The story opens in Leningrad when the city has been blockaded by the Germans and everything and most of the people left in the city are dead or dying. The opening reminded me too much of what is happening in Ukraine, although the author had no way of knowing that this would be the world when her book was ready to be published. I had to put it down to sort out my feelings and be sure that I could read this book objectively. I decided that I could, so I restarted reading the book and ,as I have said, I am so glad that I did.

What I realized is that this is a testament to the human need to connect with people and to share live and feelings no matter the situation. The two main women in this story have had their lives torn apart by war and death. One Katya has no desire to live the other, Lidya is Katya's polar opposite. The war, and the blockade have intertwined their lives in ways that will change them forever. One feels she is betraying someone and the other has been betrayed. The descriptions of their lives and loss are at once beautiful and wretched.

The story shifts to a school for children where we meet the next main character Dimma, a blind child. His story comes from early, before the blockade and is a remarkable testament to the human spirit. I think that he is my favorite character, but everyone will have their own favorite in this saga.

The third shift in character takes you to the Russian front where you meet Trofim and Sasha. These two make the life of the soldiers fighting for Russia very real and very tragic. They are both hiding secrets. The author does a really good job of creating the sense of real people caught in a story that they did not choose. The book's narrative is told from the points of view of all three of these stories. They all come together and complete each other.

The author answers the question what comes after silence by telling you that is is music. The music is not always what we think of as music. There is music in the living of your life. There is music is shouting at god. There is music all around us. The author ties all of this together against a backdrop of, what we think of, as real music, a symphony. One of music and one of life.

This is a beautifully written story and is well worth reading, thinking about, and discussing with a friend or a book club. It is a story of the human spirit and how it overcomes tragedy and becomes fuller because of it. I hope that everyone who reads this book enjoys it as much as I did.

One for the Blackbird One for the Crow by Olivia Hawker

This is a story of just how strong the human will to survive is. Ms. Hawker dies not romanticize the American West in this story. The book opens with a murder of a neighbor and goes on to tell the story of how that one act affects two families who are bound together by it. Winter on the plains is harsh and both families must find a way to survive the coming season while working through their own griefs and prejudices. Neither family is guiltless in this telling. The Bemis's because they start the tragedy nor the Webbers because the matriarch cannot release the secrets that she carries deep inside her. The author is able to tell all of the stories that are both hidden and open in each of the characters in her story. I especially liked how she was able to do this. When I finished this book I wasn't sure how to categorize it. Was it a tale of human resilience over the elements? Was it a tale of buried secrets ? Some so deep that they threatened to destroy the life of the person that held on to them so tightly ? Or was it a love story ? I came to realize that this is a love on every level.. A story of t he love between the husband and wife of both families, and the children of each family. The author tells their stories without prejudice and the reader is lead to discover how it started and how it all turned out. I really liked this book and will look for more from this author
Mr Coates brought it to life in a way that other authors have not. The prose is lyrical and pulls you in . It makes the Underground Railroad real in a way that we should all care about.
I felt the author created characters and situation that felt real and, more importantly deliverable. This book made me think about what the railroad was and the role that Harriet Tubman, and others, played in the creation and execution of it. This is a topic that I wished the schools has taught more about when I was in school. Mr. Coates taught me something and changed the way I though about that period in our history. In the end this is a what a good book should do. I encourage everyone to read it. This is a delightful read ! The premise is ordinary but he way the story is told is not. A young lawyer who realizes thatg she will never make partner, an Aunt that leaves her the gift of a lifetime, and people who will accept her and love her. Along the way and old family mystery will be solved. The author tells this story beautifully !

The book took me back to a time when people and what they did mattered. It's not always about the money, but it's always about the manner. The author reminded me about this in the way that she told the story. In this book right wins out over wrong and love does indeed blossom in places and ways that are totally unexpired. A friend once told me that books come into you life when you need them. They don't always need to be weighty tomes, very often they are stories like this one that are well told that are just what is needed

I hope t hat we allays have stories like this, authors that are not afraid to write them and the bookshops to sell then in ! This book is perfect for book clubs !

This an author that I will look for more books by !

I really enjoyed how she developed the story, I felt that I got to know the main character, until I didn't know her at all. No spoilers here but this is a story of just how deep adornment cuts and to what ends we will go to try and heal that particular hurt. There were many characters in the book that I liked but didn't like the ending that three of them came too, but the story has to wrap up in a believable way and this one certainly does. I always try to figure out how the story will end and eve when one of the mysteries was reveled, I still couldn't figure it out. This is really worth the time to read ! Oh, that is could be so. This is a wonderful reimaging of what happened to Anastasia Romanov! Everyone knows that the story ends in tragedy but not here. There have been many people who have claimed to be the last living relative of the Romanovs. All of the clams have been disproven but Ms. Brandes has written a story that made Anastasia come alive into a person who is comfortable in today's world.

The second half of the book was, for me, more interesting. The first half deals with the known story and that is interesting. It sets the stage for how the author imagined that the Romanovs were, and it does paint a picture of a free soul that is Anastasia. The author brings the story alive after the family is executed. Magis, spellbinding and love all come into their own with this author. Anastasia is portrayed as a young girl who is kind, loving and fierce! In this retelling of the tragedy, love is triumphant and all ends well. As I said, if only it could be so! I enjoyed reading this book!

This is a clever title for a short book that really drives the point of lies home. This is the story of a ghostwriter who has been commissioned to write the biography of a movie star. As with the movies, nothing in this book is real and after awhile neither the main character or the reader. is sure where the truth starts and ends. The book is extremely topical it short and to the point but does make you stop and think about the world that we live in. For all of its modern conveniences, there is a price to be paid, and not in dollars and cents. I enjoyed it. Will want to read more by this author.

It really has it all, a cast of characters that are relatable and a plot that has all of them shining. Gillespie Texas is a town that is being gentrified and Carel Geische aims to make his dream come true because of it ! Fate however has other plans for him. The county fair is setting up and with it an entire town is either helping him get the reward he thinks be deserves, or is conspiring to keep it from him. At times he's not sure which fate is waiting for him ! And this is what makes the novel fun to read. Along with the characters already in town, someone from his past comes back just in time to stir things up ! Of course, no story set in Texas would be complete with big hearted women, and Marc Hess has written them beautifully ! The story is well told and is fun to read ! You will not be disappointed
The Gray Heron by John Wilde is a book in need of a story ! Don’t get me wrong, I really wanted to like this book, but there are too many undeveloped stories here. To show you what I mean. The book opens up introducing the reader to a semi-retired CIA Operative and quickly jumps into a special op mission in Nicaragua which has the potential to be a really good read. The book then quickly devolves into the story of his family and this is where ninety percent of the book stays. In the very end the reader is returned too Nicaragua to tie up the lose ends of the special op mission that the book opened with. Both of these stories have the potential to be developed into really good full bodied stories. Unfortunately, that is not the case here. The book suffers from lack of a good editor and that is a shame because Mr. Wilde can tell a good story. I just wish he had picked one and fully developed it. I will look for more books by him because I do believe that he will improve with time.
Alice Hoffman has written a story that we all need to read. Many of the dark forces that lead to WW2 are once again creeping over the world. This is not just another story about WW2 and the horrors of the Holocaust. It is the story of hope and love that succeeds because Ms. Hoffman has written a story that will capture your heart. She makes you want to feel what she is writing about and to care about what happened. The story starts in Berlin when everything is becoming difficult for the Jews. People are disappearing and life is becoming unbearable. A mother, desperate to save her daughter Lea from the Nazi's, seeks help from a renowned rabbi. However, it is his daughter. Ettie offers her a solution and together with Ettie's sister, they create a mystical Jewish creature a special golem which they name Ava. Ava's job is to protect Lea "as a mother would ". Her act is truly a gift and hope for the future. The four girls leave Berlin and head to France, where they believe that they will be safe. The world that they are in is torn apart by forces of evil that have been unleashed by the Nazi's. As the horrors get worse Ava's job becomes more urgent. Love and hate, hope and despair exist in the same house and Ava must find a way to fulfill her charge. Ava is mystical and speaks the language of the birds and fish and all things in nature. Ava knows what will happen and she manages to keep Lea safe but she cannot stop the horrors going on around them. Throughout the book, people resist, pay the price, fall in love and die. Ms. Hoffman weaves the natural world into the story in a mystical way. Ava is more a part of that world than the human world and her story is beautiful! The story ends with hope and love. I wanted to keep on reading, I wanted to know more of how the future would be for the characters that she created. I also want to believe that the things that happened can never happen again anywhere in the world.

Coming Back !

Today is the day that I finally am able, and willing to sit down, and start this blog again ! It has been over three years since I have done this and I must say that I have missed doing it. While my life has been full, there has not been much time for fun. I made a decision in April to change that and I am glad that I did. In July, I decided to go on the path that I am on and let go of the other. It was a wise decision. By Janet Evanovich

What a breath of fresh air this book was ! No more heroines who couldn't find their way of a closet with the door opened ! I am so happy that she has aco-author who is not afraid to portray female protagonist who are not afraid of taking care of themselves ! Kate knows how to defend herself and is not afarid too ! Yeah ! Enough of my waxing poetic ! This is a good story. It is cross and double cross and is really well writen. I can see this as a TV series that I would gladly recorded and re-watch. Kate O'Hare and Nicolas Fox, the main characters in the story, make great team. In this story, they team up to bring down a vicious killer who has changed his body to avoid capture, or recognition. Nick knows human psychology and is not afraid to use it, to catch a killer. He uses a universal truth, you can change your exterior, but you will always be the same on the inside. He s so right, if you like wine, you will always like wine and so forth. A person can change their face, their hair color, the color of their eyes, but they will always like wine. This works well in the story. Of course it helps that are supported by a cast of characters straight out of central casting, not that that is and thing, it works really well.

The story is fast paced and well plotted and is a joy to read. This is anew series that has potential and I look forward to reading more of their escapades ! If you are tired of Stephanie Plum never growing up and loping in the same old, same old, read this one ! You will be pleasantly surprised, I know I was ! by John Writher

What would you do if the world was on the verge of becoming unsustainable ? What if you could die and go back and live your life again ? Only this time you would be more productive because you could avoid the mistakes that you made the first time around ? Would you do it ? What if you had the chance to be the first, not really knowing what would or could happen ? Would you ? These are the questions that the author asks in this book and it really makes you think about our world and your choices.

The story is set in the not to distant future when on country, Great Britain, is facing very difficult times. Science has lengthened our life spans but not our ability to remain productive members of society. This is really not so fictions, it is happening now. Young workers are working at lower paying jobs and paying into a system that supports an aging population. In this work of fiction, three people realize that they have the means to reverse this. They realize that people, as they age, might just want to go back and be young again. They could be more productive, they could ease the burden on the younger generation by doing so. The story never examines too closely the moral implications of such a decision, rather these decisions are left to a population, that they know will prize youth above all. The author handles this well. He does not become judgmental about such a choice. The main characters devise a way to see if people can be persuaded to go back and start all over again.
The main characters in the story are not particularly likeable, they all have their ulterior motives and agendas For the story to work, they need to be this way. Mr. Writher presents us with a world where decisions are made on a cost effective basis, not all that far from real life.
The ending is mixed, the plan does not go exactly as hoped for , but then again not that far off. The last page is a cliff hanger, I will not spoil it here.

This book should make you think about some important questions facing human kind. I do not recommend this way but it makes for fascinating reading. I can envision this book for book clubs because there is so much here to discuss. Well done !
by Alan Bradley

Flavia doe it again, and with her usual charm and style ! Bravo Flavia. The story opens up where we left her. Flavia is now on her way to a school for young women in Canada. She is totally alone in a brave new world which she is totally unprepared for ! The stage is for murder, mystery and mayhem when a body falls out of the chimney in her new room. What a way to start ! Flavia must negotiate the challenges of a new school, new mates, new everything while she outs her best detecting skills to use to solve the mystery of the corpse ! Along the way she meets new friends and discovers things about herself that she would never have discovered had she stated in England.

I have to say that I did miss the interaction between her and her sisters, whom are absent from this book. They always brought out her poisonous side. None of the new characters do the job as well.

We are lead to believe that the corpse that falls out of the chimney is old and that the mystery may never be solved. However, Flavia is at her best and this is not the case at all. During the course of solving this mystery, Flavia is introduced in to the world of spy craft, and that is all I will say about that ! I hope that these new skills that she is learning will be put to good in use in future adventures !.

The murder, it turns out, was committed and covered up for the most basic of human reasons, the human heart.

Mr. Bradly has done it again, a great story with a great heroine !

This is simply a mystery, well plotted and delivered. I finished this is one setting and for me that is unusual. I do however appreciate a fast read every now and again.

What did I like abut the book ? Well for openers I liked the fact t hat he used older characters to be his detectives and solve the mystery. The story is set in a retirement facility so there are plenty of older characters to choose from. And I'm glad that for the most part he did. He only brought in younger characters when it was absolutely necessary, and when he did, they were well written and likeable. Bravo. The story actually revolves around solving a mystery. There are no current event headlines to push their way in to the story as happens in so many stories. Of course we call those thrillers now a days ! This one stays true.

What I really disliked about the book was the constant insertion of Yiddish and the necessary translations. It took away from the flow of the story and stereotyped older Jewish people. Both of which I found unnecessary and offensive. He didn't need this to move his story along.

Notwithstanding, the book has its charms. It is well written, plot and characters and I think that you will enjoy it. It is book club material, but it will satisfy the need for a good who done it !
by Jim Stovall

This book is a fairly quick read because the story flows easily, This is a great thing for an authorto be able to do. The story is fairly simple. A young man is left a legacy by his great grandmother but cannot claim it until he learns some life lessons. To accomplish this. his great grandmother en lists the help of her attorney and a another friend whose son had to learn the same lessons. To say the lessons start of badly would be an understated. With the help of someone who has walked in his shoes, he learns the life lessons that he needs.

The author paints a one sided picture of wealth, portraying it as selfish and self serving. This is all to true in today's world. The book is well written and will hold your trimester. For those of you looking for a summer book club read, this book fills that bill. This is much to discuss and think about. Overall a really good read.
by Keith Ellison

I picked up this book to read on Memorial Day 20124 and I am so happy that I did. This is a book to remind all Americans that those who sacrificed for out freedom, did so for the freedom of all Americans, not just a particular class of Americans.

The Congressman opens the book with the story of his family, and it is a fascinating story. He was raised by a family who above all else valued family. This was expressed differently by his father and mother but their core values shaped the man that he would become. Hos father expected nothing less than achievement from his sons, and they all excelled. Their mother balanced their father in what was to become a healthy family lifestyle. His background is colorful, rich in history and nurturing.

His life started in Detroit Michigan and he describes in detail how that city also shaped him. He ultimately found his way to Minneapolis, Minnesota, which he claims gave him the impetus to grow and flourish. And grow and flourish he did. He speaks of Minnesota nice, and that is the feeling that you take away after reading about his life there. I especially found this true when he wrote about his campaigns. Mr. Ellison also devotes a good amount of time to how he became a Muslim and a lawyer. He credits his faith with the values that he embraces to this day.

The part of the book that I found fascinating was his description of Congress and t he humility that he felt walking in the same halls that Lincoln walked in.

He ends the book with his vision and hope for the future and I, for one, hope that he succeeds. This is a book for all Americans to read and think about. We are not hyphenated Americans, we are all Americans

ANONYMOUS SOURCES
by Mary Louise Kelly

This is a wonderfully conceived and written who done it ! Kelly has written a clever modern day thriller that involves post 9/11 Muslim terrorism, British Intelligence, bad guys at the CIA , and one very inquisitive reporter.

Our gal reporter, Alexandra James is assigned to do a routine story about an apparent suicide at Harvard. A one Thom Carlyle, whose father, as it turns out , is very well connected. As it also turns out, there is nothing apparent about this suicide because it is not a suicide. James convinces her editor to let her go to London to do a human interest angle on Carlyle because there really is nothing else to write about. All of her digging in Boston is going nowhere. The local cops don't share, and no matter how hard she tries, she is getting nowhere. This is where the fun begins. There are love interest, real and imagined. There are multiple intelligence agents, all of who are very believable. And the people in DC are VERY believable.

James thinks that she is just trying to get background info to file her story, and in the bargain, relive some college a days and get some cool new shoes while she is there. In the process, she stumbles upon a terrorist plot to blow up the White House. This plot involves bananas, trans Atlantic murder, and James not knowing whom to trust. In other words, it is a great ride.

The story really heats up in the second half of the book and just flies.he pieces all fall into place and the story is satisfying. This is the first work I have written b this author, but I will be looking for more by her, she knows how to write a thriller !

On My Mind

I have just finished two books that dealt with human trafficking, and this is kind of playing into my theory that books travel in circles. By Anthony Quinn

When you think of Ireland, what do you think off ? Green shamrocks ? St. Patrick and the snakes ? A charmed isle where life is peaceful ? If any of these are your idea of what Ireland is this book will give you a very different picture of that country. This story is set on the border of Northern Island and Ireland in wild part of the country that has been peaceful sine the troubles. The same miseries that plagued this country also plagued Ireland. Greed in land speculations, failed business and a host of ghost developments. Into this mix throw in human trafficking along with every other criminal enterprise you can think of. The landscape is wild and so is the Eastern European evil master of all of this lawlessness.

This book will also take away any notion the prostitution is voluntary and victimless. It is neither. The woman at the heart of the story is a Croatian girl who has been trafficked and has been abused in every way you can think of. Lena Novak. She hangs her hope for escape on a customer, who in a previous life was IRA. Jack Fowler is still a renegade at heart, only now he traffics in selling real estate dreams to those who want to believe that they can have it all. Everything comes crashing down, the economy, his life and the story takes off from here.

There are many twists and turns in this book and I gurantee you will have fun following them. The book is well written and you will enjoy trying to untangle all the “knots” in the story. Read it and enjoy it !
by Laura Mc Hugh

This is a story about human trafficking, there, major spoiler alert. Mc Hugh haas written this story as a mystery and it is a device that works well. You will not realize what the story is really about, and who the bad guy(s) are until the end and that is something I will not give away.

Human trafficking received national attention when the Super Bowl was in New Jersey and the state Legislature and women ‘s groups raised awareness of this problem. This book is topical but will find an audience for years to come.

The story is told by all of the maim characters and you will enjoy hearing from all of them. It is set in the Ozarks in a town that has not evolved in decades. In many ways the author has used stereotypes to develop her characters. I was not put off by this because it made the story. I had my favorites and ones that I was not so found of.

This is a book that will make a good book club selection. There's much to discus and reflect on. It will also make you think, is there trafficking going on under your nose? If there is what would you do about it. Read it for the story and pass it on to your friends for it’s message.

This is a short story that I requested, and received, from Eric Carpenter via Librarything.com. It's a short story about a very small slice of the War in Viet Nan. I really don't know how to categorize this story. Usually when I read story, the author has painted a picture and I can visualize and put my own spin on it. THis is not the case here. This was like sitting down with the author and having him tell me the story. It was truly different and I really liked it. I was able to put myself in the cockpit of the B-52 and really feel what he imagined they must have felt. It is one thing to use the first person voice when writing, it's effective and good, but having some tell you what they thought the characters were feeling and doing is really something else.

The story ended with a question for me, which I am sure the author intended. Was the war in Viet Nam, or the American War, worth fighting. I watch travel shows, and the Amazing Race TV show, that showcase Viet Nam, I wear clothing made in Viet Nam, the nail techs in my neighborhood are Vietnamese, For me the answer is no. There was death and destruction, both military and civilian. In the end, no one really remembers what the fighting was all about, but this can be said about any war that has ever been fought. In the end, people become allies, the fanatics try to rekindle the flames and trade goes on. Mr. Carpenters short story made me think, and thatg, I believe, is the point of storytelling. I enjoyed this work. I am going to check out his others stories and see what they make me think about and how they do it.

The Tenth Circle or a New One for Dante

The Tenth Circle by Jon Land

WARNING: SOME SPOILERS (not many)

Wow, what a read ! Jon Land takes you on a roller coaster that just will not stop, even if you wish he would ! This is a story that has some roots in reality, remember the preacher down South who was burning the Koran ? Well, Jon takes him into this story and creates a truly terrifying picture of what a madman who is convinced that God is on his side can do. He also takes stereotypes of
neo-cons, embittered ex military types, retired military types, spies, counterspies and creates fantastic story. In this story Blaine McCracken and his sidekick, the Indian need to stop a plot to overthrow the government by Americans. Another borrow from reality, terrorism is coming from within and being made to look like it is coming from abroad. Who's to say that this is not
happening ?

The story goes back and forth between characters, including spies, counterspies, and American history, I loved it

Land takes the reader inside the mind of a truly disturbed preacher, Jeremiah Rule and the reader hopes to God that this is pure fiction. This character is guilty of murders, rape and mutilation, you will be happy to see what happens to him ! Land draws a parallel between his military characters and those in real life who express the sentiment that they "want their country back" . I am never sure what the people in real life want back, but Land seems to have his characters want a country thatg predates 9/11. You'll have fun discovering of they get it.

There is one chapter that had me laughing out loud in another wise dark book and that was the way Land described just how effective retired military personnel can be when they are called upon.

This is a really good book that will start you thinking , could this really happen here ? A friend of mine thinks that this type of book gives the bad guys ideas, I disagree. This book is well plotted and will also give the good guys some ideas. Good job, Mr. Land

This book will grab you from the opening
and will not let go until the very end. Not to give the story away, but the
book opens with a murder and is chock full of them. This gives the reader many
opportunities to try to solve them, I promise that it won't be easy to do that!
Besides murder, there are deceptions and betrayals! There is also love and forgiveness.

The cover bills the book as a novel of
suspense but it is so much more than that. The author makes use of a flashback storytelling
to set the story and give the reader information that moves the story along. I
usually have a problem with this method but not in this cases. It is so well
done that you forget you are reading about things that happened in the past. I
really enjoyed it.

This is also the age old story of right
versus wrong. What happens to your life when you decide to do the right thing? What
will the cost be? Will it turn out well for you? Will there be those in your
life who will try to destroy you because they knew what the right thing to do
was and chose to do something else? When all is said and done, will everything turn
out okay? These are just some of the questions that the author answers in this
book. The story is straightforward. A man who is an environmentalist is
murdered because he has discovered something that will stop a major project
from going forward. There is much money to be made, and there are characters in
the book who will stop at nothing, including murder, to see that this project
goes ahead. For me the heart of the story was the conflict between the
protagonist, Sean Donovan and the antagonist Richard Wolf. There's could be the
story Joseph and his brothers, or the prodigal son, or any story when right and
wrong collide.

Overall the story is developed well and
beautifully told. There are a few places where the author seems to lose track
of the story, but they are few and he gets back on track quickly.

I have found a new author! Mr. Nyznyk has
written two other books and I know that I will be reading them. I am curious to
see what his earlier style was and how he grew, or was shaped, into how this
story was written
