare whatever eggs you want them to.

While we were all lazing away, chatting and catching up, Saucer went to try his luck at fishing. The poor boy was standing under the sun for quite some time, complaining about the heavy fishing rod made from a long tree branch. But he persevered, oh yes he did. And it paid off!

Activities

Enough about the rooms and food in Aman Rimba, what about the facilities? Tucked in the middle of nowhere, what is there to do really? Well, if lazing around so close to nature is not enough, there are plenty of activities offered in Aman Rimba itself. For starters, take a dip in the swimming pool in the centre of all the suites, or take a nap in the cute hammock.

Back to nature.

Otherwise, spend a couple of hours in the game room, completely walled with glass so it feels like you’re playing in the middle of a jungle. There’s a pool table, a Foosball table, Nintendo Wii video game and board games at your disposal. Saucer and I spent quite a lot of time during the evening, playing with the Wii. We had a friendly match in bowling, tennis and even golf! It was quite fun. At night when everyone was already asleep, we also had a hand at the pool table.

The next morning after breakfast, we took a stroll down the estate and out to the surrounding area, to smell the flowers, literally. You’d be amazed at how gorgeous nature is, if you only take some time and pay attention to the wonders of it all. The colorful flowers, the buzzing bees, the rushing water – ah, it’s a completely different world from the city.

Located directly in front of the estate is a river with freezing cold water, flowing gently down a slope – perfect for a dip under the hot afternoon sun.

Needless to say, it was a much-needed weekend that rejuvenated and revitalized our body, mind and soul. To think that such a retreat exists merely an hour away from the city is almost too good to be true. Waking up to the sounds of birds chirping, sleeping with the doors unlocked, swimming in the river without a care in the world – it was all so very Kampung, so very comforting.

Where We Are

“A cool and fresh atmosphere”

We are located at the end of an extended village (composed of five kampung) of around 1,700 impermanent souls. This area is a “Malay Reserve” and they have named it Janda Baik (which means the Kind Widow). If you look at the maps, you will see that Janda Baik is positioned on the highlands of the largest state in Peninsular Malaysia - Pahang, where the famous 130 millions years virgin rainforest National Park - Taman Negara is to be found. Therefore, the surrounding jungle is still relatively undisturbed; indeed one can find numerous rivers and waterfalls as well as luxuriant florafleur and some hidden wildlife wild (that can be spotted by the patient and observant adventurer).

Accommodation

There are 7 wooden chalets, each exclusively designed.

The Bamboo Chalet
The bamboo chalet is the first one and located at the entrance; it is built at the edge of a bamboo bush on large 6 feet-high wooden pillars so that it overhangs the river and the lawn. It is provided with a double bed with mosquito net and a side-table, thus it can accommodate a couple but it is spacious enough to add 1 or 2 single mattresses on the floor for children. It has a small terrace facing the bamboo in total privacy. An open lounge is under the bedroom. The bathroom is outside tough. One of the most wanted!

Double Single Bed Chalets
There are 3 of these, which have the same size but each designed exclusively. They are all equipped with 2 single beds and mosquito nets a side table. Two of them are very close to the 'gazebo' (open kitchen), showers outside and the third one is very close to the river access and with an exceptional open air bamboo-made shower room behind it.

The Single Chalet

The single chalet is an A-shaped chalet. It is provided with 1 single bed but one mattress can be added on the floor. It is adjacent with one of the double single bed chalets, most of the time families like to take both at the same time and let the children in the A-shaped chalet because since it does not have any window, it looks like a cave-hut which would delight any youngsters.

The Family Chalet
The family chalet is the most complete chalet since it provides a private toilet attached to the bedroom itself at the first floor and a private shower at the lounge-kitchenette ground floor. It can host a complete family in the same room.

The Club House
The Club House is the big and tall house that you will find after the small stream's bridge. It features two floors as well. Downstairs is like a hall, an ideal place to gather a group to do some talks. Upstairs is an open area without wall that can be used as a dorm to accommodate at least 30 persons on mats; or that can be used as a surau (praying quarter).

Campings
The camp site is virtually 'any' spot on the lawn, except under the coconut, or durian trees (safety wise) as the fruits of these trees drop when they ripen and we certainly do not want our guests leaving our place with swollen heads.

Food and Catering

There are a few restaurants in Janda Baik including the delicious Pulau Santap restaurant famous for its typical kampung food buffet (lunch only), the Shaz's corner famous for its “Roti Canai”(evening) and the nice Bamboo-setting Andak Place for its “Mee Kari”(lunch and dinner). There are groceries (kedai runcit) to buy knick-knacks.

A fully equipped kitchen is available at the Guesthouse. Breakfast, lunch or dinner can be prepared for you on request. We arrange complete catering for groups as well. We organize unforgettable Barbecue party.

IF you haven’t been to Kampung Janda Baik in Pahang, the quiet little village will hold many surprises for you.

The number of signposts leading to resorts and chalets along the winding road shows the village is no longer a secret hideaway for urbanizes.

From names as simple as Maninjau Chalet to those as grand as Cherengin Hills Convention & Spa Resort and Suria Hill Country House, Kampung Janda Baik has it all.

Jackie's Organic Farm Offices a healthy choice of a getaway.

Choices vary from basic A-hut and kampung-style chalets to six-room hilltop bungalows and five-star hotel rooms.

There are at least 20 small resorts and chalets. In addition, there are private bungalows owned by the Who’s Who in the country’s list of the rich and famous.

Complete with huge landscaped lawns, some bungalows accept paying guests but with prior arrangements.

Perfect choice
This booming picture makes one wonder what makes Kampung Janda Baik a preferred tourism location.

Try horseback riding at Highlanders Equestrian Park.

Perhaps it’s because the village is only about 60km from Kuala Lumpur and a 40-minute drive away. The pleasant drive along the Karak Highway continues to the trunk road from Genting Sempah to the village.

In less than 10 minutes, you’ll pass through the village where the picturesque scene is made more perfect by a few rocky streams flowing from the nearby Titiwangsa Range.

With the majestic range nearby, the village enjoys cool weather — between 22°C and 28°C — especially from sundown till late morning. This gives the place the extra edge.

Walk in the park
Surrounded by lush nature, the village is not short of outdoor activities. There are many things to do and see.

Choices range from a leisurely walk in a heliconia garden and horse rides to a demanding two-hour trek to the source of a waterfall.

For families with children, the rocky streams make a perfect choice. The water is cold and clean and their depth and width are quite safe, even for little kids.

If parents want something more exciting for the children, there is a stable offering leisure rides as well as horse-riding classes.

The cool weather turns Kampung Janda Baik into a botanic garden of sorts. There are a few farms or gardens that offer basic accommodation and one that offers by-invitation-only homestay.

Singaporean guests have been flocking to Jackie’s Organic Farm which offers basic chalets and organic meals made with produce harvested from the farm.
On the other hand, Alex’s is a commercial garden that offers a myriad species of exotic heliconia. In addition to selling potted heliconia and other ornamental plants, Alex’s also offers landscaping services.

For a more elaborate garden, drive to Taman Hana — a huge garden that belongs to famous political writer Syed Hussein Al-Attas, fondly known as Pak Habib.

His 2.4-hectare land has more than 1,000 species of plants, beautifully planted around a handful of uniquely designed houses. However, these are only for invited guests.

Kampung adventure
If parks and streams are too tame to get the adrenaline pumping, the rugged Titiwangsa Range should have something to thrill.

With the rainforest, camping and jungle trekking are obvious treats. Try the eight-tier Tamping Waterfalls. Those who want it light and easy will be just as happy with the big pond at its sixth tier but if they are adventurous, they will get to the source of the beautiful waterfalls.

Some adventure seekers trek up the waterfalls to abseil and do the flying fox. Another interesting waterfall is Kuala Gula Waterfall where the falling water disappears into an underground cave.

For a more arduous trek, take the trail to Lolo Waterfall located en route to the peak of Gunung Nuang in Hulu Langat, Selangor.

Then, if you still have the stamina and time, continue the trek to the peak. The Janda Baik-Nuang trek takes 11 hours.

How to get there
The best way is via the Karak Highway. Follow the road signs after the Genting Sempah R&R area. The road is narrow but well-defined and one cannot get lost in Janda Baik as the road comes around in a full circle.
