This year's event is rounding up to be even more magnificent than in years past! Alongside our lovely models, we will be featuring three resplendent & unique burlesque performances from three different performers ~ what a treat! The event itself has changed locations, enabling a true evening of decadence: fine dining will be available before and after the show, and a selection of specialty cocktails will be joining the fine wine's and champagnes of years past...

We are also continuing the festive tradition of offering a promotion on gift certificate purchases on that night alone: the perfect chance to scoop up a little fa-la-la at an even better price. Behind The Scenes...

Behind the Scenes: Emily of Jane's Vanity shooting Dana Pisarra's rib silk camisole set...

And here, dear readers, is a glimpse behind the scenes of our most recent photoshoot - a peek into the process behind janesvanity.com, and a reminder of the personal touch behind everything we do...

One of the more hilarious parts of launching the online boutique at janesvanity.com has been the assumptions from friends & clients that it is somehow a very different business, that we have a warehouse full of lingerie and separate people who receive orders and ship them out. Perhaps that's the case with other online stores, but with Jane's Vanity it is really an extension of the shop: everything in online store is housed in the shop. Every photo, thus far, is shot in the shop. These are the same pieces we've hand-selected on trips to market for quality and uniqueness, nothing comes into the store (online or physical) sight-unseen. Any questions are answered by myself or Jane, all orders are received accepted and shipped by us as well. The two people working in the physical store are the same ones answering your questions and tying bows on your purchases. And that's just the way we like it.

I believe this began as an urgent consultation about eyelashes...

...or perhaps hair...

...but she looked just perfect, so we started shooting right away!

We are blessed with models who are not only gorgeous, but also fans of the lingerie itself and great fun! Watching Annie (the gorgeous model from our most recent shoot) imbue each piece with the life and energy she took from the piece was totally magical. The transformation between different styles, from bombshell to coquette to girl-next-door, is astonishing when you consider that she'd never seen the pieces before arriving for the shoot.

Gilda & Pearl is one of those collections I'd seen photos of online for many years before finally spotting the pieces in person at the lingerie market in Paris last year. Even more sumptuous in person, these pieces are utter decadence: fine french lace, sheer silk chiffon, seductive and flattering cuts that offer a veil of mystery without obscuring... well, anything.

Inspiration and a mini-Holiday...

Jane's Vanity will be closed this coming Monday & Tuesday, September 12th-13th 2011, for a mini-holiday at the beach...

A retreat that will revive and rejuvinate us, and prepare us for the avelanche of Fall/Winter shipments winging their way to us!

While the physical shop may be closed, our online boutique is open at any given moment for a little (or a lot!) of luxury lingerie... Shipments ordered Monday or Tuesday will go out promptly Wednesday, heading off around the city - country - or globe, a luscious package for the very lucky which typically arrives anywhere in the US within 3 days.

On August 27th we held a trunkshow for couture lingerie line Toad Lillie at Jane's Vanity. Having carried the line before, I knew her pieces would be beautiful: magnificently crafted, saucy, treasures to behold.

With her Sophomore collection, designer Laurie Shapiro has maintained the same flirty insouciance as her initial designs, but added an extra level of sophistication. Like the refined older sister of her first collection, this is lingerie for a woman well-versed in seduction who knows exactly what she wants: opulence, attention to detail, and a seductive yet flattering cut.

Her latest collection is quite appropriately named... Femmes Fatales.

Toad Lillie 'Vixen' Full-Cup Bra & High-Waist Garter Panty

Now in an extended size range from 32B to 38DD, this line feels like absolute decadence. Silk lined cups and gussets, rolled & French hems, not a serged seam on them: these pieces are entirely made by hand by the designer, Laurie Shapiro. The attention to detail that is provided is absolutely astounding: from idea to inception, every step is cultivated under her watchful eye.

On Practical Application: WEAR YOUR CORSETS!

Corsets are one of my absolute-favorite things to own and to sell. The feeling of being held in, the hourglass figure, the joy of showing someone how to instantaneously transform their body - what's not to love? However, 9 times out of 10 I sell a corset realizing that the person probably doesn't realize how easy it is to integrate them into day-to-day life, or really to wear them at all.

Don't get me wrong - as tools of seduction alone, corsets are worth their weight in gold. Who can resist a tightly-laced hourglass figure? If you have a corset and wear it for a sultry night in with your partner, you're certainly getting the job done. But have you ever contemplated wearing it out?

There are two different possibilities in terms of daily wear for a corset - as a foundation item or as outerwear. Both are delightful ways to have an hourglass figure for the night, both are possible with any corset - but sometimes easier than others.

Generally speaking, overbust corsets are easier to wear as an outerwear piece than as foundation wear. Firstly, if it's covering all the parts anyway, why not show it off? Second, the bustline on a corset is often stiff enough that it can be tricky to layer under anything but the thickest of materials. A cut like the Velda Lauder 'Dita' Corset is high enough in the bust that it can be worn as outerwear without excessive fear of wardrobe malfunction, but also looks darling layered over a blouse or partially-covered by a cardigan or bolero. In fact, this style is so easy to wear as outerwear that Velda Lauder has designed an outerwear-skirt to match (not stocked at Jane's Vanity, but available for custom order).

Cadolle's Zip-Back Waist Cincher as Outerwear

The waist cincher (or underbust corset) is a piece that's super easy to wear either as a foundation piece or as outerwear. The above style, Cadolle's Zip-Back Black Waist Cincher seems ideal to wear as an outerwear piece since the back-zip makes it appear less like a piece of lingerie & more like part of the outfit - without sacrificing the reduced waistline. Paired over a dress (as seen above), skirt, or even with a pair of trousers, this fabulous piece should be a regularly-worn part of your wardrobe!!

Underbust corsets with traditional lace-backs can be worn in the same fashion, just as easily (as seen above with a Vollers underbust piece.) Give yourself a little extra time to get laced in (or have a corset-buddy on hand) and your look will have all the va-va-voom you could ever need!

Corsets as foundation wear is a bit trickier. We often have brides call who want to wear a corset under their wedding dress, and the qualifying factor really is the thickness of the dress material. As traditional corsetry has lacing/boning to contend with, thinner fabrics can often show suspicious (and not terribly attractive) lumps from the edges and lacing of the corset. However, thicker fabrics do a lovely job of laying flat over the corset, and some pieces feel like they were MADE for a corset, especially vintage dresses! As a huge fan of vintage dresses, I've learned over the years that if the only place a dress doesn't fit quite right is the waist, you can often still wear it with the help of a corset. The vintage brocade dress I wore for 2011's Holiday Fashion Show (photographed above) pretty much won't zip without the aid of a corset, but with a little nip in at the waistline - glorious! Inspired by vintage couture gowns of the 30's-50's, Toad Lillie is a fabulous combination of glamour and saucy insouciance. Ruffles, bows, drawstrings and peepholes adorn her bras and knickers, most often produced in jewel-toned silk charmeuse. From ruffled creations seemingly made to peek from a low-cut sweater to shelf-bras that will bring out the burlesque star within, Toad Lillie's line is endlessly feminine and flirtatious. On Summer Hosiery...

Now that the sun has finally come out in Portland & we've joined the rest of the country in the sunny days of splendor, a post on perfect Summer hosiery seemed appropriate. As the temperatures rise, so do the hemlines, and we've all had those days where it is simply too hot to contemplate another layer - even if it's a sheer stocking. Yet there is no need to forsake a well-dressed leg for comfort in warmer temperatures!

Jane's Vanity has a plethora of lovely, unique hosiery options to get you through the warmer months, both in-shop and online. From classic silk stockings from Cervin and Fifi Chachnil to unique patterns from Fogal and Falke, there are offerings for every style & outfit.

Falke Net Stay-Up

My favorite hosiery option for truly sweltering days is the nude fishnet. It dresses your legs without adding any additional layers and looks perfect with any possible variety of colors and patterns. The fishnet pattern adds visual interest without detracting from the outfit itself, and the nude color adds an element of the unexpectedly sweet to an intrinsically sexy style of hosiery most often seen in black.

Fishnets can be incredibly chic in any color, especially when it is coordinated with your outfit. With Nude, Cigar Brown, Platinum Grey & the versatile putty-taupe Frappe color in stock, there's an option for any look. Fishnets in the daytime at many jobs can be a tricky proposition, but the softer tones of nude and grey can be easier to carry in a professional setting.

Falke Big Net Tight

From stay-ups to tights to knee-highs, wide nets with a 60's feel to closer nets which evoke the roaring 20's - there's a fishnet out there for everyone! On days where the temperature is over 80, you'll appreciate this hosiery option even more.

Another fabulous hosiery option - summer or no - is the classic stocking with a garterbelt or garters. Nothing will make you feel more feminine than the pull of the stockings against the garterbelt when you take a step, and the very process of rolling the stocking up your leg and attaching it to the garter straps feels luxurious. A silk stocking, like the one we have in-shop from Cervin, has the added luxury of being a silk - like the softest gossamer, this is a stocking you will never want to take off, and its status as a natural fiber has the added benefit of 'breathing' - a real plus in warm weather! Other lovely possibilities include the classic nude-with-black backseam from Fifi Chachnil, or the buttery-soft Diamond 10 Stocking from Falke.

Another really lovely hosiery option is a pattern. The French have this knack for mixing patterns which many Americans seem too timid to try - walking down the streets of Paris in January, I'm always struck by all the patterned hosiery walking by. As a nod to this (and as big fans of the look), Jane's Vanity always stocks a handful of lovely patterned options. Try pairing a striped stocking with a lace skirt, a lace stocking with your floral dress - you might be surprised by how great it looks!

Hosiery is a valuable accessory for any look, and one that is often neglected - black or nude, sheer or opaque, these are all important options, but what about a little color? A surprising pattern? The seduction & comfort of a stocking or a stay-up? Much of the hosiery at Jane's Vanity is released seasonally, so each individual style becomes a treasure.

Jane & I discovered Stephanie Loungewear at the Paris lingerie market Salon International de la Lingerie in January 2010, and had our first shipment arrive in the Fall of 2010. A new designer to the lingerie world with an astonishingly unique vision, Stephanie Loungewear is the creation of designer Stephanie Aman out of the UK. This is lingerie as art, the ethereal gossamer pieces that should float on the bodies of fairy princesses frolicking in the forest (or the bedroom)... Truly decadent, unique designs that are a treasure to behold - and to own!

Encyclopedia of the Exquisite

If you haven't read the book - Encyclopedia of the Exquisite - you absolutely should. But even without having read it, you will surely fall in love with the blog. An assembly of the fascinating, Encyclopedia of the Exquisite ranges in topics from Hot Crossed Buns to dancers in the original Ziegfeld Follies, and touch on websites, museum exhibits, books and planting techniques along the way. Her writing in book & blog is charming and informative, and the topics delightfully eclectic. A recent blog post shared that there's a second book in the works, good news indeed!

Cooking In Stilettos

Cooking in Stilettos is our favorite amongst the food-and-fashion group, and for a variety of reasons: her recipes are delicious and easy to follow, her fashion advice is chic but attainable for a range of income brackets, and - quite importantly- she understands the importance of beautiful lingerie! Her motto "Look good, eat well, and feel great!" simply rings true for us. Being well dressed and well fed is the only to face life, in our book, and Wendy adeptly shows (post after post) that there's no reason we can't all do just that.

Miss Narcissus

Miss Narcissus is a blog with a lingerie focus, whose posts range from photos of the newest in luxury lingerie collections to sumptuously feminine lingerie inspired photos from photographers like Ellen Von Unwerth (a shop favorite, and the photographer who shot the photo above). She somehow finds luscious photograpy I've never seen before & breaks photos of new collections before even I have seen them - this is a great blog to stop by for a little girlie inspiration.

Mademoiselle B

If you're looking for a little naughty luxury in your lingerie blog, this is the place to stop. Her "Photo du Jour" is always titillating, and her ability to scour the web for everything from art to magazine spreads that perfectly match her aesthetic is spot on. We are so delighted that Mademoiselle B is around to let us in on "all her dirty little discoveries"!

Margarita Bloom

First off, I will admit that I'm completely enamoured of the "Antoinettes Rose Garden Himalayan Pink Bath Salts" - I can't get enough. First I ordered one, then two... my last order was for a decadent 4 jars! (Excuse: 2 are going out as gifts. I'm really not that self indugent.) Aside from the fact that her products are the perfect primping treat, she also maintains a fabulous blog. From photos of her favorite screen siren Marilyn Monroe to her current choice in dance-party music, this blog is a treat to visit. Plus, it's a great way to stay in the loop on her current store specials!

The Simply Luxurious Life

The Simply Luxurious Life is a blog about... well, just that. A lovely combination of opulence and practicality, this blog is about living the indulgent, luxurious life you want - but doing it the smart way. From fashion to skincare to self esteem, this blog is about spending your money and energy on the important, high-quality things & how to save for them. I love that this blog really targets a wide range of people, and makes it clear that there are little luxuries that are attainable for everyone.

My Marrakesh

This blog ignites my wander-lust every time I stop by. Written by Maryam, the American proprietress of the Moroccan hotel Peacock Pavillions, her stories are of exotic dinner parties, shopping in Marrakesh, raising a family on foriegn silk, and the decoration and upkeep of her lovely hotel. I dream more than anything of having the time off and sufficient funds to lounge in her dining tent, shop the stalls, and take in the exotic atmosphere of Peacock Pavillions.

Simply Seductive
This blog is absolute eye-candy. Filled with feminine, decadent photos of fashion, home decor, lingerie & flowers, this is the blog I stop by when I need a visual feast or a lovely little pick-me-up. Her eye is spot-on girlie: lace, feathers, peonies & silk - the perfect treat for the modern lady.

A Story of Lighting, New Treasures, and the Joy of accepting Help.

The Jane's Vanity e-boutique has definitely been a labor of love. We have been working towards it's launch for months now, and each step has felt like it's been miles long.

When we did the first photo shoot, I knew the process of perfecting the photos would be tricky. My experience with photo editing was limited, and never included armpits (now the bane of my existence). However, I was determined that I could do it on my own without help from anyone else. Very determined. The first photos I shot and edited were a true struggle, both due to my inexperience and - as I have now learned - the lighting.

I am fortunate enough to be married to a man who has a lot of experience with all the technical aspects of production. Having worked on commercial shoots, as well as shooting and editing photos and video for his own theatrical productions, his response when I told him that I was doing another photo shoot was "Why don't you let me help with the lighting?" After a moment's hesitation (my determination can border on insanity), I agreed. Little did I know that he was going to save me hours of photo editing, and help make the photos from this shoot look spectacular - and professional.

(The fact that our model was extra foxy certainly didn't hurt!)

Lesson learned, in spades. Sometimes I can't do everything myself, and accepting help from those around me not only saves me work and heartache, but also makes the finished product more polished.

The stunning Avedon collection has been sold through and reordered three times now, mostly in the striking Cocoa & Turquoise combination. Bourdain feels like summertime with it's macrame-inspired lace and sheer plunge cups, and Brassai has added a pop of Mandarin color to the simple shaped-cup "t-shirt bra" (Oh, that all t-shirt bras were this beautiful! We believe they should be.)

The time has finally come! After far too many months of hard work & far too many cryptic (or blunt) clues-dropped, Jane's Vanity is absolutely thrilled to announce the launch of our new online boutique.

The online boutique will be a fantastic way for us to offer our wares to connoisseurs outside the Portland area. Many of the lines carried in the shop are difficult to find elsewhere in the US, and we are so excited to build a new clientele of lingerie-lovers based around these treasures. The online boutique will be virtually identical to a trip to our darling physical location: each piece is hand-selected for beauty, quality and that intangible sexy je ne sais quoi on bi-annual trips to Paris, and the collections are seasonal so availability is limited. It is a small group, but one of unquestionable beauty that we are proud to represent.

The e-boutique will carry most of the lingerie lines currently available in the boutique, including Lise Charmel, Nina Ricci, Andres Sarda, Stephanie Loungewear, Fleur of England, Fifi Chachnil, Ritratti, Aloe, Myriam Girard, Grazia'lliani, Falke, Christine Vancouver, Strumpet & Pink and Derek Rose.
